Black Claw Dragons #2

Her Dragon Protector

Rate this book
Can I really trust a dragon with my heart?

When I show up in Black Claw with bruises on my face and a split lip, I’m not looking for another man - I’ve made enough bad choices in that department. I’m ready to lie low with my best friend and pray to god that my ex doesn’t come to find me.

But Axel isn’t like any of the guys I’ve been drawn to before.

I’m not ready for a new relationship. I know that. But Axel sneaks inside my heart before I’ve even realized he’s there, and his touch sets my body alight with desire. But still... there’s something off about him. And when I find out his secret, I’m not sure I can stand the heat.

If my human ex was terrible, could a dragon be any better?
He says it’s fate.
Still -- I’m scared to risk my heart again.
But when danger comes knocking, I know Axel’s the one I need to protect me.

While "Her Dragon Protector" can definitely be read as a stand alone novel, this hot dragon shifter paranormal romance is best read as second in its series!

I really like this series so far, but I gave this one 2 stars. It would have been 4, except for around 80% in the FMC was just getting on my nerves so much, I actually didn’t care what happened to her. I started fantasizing about this book taking a radical turn from traditional PNR lore . . . I mean like, have the FMC reject the fated mate bond with Axel, he’s miserable but moves on with his life because who needs a moronic female that cannot comprehend WHY he couldn’t tell her about himself A week after they met. I mean she didn’t make any sense, even she said “I understand why you had to keep this secret, BUT YOU LIED TO ME, YOU USED ME, blah blah blah.” Oh Gawd it just ruined the whole book for me.

So I decided to end this on my own terms. In MY version, Axel decides that he’s no longer going to be the only one fighting for this relationship and lets her go. Sure he’s miserable for a while, but being miserable alone is far better than being miserable in a relationship. A few years down the road, lo and behold, he meets a newcomer to Black Claw . . . And can it be? He feels the mate bond! The fates have smiled on him and we find out from his grandfather in AZ, that yes, while a fated mate is rare, two fated mates is rarer still. So now he’s got his new misses, who’s smart enough to understand why he couldn’t tell her he’s a dragon on their first date, and decides that having a hawt dragon shifter makes her a lucky woman. And the cherry n the icing on the cake of this lovestory Is that now, his feelings of inadequacy towards his younger brother, Maverick, being an alpha while he’s the older one is assuaged somewhat. I mean the gods did smile on him to send him a second fated mate. One more worthy of him, and Asher, than a dumb blonde who can’t appreciate what was right in front of her. The end.

See? Was that so hard?

Another sweet read for me!

This book two and all though the storyline is different the feeling is the same. Sweet, emotional, and loving read. Storyline is relatable. I believe if you have not lived this you know someone who has which makes it easy to invest in.

I’m loving the Kingston family and their awesome ladies! I love that Ava and maverick and Maddox and hailey are all still around. I love Carla!! But I’m so glad Axel got his happy! I noticed in book 1 that he was withdrawn and now I understand. I also love that Charlotte got hers. And I’m even more glad Logan finally got his. And I love that it’s a romance but it has some mystery and action and intrigue. I usually stick more to the action and intrigue side with a dash of romance but this author just makes it awesome! I’m definitely going to continue my binge of reading all the books lol!

I hated they way Charlotte acted when she found out about shifters. She dragged it out and was rude to Axel’s family even though for weeks she had been and at that time was still continuing to live in their house and eat their food and take advantage of their security and chauffeur services free of charge. Also, the author made a mistake by having Charlotte ask if there was a place to get her nails done when in the previous book she and Ava got drunk on mimosas with the distant relative’s widow who was a “lush” while getting their nails done at her nail salon and James had to pick them up! I’m sure the author could have found another way to introduce Harley into the story.

This series is definitely in the "turn your brain off" category. It's not bad, but don't expect to experience any form of suspense or profound thoughts.

The "Naked Werewolf" series by Molly Harper has a similar vibe, where it's chic-lit with a dash of the paranormal.

Maybe I'll come back to this series when I want something light to read

The story revolves around alpha dragons who are discovering their fated mates, which have traditionally been human females. However, humans are unaware of the dragons' existence and do not feel a bond with them. Thus, dragons can only reveal themselves if they are certain that the woman is the one their fate intended for them.

As these women learn about the new world around them and what it means to be fated, the narrative becomes rich with tension. Each woman also grapples with her own personal challenges, and the dragons will do anything to keep their mates safe.

Emotions run high as the characters confront their circumstances, navigating conflicting feelings of fear, hope, and longing. The presence of strong alpha males adds another layer of complexity to the story.

Amid these challenges, there is an undercurrent of playful interactions. Overall, the narrative is a captivating blend of love, action, and adventure that keeps readers engaged from beginning to end.

So-so

I wanted to like this book more than I did. Was excited to see a woman find a balance post abuse, to give voice to a character not letting someone else's actions define. And I appreciated the PTSD discussions about love and recovery. I just felt like the romance took away the emotional intimacy at times. Not just from Charlotte and Axel but all the characters in general. Also not a lot of shifting in a shifter book.

✨4.0✨
Charlotte and Axel meet when she runs to Ava's house after being assaulted by her then-boyfriend. As soon as he sees her, he knows she is his fated mate. Like the first, this was a good book, but not a big deal to me. M It was great to see the tension building between them and how incredibly charming Axel was.

Currently putting up past reviews from my Blog on GR because I forgot at the time oops 😅

This started out as an average story in the paranormal romance genre. The writing was good but the pacing was on the slow side. This was definitely more of a slow-burn romance. That wasn't a problem though.

My problem was with the heroine towards the end. In the beginning, she came off as a smart and headstrong individual. I understood her need to not be in a relationship and take things very slowly. It was all within reason. That being said, the way she runs away from their secret (after it finally being revealed) made me dislike her so much. She did this all the while knowing her ex was out hunting her down and she knew very well what he was capable of. If she had dug her grave I was happy to let her lie in it if it were up to me in the last few chapters.

Axel was so understanding, caring, and patient with her. It came off a tad bit unrealistic in some points in the story. This guy didn't push for anything and initially truly wanted to get to know her as a person. It was sweet and endearing and he deserved better with what she did to him in the last few chapters.

Things all work out in the end and they have a happily ever after. I still wanted her to not exist so I was not as excited about this as the characters were. Overall this was a good story but the heroine made it shine a little less for me. I don't think I'll be reading any future books in this series.

I had a bit of a hard time figuring out a grade for this one. It’s better than a 3 but I’m not sure it’s a full 4. Oh well, I enjoyed it so 4 it is.

This is a continuation of the first book with Axel, the oldest son in this dragon shifter romance and Charlotte, the best friend of the previous book as our hero/heroine. Charlotte has been badly beaten by her boyfriend and once he leaves for work, she high tails it to Bear Claw to see her best friend Ava. When Axel sees Charlotte, he immediately recognizes her as his mate. He’s ecstatic but also realizes first Charlotte is pretty damaged and will need a lot of healing time and second, how does he tell her he’s a dragon shifter?

There’s not a whole lot more to explain as he patiently navigates his way through this delicate situation. He’s a wonderful beta type hero and so good with Charlotte, it’s impossible not to love him. Of course we see Ava and Maverick and the rest of the family. I appreciate how the author deals with issues between Maverick, the second brother who is also the alpha of the dragon clan and Axel who is the oldest but a beta. I’m glad that she does this.

I think you pretty much have to read the first book but they are conveniently available in as a single book, all six books in one and available on Kindle for free on KU or selling for only $9.99, a great deal for 6 books.

I enjoyed this one and I’m looking forward to the next in the series.

It was a good book.

I don't understand how Charlotte can be a nurse, go to work, come home and not bathe? And I don't understand how Axel is a cop and comes home without bathing? This was a standout thing to me.

This one was another so-so entry for this series. It was "fine". Not awful, not great. Just fine. As with the first book, I never really felt that burning "I've got to have you" desire from either the H or h so it made for a rather lackluster and safe kind of romance.

All in all, I don't know if I'm going to keep going with this series, even though I got the box set from Kindle Unlimited. These stories just aren't grabbing me. Everything is too "safe." Everyone is just so nice and reasonable and swell. They lack passion and vice and all the things that make romance novels exciting. This is just...boring.

Her Dragon Protector, by Roxie Ray, starts with a bang, with the female protagonist, Charlotte, fleeing from her abusive boyfriend, Logan, to Black Claw, Colorado where her best and only friend, Ava, lives. Immediately upon arrival, Charlotte nearly collapsed when she got out of the car from the wounds inflicted by her now ex-boyfriend. The male protagonist is Axel, a dragon shifter. He and his dragon, Asher, realized immediately upon smelling her scent that she was their mate and caught her before she could fall to the ground. Asher was beside himself that they had found their mate and was ready for Axel to claim her immediately. Asher was also ready to kill the man who had injured her and it took all of Axel's willpower to calm his inner dragon so they could help Charlotte. Her wounds were so severe that she was taken her to the hospital, where she was admitted for treatment. Unknown to Charlotte, most of people she meets in Black Claw are dragon shifters, a fact that must be held secret from Charlotte until Axel is sure that she will stay

This is a very well written book, with plenty of intrigue, suspense, disbelief and, of course, romance. The romance develops slowly, especially since Charlotte was chiding herself over the fact that she was attracted to Axel so soon after exiting a bad relationship. It's up to Axel to convince Charlotte that just because she was his fated mate, it didn’t mean that she had to automatically accept him and he was willing to work to get to know her and let her get to know him.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good romance and who likes shifter novels, especially dragon shifters.

Another Kingston brother finds his fated mate.
A good story, great characters.
Axel is the eldest of the brothers. But not the alpha of the clan. That falls to the middle brother, Maverick. This causes some serious sibling rivalry between the brothers. Axel’s jealousy goes into overdrive when Mav finds his mate. Just one more thing he doesn’t have. Then Charlotte shows up, bruised, broken and on the run from her ex. One look, one smell, and his dragon recognizes his mate. But with her past, Axel knows he’s going to have to take it very slowly with Charlotte. The last thing he wants is to scare her into running from him.
Charlotte has no luck with men. Not one of them is a decent man, let alone a human being. Lying, cheating, and this last one is abusive. Badly injured she bides her time until she can escape. Her family would be no help. So she goes to her best friend Ava, in Black Claw Colorado. Knowing that eventually her ex will track her down, she hides out. While she heals, she’s curious why Mavericks brother is constantly hanging around. His very nice, helpful, sexy brother. But the last thing she needs is to fall into another relationship so quickly. So she does her best to push him away.
I really liked the story. There were a few typos but overall well written. It had a good flow, and held my attention.
I only had one issue that just bugged me. It has nothing to do with my review, just a research issue. In the state of Colorado you cannot buy a bottle of wine in a gas station (book one), or in the grocery store (this book). Only in a liquor store. Just a tiny thing.
There was a small amount of drama, lots of push and pull on Charlottes part towards Axel.
Dual points of view.
No cheating between the main characters.
No cliffhanger.
HEA.

This book was slightly complicated. The opening scene is from the last stop which is the end scene where Charlotte basically comes barreling up the driveway to the manner. She gets out of the car battery bruised it could barely stand. She collapses literally in Ava’s arms and almost knocks her over. Axle who automatically senses this is his fated mate is right there to catch her. Holy mess after this begins. Charlotte has bruises, she has been traumatized because Logan who she moved in with did that creepy thing. For Logan loves and loves and the next thing you know Charlotte’s isolated. She’s never met the family. And all of a sudden he starts getting possessive and aggressive. Charlotte being a nurse and all you would think that she would stop the madness. But once he basically beat her into a concussion and she basically runs for life is worth things get extremely emotional. Axel and Asher his dragon have to wait for her. And axle hast to make sure that Asher does not overstep his bounds as a dragon but was patiently. This is a very touching book. This book can cause triggers for those who are not used to or who have been traumatized or abused. But he has yet to resent reveal his secret to her and he is worried about acceptance. He want to take her time and make sure that everything‘s OK. He is a man and a dragon who wants to protect her at all costs. But what happens when Logan is released from jail? No cliffhanger for this couple. But Stefon looks like he’s going to be next for a mate.

This author and series continues to impress me! The story primarily picks up where we left off with book one, with an appreciated glimpse back to fill in the details as to why Charlotte found her way to the Kingston’s home. Axel recognizes his fated mate immediately, but realizes that Charlotte has been through a traumatic experience and learning about dragon shifters and fated mates may just be too much for her, allowing her the space she needs. Charlotte on the other hand, very much attracted to Axel, knows that a new relationship is not what she needs after the raw hand she’d been dealt. What I love about this author’s storytelling is that the romance isn’t rushed. She blends real life situations into a fantasy world, and the characters are extremely down-to-earth making it feel all that more genuine, even if we are talking about dragons! Axel was every bit the protector of Charlotte, but he was also so thoughtful and sweet… handling her physically and emotionally with the upmost care and respect. Charlotte had a very flirty and feminine personality, and even though she was the damsel in distress, she reciprocated the hospitality of her friends and regained her courage and footing quite quickly when it came to meeting Asher. Her reaction was quite comical!

Listened on audio: This was my first listen by narrator, Melanie Hastings. I really enjoyed her male voices, but it took a few chapters for her female voices to grow on me, especially Charlotte’s. The performance was very well done though, and I could distinguish between characters which is always a plus with dialogue.

SADLY...In book 1 "Her Daddy Dragon" .... Axel was the oldest until it was said in this book that his brothers were older... Maverick was definitely 18 years older than Jury the youngest who was just graduating. So surprise .... this book proclaims Axel is firstborn.
Also the first book AVA and Charlotte got pedi\manis in town ... SO in this book Charlotte should not have had to ask if there was a nail salon in town.
The books have discrepancies ... however they don't necessarily take away from the stories...

Charlotte and Axel. CW: assault on page, skip the prologue if you need to.

Charlotte is assaulted by her boyfriend Logan and escapes him, going to her friend Ava. She arrives in the middle of a family party, and as she collapses Axel, and his dragon Asher, recognize her as their fated mate.

Charlotte goes on a road to recovery and Axel is super patient and kind to her, knowing he has to wait for her to be ready for more than friends. Her ex is lurking in the background and she’s scared of him.

But I don’t really understand the human reaction to doubt a fated mate. Instead of believing fate picked the perfect companion, they think fate is forcing feelings that wouldn’t exist anyway. It’s frustrating to read but the reader has been in Axels head half the book and we know how he feels and he’s shown her. I understand her freak out over him being a dragon but not that he kept it a secret. She’d known him a few months.

I think all these books are a 3.5 ⭐️ for me. I can’t argue I’m enjoying binging the series but they feel comfortingly formulaic- which is fine if that’s what you’re looking for.

Trigger warning!

Her Dragon Protector Black Claw Dragons: Book 2
By Roxie Ray
Kindle unlimited purchase
Before I get to the review I have to warn you about the trigger that takes place in the prologue. Charlotte's live in boyfriend attacks her after she fixes a meal in celebration of their 6 months aniverary. She leaves and goes to Black Claw, Colorado and her best friend Ava. So if need be skip the prologue.
Axel and his dragon Asher were on the same page the person that hurt Charlotte had to burn. Being the oldest brother and a beta has done a number on Axel. But he is learning to deal with the fact that his younger brother is the alpha of his clan.

A decent 3 ½ stars

I'm still enjoying this series, and Book Two was a decent read with mostly loveable characters, but this story isn't nearly as good as the first. Charlotte and Axel are rather childish; Charlotte's feelings and responses are valid throughout most of the story given her history, but the big reveal brings too much stupidity to her character. Axel and his childish resentment throughout most of the story (he's a lifelong dragon, his own father isn't an alpha, but he can't figure out birth order is irrelevant?) are irritating; the same event that makes Charlotte less likeable actually improves Axel for me. Despite these disappointments I have every intention of enjoying Book Three in this series!

I normally really enjoy this writer but childish writing.

I was really disappointed with this as I’ve read other books by her and they’ve been brilliant. It just felt weird in places. In the middle of a sex scene she talks about v....al orgasms versus cl...ral orgasms and it just felt really weird! She’s had a really tough time with her ex boyfriend when he beat her up so when she meets Axa she spends the whole book telling herself he’s too good to be true! And why does the dragon have a different name to the human? It was really confusing at first. He’s Axa, his dragon is Asher and her friend is Ava! Too confusing!

The writing and editing of this novel was pretty clean, with few if any typos that I noticed in the ARC version of this manuscript. I will admit that I enjoy this author's sci-fi romances more than her paranormal romances so far. The world building is minimal, as this novel is set in contemporary Colorado. It was fun to read a novel set in my home state! The characterization was a little flat, but both the hero and especially the heroine were sympathetic individuals. The development of the romantic relationship was natural and organic, as there wasn't a whole lot happening plot wise until about 70% through this novel. The plot and pacing was a little uneven in this novel, with the middle of the novel having a slower pace and little external plot, and a ton of plot and fast pacing happening near the last 30% of the novel. This novel had a fair amount of angst on the heroine's part which was perfectly understandable after her repeated relationship trauma, but made her a little bit an unsympathetic character because it came across more as xenophobia. The stakes were really high in the last 30% of this novel. This novel uses the Fated Mates trope and the paranormal version of the Mars Needs Women trope, since the dragon shifters are all born male and need human wives. I was a little unsure if the dragon shifters can only sire sons or if they can sire human daughters? That was not addressed clearly in this novel. The plot, pacing, and world building were three stars. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship were three stars. Therefore, the combined score of this novel was three stars. This novel ends on a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that is a big plus for this story. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy romance novels featuring dragon shifters or fans of this author's other works. I do not plan to buy myself a keeper copy of this novel.

Charlotte was fleeing an abusive relationship and she ran to her best friend Ava for comfort and help. The moment Charlotte arrived and Axel, and his dragon Asher, sensed her he knew he had found his fated mate. Axel and his family took care of Charlotte, giving her a place to live and heal and learn to be part of a loving family. Axel never pushed her, but wanted so badly to reveal what he was and more importantly what she was to him. When danger came calling again it Axel didn't let anyone stand in the way of him saving, and claiming, his mate.

This book was delightful! Action, humor, funny sarcastic barbs between the characters, danger and at the root of it all deep, deep love. Axel was my favorite character. Strong, tough, but so gentle and understanding, he was willing to go at Charlotte's pace, even though his dragon, Asher, was much more eager. I love books where you get to hear the shifter's voice too and Asher was a wonderful character.

Charlotte was a tough sassy woman. She had been through bad relationships, but she never let it truly hurt her, she was so strong, so willing to live life her way. Even when she found out what Axel really was, she was stunned, but she didn't completely fall apart or freak out, I loved that about her. In the end, she knew what her heart truly wanted.

The cast of characters were so entertaining. Maverick, Ava and Stefan were some of my favorites. The dynamic Axel had with Maverick needed some polishing, but they were brothers who loved each other deeply. The scene towards the end where Maverick and Axel are racing to get Charlotte back from her abusive ex, and their dragons talk, was one of my favorites. Ava is the best friend anyone wants, a rock to lean on no matter what you need. Stefan was a young dragon going through a rough patch who just desperately wanted a clan, a family of his own. Axel and his family helped a lot and Stefan was so brave and helpful in this book.

This was just such an enjoyable read, and I cannot wait to read more!

Her Dragon Protector is the second book in this series and is Axel and Charlotte’s book.

I genuinely loved Axel and thought he was a really great guy. From the moment he laid eyes on Charlotte he knew she was his fated mate. Because she’d been abused by her ex-boyfriend, Axel took things slow and put Charlotte first with each decision he made. He took his time and was careful not to push her or cause her to feel pressured at all.

I didn’t care for Charlotte. She had just left an abusive relationship so her constant fantasies about Axel were a little OTT and difficult to believe. When she learned the truth about their family being dragons, her reaction was not cool and she was rude and hurtful to all of them. Axel’s mom is not a dragon and she’d been so caring and gentle with her, however Charlotte ends up treating her badly too. Of course Axel being the sweet man he is thinks it’s his fault. He had already gone over and above giving her time before making it obvious he wanted a relationship with her. Then when she discovers their secret, he gave her time again to absorb who they were. Axel gave and gave but Charlotte just took from all of them without giving anything whatsoever back. Their secret is a major thing and not something to be shared easily. It was a no brainer that she should have realized that and not acted so dramatic and sullen. Especially since she learned that her BFF Ava’s husband Maverick (from the first book) is also a dragon. She’d been around them for a while and knew they wouldn’t hurt her.

Although they do get a happy ending, my impression of Charlotte did not chance.
