About the author

An avid reader of fantasy literature since age six, when she first made her way through The Lord of the Rings, Naomi Novik is also a history buff with a particular interest in the Napoleonic era and a fondness for the work of Patrick O’Brian and Jane Austen. She studied English literature at Brown University, and did graduate work in computer science at Columbia University before leaving to participate in the design and development of the computer game Neverwinter Nights: Shadow of Undrentide. Over the course of a brief winter sojourn spent working on the game in Edmonton, Canada (accompanied by a truly alarming coat that now lives brooding in the depths of her closet), she realized she preferred writing to programming, and on returning to New York, decided to try her hand at novels.

Stupendo.
Avevo letto Uprooted in passato, essendo stato pubblicato in un'edizione separata, quindi questa volta ho letto solo l'inedito Spinning Silver.
È una storia meravigliosa e molto immersiva: ha uno stile di scrittura che permette al lettore di immergersi completamente nella storia. Avevo letto un altro libro della stessa autrice (#Uprooted) che non mi ha fatto però la stessa impressione.
In questo libro mi sono immedesimata completamente nei personaggi, ho immaginato in modo estremamente vivido l'ambientazione e ho vissuto, toccato con mano la storia in prima persona ed è una cosa che non si vede proprio così tanto spesso.
I luoghi descritti sembrano quasi familiari; la situazione in cui versano i personaggi è comprensibile ed è facile provare empatia per loro.
La cosa che mi ha sorpreso di più? I POV dei personaggi.
Ci sono almeno sei punti di vista che ruotano e permettono di vedere la narrazione quasi a 360°. Ma non è questo che mi ha stupito, bensì lo stile di scrittura, che varia ed è unico per tutti i personaggi coinvolti: cambia in base al personaggio che parla e ho trovato questo molto più evidente rispetto a molti altri libri che ho letto. Credo che l'autrice abbia fatto proprio un ottimo lavoro.
La storia è abbastanza unica; ci sono più parti contrapposte che agiscono separatamente in modo coerente per poi intrecciarsi.
Quello che mi è rimasto più nel cuore, e la prima cosa che mi viene in mente quando penso a questo libro, è comunque l'ambientazione della terra degli Staryk, da amante delle stagioni fredde.

Donne. Magia. Coraggio. - Uprooted è un viaggio lento e magnetico nel folklore oscuro. La foresta è iperdescritta, fino a diventare quasi un personaggio a sé, piena di tensione e misteri. Anche la storia di Drago, svelata solo a metà, è un colpo di genio: gioca con le aspettative e costruisce un senso costante di attesa. È un fantasy classico, ma con un tocco moderno e un finale che rimane dentro.Spinning Silver, inizialmente, mi ha spiazzata. Mi aspettavo qualcosa di simile a Uprooted, e la struttura frammentata con i continui cambi di voce mi ha disorientata. Una volta entrata nel ritmo, però, ho apprezzato la ricchezza dei personaggi e delle diverse prospettive. La magia qui è meno immediata, ma più stratificata e, a tratti, più profonda. Il finale, pur diverso da come me lo aspettavo, mi ha coinvolta persino più del libro gemello.Consiglio la lettura di entrambi: pur essendo diversi tra loro, mantengono tratti comuni che permettono ai due romanzi di convivere bene insieme. Comprendo quindi la scelta dell’autrice di proporli in un’unica edizione.

Spinning Silver: This has been on my to read pile for a while and honestly I am a bit disappointed. Partially the issue is too many narrators, it shouldn't take working out for 2-3 pages who is speaking. The romance elements felt forced as well as there was no build up just suddenly there was love. I liked how it is clearly based on Jewish eastern European lore however I think it really struggled to raise out of the limits of a fairy tale and into a full narrative.

Uprooted: This book is the far stronger one of the two. It's a clever tale that starts out as a Rumpelstiltskin style tale but then morphs into something very different. The first part is almost fairytale in nature - lots of spells , magicians and handsome princes but then the second is pure fantasy with bloody battles, magical creatures and a clever twist. I really enjoyed the characters in the book as well as the plot. I probably could have done without the court section as I felt less bothered about what happened there but the setting of the valley was enough for me. I liked the twists and it kept me hooked to the end.

I loved both of these, though I prefer Spinning Silver to Uprooted
