This was a thrill ride. I absolutely couldn't put it down! There were a number of type-os and some odd phrases; definitely could use better editing. However, when a story and a cast of characters grap you by the throat and don't let go until you've finished, I consider it a really good read.
The world is interesting; the MC can open portals between "worlds" or "dimensions" or something. She usually finds new homes for folks who can pay to escape their troubles or for emergency cases like battered women and children. But then things go sideways and she's in the middle of a multi-world conflict, whew.
There isn't any sex, except the occasional kiss and intimation of more. There is a gay couple and two guys with history. Still nothing explicit. There is LOTS of blood and gore. Again, this is just such a fun read - like getting a serving of fast-food fries - you're not going to slowly savor this read. Looking for more by this author, she seems quite prolific.
Interesting read. I wasn’t sure if I would like some of the premise of this story in the sense didn’t really understand in the blurb why she would help criminals if she was someone that was basically good. I mean what kind of reason would helping bad guys make sense? Well you’re going to have to read just like I did if you want to find out whether this question gets answered or not. I did like how the story started out that you were drawn in right away and then it just kept it up. Didn’t want to stop reading till I finished it. I would recommend this book and will look for more by this author. Was only a couple minor times was like okay, why don’t you understand this? Everything else was good. I did receive an ARC from Hidden Gems for an honest review.
Portalhopping Guardians of the Galaxy if bipoc Gomorra was the captain
Imagine Letitia Wright (but tiny) with superpowers & grey morality gathering a team of rogues as she portal-hops through lots of the alt universes - and there you have it.
Rekia lives on Earth and earns her living by relocating criminals off-world, but you gotta think - if she can open up portals, what else can she do? Coz she ain’t human When relocating yet another dude who stole billions from someone he shouldn’t have, she gets stowaways on her way back and when she tries to help them, their adventures begin.
What I liked: - the action - plenty of that; - well built many many many different worlds as per visuals (tho I know a social anthropologist friend of mine would have things to say about the lack of dialects in world building); - Loved the idea of a portal-hopper having many homes in the worlds she relocates people (and some off the grid ones as well); - Also loved that Rekia’s family knew she had an adventurous streak (read: loves to get into trouble) and were there to tell her off and bail her out regardless; - The banter; - How Rekia manages to accidentally assemble herself a team most of whom she punches the first time they meet; - The fade to black and minimal on romance.
What I didn’t enjoy: By 2/3rds in, I was getting rather tired of all the portal-hopping and fights and incarcerations - meaning: it could have ended sooner given the not so complicated plot. But maybe that’s just me and chonky books. I can definitely see this being made into a movie with a female version of Starlord heading up her ragtag team.
Diverse as featuring two MM relationships with a bit of exes/why choose tension built in.
The title and cover drew me in so I wanted to give it a go. I was not a massive fan of Nico, Toma or Rekia. Rekia decided to help them, took all the risks and the bargains, including breaking strangers out of jail, and I felt Toma and Nico did very little to prove their own innocence. Saylor did more than they did. Rekia started off well, but when she said she wasn't going to call her family again, then repeatedly did so throughout the book to help her, that bugged me. She kept saying they had families and lives and didn't want them involved yet continually involved them. She also kept taking more and more risks without question. She knew Nico and Toma were hiding things but did not push. Nico killed people in her home and not once did Rekia consider that Nico was guilty. She then broke random people out of prison to get the help of someone to help Nico and Toma. There was no consideration of what she was doing was wrong.
Saying this, I loved Rekia's powers. They are awesome! I liked that she didn't have an endless amount of power and had to fuel up regularly. Although her decision making bugged me, I did like that stood by her word and did what she could to help those she could. She didn't run even when the situation got worse. I liked that Rekia used her powers to help those that have been abused without charge. I did love Clink, Glome, Kirk and Chaz. They were brilliant characters. Chaz especially, his powers were really interesting. I loved them so much I downloaded Glome and Clinks book and Clink and Chazs book. This series has a lot of potential. I would happily continue and see how Rekia and her team grow.

This one started out really good, very interesting concept, different characters, strange worlds and abilities. Great, pulled me in but there was too much time spent in Rekia's mind, which is made worse by the fact that she's the only perspective we get. She decides to help two strangers because she was looking for a thrill, and within meeting them, not only is she taking on their cause and inviting them to her house, but she takes on their woes like they're her own. They meet Clink who forces them to his side using his power, and adds another. Then to go rescue his boyfriend and brother from jail. It was a bunch of instant responsibility, improbable circumstances, and eye rolling from me. It's too bad because the idea is great and with a bit more teeth to the rationale, could've been much better. The scenes skip too which I always find to be distracting. Walking into a field at outset then suddenly able to touch the wall of a bathroom with no transition in between.
First story I've read where different parallel worlds were used a lot in addition to an existence of some economic system between worlds, and war.
Has great beginning and middle, although the part where the fight is going on, it was rushed, the descriptions were more of a summary than a story.
Other than that, it is a stand alone book from the other series "World Breaker Beginnings". I'll wait for the next installment in the "World Breaker" series. I want to see these worlds, the secret of these one particular world where everyone is a traveller, the explanation on why people have powers in some worlds, and a lot of other things.
This is a universe with a lot of potential and I can't wait to see it grow.
If you enjoy people with special powers this is a great book. This story is full of action and is light enough on romance details that it is fine for a young adult just starting with romance. Rekia can hop from world to world and most of her clients ran running from the law or those they ripped off. She has a soft heart and takes care of those in need of help with few questions. After taking a primal to a world that she has only heard of she finds herself helping 2 people clear there names. She never thought things would get so out of hand or that it would turn into her having to hide or fight to stay alive.
A must read to find out why she ends up on the run herself and how she grits out of it.
How to describe this book in less than two pages? Um? I can’t. I will say that it has a really kick ass heroine, more adventures and magical characters than you can shake the proverbial stick at, too many different worlds (don’t worry there is no test at the end) and more and more. Despite all of these this book is really easy to read and keep track of things which is not always the case in fantasy in particular. I recommend this book highly and can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
Fantasy novel of adventure with superpowers. Engaging stuff.
I don’t recall when I downloaded this book but it was a while ago. It tells us about Rekia who can open portals to other worlds and who has a couple of other powers. She becomes entangled in a plot involving other important characters, Slo with powers Along the way, they collect other powered individuals and, in fact, “normal” people hardly feature at all. It’s quite engaging and imaginative although I’m amazed that Rekia survived the various encounters. Quite good and with LGBTQ themes.
Ok, you need more, I guess. Let’s just say that NR Hairston is a really great talent at creating worlds (multiple universes)that s reader just gets absorbed into. Add to that a really great action packed plot, a dimension-jumping kick-a** heroine (I adored Rakia, the star here) with a great supporting cast and wonderful writing (as is standard with this author). The result? As I said: utterly cool.
This story was really intersting and different. Rekia is a thief with somewhat of a moral compass if such a thing can exist. I loved all of the different worlds and species the reader was introduced to. I wish Rekia was a little more developed but other than that I thought pacing and world building of the story was on point. I look forward to more in this series and from this Author.
I checked this out in kindle unlimited It was fast paced - I liked the heroine and our little band of travelers visit some pretty unique world's Interesting story just lacked some of the details that would have ensnared me completely Lacked flow at times Felt like we jumped from scene to scene sometimes Would recommended overall as an entertaining read
I enjoyed this fantasy book. The storyline is well-written action-packed and magical. This promises to be a good series if this first book is any indication. The main character is strong, independent and fierce. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.
Super interesting premise. I tried twice to get into it but the main character is overpowered. She has so many big powers that it just didn’t feel realistic even for a fantasy. I might try again another time. Or if this is ever on audio.
This was a great story. The characters where fantastical and it was just as a fantasy book should be. Lots of action, powers and surprises. I would like to read the backstories of the other characters in this series.
