From the USA Today bestselling author of Five French Hens and The Old Girls' Network comes a story of the journey of a lifetime across Europe in pursuit of memories, love, and new adventures. It’s always a good time for a road trip…
When 82-year-old Lil decides to book herself, her 65-year-old daughter, Cassie, and her friend Maggie on a bus trip across Europe, she hopes for a little adventure to counteract the monotony of life.
Along with three members of the Salterley Tennis Club and the Jolly Weaver football team, whose ideas of a good time are rather different to Lil’s and strikingly at odds with each other’s, the merry band of travellers set out on their great adventure.
From moving moments on the beaches of Normandy, outrageous adventures in Amsterdam, to the beauty of Bruges and gastronomic delights of France, the holiday is just the tonic Lil, Maggie and Cassie needed.
And as the time approaches for them to head home, Lil makes an unexpected discovery - even in her advancing years, men are like buses – there isn’t one for ages then two come along at once. Is Lil ready to share her golden years, and can the ladies embrace the fresh starts that the trip has given them. Or is it just too late to change…
Judy Leigh has lived all over the UK from Liverpool to Cornwall, but currently resides in Somerset. After teaching theatre, writing lyrics for a punk band and setting up Shakespeare Festivals, she completed an MA in Professional Writing.
She is a prolific writer, but when she is not at her computer you will find her on the beach, walking, doing yoga or splashing in the sea. She is also a Reiki healer, a vegan and an animal lover. She has three black cats and she enjoys live music, theatre and football.
'For . . . everything. I've come on holiday; I'm enjoying myself, but - am I too old for all the other things? For a bit of love?'
'Of course not.' Cassie rolled over again; the bed springs creaked. 'None of us are too old, ever. There are some strange attitudes in the world about aging, as if we all suddenly become too far gone for the pleasures in life. I've seen many people over the years who were old at thirty-five, their lives dominated by poverty, misery and disease. And I know inspirational people older than I am - you're one of them - who don't let age hold them back.'
Lil sighed. 'Sometimes I think I'm still forty until I look in the mirror.'
'But you're full of life, Lil - and while you are alive, you can do anything your body will let you: travel, have new experiences, even love.'

MY THOUGHTS: There have been some excellent books published recently about seniors living their lives to the full, and I was hopeful that this was going to be another. But, unfortunately, I found it a little too cheesy, a little too twee.
The idea and the intent were great, and I enjoyed it more than not, but Lil's Bus Trip was a read that I never really engaged with. I wanted to feel something for the characters, but it never happened. I wanted an entertaining and uplifting read, but I am sorry this just didn't do it for me.
This was an average read, and I was quite content to close the cover at the end and move on.
I am well aware that I am very much on my own with my feelings on Lil's Bus Trip, and that it may well be a book that you enjoy, so please check out a selection of the very many positive reviews.

Lil’s Bus Trip by Judy Leigh is a delightful adventure with a cast of quirky and interesting characters. This book will take you on a laugh-out-loud journey through Europe, with a few characters who will soon become your friends.
Lil aged 82 and her daughter Cassie, age 65 decide to go on a minibus tour of Northern Europe with their friends from the local five aside football team, and three members of the tennis club. This band of merry holidaymakers bonds together as they visit the sights in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
Lil’s Bus Trip is just so much fun. You’ll never get bored of the antics of this group of friends as they make their way through Europe. There are a group of 20 somethings from the football team, and some middle-agers from the pub and tennis club, and a couple from the older generation too. They all get up to some humorous shenanigans as they travel together.
This multi-generational book is not just a travel diary of these characters’ adventures, but it examines the personal discoveries as these characters grow and learn about themselves and each other. It’s not just another holiday they are on, but a journey of discovery and adventure and it pulls the reader along for the experience.
I highly recommend this book for anyone, of any age, for a fun-filled adventure. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Denise wrinkled her nose. ‘This is hardly a booze cruise, Cassie. I think it’s a mistake to imply that it is. While we’re enjoying the cultural richness of each place we visit, our interest in the alcohol is purely intellectual.’ She held up her beer, then took a deep draught. Her glass was almost empty.
Lil caught her breath. ‘Maggie, we’re in the middle of the red-light area.’ Maggie stopped and stared at her friend. ‘Oh, no – should we go back?’ ‘Why ever would we do that?’ ‘Someone might proposition us.’ Maggie was aghast with fear. Lil laughed. ‘I’m eighty-two and you’re only a few years younger, Maggie. We’d have more chance of being propositioned if we paid the clients.’
‘Fifty euros for fifteen minutes?’ Maggie marvelled. ‘And I’ve done it for nothing all my married life.’
Lil pressed her lips together, trying not to burst out laughing. It was most entertaining, the way others’ secret lives and liaisons were unfolding on this trip. Lil was enjoying it almost as much as her romance novels.
My Review:
What fun! Every time I pick up a book by this clever wordsmith I find a new favorite octogenarian. I want to be just like her Lil when I grow up, she is eighty-two years young and proudly and unapologetically reads “bonking books,” performs random acts of kindness, is up for all types of shenanigans, and flirts outrageously every morning with the much younger tattooed man who owns her favorite breakfast eatery.
The writing was well-honed and shrewdly paced with original and engaging storylines that were relatable and entertaining while packed with wry smirk-worthy humor. The book featured an interesting cast of oddly beguiling characters of various ages and walks of life from common to snooty, while traveling together on a coach tour of Europe.
I adore and revere this author’s skills as she covers all the feels with smart observations and keen perceptions while keeping a smile on my face during the vast majority of my perusal. Plus, she had me Googling a giggle-snort-worthy exchange between the elderly ladies involving a “posing pouch.”
5☆ A Thoroughly Entertaining and Loveable Adventure. A Must Read!
I'm a huge fan of books that feature the older generation characters and Judy Leigh's books are always guaranteed to warm your heart with loveable characters, Fun and Entertaining Adventure and plenty of Laughs along the way... and Lil's Bus Trip ticked every single box!
I'm not going to delve into the story as I feel that's best left for you to discover for your self. But what I will say is Lil stole my heart she was cheeky, Fun, loveable and i can only hope that I'm as adventurous with a zest for life as she is at 82 years young.
This book is Uplifting, Thoroughly Entertaining, Witty, with an abundance of loveable characters, Plenty of Humour, a lil bit of mischief and a sprinkle of romance (after all your never too old to fall in love or have a cheeky flirt), and some beautiful countries to explore along the way, what more could you possibly ask for! I loved this sweet and funny book. It was refreshing and very up lifting. It tells the story of a group of older people who decide to take a trip on a bus and tour Europe. Their energy for excitement and trying different experiences at their age was not only funny but also made me realise how precious life is and how you must make the most of every day and do as much as you can while you can. This was such a different read that it left me wanting more from this author. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
It's been ages since I last read the a book in pretty much one sitting, and over the course of the evening I've done exactly that with this book. I just didn't want to miss one moment of this bus trip.
A coach trip isn't my first choice of holiday, ok it's pretty low down the options for me, but that didn't stop me thoroughly enjoying every second of Lil's trip.
And adoring every one of this motley crew of people that have come together on this trip. Even when you wouldn't think they would all get on, it's quite lovely to see how they can all come together when needed.
And the antics Lil, her best friend Maggie, daughter Cass can get up to on a trip to France, Belgium and The Netherlands are just fabulous. Keep your eyes out for a "coffee shop", a wander around the red light district, all manner of romances throughout the bus and potential locals, and even just trying to get out of the first car park had me laughing my head off!! And that is just part of it.
I loved the descriptions of the various places on the trip, and felt as though I was there alongside Lil and friends.
And I also love how once more Judy Leigh is writing about characters who still have a full lust for life, and showing how you can grow old disgracefully and have a lot of fun doing so!
It's simply another fabulous book from this author that had me smiling, laughing and generally feeling really good while reading it.
Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Yay! A new book by Judy Leigh! And if you are a fan of the author as I am, you won’t be surprised to learn that, “Lil’s Bus Trip” is the perfect comfort read! Definitely a porch read, with your favorite beverage and…Belgian chocolates?
The book blurb tells you all about it, but again, you will be happy to know that this book contains all the good feels. There are a mini-bus load of characters, but the author presents them so vividly, that you will remember each one. You will love 82-year old Lil , who is at the heart of it- funny, caring, perky, and she doesn’t let past sadness get her down. Her daughter Cassie is just like her, a warm and talented lady. Both mother and daughter are so close and caring- they share plenty of happiness, and hope. Lil’s friend Maggie can use some of Lil’s spunk.
The rest of the gang will entertain you as well- the young, middle-aged and a few more golden-agers. They each have their hopes and dreams, too. A few shenanigans, many funny moments, and times of thoughtful reflection round out this rollicking story. These characters aren’t as quirky as the some of the ones in Ms. Leigh’s previous books, and I liked them better. As the bus jostles through France, Belgium and Holland, you will be so happy you are part of the trip, enjoying the food and sights!
Thanks to Net Galley and Boldwood Books for an advance digital review copy. This is my honest review.
There are so many reasons why I love Judy Leigh’s books – she creates the most wonderful characters (with a particularly special touch with those of more advanced years), wonderfully drawn situations and settings, a bit of travel and adventure (so much needed when we can’t do it for ourselves), always a little romance, and that perfect and elusive balance between plenty of laughs and moments of real poignancy that capture your heart.
The undoubted star of this book is Lil herself – 82 and living in a sheltered housing complex, full of life and mischief, not beyond flirting with the owner of the local cafe, looking for a little excitement, despairing a little at the closed-in life of her friend Maggie who’s entirely at the beck and call of her tv-watching husband. Lil lives alone, but 65 year old daughter Cassie isn’t far away, they have a lovely relationship, and she provides the practical and emotional support she needs – she’s a poet who regularly performs, with her banjo, in the local pubs and farther afield, happily sharing her home with supportive best friend Jamie.
When Lil hears about the minibus tour of Northern Europe being organised by The Jolly Weaver, she signs up all three of them for the trip – and they’re joined by the pub’s owner and his elderly father, some young friends from the pub’s five-a-side football team, and three slightly stuffy members of the local tennis club (in search of culture and gastronomic delights, rather than high jinks – but then again…) as they embark on their adventure. As they explore the delights of France, Belgium and the Netherlands, we get to know them all considerably better – every single one of them superbly drawn, with interesting back stories and developing storylines – as they grow closer and enjoy their time together.
This book really felt like taking a holiday with a group of friends – some of them take a little longer to warm to, some really surprise you – and I enjoyed every single moment, as they explore the sights, bond as a group, and discover things about themselves and others that give real depth to the story. The book is immense fun from beginning to end – some of the set pieces really are laugh-out-loud (particularly as they discover the more dubious delights of Amsterdam) – but with a strong focus on family and friendship, there are many times when it’s also deeply touching. There’s more than a touch of romance too, at both ends of the age spectrum – beautifully done, and a real endorsement that it really is never too late to find happiness where you least expect it.
It really is a quite wonderful ensemble piece – with a mixed bag of individuals where every reader will find someone to identify with and take to their heart, and so many moments to be enjoyed, filled with warmth, as they all embrace their big adventure. I absolutely loved it – very highly recommended to all.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my digital copy in exchange for an honest review. I requested this one because I loved the title and I loved the cover. I didn't read much about the book so I didn't really know the premise behind the story but I really enjoyed it. I loved the storyline, I loved the characters, I loved the setting...I especially loved Lil...and that the main characters were older people in need of some adventure...this was just a feel good book all the way around for me. :)
Sprightly eight two year old Lil is off on an adventure. She is going with a group of locals to northern Europe. She has roped in her daughter Cassie and good friend Maggie who very much needs to get away from her husband Brian who just sits in front of the TV letting her do everything. She almost bottled out thinking he couldn't manage without her. Lil is a character and couldn't let her friend not come. Many many years ago, Lil’s love was Cassie's father who then had to return home to the states following the war. Lil was left wondering what happened to him and hasn't really had a man in her life ever since. The group set out and visit war memorials, cemeteries along with cider makers and everything else along the way. I love Judy’s novels- there is a depth of message amongst so much going on and many smiles. From ghosts and flirting to storytelling, there is the warmth of a group who although very different have some common bonds. Of life and loves, ups and downs and the gamut of emotions we all go through. A wonderful, inspirational read.
I got this book as a widget from the publisher Boldwood Books and I didn't exactly know what to expect from it. It has been my first one by Judy Leigh, but definitely not my last. Such a funny, delightful read! A bunch of very different people, of different ages and different background go on a bus tour around Europe. I loved the easy writing (such a pleasure to read), the skillfully drawn characters (each with their own traits and peculiarities) that seemed very real and true to life and the humourous (yet touching) undertone of the story. Highly entertaining!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review.
82 year old Lil and her 62 year old daughter, Cassie along with several town members take a bus trip across Europe. Lil hopes to convince herself she isn't too old to enjoy life. This is a fun read with lots of humor. The tour group visits some major cities and meet lots of locals. Makes a bus trip sound like fun. This is the first book by Judy Leigh that I've read and has me looking at her other titles. I enjoy an uplifting and fun read. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Absolutely loved lils bus trip! Judy Leigh totally champions the older generation in all their varied glory! Age is just a number and there is so much fun to be had whatever age you are! A bus trip through europe, a mixed crew of local people each with a different reason to go away on a little trip and a wide age range! Entertaining, funny and downright hilarious at times ,as the group travel around France Belgium and Holland sightseeing, dining, drinking, experiencing new things, and making great friendships along the way! Quirky lovable characters particularly elderly lil and her daughter Cassie, lots of deep meaningful reflection, happiness and love tempered with Belgium chocolate, hash cookies, strip poker and alcohol, living life to the full! Brilliantly heartwarming, perfect escapism , totally enjoyable! Thank you netgalley for this early read.
A sweet story about a group of neighbors and friends who go on a bus tour from the UK to Europe. We mostly follow mom and daughter Lil and Cassie, who in their 80s and 60s, find themselves changed by the trip.
Full disclosure- I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review
This is the perfect summer read! Lil, and 82-year-old woman, embarks in a road trip with her daughter, a friend, and ten other people. In the trip they encounter love, lust, laughs, and most of all, good and lasting friendships.
I loved all of the characters, even if there were 13 people on the road trip, each of them was so well written and detailed that it was as if I was on the road trip with them. The mix of very different people worked perfectly in this book. My favorite character is Cassie, although I grew to love all of them.
** Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion. **
Yet again Judy Leigh has written an uplifting tale that will whisk you away. And Lils Bus Trip does genuinely whisk you away on an European Tour courtesy of Toby Juggs.
The cast of characters in Lil’s Bus Trip are truly heartwarming and like a close knit family. At the centre of them is Lil our main character. At 82 you'd think she would be ready to just relax and knit. But that ain't Lil she isn't the stereotypical old woman.
At 65 we have Cassie, Lil’s daughter. I absolutely loved their relationship, Lil had Cassie at a young age so in a way their relationship is more of sisters than the maternal one. And half the time given their va va voom for life I kept forgetting that both of them were ladies of a certain age 🙈🤣 the beauty in Leighs writing that I get whisked away on their adventures and age is blinded by me. Brilliant.
Lil’s Bus Trip is a wonderful tale of grabbing life with both hands and embracing what's in front of you. No matter what your age.
Many thanks to Boldwood and Netgalley for my gifted digital copy. And to Rachel for my spot on the blog tour.
Imagine a disparate group of people, all ages, all different walks of life. Some are long time friends, some parent-adult children, some mates who play sports together. Somehow this group of people from a small town in the UK go on a bus trip around Europe together and come out as family in the end.
I really enjoyed this book, and think that there are a lot of themes that would make this a great book club choice. Oil’s relationship with her daughter, and the path they’ve both taken in personal relationships due to the past. Do they both manage to overcome their worries and open their hearts? What about Maggie, will Brian notice she’s gone? Has Pat found his ever after? What about Ken, Denise and Sue, will they figure out what’s happening?
This was a well-written, thoughtful book about life, love and being open to new adventures, regardless of your age.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
Lil's Bus Trip is sure to put a smile on your face. Li'l is the most energetic, full of life and fun 82 year old character that I have ever come across in a book or real life and I hope to be just like her when I get older! Forget the rules about how you should behave based on your age. Age is just a number and getting older is no excuse to stop having adventures, having fun and enjoying life to the fullest.
Lil and her daughter have a really special relationship which is really touching and they really look out for each other and always have. On the bus trip, which takes us through France, Belgium and to Amsterdam we see how Lil interacts with others and help this groupd of practical strangers become friends and care for each other. Lil is definitely the strongest and funniest character in this book, but the other characters all add to the story and the fun.
The places visited were not that spectacular for me as I have been to all of them and I find it funny how it is mentioned, France, Belgium and Amsterdam (just like I mentioned above), I guess it wasn't France, Belgium and The Netherlands as the trip only took them to one city in The Netherlands. Nevertheless, all places were discussed in an interesting way that would make the reader want to visit them and experience them, if they had not done so already.
So what can you expect in this story: ✅ old people that are full of life and sometimes mischief
✅ people of various ages bonding
✅ adventure, including some laugh out loud moments
✅stereotype adventures in some of the places visited
✅ friendships
✅ romance
✅ second chances
I really enjoyed Judy's writing style and will not hesitate to read more of her books.
I would like to thank Judy Leigh, Boldwood Books and NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a special book. It coincided with my travel plans... country wise, at least, France, Belgium (we both climbed the Belfry Tower!), and Amsterdam, Netherlands. Lil is an outgoing 82 year old who protects and takes care of her friends and daughter. The trip was fun and a little crazy. This is the first book I have officially finished by Judy Leigh who writes "never too late" novels.
Absolutely brilliant, I loved this book. A group of 13 people go on a trip to Europe and we are with them on their adventures. Each character is written brilliantly and we get to know each one of them as we journey with them. They are all various ages with Lil being 82. I laughed out loud in several places and was sorry when the book ended. My first book by Judy Leigh but now looking forward to reading her others. Absolutely recommended.
Another fun novel by Judy Leigh who never fails to deliver!
Setting out on a bus trip across Europe, every one of the passengers is seeking something different; 82 year old Lil is looking for adventure, accompanied by her daughter Cassie and neighbour Maggie, hoping that the latter’s absence will give husband Brian a much needed wake up call. Along with members of the local tennis club, football team and the local landlord they set off on their unforgettable journey.
What an absolutely fabulous read! This author has the knack of creating a wide range of characters, each with their own personalities and idiosyncrasies, and bringing them to life. There is laughter and angst along the way but, more than anything else, there is wonderful entertainment. I look forward to each of Judy’s books as I know they will raise my spirits and make me giggle while also having a realistic side too. A marvellous read, thoroughly enjoyed and definitely recommended. 4.5*.
This is the first book I've ready by author Judy Leigh and I'm delighted to say I've found a new author to go on my favourites list. The list is growing :)
Lil's Bus Trip is such a wonderful romp of a read that at times is daft, funny and entertaining and at other times it moves on to serious issues that are thought provoking. However, with the way the author has created her characters the poignant moments are soon lifted. There is a definite heart-warming feeling running throughout the storyline.
Lil is in her early 80's living in a retirement complex. Lil is full of mischief as she banters with the local cafe owner and has a heart of gold with her random acts of kindness. Lil fell in love very young but this was a short lived romance leaving her heartbroken and many, many years of what-ifs. It also left her with her most precious possession, her daughter Cassie.
Cassie is a poet and has performed and worked all over the world but is happy now settled close to her mum house sharing with her best friend Jamie.
When Lil hears of a trip around Europe a plan starts to spring into action and a little while later Lil with her downtrodden neighbour, Maggie, along with Cassie join a merry band of travellers all excited and a little anxious for the holiday.
What I loved about this merry band of travellers was the diversity in ages and backgrounds. We had 3 octogenarians sharing a minibus with 3 young lads eager for nightlife and football, 3 middle aged travellers looking for culture and good food, local pub landlord on the search for good beer, two other females who are friendly and amiable and Tommy the driver who was an enterprising fellow. With an eventful start to the journey the bus of mismatch travellers was off on an adventure they wouldn't forget!
I really enjoyed seeing the towns and cities across Europe through the eyes of the characters. Judy Leigh not only took her characters on a trip she also took her readers along with her.
Lil's Bus Trip is fun, whacky, entertaining, poignant and very readable ... I loved it!
I love the author’s writing style. She has a gift of creating characters that become so much more than people on the pages of a book. These characters become real people to me and I honestly adore them. I especially enjoy Ms. Leigh’s books since she includes characters of the older population.
Lil is 82 and has a young, adventurist spirit that is so endearing. Her daughter Cassie is a beautiful person inside and out. Their mother/daughter relationship is such a tight bond and joy to read about.
The story had me interested from the very beginning and kept me involved until it ended. I felt like I was on the same journey as Ms. Leigh’s characters. Her description of the settings transported me to the bus, hotels, and every scenic location they stopped at.
The story was humorous, emotional, and thought provoking. It has themes of friendship, life-evaluation, regret, second chances and hope.
I was engrossed in this wonderful book, getting to know these characters as I took the journey with them and now that I am finished reading the book, I am somewhat heartbroken that it is now over.
Interwoven in the story are poems and song lyrics that Cassie writes and performs. They are pretty amazing. I never knew that Judy Leigh was such a gifted poet and lyricist. It was interesting to read about the process of creating written art.
I enjoyed reading this book so much! I highly recommend it!
I want to thank NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the pleasure of reading the advanced reader copy. My review is my own opinion not influenced by receiving the ARC.
What a wonderful heartwarming book, and so lovely to have a book full of older characters living their best life! The story is both uplifting and a little sad at times, taking us on a bus trip through France, Belgium and the Netherlands whilst meeting the locals, friendships being formed and lovers being taken. A joyful book that shows that life might just begin at 60…….
After Heading over the Hill, and Chasing the Sun, I was really looking forward to another Judy Leigh book. In her latest book, 82-year-old Lil, her 65-year-old daughter, Cassie, and her friend Maggie are in for an adventure when she books them on a bus trip across Europe. They aren't alone and have members of a tennis and football club on board.
I thought "Oh, this sounds fun" and what fun it was. I loved this journey and book at a time when travel is still not easy around the world. This helped me forget about that and focus on their journey.
I liked Lil, Cassie and Maggie and thought how spontaneous Lil was. How her decision to have fun came into being. The locations they visit are varied and I felt as if I were there with them. By now, I know that Judy Leigh is si skilled at showing human interaction and making a setting visual.
I have been to Normandy and Bruges. It was good to revisit them and get to know other places. Perfect uplifting escapism with lots of laugh-out-loud moments for the summer or any other time of year. The book has come at the perfect time for me.
Thanks to Judy Leigh, Boldwood Books and Rachel's Random Resources for my ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.
My 2-star review reflects my (lack of) enjoyment in this book. In my opinion, it’s a schmaltzy Hallmark Movie book. Endearing, sometimes scandalizing old people? Check! Possible tragedy? Check! Sexual antics? Check! Enriching foreign experiences? Check! Transformation? Check! (But it’s TransformationLight; true transformation is seldom so painless.) I think maybe Judy Leigh isn’t for me. That said, I thought the writing, the actual prose, was strong. And I was delighted by hearing “torpor.” And it was used correctly. I did not care for Julie Mullin’s narration. Several of her characters’ voices were downright unpleasant, and I found the singing and Dutch accent painful. In her defense, there were lots of important characters to voice, and I can find no fault with her delivery/affect/etc.
Lil’s Bus Trip is actually my first novel by Judy Leigh, even though her novels have been on my radar for a while. After reading this novel, I cannot wait to read her other works! The cover added to my anticipation to read the novel as there is just a sense of fun with the vibrant colors and the holiday back-drop. The novel even opens with the trip description, which I saved to add to my future travels. I have been lucky enough to travel to many of the destinations, but I still have many more to go. Although 82 year old Lil is in the title and one of the “official” main characters, the novel is full of a wonderful ensemble cast of all ages and personalities. While there is an overall light-hearted feel to the novel, it is balanced with a lot of heart and exploration into different obstacles that each character faces.
Lil is looking for a little excitement in her life after seeing the closed off life her friend Maggie leads where her life became about serving her husband. She hears about The Jolly Weaver’s bus tour while at the local pub and decides to sign up herself, Maggie, and her 65-years-old daughter, Cassie. They are joined by others from the pub, such as the owner and his father, along with members of the community. Together the tour takes the reader and characters through countries, such as France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The pacing of the story, for me, was a little slow at first, but that was mostly due to an impatience of wanting to start the trip rather than the writing itself. In a time where I am anxious to travel, I wanted to skip ahead to the trip portion of the novel; however, when I actually took the time to read through the initial set-up it gave an excellent context for some of the characters. It was written well and was enjoyable, so the outline of the story worked well.
The characters along for the ride on the tour are all likeable in their own way. Some readers may love them all right away and others, like me, take some time to warm up to a few of them. The author created an excellent group as it felt very relatable to tours that a person would take in reality. While I have not done large scale tours, like Lil’s, I have done a few mini ones in places like Vietnam. My friend and I went on 5-day tour while there and our group was full of older and younger people, some couples, some traveling alone, and others with friends. It is the joys of being on a tour together as it brings together who may not have met in other circumstances. The novel does an excellent job of portraying this as the characters on the tour getting to know each other more as time moves forward. I also love that the characters were younger and older, but they all had a good time together as travel can be enjoyed by people of any age.
Overall, this is an excellent story about living life to the fullest. Each character, young and old, is on an amazing trip where there is unexpected moments of fun at every turn. I enjoyed that the writing did not limit the character growth just to the main characters and even the secondary ones went through their own journeys. Along with individual journeys, there is a lot of development in the friendships, both old and new, that form as well as some romantic subplots. All the different characters’ stories weave together well with Lil’s and Cassie’s at the center. The writing balances them well, so the reader does not become overwhelmed by the multiple plots and subplots. The story was an entertaining ride that brings together a wonderful cast of characters in some lovely travel destinations that makes me want to hurry up and travel again! [4.5 rounded to 5]

I have been a fan of Judy’s work for a little while now. I have read everything that she has written to date and each time I finish her current book, I (im)patiently wait for her next book. I read the synopsis for ‘Lil’s Bus Trip’ and it certainly sounded like the sort of book I have to associate with Judy – a light hearted and fun read about love, life and friendships. Well ‘Lil’s Bus Trip’ was one hell of a read and then some, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading but more about that in a bit. I absolutely ADORED the character of Lil and in fact I like her so much I want to adopt her as my Granny! Lil is a woman in her eighties, who may be old in body (although she probably wouldn’t agree) but she isn’t in spirit. She certainly doesn’t let anybody or anything hold her back. She is mother to a 65 year old woman called Cassie and Lil is a very good friend to her neighbour Maggie. Lil also likes to flirt with men and swapping banter with anybody she meets. An overseas trip is organised by a local pub and Lil thinks that this is just what she, Cassie and Maggie need, so she reserves places for all three of them. Lil is certainly a determined woman and she won’t take no for an answer. What follows is a tale full of fun, frolics, laughter and friendship. It didn’t take me long at all to get into ‘Lil’s Bus Trip’. The fact that I saw Judy’s name on the cover of a book that I hadn’t read, was enough to grab my attention, the synopsis drew me in and the story within the covers of the book sealed the deal as it were. To say that reading ‘Lil’s Bus Trip’ became addictive is a massive understatement. My Kindle wasn’t exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn’t bear to miss a single second of the story and more about the shenanigans that the three ladies got up to. The pages turned increasingly quickly as I worked my way through the story. All too quickly I reached the end of the story and I had to say farewell to Lil and the other ladies. I found ‘Lil’s Bus Trip’ to be a delight to read. ‘Lil’s Bus Trip’ is superbly written but then I have found that to be true of all of Judy’s books to date. She has one of those easy going writing styles that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. In fact reading one of Judy’s books felt more like a chat between friends than reading an actual book. I hope that make sense. Judy has a knack of creating such lovable characters that it is impossible to dislike them. In fact, I began to feel as though they had become friends of mine. I felt as though I was part of the story and that’s thanks to Judy’s superbly realistic and vivid storytelling. ‘Lil’s Bus Trip’ was a hoot to read. I started chuckling away to myself at the start of the book and I didn’t stop chuckling until long after I read the very last word on the very last page. This book did more to cheer me up than any medication possibly could. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Lil’s Bus Trip’ and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Judy’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
