If You’ll Have Me

“Incredibly charming . . . There’s joy, delight, and absolutely unrestrained romantic sweetness on every page. I love it to bits!” —TRUNG LE NGUYEN, author of the Eisner Award nominee The Magic Fish

Momo Gardner is the kind of friend who’s always ready to lend a helping hand. She’s introverted, sensitive, and maybe a little too trusting, but she likes to believe the best in people. PG, on the other hand, is a bit of a lone wolf, despite her reputation for being a flirt and a player. Underneath all that cool mystery, she’s actually quick to smile, and when she falls for someone, she falls hard. An unexpected meet-cute brings the two together, kicking off the beginning of an awkward yet endearing courtship—but with their drastically different personalities, Momo’s overprotective friend, and PG’s past coming back to haunt her, Momo and PG’s romance is put to the test.

The early stages of infatuation driving towards dating can be a time of hyper self-conscious anxiety. Especially someone like Momo, the already self-conscious focal character in Eunnie’s utterly adorable If You’ll Have Me as she falls for PG, a girl who seems to radiate cool and has a long string of admirers. But could PG have feelings for her back, or is Momo setting herself up for heartbreak? As gorgeously illustrated as it is sweet, this sapphic graphic novel is about as heartwarming as it gets in a story about navigating self-doubt and learning to believe that you deserve to be loved. While the miscommunication trope can often be overused in romance stories, Eunnie applies it in a way that becomes a heartfelt investigation into the anxieties and assumptions that that lead towards miscommunication, transforming it from a frustrating plot device into a rather insightful look at the ways we self sabotage or fall into confirmation biases. With an inclusive cast of dynamic characters and warm, lovely artwork If You’ll Have Me will certainly have your whole heart by the time it is over.

Momo and PG are just SO cute together

There is a fantastic comic shop in Ann Arbor, Mi I used to frequent in my college days—Vault Of Midnight—and on a trip back home last weekend I stumbled across this fantastic recommendation while browsing:
Untitled
Photo Text: >”One of the most ADORABLE LGBTQ love stories you will ever read <3 10/10 LOVE THIS BOOK!”
So shoutout to whomever wrote this recommendation, you are awesome and I appreciate you.
How could I not pick this up with such a glowing recommendation, and then share this recommendation with you all. Everything said is true, this is simply adorable. While this is shelved as a queer, YA romance, the characters are slightly older than most and attending their first year of college, which really helps bring out the anxious energy as these are young women having to navigate a much larger world than before and only having themselves and friends to rely on as they balance dating, school and trying not to forget about taking care of themselves in the maelstrom of activity. Momo has always been one to keep her head down, avoid parties, focus on school and be there for everyone else, though tends to get walked all over ensuring everyone else has a good time and gets homework done. But when she finally finds the courage to speak to PG on the pretext of seeing if she is okay, it opens a whole new world of having to be herself and be vulnerable that she wasn’t prepared for.

“We passed geometry.”

What really made this work is the depth to the rather dynamic characters here. PG, who’s escapades while she skips class might be a bit more R-rated, seems like she has it all together and a sort of stereotypical “bad boy heartbreaker” type but a mid-book reveal into her recent past caught me by surprise and added a fantastic layer of nuance to this story. Eunnie does well by giving a lot of space for the scenes and characters to breathe, expanding on family and friendship circles to give a much more textured perspective on who they are. Miscommunication does become a dominant crux to the various relationships here, but in a way that really highlights why miscommunication can occur and the self-sabotage of each character feels quite realistic where its hard to not be empathetic to them. Centering on Momo was an excellent choice as well, as many of her issues can be seen as tripping over her own lack of self-confidence although both primary characters bash against their own walls of confirmation biases. But I also enjoyed much of Momo’s internal dialogue, particularly how she frantically tries to assess every situation and read into how she thinks she should act. But it makes for some entertaining scenes that also make Momo so endearing:

Photo Text: [option box: compliment his face / hair / eyes] Momo: He has eyes. I mean--
Friend: “He does have nice eyes!”

Momo is so adorable and leans into being nerdy and I love that for her, but she also lacks self confidence and I think a big theme of this book is learning to believe you DO deserve things. Or, as PG says, to allow yourself to be selfish sometimes.

PG: You like being there for people. That’s not a bad thing
Momo: What if I’m doing it for selfish reasons, though? What if I’m doing it because…I want people to like me?
PG: You care about people because it makes you happy. I don’t see the problem, as long as you remember to care about yourself.

So take care of yourself, remember you deserve love and definitely check out Eunnie’s amazingly adorable If You’ll Have Me. It’s just so pure and sweet, has great nuance and depth and plays with themes of misconceptions and learning to love yourself and be loved. A total winner, thank you Vault of Midnight employee for recommending this!

Ummm....okay this is the CUTEST THING I've ever read!!! Kind of obsessed and you should absolutely preorder if you want an adorable sapphic romance. If You'll Have Me is a graphic novel following two girls falling for each other in the first year of college.

Momo is super nerdy and adorably awkward and has never had a girlfriend. PG is hot and cool and has a reputation for seducing lots of ladies. But if this opposites attract romance doesn't make you squee you're probably heartless. The art is fantastic and the story is really sweet and heartwarming. Go order a copy! I received a copy of this book for review via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.

”To the lesbians, the women who love women, the sapphics of colour. You are so loved.” 💖

If You’ll Have Me made my heart feel so full 🥺 !! The art style used here is so cute and well designed - this might be one of my favourites ever used in a graphic novel.
PG is more of a masc lesbian and experienced with women, whereas Momo is a femme who is new to relationships and very shy. Will love bloom unexpectedly between this pair, as they fast become friends?

”Love is at the door, if they’re brave enough to let it in…

If you want a stupidly cute romance with light angst, cute art, decent character arcs and tropes used well, then If You'll Have Me is fantastic.

I was honestly surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Momo and PG are college students who meet up and become friends, eventually falling for each other. But, they each have their own baggage to deal with that interferes with their perceptions of themselves and each other. Their friend dates are cute, their first kiss is cute, the resolution after the third act angsty separation is cute. And though this does utilize the third act sort of breakup trope, it was done in a way that made sense for what we've learned about Momo and PG, and it wasn't overdramatic.

The art is SO cute. The simplicity and bright color work might be a turn off for some, but I really loved it. The lightness of it felt perfect for the story being told.

Highly recommend this if you want a sweet romance read!

Content warnings: past toxic relationships.

Rep: Momo is cis, Black, and lesbian. PG is cis, Asian, and lesbian. Side sapphic characters. Side POC characters.

Holy heck I loved every single second of this. The story, the art, the characters. I had all the feelings while reading this one.

I adored Momo and just wanted to hug her. From one people pleaser to another, she deserves good things.

I adored the development of Momo and PG's relationship - they're so sweet together.

Everything about this was so tender and wonderful.

- I love how cute momo was and I found myself rooting for her throughout the entire story! The artwork was absolutely beautiful and it really made me so excited to get to the next page. I love how there were so many diverse characters too!!
- I found this book in the YA section, but it could have easily been in the adult section because it’s set in college which I loved! It gave so much nostalgia. I also loved the little dates they went on together. I wish that we had gotten to see a little more of PG voicing her feelings before the very end but overall it was a cute story.
- Would love to see more graphic novels like this one! The artwork was great, but I also loved the dialogue too!! It made the story feel like a traditional book because there was so much writing.

This graphic novel was so cute🤭. Protect Momo (the fmc) at all costs.
—————————
Synopsis
Momo - sweet, caring, introvert, & kind of a pushover.
PG - extrovert, reputation for a player, & she falls hard.
Together they meet and have great banter. But they have huge different personalities and PG’s past might make trouble for their new (romantic) relationship.

“I’m used to people liking me for… what I can do for them. Not for me.” Protect her heart😭🩷.

I’m trying to get more into graphic novels.

This is an extremely sweet and delightfully illustrated sapphic romance, which only partly hinges on a misunderstanding as the main conflict. Momo is a shy college freshman, a rule follower, a hard worker who didn't date or party at all in high school. She runs into PG, seemingly mid-hookup with a friend of a friend who claimed to be too sick to come to class. After that first encounter, Momo seems to see PG everywhere, and each time with a different girl. Clearly, PG is a player and also in a completely different league than Momo. Except, when a cautious new friendship begins to develop between them, PG seems unfailing chivalrous and polite. Which is the real PG? And how much trouble will Momo get into if she lets her feelings become something more? I really enjoyed the bright color palette and confident line art.

I've been obsessed with Eunnie's Pink in the Night comic for the longest time; I even own the prints and intend to frame them and hang them on my wall. So when I learned she'd be releasing a graphic novel, it immediately shot to the top of my anticipated releases.

And ohhhh my god, this is the CUTEST thing ever. Everything about this is adorable, and it's so funny too. I know I'll be rereading this a lot to help my anxiety, because it's just so wholesome and heartwarming.

I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who's wanted a sapphic Heartstopper!

I waited for this graphic novel on hold at my library for 54 weeks and it was well worth it. I enjoyed this a lot! The artwork is absolutely adorable and the story was incredibly cute.

I loved both of the protagonists, and the side characters too. The story had a nice amount of depth to it compared to most of the other graphic novels that I have read.

It was just really nice, and I recommend it to everyone.

3.7 ⭐️ This was a cute sapphic college romance that had me grinning away.

The marketing for this compared it to Heartstopper and it didn’t disappoint. I won’t say it’s an exact fit (this has a college setting and more college leaning themes) but it is one of the closest sapphic alternatives I have found so far and I’ve read a lot of sapphic comics.

If You’ll Have Me takes place in college and follows the awkward and endearing Momo who falls for a known ‘player’ PG (think a younger Shane from The L Word.) Its a cute and messy look at finding your feet in that first relationship.

This one does have a hefty dose of the miscommunication trope which I’m not as keen on, and PG’s personality is a tad standoffish at times, but I was happy with the progression of developing communication skills as the novel went on.

It looks at first relationships and explores themes such as insecurities and growth. There’s a dash of angst and a whole lot of learning as they go.

Rep// Black Sapphic MC who has heterochromia and is lactose intolerant, Vietnamese Lesbian MC. Sapphic SC’s.

Themes// College, Romance, First Love, Modern Day Setting.

Thank you to Penguin books for providing me with a copy for review.

TW’s listed below.

Tw// mentions of sex / conversations around sex (nothing on page, and no nudity), past anxiety from relationship.

I loved the artwork and the friendship dynamic. Protect Momo at all cost. PG had an interesting storyline, was she a player or maybe fell into showing up the way people expected her. Idk it wasn't fleshed out, but we got glimmers of something more than sleeping around. Also, the 3rd act breakup felt rushed. Either way, an introvert and a lone wolf was an interesting combo.

Is this supposed to be new adult? Aren't they in college?

An opposites attract romance between a couple of college students. One is shy, short and romantically inexperienced, the other is confident, tall and sex positive. Cuteness ensues.

I might have gone for a fourth star if only it weren't a trifle overlong and too meandering in places. But this might be a plus for those who want to luxuriate in the characters.

This book was absolutely ADORABLE!! It was a very cute, lighthearted and fluffy read. The art was AMAZING, I lovedddd the author’s style. I loved PG and Momo so much and just reading about their growth and love for each other. Their character designs were the cutest.

I think my favourite thing was how diverse this graphic novel was and what great lesbian/sapphic representation was showcased in this. Every page, even the background characters was just filled with diversity which every book/graphic novel should have and I just felt so seen and very happy. This was a joy to read.

This was such a cute heartwarming graphic novel and very quick read. The miscommunication trope is usually not my typical read but this book executed the different types of anxiety and assumptions that lead to miscommunication very well and in a very unique way.

I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes graphic novels or the miscommunication trope.

I am slain. The cuteness and sweetness between Momo and PG has absolutely slain me!!! If you’re looking for a wholesome romance, it doesn’t get much sweeter than this.

Also Eunnie has the loveliest style in the whole world. This book is a total feast for the eyes!

I thought PG was a boy just looking at the cover but finding out that PG was a girl was a pleasant surprise. I’ve been enjoying the rise of cozy and sweet sapphic romance graphic novels coming out lately.

I felt interested in seeing the way Momo and PG’s relationship developed. It was really adorable and gave me butterflies. And Eunnie dealt with the girls’s inner turmoil so well. I related to Momo’s fear that she’s boring and unloveable.

Ah! I’m so glad I picked this one up from my local library.
