Her twin was a dead man. Tattoo artist Kelsie Cole cannot believe her brother would give his best friend use of his cabin the same week he promised it to her. She had been butting heads with straight-laced John McBride since they were kids. John McBride only takes one week of vacation a year, and there isn’t any way he’s driving down a mountain back to Raleigh just because Kelsie Cole is already standing on the porch staking her claim when he arrives. The cabin has two rooms, and they are adults. They can share a space for seven days. It’s not like they’re attracted to each other or anything, right? Kelsie grits her teeth, but assures herself she can handle it.
I am an air force brat and spent most of my growing up years living overseas in Italy and England, as well as Florida, Georgia, Ohio, and Virginia while we were stateside. I now live in Florida once again with my big, wonderfully pushy family and my three-legged cat, Harry. I have been reading romance novels since I was twelve years old, and twenty years later I still adore them. Currently, I have an unexplainable obsession with hockey goaltenders, and an unabashed affection for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
This was my 1st read by this author, but it won't be my last. John and Kelsie were very likable, with sizzling sexual chemistry and enough backstory to make them 3-dimensional, the setup was simple - hey, it's a short story - but effective, the conflict between John and Kelsie was believable and the love scenes were scorching hot! Can you tell how much I liked this story? ;)
I picked this up from Liquid Silver after getting sucked in by the excerpt despite it being twice as much as a novella should cost, and I'm glad I did.
Kelsie Cole is a pink-haired, well-inked tattoo parlor owner who hasn't worn a single-digit clothing size since she was a pre-teen. She's off for a week vacationing at her twin brother's lakeside cabin in North Carolina and she's not too keen to see the car pulling into the driveway. She decides her brother's a dead man for telling his best friend and business partner that he could have the cabin this week. She's known buttoned-up, suit and tie wearing John McBride since they were nine years old, and he's gotten under her skin since day one.
John doesn't know why everything he says or does causes Kelsie to snap at him. She interprets his glances and questions as judgments on her weight, tattoos and piercings. He's fascinated with her, in reality, and just wants her to see him as a man so he can treat her like a woman. He's determined to use the week to change things between them.
The Sweetest Tattoo isn't very long at just shy of 30k words, but it packs a lot into the space. John and Kelsie have known each other for 20+ years, which helps establish their connection. Dane uses dialogue and memories to share their bits of backstory to show how they became the people they are. It's an opposites attract story on its face, but then you also realize they have a lot of common experience, making them sort of two sides of the same coin. Both faced adversity when they were young, but they both chose different ways to deal with it.
It wasn't the best sex writing I've ever read, but it was certainly above average. While there was a lot of it, it was full of emotion and character development, so it never felt gratuitous. Major props for the hero volunteering to use a butt plug before he was to do the same to her so he'd be in the know. It was a surprisingly hot scene with a lot of feeling to it, but I was totally surprised to see that. Nice gamble, imo.
So I'd suggest this for anyone who likes a quick and naughty novella without any particularly kinky elements to it.
i really liked this book. this was the first cameron dane book that i've read and i immediately bought the sequel 'grey's awakening'.
loved kelsie the tattoo artist. it makes me happy when opposites attract in books like this. the pink haired, piercings, tattoo artist and the buttoned up business man.
and any man willing to take a butt plug because he says it's only fair to feel what kelsie will feel when he gets his turn, is way OK in my book!
I try not to give out 5 stars unless a book really is amazing. Well in my opinion this book really is amazing! I love, love, loved John and Kelsie.
At first I wasn't sure when I first started reading that this wouldn't just be some book filled with sex and nothing else. See the author doesn't spend a lot of time building up to the relationship. At first the writing felt a little lose, almost as if we were missing some of the story if that makes any sense. However, that is quickly replaced once these two decide to get together. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to read a book with some serious steam and a very touching love story to go with it!
A very sweet friends/enemies-to-lovers story with some very hot love scenes. Thanks to Audrey for the rec! It's hard for me to enjoy a (romance) novella because I invariably feel that there's not enough time for the relationship and characters to properly develop. Dane did a great job despite the short length though, and I think one of the things that helped was they are the only two in the story throughout. At one point they go to a diner and run into a friend of hers, but he's there for only about 2 pages.
Kelsie and John were really cute together and had wonderful chemistry. Kelsie was an unusual romance heroine and I loved her; she's a rebel type on the outside, but only in the sense of her appearance; from the beginning she's sweet and funny, with some nice spitfire to her when it comes to McBride. She reminded me of Caden Grayson in Laura Kaye's novella Hearts in Darkness, but the female version. And in some ways, John is like Makenna (that book's heroine) in that they're both the staid suit-types, contrasting with their tattooed counterparts.
{ Novella Recommendations } Based on plot or character similarities: * Hearts in Darkness by Laura Kaye (4.5 stars) * Intimate Friends by Claire Matthews (4.5 stars)
A fantastically sweet and hot erotic story of unrequited love. Though it was a short read, I didn't feel that the story suffered at all. This is my first read by author C. Dane...I will be looking for more of her work to read.
I liked this story, even though it was kinda short and I would have liked to learn more about the MCs. But it was well delivered and it didn't seek to reap any laurels of originality, even though Kelsie, with her pink hair and multiple tattoos and piercings, was no classic romantic heroine. So, I liked her. Or maybe it's my soft spot for tattoo artists.
And since this is erotic romance, I should add that the sex scenes were scorching hot and I particularly enjoyed the one involving a certain toy. Mmmhmm...
**REVISED: 2.5/3 Stars: I realize now I was being to harsh...
This little smutty gem was short, sweet and straight to the smutty point.
Which in all definitions of smut, it is exactly what it should be.
We first meet Kelsie; a wild card for all intents and purposes. She’s got tattoos, piercings and neon pink hair. She owns and runs her own tattoo shop and is every bit “sticking-it-to-the-man” as the next rebel girl.
Then there’s her and her twin brother’s child hood friend John. Shooting the straight and narrow, John is an all-suit wearing, hard-working businessman. And they both happen to be under the assumption that the family cabin is theirs for the week…they were wrong.
I’m a sucker for witty banter, especially banter that is borderline sucker-punch. Their chemistry is undeniable, but a childhood as frenemies can do that to you. The author wastes no time getting right to the…ahem…good stuff. While I could have used more tension between the characters, it was a satisfying, quick read regardless.
Another winning factor with me, Kelsie is a big girl! Well, not that a size 16 is huge, but I love that she’s not the twiggy counterpart we see in a lot of these romances. We like to think that big girls get just as much romance! :)
The ending was a little cheesy for me; I would have liked something a little more realistic. But in all things smut, the cheese-factor is sure to follow.
This is the first M/F romance/erotica that I have read in about 6 months & I now remember why I started reading M/M. Why is the angst & drama in M/F books so contrived? I hate sitting there & thinking to myself 'just sit the feck down & have a conversation'. The book isn't bad but I just found the whole thing so over-dramatic. Perhaps the fact that I have read 5 books in 2 days has made me a tad jaded, but I probably won't bother to re-read this one any time soon.
I LOVED this story even though it was short. It had blazing hot love scenes but it also had a tender sweet love story that made me bring out the tissues. I really liked both characters but especially the hero. What a man. This is a wonderful read.
The story itself was sweet: a buttoned up businessman and a plus size, tattooed woman have been fighting since they were kids and finally morph into lovers. Plus there's the unrequited love theme that's always a favorite. The special part of this story was the sex, which was both hot AND realistic. It had one of the most realistic anal play scenes I've ever read, not at all fake choreographed.
The problem with this book was that the dialogue was an odd mix of casual, realistic speech mixed with stilted language. At one point, the hero, during sex, says, "No recriminations." Yeah, I don't think so. Maybe we're supposed to believe a savvy venture capitalist would talk like this, but I can assure you that they don't, at least not in social situations, and definitely not in the middle of sex. And there are other examples where that came from. The other problem with the story is how short it is, but while I was sad to say goodbye to the characters, I did feel like their story was told fully.
The feelings of the two MCs jump off the page, a remarkable feat for a short book. We aren't bogged down by a lot of back story or setting up, we're into the tension right out of the gate. The plot is flawed, IMO, though. Without giving too much away, the reason the woman holds back is inconsistent with the rest of her personality. Part of what makes these stories work is the compassion we feel for the characters, we root for them, experience their angst with them. But if it doesn't make sense, we're left with more "Huh?" than "Ahhhh..."
Mostly sex scenes without any build-up. I was surprised by John taking a dildo up the ass, especially because the scene started with it already in place. Lots of telling to keep the story short which is my main criticism. Didn't feel the development of the romance. John already loved Kelsie so that was fine but she went from hating him to having hot sex in a day to love and marriage by the end of the week.

What a sizzling, sweet, short story! I loved the couple's chemistry and the hero, McBride is total swoon worthy! A fabulous friends to lovers story and the heat these two radiate is nothing short of combustible!
Loved this book!!! I highly recommend reading this before reading Grey's Awakening...it's a very sweet romance that you will definitely carry with you even after you finish the book...
This was a short read by Cameron Dane. Kelsie has pink hair, lots of piercings, various tattoos and is a size 16. John is a tall dark and handsomely somber business owner. As different as they seem, they both share a childhood being raised by Kelsie's grandmother when their own parents were neglectful. For most of that childhood Kelsie and John bickered and agitated one another so when John shows up at her brother's cabin during her week of vacation Kelsie is anything but thrilled. Sparks quickly ignite though and we learn that John has wanted to do more than argue with Kelsie for a long time. Convincing her stop arguing and start doing other things, however, takes a bit of work!
This was the first time I read anything by Dane. Overall it was decent! I LOVE Kelsie! She is a girl after my own style and I would have loved to get into her personality and life a bit more. I loved John too because he obviously has a lot of depth to his personality. Again, I would have like to seen this explored more. Honestly, most of the book was sex! Now, you won't hear me complaining about sex in a book...EVER...but there is a point when I start feeling like enough already and let's talk about the story or the characters! Oh, and let me rephrase that. Honestly, most of the book was fucking...sex or making love is not the author's style. It was rough around the edges in terms of description and details. Still, I won't say I didn't enjoy it on some level!
Having read Book 2 in this series first, the aptly titled Grey's Awakening, and having loved the book, I was grateful for the opportunity to read about how Grey's sister, Kelsie, and his best friend, John, got together. This is a novella, and though I knew it was going in, I always curse the fact that novellas are too short. This is of course my flaw, not theirs, but it always takes a little something away for me because of it. In e-book format, this is only a 73 page story. That said, this was a complete story even in those short pages.
Personally, I am glad I read the books in the order I did as it filled in many things for this abbreviated love story. I recommend doing so if you decide to engage this series.
I loved both Kelsie and John in this story. While I thought the characters were conceptually repetitive to Grey's Awakening - one a straight laced, conservative, successful, sexy businessman and one an artsy, self-employed, pink-haired, tattooed and pierced free-spirit - the formula still worked. Their exchanges were emotional and intense at times, but also playful and humorous. The sex was ever-present. I'm not one to balk at extra hot sex scenes, but I might have liked a bit more dialogue as these characters had great chemistry and over 10 years of miscommunication to make up for. Nonetheless, this was a very enjoyable read and completely buttoned up from start to finish.
I'm not usually an erotic romance reader, but this novella was recommended when I sought recs for one of my favorite themes (discussed below). This story was very good at weaving the emotional development of the H and h throughout their physical interactions. Because they're isolated at a cabin for a week, they are constantly in each other's company and learning more about each other beyond the antagonistic exchanges that had been their previous norm. Add to that constant companionship the fact that they've been frenemies for some 20 years already, and the development of their relationship surprisingly doesn't feel rushed or unrealistic, given the short one week time span of the story.
This story would probably be more of a 3 to 3.5 for me, but I gave it a little boost to four because it executes well one of my favorite tropes: the H's unrequited love for the h. Related to that, I loved the "here's the truth" scene when John confesses to Kelsie that he's always been fascinated with her, and yes, she is, and has always been, The One. *shivers* I was grinning like a fool during that scene, then straight through the epilogue.
I don’t read too many contemporary romance or erotica, but this short contemporary erotica romance got my attention from a couple of Goodreaders’ reviews and the premise of the story drew me in. It’s only 75 pages so I decided to give it a try. In the past, the few erotica or borderline erotica stories I’ve read lacked emotion or an overall purpose other than to present readers sex on a page. Basically, the main dish is usually the sex and however hot or imaginative the sex is, I’ve been left feeling like I wasted my time. Not so with this short story.
This is a sexy story with heart. Seriously, if the sex were taken out completely, I would have still enjoyed this couple. The theme/s of this book is one that I’m a sucker for..the “I’ve loved you for years,” “childhood friends to lovers,” and “the hero is the heroine’s brother’s best friend.” – Alluring, right? Well.. I was definitely lured and in reading the story, something about the characters, the love scenes, and the secluded cabin setting clicked with me. I felt the hero’s angst over the heroine, the attraction between them, and the romance. The sex was just icing on the cake..a very delicious one! *Fanning myself *
I'm a sucker for friends to lovers stories, but this was friends to lovers with a twist. It was more like frenemies to lovers, at least on her side. He was her twin brother's best friend. They sort of grew up together because of John's parents -- he spent more time at their home than his own because of a rough family life. And along the way he fell in love, but didn't think he had a shot so he never pursued it. And she has a mouth on her and they fought constantly, even about stupid things. It seemed like the classic pulling-the-hair-of-the-girl-you-like childish stuff, but that was their life. She is on the larger side, and he's perfect, so she thinks she couldn't possibly fit into his concept of an ideal woman. But boy things change. It was so sweet how patient he was with her. And even though I get tired of hearing whiny female inner dialogue, I could totally see why Kelsie felt the way she did. Super freaking hot sex, too!
This was a really nice short story with all the right, exciting elements. It went down very smoothly.
Kelsie and McBride [John], have known each other for many years. The tie that binds them is Kelsie's twin brother and their shared childhood memories. They each have a bit of baggage to overcome. They are both now adults and successful in life. She is a tattoo artist and owns her own shop - doing very well. He is in investments and is in business with her brother.
John has loved Kelsie for years but has never been able to get past her barriers. They find themselves at her brothers cabin at the same time on vacation and decide to share the place -- neither wanting to leave. The story goes on from there.
I liked what author was able to do with the character and story development in a short story. I will definitely read more by this author. Very nicely done.
This was the first E book I read. It proberly didnt help that I decided to read it on my I phone instead of a proper Kindle or E reader. But I didnt enjoy reading from a screen.
The book seemed really short to me? And there was absoultly NO backstory and no plot. It just jumped straight into it.
Alot of sex is an understatment! This whole book was page after page of bed romping!
I wanted to know more about John. His point of view was far more interesting, in my opinion. I couldn't relate to Kelsie. I liked that she was her own woman, but I didn't like how she treated John. Ok, I'm dumb, ha ha, that was the point of the story, but the fact that she wasn't telling him what she was really thinking was frustrating.
Very very hot sex scenes. I wish authors of het books would explore men's sexuality as fully as this novella does.
Kelsie and John are forced to stay for a week in a cabin since none of them is willing to leave.Kelsie is furious first and doesnt want John to stay there because she thinks that he thinks she is a freak,John makes a plan to make Kelsie see him as somthing more than her brothers best friend.A kiss is the perfect opportunity for that. The story was good bad it tired me at some point and thats the reason I rated with 4 stars and not 5.
You could tell from the start that this was a good read..short but good. I love when the heroine is not a size 0 (which is not a size)!! She's a average size and a strong willed girl!! These two spark from the very beginning..would loved if the relationship could have explored more what they will go thru to stay together, but otherwise I enjoyed it.
Nothing much to look forward to this swift read about John and Kelsie spending a week holed up at a cabin amid a burgeoning romance and sizzling sex. Hmmm..okay! There might be something appealing after all.Ha!
