Howard Parker wants to be Secretary of Homeland Security, and he's not letting some punk Marines stand in his way, even if one is now a reporter in his hometown of Seattle. Mac Davis likes being a reporter. No one shoots at him, he eats real meals regularly -- what's not to like? Then someone kidnaps his friends, and tries to kill him. Mac doesn't know who or why, but he plans to find out. And make them pay. First book of the Mac Davis thrillers.
L.J. Breedlove is a former journalist writing about what she knows: complicated people, small towns, big cities, cops, reporters, politicians, assorted bad guys. Mystery novels.
Awesome read, characters and storyline. Started off slow for me but really picked up! Out to get a crook who has been in the Marines and now wanting to be able to be high in the government. Lots of murders and dishonesty going on. A best friend gets killed of a reporters, who was an ex marine. The reporter, his friends sister and another friend decides to get the guy responsible. A definite must read!
This story kept you on your toes until the end. Lots of suspense and action. The main character Mac was quite the character. Loved all of his brothers. The romantic relationship was cool too. Can't wait to read the next book and see what trouble he gets into.
Lots of action, great characters. The good and then the good you love to hate. Sadness, love, travel, politics, betrayal everything that makes a great action story.
Trust No One is a page turner that follows a former marine turned reporter who becomes a victim of a conspiracy to kill him and his fellow marines, because they were aware of illegal activity ordered by a former commander, now a potential cabinet appointee. I'd not seen any of the author's work before but if this is an example, I will be reading a lot more of her work. I did find a an item or two that were line editing errors/oversights but they weren't serious enough to rate the story lower. The main character, Mac Davis, is a memorable protagonist that makes one want to read the other books in the series, in a genre similar to Reacher and Gray Man novels, except with a more traditional career. Highly recommended.
What more could you want in action, intrigue and loyalty? If you like it when the good guys win this is the book to read. It's #1 in a series but works well as a stand alone.Yes, I am buying the next in the series. I don't want to leave these great characters behind.
I generally enjoyed the book and it kept me engaged. Overall, I recommend it.
One criticism is that there were several grammatical errors that should have been caught in the editing process. Another criticism is that the bad guys pretty much confess their life stories, rather than the good guy discovering them in more clever ways.
An enjoyable action thriller with the added bonus and tension of a newsdesk setting. The pacing was excellent and the little doses of humor worked well. I highly recommend it as a holiday or weekend read.
Fast and furious. Little bit stretching and should have been edited in places like, explaining the thinking / feelings of Davis- repeated often, which gives a feeling that did for adding pages. But, definetly a thrill ride 👍
A very suspenseful novel. The plot about a crooked politician is quite believable. The author has written something that is easy to read and understand.
The first book in a series and if this is the first can’t wait to read more. A normal day turns into life and death for several. A man just doing his job. But a man with a past to settle scores for friends and family.
I was hooked with this storyline from the opening prologue… Mac Davis is like Clark Kent in the newsroom… and Superman (or perhaps Jack Reacher?) when he goes off grid. It’s an interesting mix of politics, crime, corruption and a lust for power. This is a good one, although the language is abrasive in places (unlike the writing talent of Lee Child) but it’s certainly a good story. RECOMMENDED
Great book that encourages me to read more Mac Davis thrillers
This is my first Mac Davis thriller and I will certainly be watching for more. The story line was powerful, the characters well defined, the pace was good and the ending done well. Some of the activities described caused people to die, both good and bad people. That’s realistic and I like realistic. When all the good guys live and the bad guys die, it doesn’t ring true to real life. This story does ring true. I did take one star off for editing. I’m not one to usually pick on editing. My brain usually reads past typos and normal editing issues. They simply don’t bother me. However, this book had a number of editing errors that pulled me out of the story and made me reread a sentence to get its meaning. I don’t like that. In addition, the flow is a little choppy. I’m reading along and suddenly I’m reading from a different viewpoint. Again, that’s ok, but there’s no warning. At least add spacing, a chapter break or even a squiggly line. Just give me something to say we’re now reading in a new location from a different character. Overall, though, this is a great thriller and I will be looking for more Mac Davis books.
It wasn’t until I as reading the author notes that I remembered the lead characters are fictitious. Not sure what that that says about me accepting all the killing and beatings as if that is normal. Now that I am no longer seeing/ reading the story and back to reality, I can say it’s really, really good. Ms L.J. knows how to write a compelling story albeit a fairytale. The kind the involves powerful people in Washington, the FBI, and the CIA.
This was extremely hard to put down. I started reading it on a long flight from Adelaide to Cairns, Australia but didn’t finish it. As soon as we checked into our AirBnB I picked the book up again…to the point my wife wondered if we were going to go exploring the city or sit on the balcony and read the rest of the day! Good plot lines, plenty of action.
Nice change to get a book with characters you an like, hate and laugh with. I was just starting to think I couldn’t find a really good book. Thanks L.J. Breedlove for a couple days entertainment.
Well written, excellent characterization, tightly plotted. I could not put this down. I fell asleep reading it late at night, then, once I woke a few hours later, got out of bed and finished it. Completely satisfying ending. Highly recommended.
The name of the book says it all. Very well written and definitely is true of how the world works unfortunately. Definitely recommend to thriller mystery readers a like.
