Author, Alex Shaw, certainly knows how to ramp up the tension, and he does this with aplomb, in Total Fallout, the follow up to the excellent Total Blackout.
Ex SAS trooper Jack Tate, is now an MI6 operative, currently working a black op, when Russian born Ruslan Akulov, who killed Tate’s parents, suddenly appears on the world scene, after not being heard of for some time. Akulov is acknowledged as the world’s most deadliest assassin, but that won’t deter Jack from avenging his family, and he’s not averse to crossing the line in his quest either, leading to some breathtaking action.
Akulov himself, is also on the hunt, for members of his old unit - The Werewolves, who hold the key to a weapon that could bring about the end of civilisation as we know it!
From Quatar to Monaco, London, to the US, this fast paced, gripping, and intelligent thriller, rarely pauses for breath, and this reader found that a bookmark was superfluous, such was the engaging nature of Shaw’s protagonist Jack Tate, on this most important personal mission. Tate has a clear, (if highly individual), moral code, that makes him particularly likeable, and I look forward to much more of the same! Highly recommended.
* I was invited to read Total Fallout by the publisher, and have given an honest unbiased review in exchange *

Jack Tate is back in this his 2nd outing in the series, now I would say although can be read as a stand alone it would be good to read book 1 first, the back story is mentioned and explained but if were me I would read them both So Jack carries on his fight for justice re the murder of his parents in Camden and thinks he has the right man, the man is aware he is being hunted but equally knows it wasn’t him....but how to make Jack believe that? As with Book 1 there is much adventure SAS style and lots of tense scenes and also some back history on the ‘Russians’ and their elite fighting squad You do have to check yourself from time to time just to make sure you are on the right page with the right Russian but that’s not a problem, as with Book 1 there is tekky info but again I could understand it! Its fast paced and comes to a satisfying ending and the epilogue tied up loose ends, wonder if there will be a Book 3?, am hoping so Well told and full on 9/10 5 Stars
Total Fallout was just as good as it’s prequel Total Blackout. I don’t think anyone expected the story to unfold the way it did but the way it did was brilliant. I loved the major plot twist that was given to us that even carried over from the first book, the anger and sadness we felt for Jack Tate suddenly overran us with it. That was superbly delivered.
The addition of the former enemies now turned allies was a welcome one, watching the dynamics of the two’s uneasy relationship unfold. It was interesting to see to me.
It was particularly fun for me to constantly switch between Jack Tate’s perspective and his former arch nemesis, it created a great dynamic and really helped keep the action moving. Alex Shaw clearly knew what he was doing here !
The many plot twists was welcome too, having me constantly wonder what would happen next ? Things like that always make me want to turn the page I find.
5/5 from me! Definitely recommend! Can’t wait to read more of Alex’s Shaw’s work soon.
Total Fallout is the second book about Jack Tate, seconded from the SAS to a clandestine unit operated by the Secret Intelligence Service, and continues his search for the men responsible for the explosion that killed his foster parents. Video footage comes to light that points to the Russian assassin, Ruslan Akulov, as the bomber, but he is being framed and needs to convince Tate before it is too late. A mysterious company called Blackline is behind technology that can manipulate digital images so that even the experts believe they are genuine. If this was possible – and maybe it is? – the repercussions would be frightening; it would be virtually impossible to trust any news, CCTV or mobile phone footage, if it could all be faked. This is a fast-paced action thriller with a likeable main character, and a cast of thoroughly convincing villains who deserve everything they get. Although you could read this as a standalone, I really recommend you read Total Blackout first, as they have a lot of characters and backstory in common. Hopefully, this is not the last we see of Jack Tate. Thanks to HQ Digital and NetGalley for a copy to review.
I received this book from the publisher and NetGalley.
This story is a winner right from the beginning. The way that the story started with the meeting by Chen and the emir introduced the nephew who ultimately becomes part of Jack Tate's mission. The mission involves Jack helping bring the nephew to Australia. Jack meets his contact and hands off the nephew. While resting, he receives a message that a video has been discovered that identifies who killed Jack's parents. He is directed to go to Houston to find him.
At the same time, Akulov who Jack believed killed his parents, was notified that the video positively identified him as the killer. To discover more, he made arrangements to meet his broker. After the meeting he made plans to go to Houston and find the people who knew more about this deed. While there, he stumbled upon the attempted abduction of two women and wound up preventing it and also he happened to kill 1 of the brothers of the Mendez cartel.
Akulov ultimately began being hunted by the other Mendez brother in addition to Jack and his brother Simon. As the story unfolds, the importance of the film being abled to be altered and unable to discover that fact came to the forefront.
The action that happens while the search is on is quite immense. The additional support received by Jack was unexpected because of who the party was.
To discover who the real killer of Jack's parents, what Blackline had a part in and how the entire thing was resolved, you must read this book. You definitely won't be disappointed.
Alex Shaw is turning out some very good thrillers and keeps up his impressive run with this. This does follow on from the previous novel so worth reading that first. Former SAS now turned intelligence agent Jack Tate finds evidence about who planted the bomb that killed his parents. British Intelligence is ahead of the Americans so Tate heads to the States on a manhunt that will deliver revenge. But not all is as it seems and Tate may have to team up with the last person he expects in order to stop an even greater threat. Plenty of these “ex SAS” type thrillers about but most are not written with the deft touch and intelligent plotting delivered by this author. Much to enjoy here, background on characters to explain their motivation, a British intelligence arm that actually feels competent and, of course, plenty of action. Enjoyed this one, good set of characters, plenty of action and a solid plot.
4.5 stars Second book in a great new series, Jack Tate strikes again in a rollercoaster ride of suspenseful moments when he has to save his life and the world from his most hated enemy. I really enjoyed the settings from Qatar and to the USA , trying to catch the Russian, and even crossing the lines in his quest for revenge, Jake Tate is once again a great character that showed me how much I enjoy a great suspenseful book. Gripping and addictive story that many lovers of the genre will enjoy.
Along with his team, Jack Tate is assigned to extricate a member of the Saudi royal family, His Royal Highness Salmon bin Mohammad Al Nayef. Nayef has agreed to share all the information he has on his uncle’s role in terrorism. In return, he will be given a new identity and life in Australia. The mission goes exactly to plan, and once Nayef is escorted into the Australian team’s hands, Tate can concentrate on finding Ruslan Akulov. The man he holds responsible for killing his adoptive parents, the Hunters, killed by the bomb he set off in Camden Market.
Ruslan Akulov in on his own mission – finding and destroying Kirill Vetrov. He knows that he is responsible for distorting the truth and making it appear that he is the man behind the Camden Market bombing. He’s sure that Chen Yan, who he had last encountered with Blackline, is the person behind the fake video that the British Intelligence have, showing him walking away after the bomb exploded. What he doesn’t know when he arrives in the USA to search for Vetrov is that Vetrov works for a Mexican drug cartel.
I had no option but to race through the novel to get to the final page. Alex Shaw has excelled in the storyline. Jack Tate and Ruslan Akulov are supported by a strong cast of characters on their respective journeys to solve how and why Vetrov and Yan went to such great lengths to frame Akulov. I found myself fascinated by how “human” both these men, killers, in essence, are. Yan’s software is also terrifying real and, hopefully, will not appear on the market soon.
Alex Shaw, your storytelling is brilliant! I can’t wait for your next book.

Elite Reviewing Group received a copy of the book to review.
This is the second book in the Jack Tate series, and I would strongly advise that you read the first book Total Blackout, before this book. Events from the first story are entwined in this story too, besides it is one hell of a read!
Jack’s parents have been murdered, and video footage clearly shows the man responsible. New technology has to start somewhere and doctoring the footage and leaving no trace of interfering with it had to come one day. The problem is, getting Jack to realise that he was set up as much as the man on film.
Akulov, a global sort after Russian Assasin, with worldwide acclaim had murdered a very high and powerful man whose brother will use everything he has to bring him down. It turns into an all-action, the adrenaline rush as the trail of who is after who grows and comes back on itself. There is always elite undercover operatives from every country but once trained up there isn’t a way back to what they were before.
It is a perfect globe-trotting thriller that brings action, tension and unexpected pump the air moments. A magnificent ending! I hope that there is more on the way.
I wish to thank Net Galley and the publisher for an e-copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.
I am really, really enjoying this series. This book takes place about a year after the first one ended. It had everything I want and love in a book - thrills, suspense, lots of action and so many plot twists. The author, for me, has created such a likeable, believable main character I just root for throughout the book. The book moved from past to present so effortlessly and I enjoyed reading of the background history of some characters. The book was fast paced from beginning to end and had me hooked from page 1. I particularly like the authors writing style and that the story is told through different characters. Overall, a cracking second book I couldn’t put down and I didn’t want to end. 🤞for a third book in this series. 5 stars
Why would the deadliest Russian assassin be in Houston rescuing two girls from a Mexican cartel? Sounds like something Jack Tate would do. A cell phone was found with a photo that proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Akulov killed Jack's foster parents. Akulov knows he didn't and made himself easy to find. Imagine the weapon a technology would be that could create a fake photo that is indistinguishable from the original. It could topple governments. It is an amazing series of events that transpires for Jack to track down the person responsible and stop the destruction that has been planned for this new technology.
Jack Tates foster parents were killed in a brutal terrorist attack in Camden England. A Russian soldier, actually an extremely elite, highly trained specialist was caught on video. Everyone thinks he's the one responsible. He's not. The video is fake. The problem is even the geniuses at SIS can't tell. Eventually Plato the resident genius, computer wizard figures it out. The hunt is on. Tate and his brother Simon want the person responsible .Dead. The culprit is the former leader of a Russian elite team called the Werewolves. Non stop action!! An excellent read!! Enjoyed immensely!!
Another good story about Jack Tate and his brother Simon Hunter. This was about a person who could do some incredible things with a computer that could cause a war in the Middle East. It was up to Jack to stop it, with the help of Ruslan Akulov, a Russian assassin who saved Jacks life. You really couldn't help but like Akulov, as bad as he was.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book. Total Fallout is the second instalment in the Jack Tate SAS thriller series, Fast paced and well plotted, it moves along at a cracking pace. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to fans of Chris Ryan and Andy McNab.
Excellent use of technology in this second 'Jack Tate' thriller! The plot is gripping throughout with multiple interesting characters who are up to something. Jack needs to figure out what is going on and put a stop to it. Author Alex Shaw has another winner with this series and I look forward to more.
Non-stop action as the good guy operator and the bad guy assassin hunt each other for a variety of reasons. High tech gets involved as well in cases of mistaken (falsified) identity. I received an advanced digital copy of the book from NetGalley and the publisher and voluntarily provided an honest review.
Cracking sequel to Total Blackout. This second book is equally as good as the first. Plenty of action and spy stuff. Lots of twists and turns in the plot. Couldn’t put the book down. It certainly rivals some of the more well known spy books and is equally as enjoyable. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
To be honest, I went into this not expecting much, and at first I was intrigued, but not hooked.
That intrigue turned into complete and utter devotion to what was to come next.
Overall, I highly rate this book. If you've read things like Without Remorse (Tom Clancy,) you'll enjoy this as a much more evolved, and realistic thriller.
The first book had better character development and more about the hero Jack Tate. This second book jumped around too much and had some errors and needed to be more closely edited. This took a great deal away from reading enjoyment. The plot was bizarre. The first book Total Blackout had some similar issues but was much more entertaining. Not sure I’ll trudge through number 3.
This is typical Alex Shah very fast paced and really gets into it It didn't really matter that I hadn't read the first book it just worked. A great way to spend the afternoon totally escaping from everything.
I was given a free copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
Loved it. I was not enamoured with the first book in this series but Total Fallout was terrific. Mexican Cartels, Russian Assassins, and British SAS Operative came together to make a tremendously exciting tale.
What a thrill ride. Great storyline with well rounded characters. Not read Alex Shaw books before but are now on my TBR list. Thank you to HQ Digital and Netgalley for letting me read a review copy
