For over a decade, JD Devereaux’s son has been raised to think his father is dead. But he’s not. At least, not yet.
Private investigator Sydney Brennan agrees to track down Devereaux because she’d do anything to give her friend a chance at knowing his father. Of course, Sydney believes the most dangerous thing she’ll face in the Florida Panhandle is memories of her most recent investigation. She couldn’t be more wrong.
Devereaux is a man on the run. He doesn’t want Sydney’s help, dodging her at every turn, and he refuses to tell her who’s after him or why. Soon dead bodies start dropping, and Sydney isn’t about to let Devereaux become the next victim. But when they’re outgunned and outmaneuvered, will Sydney’s quick wits and stubborn resolve be enough to keep them alive?
A recovering criminal attorney, Judy K. Walker has enough spare letters after her name (and student loan debt) to suggest that insatiable curiosity is something fictional private investigator Sydney Brennan inherited from her creator. Fortunately, Judy’s curiosity rarely involves murders. She also penned the Dead Hollow Trilogy, an Appalachian thriller series with a touch of the paranormal that taps into her West Virginia origins.
The Sydney Brennan Mysteries stand alone, but do build upon each other. The books, featuring Tallahassee Private Investigator Sydney Brennan and a recurring supporting cast, are (in reading order): Back to Lazarus, Secrets in Stockbridge, The Perils of Panacea, No Safe Winterport, Braving the Boneyard, River Bound, and Grave Truth.
Dead Hollow is a true trilogy of supernatural crime thrillers and must be read IN ORDER: Prodigal, Founder, and Heir.
Judy writes from her home in Hawaii, where she is surrounded by husband, feral pigs, and assorted geckos.
Four stars because few things are perfect. However, the pace of the story, the relationship within it, the smart as s telling...all very readable while projecting the fact a young boy loved his mother and really wanted to know his father. The ups and downs occurred at just the right times to keep one reading.
An entertaining read. Tallahassee pi Sydney is pulled into intrigue in the Florida handle by her neighbor who wants to locate her ex. Characters are nuanced and life in the Panhandle is accurate even if a few of the places do not exist. Thoroughly enjoyed the book and plan to read more.
A little bit of what we all aspire to be is wrapped up in Sydney Brennan. A surprisingly great find with this series, there is humor, adventure, humility and enough to keep you reading to the next book
