About the author

Dr. Kristine K. Kershul is an author, publisher, linguist and teacher. She founded Bilingual Books, Inc. in 1981 with the publication of her first book, "German in 10 Minutes a Day." She has authored books, audio CDs, phrase guides and interactive computer software for 20 languages.

Kershul attributes her lifelong passion for languages to her family: she grew up in a trilingual home on the where, in addition to English, her father spoke Croatian and her mother spoke Danish.

Found the 1989 version of this Spanish workbook at a used book store - a little outdated but kinda vibed with it. I don’t think I’ll be needing to remember the section about sending los telegramas.

This all inclusive "how to" book is perfect for learning the basics needed for traveling to a Spanish-speaking country, or even to use right here in the U.S. where over 57 million people speak Spanish. The book begins with an alphabet pronunciation guide, that presents examples of letter sounds in words written phonetically in English. Key question words such as who, what, when, where, why, how and how much, are the next lesson. Vocabulary starts with every day items you see in your home and community, followed by numbers and colors. Words and pictures for the denominations of money are included with writing exercises. Days of the week and months or the year are learned by formulating questions about them. Prepositions, conjugations, verb and noun placement in conversations are practiced throughout the book. Sticky labels, flash cards, a foldable- tear out menu guide and glossary are tangible extras to use at home or take with you on a trip. Enrichment activities, such as crossword puzzles, a family tree, and map reading are also embedded in the pages. The emphasis to work on your Spanish skills for just ten minutes a day makes it seem doable, not impossible. One will find quick success that way and be encouraged to add more minutes of practice each day simply because you are engaged! While the phonetic writing helps one to pronounce words correctly, it is suggested that you also listen to others speak the language. This is great for anyone working on the A1 material of CEFR Spanish (or perhaps very early A2 Spanish will have some benefit)… if you are any skill level higher than that though, look elsewhere as this content will be too easy for you… also a few of the words are starting to be a bit “dated” as this was originally published over 40 years ago and most recently in 2007… so be prepared to see some words that may be less culturally relevant in 2024 and beyond…

My kids enjoyed this, for the most part. At first, the lessons truly were doable in fifteen minutes, which is enthusing. Then they started to get longer, and I had to break them in half or even thirds. The stickers didn't really work for our classroom--they're intended for use in a house--but the flashcards in back are useful. I'd use this again.
