Fall into a wonderland where a rockstar and athlete’s world collide on a journey through survival, forgiveness and a second chance at love.
--
An “incident” shouldn’t define my life. A smile isn’t the only thing I should remember from the man I lose my V-Card to. And nothing should derail me from my goals. Except as fate likes to play with those who don’t believe in love, I find my Cheshire in the same place I lost him four years ago. Behind his charming grin and his head made of steel, He hides a heart full of love and a ‘happily ever after’ made of dreams. But I work hard to forget away my nightmare…
Love isn’t something I deserve after what happened with my ex. So when I finally find Alice—the girl I’ve obsessed with for the last four years— I’m not sure I’m ready to take a leap. But something compels me to pursue her. She’s smart, determined, and a promising young athlete, and I need her to give me a chance. Even if she thinks I’m a loser and there is no room for me in her life.
The Secrets we keep will break your heart and touch your soul with a love story about surviving your past and forgiving oneself while trying to succeed in your passion.
I knew going into this book that all my emotions would be out and with my hand clutching my heart Gabrielle G delivered a story like only she can.
The Secrets We Keep is like a reunion of sorts in that we get all characters back that we have grown to love throughout this authors writing. It is truly Asher and Hailey's story however it could never have been told without everyone else sticking their noses in.
Both of these leading characters have secrets they hold, especially Hailey (her circumstances can be triggering for some). For me this story was one to teach us that we need to be ok with ourselves before being happy with others. While we can depend on our friends and family they cannot be our crutch. These two together could have been a complete mess because of their pasts but after taking the time and figuring themselves out it is such a beautiful story.
I would recommend reading The Gritt Series and The Darling Devils so you can fully enjoy each character and their place in Asher and Hailey's lives.
I’ve not read a lot of Gabrielle G, but I’ve always admired her commitment to vulnerability and mental health- an author afraid to confront the hardest parts of our humanity. And my did I see that play out in this story- a story that both breaks the hear and heals it. A story as much about the internal love story as the romance- a story about surviving the past.
After an unexpected and unforgettable night many years ago, Asher has never been able to forget his magical Alice, and Hailey has held on to the power she felt with her seductive Cheshire. But time, and pain, have changed them. Once carefree and high on love and reckless youth, now these two are characters deeply paralyzed by their own trauma, both consumed by their own guilt and shame. And so when their paths cross again this is more than just a sparkling chemistry that ensnared them at first, their connection is now bone deep- an inexplicable need for each other. Not only do they remind one another of the self they once were, but they also inspire what neither has been able to find for so long- emotional safety and hope. And Gabrielle so beautifully capitalizes on that emotional connection to open up two incredibly emotional repressed characters- a vulnerability slowly unfolds, one that is both bold and scary, because it gives them space to face their demons safely, but it also means that they do, in fact, have to finally face the secrets they keep.
Hailey is definitely flawed, but Gabrielle isn’t scared to give us stories about characters who themselves think they are hard to love, and Hailey is just that. She’s struggling to love and care for herself because she’s so lost in herself. And as safe as her love for Asher is, it’s also triggering- because it reawakens parts of herself that she thought were gone forever. And I felt that so profoundly-that being trapped in your own mind and body. And Asher, while facing his own pain and self-hatred, is the partner she needs. And oh my is he so dreamy, while also feeling so REAL. He’s patient, understanding, communicative, and honest. Turns out all along he wasn’t the trickster Cheshire, he’s the guide- to take Alice back to what she seeks during her entire adventures- HOME. But he has his own darkness, and supporting Hailey helps him lighten his own emotional burdens. Together they find they can not just survive, they can thrive.
Their love story certainly isn’t conventional or easy- it’s ansty, raw, laced with heartache and pain. But wow is it beautiful. And while I would have loved a bit more time to steep myself in their togetherness to understand their healing a bit more, the heart of this story is so clear and profound. This is a story about the hard work of healing, of learning to FIGHT for yourself- and how love can be a catalyst, but not the cure. How love can expose your innermost self- force you to learn to love all of yourself so that your heart has space to love another, but also give you the strength to do it. That’s a hard but beautiful thing.
I’ve not read all the other stories that feature the secondary characters that play such a fundamental and powerful role in this story, but you can bet that I’ll be checking them out. The characters are just so captivating- real, gritty, flawed, but open hearted. Hailey and Asher’s journey is so heavily touched by each and every one of them- this community lifted them up and guided them- what a beautiful testament to the family you have and the family you make.
This story made my heart heavy, but it also leaves it light because of the hope we find. Facing your own baggage is the hardest work you'll ever do, but also the most important- but, dear Alice, that adventure to Wonderland can be lighter with the love of your Cheshire.
First off I will say that this wasn't an easy book to read. There were many parts that could easily trigger the best of us, or at least anger you. It was a harsh reminder that we all have demons and that we don’t always face them the best way. I also have to say that if you haven't read any of the past books go back and read them. I plan on it because there are moment when things can be a bit confusing depending on who you are dealing with. This IS a standalone but all the side characters minus Adam have had their stories told.
I liked this book but it broke my heart. It broke my heart knowing that both Asher and Hailey went through their separate demons by themselves. It broke my heart that they thought they couldn't go to their loved ones without feeling guilty or like a statistic. Just reading about each issue broke my heart.
I wasn’t a big fan of Hailey. She was just a little immature for me. Not to mention she had tons of loving relationships surrounding her yet she kept letting her mother's words effect her the most. She couldn't see past her own self doubts. She was larger that life and wanted to control her own narrative, and Asher's, yet she couldn't act like the adult when it came to love and someone else's heart.
Asher was a great character even though he let his anger and guilt control him. I liked him but I loved Dex more (his story is one I need to read). Asher was so understanding and patient with Hailey. He was exactly what she needed. These two needed each other. They needed the love and support of their combined families. I'm glad they found each other and were able to settle their demons.
*I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review*
I don't even know where to start. This book had me from the very beginning. So well done with the way the subject matter was handled. Both Asher and Hailey have pasts that haunt them, traumatic events that happened and the aftermath. I was so caught up in the story and it took me awhile to adjust after I finished it. Well written and thought provoking. You have another great one, Gabrielle G
This was my first read by Gabrielle G, and what an emotional roller-coaster it was! I'm fan of her writing style.
Asher's and Hailey's story was raw, deep and messy. Both of them dealing with heavy pasts, they were imperfectly perfect for each other.
Even though I haven't read the other books, it didn't alter my reading experience. I did feel a bit confused at the beginning with all these characters showing up at once. But once I figured out who was who to who, I loved this big unique recomposed family, and how everyone was there for each other.
I liked and disliked Hailey: her brutal honesty was refreshing, even if with no tact. But sometimes Ash needed to hear the ugly truth to wake up and move on!! Her ambition and motivation were very inspiring.
💭["Asher Crawford is kind of a loser. A wonderful man, an extraordinary musician, a fantastic writer, but he’s a loser for not pursuing his dream."]
At one part of the book, I felt she was selfish and immature. But thankfully it didn't last long, and people around her made sure she knew how stupid her behavior was. She redeemed herself pretty good and fast.
Same for Asher: I liked him a lot. He was selfless, kind and loving. But he was also insecure and lacking confidence in himself and the people around him. He put himself down a lot and didn't feel worthy of success and love.
💭["I’m not asking to sell out stadiums around the world like the Darlings, but just some recognition that I’m not a piece of shit nobody will ever love fully. It makes sense, and it doesn’t. I have an inflated ego that keeps breaking. I have confidence in my talent that is met with doubts within myself. I’m two sides of a coin that needs to stand on its edge, and I’m no good at anything except drinking."]
Both of them had their own reasons to feel and act that way, and I loved how they both helped each other heal and grow up emotionally.
Overall, I loved this story very much. The scenario and conversations felt more realistic to me, not everything being over-romanticized. The fact that the guy was the insecure one and the girl the as.hole in this story was a big plus for me! The traumatic event Hailey was victim of was very well dealt by the author.
💭["The culture we live in and the laws created by men of gods or men in power will always dismiss women being assaulted and reward the criminal who did so by blaming the victims through the way she was dressed, the way she behaved, the way she spoke. That’s why I wanted to stay silent , but it’s also why I want Asher to create a song on the subject because women are barely heard, and men are always listened to."]
The Secrets We Keep is my favorite Gabrielle G book to date. I started reading it late one night and couldn’t put it down. It’s raw and it’s real. There are a few triggers in this book, so beware, but if you can make it through them it’s worth it, I promise.
It was a little unconventional how this love story started out but I loved all the twists, turns, and secrets exposed to get it there. This book is about overcoming terrible things and finding yourself again then finding love. It’s magical.
So thank you Gab for giving us your words. I’ll never stop reading them!
An emotional story about two broken souls connecting and getting a second chance at a hea. ASHER AND hailey’s story hit me in the feels and this is hands down my fave Gabrielle G book to date. It’s raw, heartbreakingly beautiful and a captivating read. This can be read as a standalone but previous characters are seen so to get the full effect I highly recommend you read her other books but as I said it isn’t necessary.
WOW! What a beautiful and emotional book 😭❤ Asher's and Hailey's story is so damn heartbreaking and tragic. So many raw and real emotions. Do not get me wrong, their story is unbelievable romantic, but overshadowed with a lot of pain and dark events from their past. She is the new star in the basketball world and he is the starving musician, that lost his hope and enthusiasm for a future.
This book takes you on a journey through all shadows of healing from a childhood traumatic experiences, a guild-ridden depression and a sexual abuse.
This beautiful love story will take you on a rollercoaster of brutal emotions and heartwarming feelings. It's a story of healing and forgiving oneself while trying their hardest to find a hope for the future.
No, this book is not sweet and swoony, definitely not at the beginning, but it's a wonderful journey of two damaged souls that find the ultimate happiness in each other despite all the ups and downs and the secrets they kept.
Gabrielle G has ones again wrote an unbelievable raw, real and romantic story. Definitely a must-read for all romance lovers ❤
This book is a standalone, but all characters from this book have their own books, that I love and recommend to read ❤
I have no words to tell you how much this story consumed me. It's raw, painful, heartbreaking, beautiful and sweet all the same. I loved every page, every word, everything. I must admit I fell in love with Gabrielle's poetry first and then I discovered that her stories are something else. She has a way of writing that makes you feel the life of her characters. This book made me cry, made me smile and made me angry. Asher and Hailey, a rock star and a basketball player, two different worlds, two broken souls learning to survive, to love and to live, their story is not to be missed. We all have secrets we keep and we need to set them free to be able to breathe again. This story is a must read and I warn you, it will make you cry.
What a powerful and emotional story! The Secrets We Keep by Gabrielle G. surprised the hell out of me, because it was much more than I had expected. it to be Asher stole my heart, Alice/Hailey intrigued me. I’m still angry and upset about her “incident” and the way she felt about it. God Bless Asher, who has been very understanding and supportive. Besides I loved it, because it was unpredictable and painfully beautiful! I screamed YEEEES, when I read the part where Hailey spoke about the double standard in our society between men and women when it comes to desire and sexuality.
Sadly I haven’t read the stories of the other characters in the book. Even if it’s a standalone, (here and there) I felt like I missed something.
Gabrielle guides us through the parts of love and life that aren't so pretty, scraping away the gloss to expose the raw grit that makes her writing stand apart. I absolutely love the way she stirs emotion, and this duo is one of my favorites of hers to date <3
The Secrets We Keep is a standalone book by Gabrielle G. If you’re a fan of Gabrielle’s (and you should be, she’s awesome!) Hailey and Asher won’t be new to you. I love that I have gotten to watch them grow up and now they are getting their own story. We also get to see all our favorite characters from The Gritt Family Series, the Angels & Sunshine Series and some cameos from the Darling Devils as well. Gabrielle has said that this book was more for her and her mental health and that it was almost never published. I’m so grateful that it did and I hope Gabrielle realizes how much her writing has meant to me and I’m sure it’s touched so many others as well. If you are looking for a pretty story all neatly wrapped in a perfect bow - this book is not for you. Gabrielle is the Queen of “Real.. Raw.. Romantic.” This book may not be for everyone. There is a darkness that will break your heart but it was such a cathartic read for me. I can relate to a lot of both Hailey and Asher’s trauma, and as much as I wish it didn’t, this story resonates with my own demons. It is so easy to fall in love with Hailey and Asher - as individual people and as a couple. The way their lives are so intertwined and that they don’t even realize it at first, makes this such and interesting story. Talk about fate and “meant to be!” They seem so different and they shouldn’t mesh, but at their core they compliment each other and it’s beautiful to watch. There is so much bad that could and should break them, so to watch the fight and the strength and determination is worth all the heartache. The storyline is a refreshing take on second chances and melds the two worlds of Sports Romance and Rock Star Romance. I hope you read it and loved it as much as I did and that you realize there will be a rainbow if you can weather the storm. Not gonna lie - I cried (a lot) - but is so worth it. Thank you Gabrielle for another book that will change me forever. ARC graciously given by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Touching love story with a HEA! Plus one of the best kissing scenes!
The Secrets We Keep is about the love story between WNBA player Hailey and could be rock star Asher who meet on the night Hailey is determined to give her virginity to a stranger after learning her college boyfriend and his friends have a $1000 bet on who will take her virginity. Little did either Asher or Hailey know how powerful of a bound would form between them from sharing this intimate act.
Four years later our two main characters run into each other at a family celebration. Their uncles have fallen in love and married joining the two families. Once in each other's presence the attraction takes over. They're drawn back to each other, but Asher has pined for the girl he deflowered and wants more than a physical reunion. Hailey has gone through an experience that she has kept secret and fears risking more than a physical relationship with Asher. The pull is too great between them to resist and each ends up giving in to their desires. Secrets come out. Each has to come to terms with what they really want from each other and out of life.
The Secrets We Keep has one of the best kissing scenes I've ever read. The main characters are easy to fall in love with and to become invested in. Their love story has a happy ending. I recommend The Secrets We Keep to anyone looking for a strong female sports mc, a loving rock star male mc, an incredible kissing scene, fully developed characters dealing with relevant issues, and/ or looking for a happy ever after. Gabrielle G. has written a poignant love story in The Secrets We Keep.
Gabrielle G delivers an raw, emotional, and gut wrenching story. A chance, one time interaction between Hailey and Ash has a different meaning for each of them.
Hailey has suffered an unspeakable event that has shaped her plans for the future. She also has some family issues and feels like her life path is being directed by others.
Ash also has baggage, and is just settling instead of working hard to be the performer he wants to be. He feels responsible for a tragic event and cannot forgive himself.
Both are keeping secrets and holding onto so much pain from their past that they struggle to be happy and love their lives. These characters are so beautiful, broken and their pain will hurt your heart.
Another chance meeting has them spending time together, sharing secrets and proving love and support for each other. They have to decide, as a couple, what their future should/will look like.
Gabrielle’s writing is so beautiful and her story telling will pull you in….I couldn’t put the book down.
I requested an arc and I am providing my honest review.
“It feels like I always find my way to you when I’m the most lost.”
The Secrets We Keep is raw, edgy, painful, and heartbreakingly beautiful. Gabrielle G never shies away from difficult subject matter and this is one of her most emotional and angsty books to date.
“Asher is like an ointment on the abrasions of my heart.”
Asher and Hailey both have traumatic pasts that have shaped the people they are today. They hide behind a façade while hiding the secret pain underneath the surface, but somehow, with each other, they are able to find the courage to deal with their pasts and to find the strength and peace of mind to heal.
“I want to know her every thought, every fear, every trouble. I want to breathe her love and consume her body. But more than anything, I want to destroy anyone who has ever wronged her. Hailey is my everything.”
Be warned that this book is not for the faint of heart. It hurts, but the love story that develops is so beautiful and touching that the journey is so worth the pain.
Hailey and Asher had a one night stand four years ago that left them thinking about each other often through out the years. Who would think that when they meet up again that connection they had that first night would be still be there?
When they meet again lots have change in their personal lives but that connection they have is still very much alive. That connection allows them to help each other with their individual demons.
This story is very well written, with some amazing characters and a developed plot. There are strangers who connect, family and friends who are there through it all and will support you come what may! The absolute realness and rawness of this story will have you turning the pages until the very end.
I honestly don’t even know how to explain my feelings for this book. Gabrielle G has made me speechless and that’s very rare for me when it comes to my books lol. This story is a collision of so much darkness but also hope that there is light at the end of that cold and bleak tunnel. There were many conflicting emotions while Asher and Hailey were fighting to accept and overcome their past traumas. I loved so much about this book. I highlighted the heck out of so many passages because so much of what was said and felt was so real and resonated with me. The laughs, the tears, the highs and lows. I was there for it all and the fact that it included my favorite people from stories past was just the icing on the cake. I’m definitely going to need a few more stories before this series can be called complete. (Here’s to hoping anyway *wink*)
This is Asher and Hailey’s story, and he is a starving musician, while she is the star of the basketball court. Asher has obsessed over Hailey for the past few years, and he is determined to pursue her. These two are both damaged souls and are haunted by their pasts, and together they compliment and support each other perfectly. This is a beautifully written story which is raw, gritty, and is a heartwrenching tale which pulls at the heartstrings throughout, and is an emotional roller coaster, with secrets, healing, family, trauma, heartbreak, family, forgiveness, and love. I was totally enthralled throughout this riveting page turner, and I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend. Be aware there may be triggers due to some of the content, which are written with compassion and sensitivity.
My first read by this author and I’m a fan! This author delivered a solid, well written, gripping story overflowing with emotions. An athlete and a rockstar! What a combo and it worked! The characters were flawlessly developed and more importantly they were perfectly imperfect. Intense, and heart wrenching, this was not always an easy book to read because there were multiple issues affecting these characters. For some readers they may be considered triggers, for me, these issues added more grit and complexity to the story. I discovered that once you get passed it, you’ll enjoy this story as being about overcoming obstacles and finding acceptance and love. Although, this book is a standalone, I did find myself a little lost with some elements of the story because it warranted knowledge about past scenes from prior books. However, it didn’t take away from enjoying this read. 4.5 stars!
As soon as I found out about this book I had to go and add it to my TBR right away. I instantly started looking forward to it and couldn't wait to pick it up. When I did it grabbed my attention right away. I enjoyed this story!
Hailey and Asher's journey is not an easy one. I truly loved the realness that poured throughout the pages of this book from these two characters. I liked the fact that I got to get into both of their minds and how I felt so much with both of them as well!
With The Secrets We Keep, Gabrielle G. has created such a good read that'll make you feel so much! She brought the emotion! I am looking forward to picking up more of her books in the future! 💜
*I volunteered to read and review a copy of this book from the author*
This was the book I had been waiting on since meeting Asher! It did not disappoint. He's this beautiful tortured soul who's hanging on to so much pain and secrets. It's funny that in your head you can feel so broken but your broken heart might just be the exact thing someone else needs to heal. It might not make sense just like Asher and Hailey shouldn't make sense but it's just right.
Hailey is this determined driven so put together star athlete who is moments from shattering from all her secrets. She thinks that she can make a deal to keep her secrets and her heart safe but it's not the right path for her. Fate keeps bringing Asher and Hailey together in the worst timing but most needed moments. These two just have to decide to fight for what heals their hearts- each other.
None of Gab's books are easy and you will want to smack both Asher and Hailey a few times but don't give up on them. Nothing wonderful is ever easy. The entire cast of Gab's books make an appearance in this one which I loved so hard.
TW for you- this book deals with the aftermath of sexual assault. You can read as a stand alone but i think the experience is so much more knowing all the characters and how they are interconnected.
Gabrielle G continues to break you apart and put you back together. I honestly can’t gush enough about how much I loved reading The Secrets We Keep. I don’t think I can express how amazing this book is, as heartbreakingly beautiful as it is. Gabrielle did an incredible job telling both Hailey and Asher’s stories and I really enjoyed catching up with all the characters from her earlier series as they made appearances throughout the book. As always, Gabrielle’s flow and writing style was wonderful, I could barely put down the book once I started it.
First, I will give a warning, there are possible triggers for some. A beautiful emotional well written with great sensitivity story revolving around how rape, addiction and loss affects a person’s growth and life. Both main characters dealing with the above and finding themselves and each other to a beautiful HEA. This book can be read as a standalone, I do highly recommend reading Gabrielle’s Gritt and Darling series for a richer understanding of the supporting characters. 5 stars plus!!!
Gabrielle G. has penned another emotional story that is raw, gritty, and beyond engaging! Asher & Hailey both have experienced some dark and tragic events in their past, but their journey is everything you expect from one of Gabrielle G.'s books... and more! I can say this is one of my favorites of her novels. The Secrets We Keep by Gabrielle G. is an EPIC read that will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ARISTOCRACY!!!
Fantastic read!! Asher and Hailey's story took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride. Two people from different worlds, both keeping secrets, have pasts that haunt them, and find it hard to be happy. A wonderfully written story, with great characters, and filled emotions, secrets, highs, and lows. Highly recommend.
The Secrets We Keep was a good read. It starts with the two main characters who randomly hook up one night never really thinking they would see eachother again. Hailey and Asher do infact see eachother again of course. Both battling their own demons. I wasn't the biggest fan of Hailey but Asher was something else. This wasn't my favorite read but definitely worth reading.
The Secrets We Keep is the perfect title for this book. This is a hard book to read at times as it deals with some difficult subjects that could be a trigger for some.
I enjoyed the unexpectedness of this story and the way the love story between Asher and Hailey unfolded. Both of the main characters are guarding their secrets close, at times it hurt to be privy to those secrets. This could have been a book that focused solely on the very real pain that Hailey especially lives with but it was also a story of hope and self acceptance. It was refreshing to read about characters who took the time to work through their issues both separately and as a couple . I felt the timespan of the storyline was just right and felt a natural pace.
This isn't an easy read. Books like this tell a story, but also speak many truths. Hailey and Asher are survivors. Each haunted by the past, neither fully dealing with it sets the pace for this emotional journey. Expect to see all your favorites and maybe shed a tear.
