One man craves family, the other isolation; neither of them was searching for forever love.
Experienced and much-in-demand horse trainer Levi doesn't need or want people. With his horse and dog at his side, he lives out of his trailer and trains horses in the summer to earn just enough to head south for winter. Infrequent hook-ups with no-tell cowboys takes care of sex, but the moment any connection gets anywhere near complicated, he moves on. Losing a lover to violence has taught him that if he's alone, he can't get hurt, and in return, he avoids the pain of loss. Everything in his easy-going life is on track until he knocks over Quinn, a pink-haired stranger who pirouettes in front of his truck, sits in his lap and calls him cowboy with the sexiest voice he's ever heard. Anger turns to frustration, lust turns to love, and by the end of the summer, Levi doesn't know which way to turn.
Quinn loses everything when the cops find his brother's body on the remains of a compound that belonged to a cult. Damaged and vulnerable, Max had been the only safe place for Quinn in his otherwise cold family, but finding out that Max might have had a son sends Quinn to Wyoming and the Lennox Ranch. When he's knocked to the ground on day one at the ranch, he wonders if maybe he should have thought things through better. After all, he'd bought two horses and a house to get close enough to Lennox ranch just to see if he was an uncle. He craves love, connection and is excited to be part of a family, searching for a place where he can finally stop running. He never meant to fall for the closed-off cowboy, but somehow Levi steals his heart and Quinn falls in love.
RJ Scott writes heartwarming, passionate MM/gay romance stories where every man finds his happily ever after. When not writing, she enjoys reading books, watching movies, spending time with her family, following Formula 1 (Forza Ferrari!), and cheering on the Pittsburgh Penguins. I love it when RJ writes cowboys, especially when they come along with a big dose of hurt/comfort and wounded souls like this one does.
Both Levi and Quinn have serious issues over bad parenting, abandonment and feelings of worthiness, but they couldn't be more different if they tried.
It was great to be back at the Lennox Ranch and see that Micah and Daniel are still going strong, Rachel and Scott are happy and that life is traveling in the right direction for them all after the events of Winter Cowboy
This story had lots of my favourite tropes as well as the opposites attract theme, Levi is a rough and tough guy, but he's hiding a need to be on his knees for someone who'll let him give up control.
Quinn might look like he'd be blown over by a strong wind but he has a core of steel and the gymnastic flexibility and self-defence awareness to look after not only himself but to be everything Levi needs.
The secrets Quinn is hiding form the majority of the tension points in the narrative, there's a bit of "toing and froing" between the two men but it never becomes onerous.
It's medium steamy with a fair amount of UST and the one full on smexy scene we get is powerfully emotive, as Quinn edges Levi into giving in to his desire to submit. It's hot 😉
But overall, this is an emotional romance, feelings of guilt warring with a need to belong, fears of giving in to change and ultimately, hope and longing for a happy ending. The Epilogue is a wonderful drawing of a close to this part of their lives and a solid step into that future.
Now, I'm wondering if Chris will be next and whether Connor might be on the cards for him or if Sheriff Neil is going to win out there?!

I liked this one a bit more than the first book. Quinn was an exceptional character. Determined to escape his poisonous parents...determined to find the son his brother Max never got to know and tell him about his dad. Max was Quinn's big brother and he idolized and missed him with every breath he took. Things started out well, but you just know that lives build on lies, even ones told with the best of intentions, are going to coming back to eat you alive. I was glad that Quinn had Levi when things began to fall apart. Levi thought he would never have or deserve love, but he was starting to think that he may have something with Quinn. Levi never gave up until he convinced Quinn that they could have a life together. I loved getting to know Quinn and by extension Max. Book 1 really should be read first to help you to get a better understanding of the characters, but this can stand by itself. I hope that there will be more in this series.
Another book with a many years later sequel that was definitely worth the wait! I remember reading winter cowboy in 2018 and really liking it, so I was pretty excited to visit the ranch again. I really loved Quinn and Levi, maybe more than Micah and Daniel (though I did enjoy their story too). There's just something special on how they mesh in their individual ways of screwed up. I wish we'd gotten more scenes with them together.
It’s been over 3 years since I read the first book in this series, Winter Cowboy, and I didn’t have time to read it again as much as I might have wanted to. That is why I’m going to say that I think you can read this book as a standalone as long as you understand that characters from the first book are secondary ones in this book. I really think you should read book one, though, because it’s a great story and you will probably enjoy Summer Drifter even more if you do.
The blurb for this book is excellent so I’m not going to restate it. I loved this book so much. It kept me captivated from beginning to end. I had so much sympathy for Quinn and Levi. Both of them had crappy stuff happen to them in the past that strongly affected how they behave now.
I loved the rich and descriptive writing; I really want to visit a place like Whisper Ridge someday. I especially loved the scenes with the animals. Levi’s horse Blake, and dog Sky, were integral to the story and I wished I could reach out and pet them more than once while I was reading.
RJ Scott’s books always bring tears to my eyes at least once and Summer Drifter was no exception. I had both sad and happy tears. There were more than a few tense moments in the story but I wouldn’t really call it angsty. I think there was only once scene where a couple of characters were in peril.
I really don’t know if RJ has more books planned for this series but I know who I’d like to see paired up next. I’m not telling, but their names might both begin with C. 😊
A copy of this book was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
How do you review a book that from the very beginning grabbed your heart, made you so angry on behalf of one of the main characters, then made you not want to stop reading because you knew you were going on a fantastic ride? A ride that for me anyway, was full of sadness turned to happiness, love and laughter . Not to mention two men who both need and deserve as much happiness as they can get their hands on. There is pain and secrets. Laughter and hot sexy times. Aww moments and a whole list of other great moments and characters in this story. There is a lot going on that I refuse to mention because the reader needs to experience them for themselves. I received an Advanced Readers Copy in exchange for my honest review of this amazing book.
I have read RJ Scott's books since she began writing, and there's quite a few of them I've re read a good few times, and are up there amongst my favourites. I just enjoy her writing. This one is no exception. RJ at her angsty best. I honestly don't believe that this lady is capable of writing a really bad book. In this one she is back to her roots with an story that is filled with angst, drama, and a whole host of emotions that drags you through the ringer with typical moments that have you wanting to throw your kindle! A great story, absolutely made me wring my hands together at times! Lovely ending though. Highly recommended. 4.5 stars.
Quinn and Levi's story. Oh my, what a rollercoaster! RJ Scott does do the rollercoaster ride well and this book is no exception. I absolutely adored Quinn and Levi was perfect for him. From the opening pages, Quinn grabbed my attention and heartstrings and never let go. It was nice to catch up with Micah and Daniel. I don't do spoilers, but this book has it all: giggles, tears, intrigue, and best of all love. Well done RJ Scott, this book was definitely worth waiting for! ***RECOMMENDED***
Finding a part of his dead brother has brought Quinn to the Lennox ranch. What he finds is a part of his brother but also a man he could make a life story with. But with deception comes heartache.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆☆ This is the second book in the series, and ties together plotlines from the first book in very satisfying ways. That said, I think this would be a rich read in its own right too.
It was impossible not to fall for Quinn and his quirkiness, and his being totally out of place in cowboy country. He adopts cowboy style with a degree of panache that few could carry off, and I loved how he was determined to do right in his brother's memory. That he fell so hard for Levi in the process obviously gave us a happily ever after to cheer on.
Levi's nomadic life, his love for his dog and his horse, and his desire to avoid all commitments may have defined his past, but once he meets Quinn, and sees the happiness of Micah and his family, things might just be about to change. I love how the writing gives us a very real sense of how guarded he is, how wariness has kept him from ever really allowing himself to even hope for a home.
A moving, yet upbeat story, with plenty of hot cowboys to admire, and a townie on a mission of restoration. I definitely recommend this hot and sexy romance to you.
Angie – ☆☆☆☆ This book just pulled at my heartstrings. Levi and Quinn are just good together. I love the ranch and how everything makes me feel like part of the family. This book made me laugh, fall in love, and even get mad a few times. Nothing better than a cowboy, his horse, his dog, and his hot man. Great read.
Sarah – ☆☆☆☆ Sweet, angsty, and playful, this story of a surly, misanthropic cowboy who can’t help falling for a wealthy, young horse owner. Quinn and Levi might be complete opposites, but they are both lonely and the Lennox ranch offers them the possibility of a home and a very special chosen family.
I fell hard for Quinn in this book. He’s urbane, privileged, and he unapologetically blurs gender norms. Behind the pretty twink exterior is a brave and determined man who is grieving his brother. If Levi is a predictably grumpy cowboy, Quinn is an unexpected ray of sunshine. I love these two together.
While the characters are great in this story, the story itself feels a little tired. Between the financially vulnerable family ranch and Quinn’s hunt for the nephew who might be the heir to a family fortune, the book relies on tried and slightly overblown romance tropes. It’s an easy and enjoyable read but it is also predictable and not terribly original. This is a fun summer cowboy romance, but it isn’t a terribly memorable read.

4.5 Stars This is the second book in the series. I really enjoyed this one. Quinn pulled on my heartstrings. He deserves to connect with his nephew and find some happiness. You can feel the grief rolling off of him and wanting to find the place he can call home. I love he accepts himself and his comfortable to be him. Levi is one grumpy guy with the needs for no attachments so he has a wandering soul. You can deep down he craves some roots and with a business proposition from an unlikely source. He finds him on a path to a future he never could have predicted. I loved the changes in Levi as he opens himself up to the possibilities. This was a great book small town book. It's one that captures the heart with great characters and their unexpected journeys. This one left me with a huge smile on my face.
I loved reading "Summer Drifter". It's the perfect blend of angst, pain, healing, passion, and love. I had read "Winter Cowboy" previously and, while each book can stand alone, it's great to read both to see the deeper connections. I really hope for another book in the series in the future.
3.5☆ overall 4.5☆ for the story itself - the unique characters, flaws and all, the intensity of the emotions, the heartbreak, and the incredible inner strength, all combine to give a gripping story that has you invested in the characters and the outcome. 1☆ deducted because there were a lot of editing errors - minor typos, the wrong word, missing or extra words, an incomplete sentence, and two major inconsistencies. I expected the same level of writing in this book as I have read in many other books by this accomplished author and was quite disappointed.
Quinn comes to the area to find his brother’s son and wife. His brother left home years ago, with no communication. It is a twisty mystery and Quinn must lie to keep them all safe. Quinn shows up under a false pretense of horse training, while he is searching for them. Horse trainer, Levi and Quinn get along and fight the feelings that grow. When they get some sexy times, the men are hot and sizzling. The story moves along, all of the characters are terrific and the story is riveting. ENJOY !
This is the second book in the Whisper Ridge series and it was just as great as the first one. This is an amazing story about finding a place to call home. I loved this book from the first page to the last. I can't wait to see what comes next.
Look, I was ambiguous throughout this one even though on their own that man on the cover, cowboy trainer Levi, and rich Boston boy Quinn are absolutely fascinating characters.
I just kept getting thrown by the situations they were in, how fast Levi succumbed to his sexual instincts, and most especially how they kept playing off each other in at least a dozen scenes that just never felt satisfying.
Yet, I kept reading because there was a reason Quinn wound up in Wyoming and I wanted to see how one of my favorite authors managed to squeeze her readers into a denouement, climax and epilogue that worked.
Well, she did it and that's all I am going to say because, as you can see, I gave it five denouement, climax and epilogue stars.
ARC received from the author for an honest review.
Quinn Rhodes AKA Alexander Dawson comes from a wealthy family with a myriad of problems. He's reeling from the death of his brother and is finally ready to leave the family for good. After a big F you to his father, he heads to Wyoming to meet someone who could possibly be his nephew and then start his new life. What he doesn't plan for though is falling in love with Wyoming and everyone there.
Levi Brennan is a horse trainer that's in high demand. He also has itchy feet. He doesn't stay anywhere for very long. He's just leaving his latest job when an old acquaintance stops him and offers him a job. Wyoming is as good a place to go next so he accepts.
Quinn arrives in Whisper Ridge and decides to take a walk up to the Lennox Ranch to scope out the situation. While he's meandering along he dances his way in front of Levi's truck. Quinn is dazed and allows Levi to take him to the ranch. Levi is attracted to Quinn's out and proud persona but he hides it behind a gruff manner. Quinn is attracted to Levi's gruff cowboy persona and precedes to flirt. Both men are hiding things and are both wounded creatures. Will they be able to work things out or are they just too different?
I really liked this book. It's a slow burn romance between a cowboy and a city slicker. I would have liked a little more background on the two MCs, more detail on the heartaches they had gone through. Did Levi ever reconnect with his brothers or cousin? And I guess I'm vindictive because I wanted Quinn's father to have to pay for what he put Quinn and Max through but he was just muzzled. I highly recommend this book and hope Rj decides to write more in this series. I can think of two characters that seemed like they needed a good HEA. Wink Wink Rj! LOL!
This book goes on the shelf of favorites written by RJ Scott and what rises it to the top are the characters. They were all broken in some way or another, and I mean all the people at Whisper Ridge ( if you've read Winter Cowboy you know what I mean)...and maybe that's why it didn't take long for Quinn and Levi to feel right at home at the ranch.
Because, you see, Quinn and Levi were damaged, too. The author wrote them achingly real, in such a way they stroke a cord in me. Levi was a gruff loner, not interested in making friends or building lasting connections, with a shield around his heart he'd thought impenetrable. And Quinn ...he was precious. Good thing nobody saw inside his heart and mind, because they might of gotten dizzy. Inside he was a turmoil of fears, hopes, insecurities...and laughter and joy.
These two didn't start off particularly well. At the beginning they were like two magnets that would attract one moment and force back the other. Their interactions were delightful. Levi would get standoffish and, around him, Quinn would became all adorable and nervous, if not standoffish himself. As expected, eventually the pull became stronger than the push, and their chemistry was beyond the charts incediary...with a surprising dynamic that I found incredibly hot. The only way to describe it was they were custom made for each other, sexually and emotionally.
They found love, home and acceptance, with each other and at Whisper Ridge. Their story put me through the whole gamut of emotion, I laughed out loud, smiled and even cried a bit. It was a touching and delicious combination of funny, sweet, sad and sexy that left a lasting impression on me.
Also, at this point Whisper Ridge and its amazing people, the sense of family they give are almost home for me, too, and I'd love it if RJ Scott would write more books in this series.
I don't think I ever read a book by this author that I didn't enjoy, but in my opinion, what she writes best, are her angsty cowboys. If you are a fan of opposites attract /family found trope with just right amount of angst and heat, spiced with a healthy dose of humor this is a must read. Quinn and Levi come from worlds so different that they may as well be from different planets and if there wasn't for some dark family secrets they would have never met. Quinn is a hot mess, flamboyant openly gay, rich young man with a heart of gold and Levi is semi closeted jaded horse trainer with not much more to his name than a horse and a dog he loves, a trailer and a great professional reputation. He has no roots and has no intention of settling down. They both come with a heavy emotional baggage from their pasts. Can they possibly be what they need to each other? Will Quinn's half baked plan to make up for his father's wrongdoings backfire badly and make him loose much more than he ever imagined? This book will make you feel, smile and keep you on your toes from the page one to the end. What I appreciated and enjoyed the most is that all the characters in the book, including children and animals, are realistic which is rare in MM fiction. No sugarcoating - just realistic reactions, real life. It's not absolutely necessary to read the first book in the series to enjoy this one - there's just enough of the backstory that you won't get lost, but go for the first one too. I loved it. There are two characters in this book that deserve story or stories of their own so I'm really hoping that this is not the end of this series.
Quinn is officially my new favourite book character. Constantly moving, yet unexpectedly clumsy; full of flights of fancy, always spinning daydreams, yet anchored by grief; delightfully and unabashedly himself from his pink hair to his tasselled “cowboy wear” . . . he made my heart happy.
Levi, on the other hand, took a bit of time to warm up to. Drifting from place to place, never developing true relationships, he had only his reputation as a top-notch horse trainer, his horse and his dog. But once he gives his heart to Quinn, he is all in. The contrast is breath-taking.
RJ Scott is known for developing multi-faceted characters who are flawed (just like real life) but she exceeded even her own standards this time. The way these characters push and pull at each other is thoroughly entertaining and immensely satisfying. I didn’t read this book, I devoured it. Their chemistry was WOWZA.
If you haven’t already read Winter Cowboy (Whispering Ridge #1), you may want to consider reading it first for true full enjoyment of this second instalment in the series.
What an epic start to a book. Chapter 1 will leave your reeling with anger and heartache and anxious to turn the page. I couldn’t put it down. It is full of emotional moments that had me so ‘teary eyed’ I’m surprised I could read at all.
Quinn is my new favourite character of RJ’s books. He broke my heart, made me cry and laugh all in a span of a few pages. Quinn is so unapologetically himself that you can’t help but love him. Levi is your quintessential lonesome cowboy who has his life turned upside down when he meets Quinn.
There is a line when Levi talks about training the horse, “ Spirit is everything.” For me this also referred to Quinn. When you read the book you’ll understand.
I was gifted an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I wholeheartedly recommend this book. Curl up in your favourite reading place and enjoy.
Secrets and deception brings Quinn to Whisper Ridge in search of his possible connection to Micah's nephew Laurie, but it also brings him in the direct path of cowboy and horse trainer Levi. They say first impressions are always the best, and fortunately for Quinn and Levi that is a no longer true. But can hate and discomfort turn into commitment and family? Or are the two loaners destined to walk through their lives alone? With a storyline that once again tugged on my heart strings and even more characters that could benefit from a tight bear hug, this was another great read from R.J. Scott. Encompassing that family is those who make your life better in the end, this will be another book from R.J. Scott that will be read and re-read time and time again.
A wonderful, angsty cowboy vs. billionaire get-over-yourself love story. I love that Levi and Quinn both know what they want, but keep getting in their own way. Mistakes happen. People mess up. Some hidden truths shouldn’t ruin everything; you have to be able to move past mistakes and be happy.
And this story has one of the best last lines ever! I actually snorted out a laugh. Of course, it’s followed by an epilogue, and you know how I feel about epilogues. But…as far as epilogues go, this one was pretty good.
Having read and loved Winter Cowboy I couldn't wait to get my hands on Summer Drifter. It was so worth the wait! This story has all the feels a reader could want. Quinn and Levi have both experienced pain and are wary of getting emotionally involved. There is also so much joy and happiness to be found in this story. Combine that with the heat these two generate and I'm sold! The story flowed beautifully and I was unable to stop reading until I reached the very end. I am hoping (fingers crossed) for more books in this series!
