Joe Crowley and his dog have been on the road a long time when they stop over in the struggling fishing and logging town of Delilah on the coast of Oregon in autumn of 1962. A veteran of the Second World War and disgraced former author, Joe has squandered his prospects, fame, and family in a decade-long struggle with alcoholism and unresolved trauma. He feels his luck has turned around when he meets an eccentric, wealthy fan who approaches him with a strange proposition: the story that will save his career. On an unorthodox patronage, Joe is commissioned to live in a historic lighthouse keeper’s cottage at the edge of a remote headland three miles from town. There, he is to sample firsthand the isolation of a lighthouse keeper as he researches and writes the saga of the Ushers: the clannish, abusive, and cult-like family who tended the lighthouse in the 1910s, before perishing in unexplained circumstances.
As Joe’s amateur sleuthing brings him closer to uncovering a dying town’s darkest shame, he comes to believe Cape Contrition is under the mastery of a diabolical and ancient power, manifest in a powerful supernatural entity known as the Drowned Woman. To understand this evil, Joe must learn the truth about the grisly fate of the Usher Family and follow the evidence through tragic local history and a disturbing series of suicides in town. But if Joe and his reluctant allies can discover a way to break the Drowned Woman’s power before even greater disaster strikes, he must first confront the demons of his past that brought him to Cape Contrition in the first place. After all, if he fails, who will think twice about an aging alcoholic writer throwing himself into the sea after living alone in that forlorn house? Especially after what he did.

Cape Contrition is a terrifying, atmospheric, character-driven blend of Gothic fiction, paranormal and psychological horror, and Noir mystery, enriched by the unique setting of the rain-battered coast of the Pacific Northwest.

“Ghosts, abusive cult family, ancient pagan deity from the sea, teenage witches, and government black hats testing experimental weapons… Am I missing anything? Oh, the forest fire coming closer to town every day. That was it.” -Will Blake, Chief of Police in Delilah, Oregon

One of the best books I've ever read. It drew me in from the very beginning and I could not put it down. I never read books in one day but this one I did. Brilliant imagery, excellent editing and an amazing lexicon. Well done, Ben. Well done.

Fantastic supernatural thriller that moves at a clip that entices and terrifies the reader. As a native Oregonian, I was transplanted to the rugged Oregon coastline reliving my own childhood experiences exploring the craggy coastline and daunting lighthouses.

Earnest characters suck the reader in and move the story into a skin-crawling world of loss, trauma, and ghastly terror.

Very entertaining ghost / monster adventure. Great character development and intrigue. Coincidentally is staged not too far from where I grew up on the Oregon coast which made it that much more enjoyable. Highly recommend this book.

A haunting, atmospheric gem — and an unforgettable debut

Cape Contrition is one of those rare reads that creeps under your skin and stays there. Set against the rain-drenched coast of Oregon in the 1960s, it weaves together Gothic horror, noir mystery, and psychological trauma into a slow-burn tale that’s equal parts terrifying and deeply human.

Joe Crowley, a washed-up author and WWII veteran battling alcoholism and guilt, finds himself in the eerie town of Delilah—and what starts as a writing assignment turns into a descent into the town’s buried horrors. Between an abandoned lighthouse, an ancient sea deity, and a string of local tragedies, the story builds tension with chilling precision.

Benjamin Connor Irwin’s writing is moody, immersive, and emotionally raw. The setting is practically a character in itself—misty, brooding, and heavy with secrets. And the supernatural elements? Genuinely unsettling, but never overdone. Think Shirley Jackson meets True Detective Season 1, with a dash of Lovecraft and a noir soul.

If you're into character-driven horror with depth, mystery, and a deep sense of place, this is one to pick up. It’s the kind of book that lingers after you’ve turned the last page.

Can’t wait to see what comes next in the Crowley & Iwamoto Files.

Cape Contrition is a thriller with substance. This isn't just a ghost story to keep you up at night. You'll be reminded of your own demons while Joe Crowley works to overcome his. Each character is someone I would love to have dinner with and Irwin's description of them, and the scenery of the Oregon Coast, made me feel like I was. With a twist I did NOT see coming that caused me to jump off the couch and yell, "Are you kidding me?" this book is one to keep on your shelf to read two or three more times to see what you missed the first go around. Irwin clearly did his homework when writing this book. The care and attention to detail with which it is written allows the reader to feel respected by the author, something I have rarely felt reading thrillers published in the last 10 years. I would say Irwin is the next Stephen King, Agatha Christie, or Gillian Flynn, but he is in a league of his own. But this book and get your horror fan friends a copy too!

I said before, I haven't really read a lot of horror books so this was a foray for me. Ben Irwin is a strong writer with a good sense of character and story. I can see this playing out very well on screen and can't wait for the hulu miniseries. I enjoyed the dynamic between Hana and Joe and I hope there is more of that in volume two. Give me a buddy cop ghost story, Ben! And also nice job can'twait for the sequel lol. 👍👏👏

This was a great debut book by the author, and I am definitely looking forward to more similar stories.

Mix Jaws with the Amityville Horror, with some Dashiell Hammett thrown in, add a dash of Lovecraft and bring it from the Northeast to the Northwest, and you have this novel.

Some parts dragged a bit but they didn’t last long before the action picked up again.
