Cassidy learns both the true nature of the world and his place within it. Gaining mastery of his past has unlocked his full potential, and the final fight against the Immortals is about to begin.
M.R. Forbes is the author of a growing number of science-fiction series including Rebellion, War Eternal, Chaos of the Covenant, Stars End, and the Forgotten novels. Having spent his childhood trying to read every sci-fi novel he could find (and write his own too), play every sci-fi video game he could get his hands on, and see every sci-fi movie that made it into the theater, he has a true love of the genre across every medium. He works hard to bring that same energy to his own stories, with a continuing goal to entertain, delight, fascinate, and surprise.
He maintains a true appreciation for his readers and is always happy to hear from them.

The third and final novel of the Cassidy trilogy is based around the attempt to make a revolution against enemies who not only can see the future but can control your very reality, at least for half of them. The Matrix comparisons are considerable but so were the Altered Carbon ones.
This is a lot more action than philosophy focused, however, as Cassidy goes full on "revolutionary savior" in the final installment. Which is a bit of a shame as he was a lovely kind of character when he was a complete scumbag working for the Man. However, that doesn't mean the book isn't exceptionally exciting and well-written.
Can the simulation be saved? Can reality? Do either deserve to be?
More of a 2.5 really, but rounding up. Would have rated it higher, but it was too dependent on fight scenes, as was the previous book. Action is welcome, but for me it overwhelmed everything else. Even small opportunities that could have given a respite to the relentless action would have helped but were missed. Even a character getting a chance to just take a shower and change clothes was interrupted, but something that simple would have been welcome versus relentless action, and given the character and the reader a few minutes to collect thoughts and wind down just a bit. Another possibility might have been shifting to something happening to another character elsewhere occasionally to break up the action a little.
The action also shouldn't make me laugh because at times it seems absurd, nor should ways of solving problems ruin the dramatic tension. But if you're in a mood to be all in on action, fights, and little else, this may be ideal.
I may try another series by this author, but my overall impression is that more effort is put into quantity, turning out a lot of books, rather than quality as far as honing the books into making the most of their premise and available pages.
You really need to start with book 1 that explains who Cass is. I think it's an amazing series! Shades are those who are trained to take over a body, do a job and then go back into cold freeze till needed again. This is an amazing story about what computer AI can help/stop the world in whole but you live in a dreams state. Even in a dream state it makes your thoughts and feelings be what helps create a world. You have your elites or called Immortal where you can do something like raise your own body replacement. This book helps bring the whole series together, with Jessica Tai and Cass do what is the right things. Fighting a computer setup to free the world from the dreamstate. I was really surprised how it ended, but so glad it did the way it did.
Interesting, unique plot lines, that Forbes manages to hold onto throughout the books. Read them in order, or you will get lost. There is a lot going, typical "Forbes" style action. So why four and not five stars Perhaps a bit long on reminding the reader what the Conflict is or what's at stake, even what a shade was. I felt they were too many, too often and I really wanted to get back to the story. Characters are what I call "Forbesy". You can easily relate to them, understand them, and love or hate them, (some times both)
Forbes does Winning against incredible odds, and this is once again, that adventure and well done
If you are a Fan of Forbes, you need to read this series. If your not a fan, you will be soon.
I have been reading through almost all of your series. Almost missed this one. Parts of what I read, reminded me a lot about the Hunger Games only these people were in a dream scape. You have such a Great imagination and I really enjoy these books. I guess now I am waiting on the next Sheriff Duke book.
If you enjoy scfi you'll enjoy this! M.R.Forbes is without doubt a very creative and imaginative writer. The story line is full of surprises and twists and turns to the point I struggled to keep up at times. But writer is not in any way patronising to the reader and there is depth to the writing, an excellent read.👍
I didn't expect so many twist and turns when I picked up this series. There was a lot of room for error, but the author managed to write a convincing story with lots of action, philosophical questions, entertaining characters and awesome plot.
Forbes is a great writer but this is more a like to Stephen King in my opinion maybe better. It reminded of The Dark Tower a bit. Cassidy was a great character that keeps you rooting for him. Great change from space opera
Great thinking book!! With the coming of age for us and the AI, is this Premonition for times to come? This story is a different version of what people think what might happen to us and definitely a different twist. Great read all around.
I'm the true Forbes style, great read that was hard to put down at times. Tried and true sci-fi troupes (AI, the nature of existent, oppressive regimeds etc) but from a rather unique angle. Good end to the trilogy, satisfying without being overindulgent.
