A new supernatural mystery series by the author of Thrown Away, Diary of the Displaced, Arisen, and Dustfall.
Jake Adler was only supposed to be in hospital for a few days to have his appendix removed, then he was should have been home, recovering, and ready to go back to work at the burger restaurant in a couple of weeks. It should have been that simple, but things didn’t turn out that way.
What Jake thought were nightmares have turned out to be real, and the ghostly man talking to him in his dreams hasn’t gone away. To make it worse, a child has gone missing from the hospital. The police have found no trace of where she disappeared to, and the ghost seems to think that Jake is the only person that can save her.
The problem is that to save her he must cross over into a nightmare realm...
GLYNN JAMES is an author of science fiction, post-apocalyptic, dark fantasy, horror, and dystopian fiction. His love of science fiction began when he was eight years old after discovering HP Lovecraft and Richard Matheson, and then later on Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, James Herbert, Clive Barker, and Stephen King.
In addition to being author of the “ALTERLIGHT” supernatural mystery thriller series, he is author of the dark sci-fi series "DIARY OF THE DISPLACED", the post-apocalyptic "THROWN AWAY" series, and co-author of the "ARISEN" series and the “DUSTFALL” series.
Not the sort of supernatural book I normally read, those tend to feature devils, demons & evil spirits along with ghosts & while ghosts are involved here, the story veers towards fantasy. Not that it was a problem in this case as the story was both intriguing & atmospheric.
In short, patient Jake finds himself moving in a hospital straight out of a horror film. A gloomy, dirty, abandoned building far different from the building he entered for his operation, but as a shadow falls on him everything changes & he's back in a clean bed on a "normal" ward. The spookiness of the dilapidated building comes over really well making it so easy to visualise Jake's visits in the deserted hospital.
But was Jake dreaming? Or had he entered a parallel world? Jake finds things increasingly strange as he encounters Larry....a ghost. It's hard to say much more without spoiling things for future readers but Jake finds himself helping Larry to find out why he seems trapped in the hospital. This quest brings in an old friend of Larry's & Jake finds himself mixed up with things he would never have imagined. While this was an intriguing part of the story & contained some good ideas & twists, at times it took the story into the fantasy realm. However, it flowed on nicely from events at the hospital & I liked the way the concept worked & held my interest.
While some of what has occurred is explained by the conclusion, there is still much left unsaid...but wait....this is the first instalment of the "Alterlight" series remember? And it certainly whets your appetite for more to come.....
This was a very good and interesting book. I'm a bit confused though, because it is included in the Diary of the Displaced box set as Book 7. So, I went into it thinking it was a continuation of the other 6 books in that series. When I realized it was a new book I checked its Goodreads page where it is called Book 1 of the Afterlight series. That makes more sense, but it still isn't clear why it and its sequels are included in the Displaced series boxed set. Maybe all will become clear in the future books. I look forward to finding out what happens next.
I like a good horror / fantasy / dystopia story......... this one was ok. 3 stars. I would have scored higher if it had a better ending. It is the first one in a series so doesn't really conclude. I hate that. I enjoy a series but each story needs a definitive ending for me. I don't want to feel obliged to read the next one. I mean, sometimes I can't wait but other times not so much.

Jake Alder is a twenty-two-year-old fast-food worker with appendicitis. The operation is successful, but he has to stay another day to get all the anesthesia out of his system. During that day, a little girl disappears somewhere in the hospital, and no one can find a trace of her. Jake has a friendly conversation with an older patient, Larry, with the number twelve tattooed on his neck. Jake is not sure at first, but it seems as if Jake is the only person who can see Larry.
Jake keeps waking up in an alternative version of his reality. The hospital looks like no one has set foot in it for many decades, and the ravages of time and weather have taken their toll.
This story is off to a fascinating start that holds your attention from the first page. And we still have to deal with lost time, dog-like monsters in the apocalypse that will kill Jake if they get the chance, a smoke monster with a mysterious agenda, the little missing girl, and Larry’s secrets. And that’s not even half of it.
This novel is a captivating introduction to this new series. James has set the stage for this new adventure with a mysterious tale, where many things are not what they seem. I highly recommend this new novel to all students of the supernatural. This first book of the series was very satisfying. James answers many of the mysteries in the story and drops hints about secrets revealed in book two.
I don't write reviews for books I stop reading, but this one deserves praise. If you want a very creepy, scary horror story, well written, atmospheric, original, and very much a leave-the-lights-on book, this is for you. It's the reason I stopped...it was scaring me more than is good for me right now. I have been in and out of hospital over the last year and I am not feeling normal yet. Rushes of adrenaline and a racing heart is not comfy for me right now. But this book is so well written I wanted to explain why I quit, not because it was bad, but because it was too good.
I really enjoyed this beginning to the new series by one of my favourite authors. This time, following Jake Alder, who, after an operation in hospital, finds that life is more than it seems.
The writing style is great, the plot nicely mysterious and the characters fit brilliantly into the story as a whole.
I don’t give spoilers but will say that this supernatural tale has its twists and turns, villains and heroes and is so intriguing that I loved it from beginning to end – yes, of course, I’m now reading the second book.
I’ve read much of what Glynn James has written and loved them all. This book did not disappoint. Jake sees ghosts. Jake crosses over to scary places without knowing how he does it. All the while trying to find a little girl that had disappeared…she ended up in the scary place somehow. Jake and Larry are a good team, but now, after finding about 2 murders, an ancient society of Knight protectors, watches that aren’t watches, and other species that aren’t friendly, well let’s just say the plot thickens. I am going to positively enjoy reading more!
This isn’t my usual genre but I picked it up on Kindle Unlimited out of curiosity and finished it by the following day. It’s a well-written supernatural mystery/suspense novel and it sets the stage for a continuing series.
The author writes atmosphere very well: it’s well-drawn, descriptive and creepy. I’d recommend giving it a try if you like supernatural suspense.
A young man discovers an ability to cross over to alternate realities. Soon he is drawn into a deadly race with an evil group determined to possess an object with frightening power. Aided by two ghosts, he finds himself in a life or death struggle.
This book starts off with promises but soon putters. The pace is slow, the dialogue mundane. When it goes off to focus on the evil cabal it just gets boring and predictable. Not very scary, low on the horror meter.
Jake works in a burger joint, at least until he has to have surgery. He meets a man in the hospital lounge, or at first Jake thought it was a man. It was in reality a ghost. Follow Jake as he finds a different "Instance" of this other place, where the lizard like monsters live. And how Jake goes from pauper to a sort of prince. Great read, lots of twists and action.
I really like Glynns’s books but I have to say this one took me a while to get into. For me the beginning was slow and it wasn’t until about halfway through that I became sucked into the book.
That being said, I enjoyed the book overall and am interested to see where the story goes and I will get the sequel.
I have read most of this author's books and I love them all. He has a way of describing things that makes it easy to visualize the scene. If you like dystopian fiction, I highly recommend Glynn James!
I really enjoyed Where The Lost Go. It was full of mystery, twists and turns and had a great storyline to keep you interested all the way to the end. Definitely will be getting the rest of this series.
After reading another series by this author, I decided to give this series a go. I wasn't disappointed. This book is really well written and seems to pull you in. The way the author writes seems to have me hooked after a few pages.
I found myself wanting to follow Jake through his adventure and find out what happens next. I didn't really expect the ending, as I wasn't sure which way the book would go, so it did keep me guessing.
I can't wait to carry on with the next book in the series
Very slow start but second half makes it worthwhile....
The entire first half of this book is spent in world building and character creation so it requires some perseverance... However, once that is done the novel launches into a very intriguing and captivating tale of secret societies, ghosts, monsters, and strangely parallel universes with their own rules and inhabitants. Caught in the midst of all this is one man struggling to stay alive and learn the rules of his new existence aided only by two ghosts who were both murdered by the " things " now pursuing him... Would never have thought it, but am now planning to read Book Two! Enjoy! Overall, would rate 4.25 to 4.5 stars with a strong.finish!
