3,5 'Sea adventures' stars

This was a lovely story about sea adventures. Yes, lovely. Apparently, even pirates can be totally decent fellows. If Jorge was indeed a pirate at all. He didn't seem that much pirate-ish.

Anyway, I liked his character and I liked Bathsheba. However, together they weren't exactly a memorable couple. I get that this story was more a novella size and that insta-love was inevitable but there were zero feelings involved. Sex scenes were hot, though, so at least they did well in the "lust department".

This was my first book by this author and I'll definitely try more because the writing was very good and engaging. Plus bonus points for a very original setting and the title is all kinds of awesome!

Emmanuelle de Maupassant’s writing is always excellent. She has a wonderful way with words and her books captivate and transport. This book is a novella and is the story of widow Lady Bathsheba Asquith (what a name!) and Captain Jorge de Silva.

Lady Bathsheba is supposed to meet her brother, but he doesn’t show. She enlists the help of Captain Silva to try to locate him. Silva’s help isn’t free, however, and she has only 3 days to locate her brother on Vanuaka island which is inhabited by cannibals. This book reminded me of an Indiana Jones movie or even Romancing the Stone. There is romance, suspense, and adventure!

This book is a great escape. 5 stars for entertainment and great writing! I received a complimentary ARC in exchange for my voluntary review.

A Surprising Discovery

I admittedly went into this with low expectations. The title just seemed too... much? In the end, I found it very entertaining and my favorite of the series so far.

Lady Bathsheba Asquith is in for more than she bargained for when she sets out to find her brother. I enjoyed the relationship development between her and Captain Jorge de Silva. It's not a straight trajectory towards a solid forever but the bumps keep things interesting, tarantulas, restless natives, active volcano, hidden caves, and all.

I received an author's copy of The Lady's Guide to Love audio book collection, which includes this title. The narrator is Gareth J Davies. I like listening to him and I really like the accents, even if the pronunciation of 'Jorge' was off. ❤️😍❤️

Publisher Hot Historical Romance

Blurb :

Under the protection of darkly handsome Captain Jorge de Silva, Lady Bathsheba Asquith lands on the mysterious island of Vanuaka with only three days to find her missing brother.

The trials of the jungle strip away any pretense of propriety and passion flares, but de Silva is not all he seems, and Bathsheba is in more danger than she can imagine.

Vanuaka’s volcano is awakening—and only a human sacrifice can appease its fire.

Another story from 'The Lady's Guide' series: historical romance brimming with adventure, mystery, passion--and a large helping of frivolous fun.

My review :

When a lady hires a captain and his crew, can secrets and deceit be overcome when their life’s are at stake ...

Lady Bathsheba has followed the rules all her life, living the “perfect life” of a society’s miss and peer’s wife, her only glimpse of adventure through the letters sent by her explorer of a brother.
Yet now widowed for many years, she wants more from her life than ball gowns and parties.
So for once, she follows her heart instead of reason and here she is awaiting her brother’s return in a far away place.
Jorge is following his grandfather and father steps, captaining his inherited ship and also providing protection for his mother’s people.
His mixed origins make him the perfect man for Bathsheba’s mission but he would be out of his depth in her world.
Bathsheba is a kind and loving woman who is longing for more from life, she is true and caring, and despite her naivety and inexperience, she jumps willingly in her first adventure.
When Jorge is a bit more jaded by his past challenges and when he sees her first as a mean to an end, he is also drawn to her.
How can they reach the other when secrets lurk in the shadows awaiting to tear them apart.
A 5 stars tale of finding its inner strength and fighting for what we want.

I was granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.

Lady Bathsheba Asquith has been a widow for three years & has travelled to meet her brother only he’s late, very late to the rendezvous. So the intrepid Bathsheba downs two glasses of spirits & coaxes Captain Silva to take her to Vanuaka to find her brother. He agrees for an exorbitant fee & gives her three days for her search. The trials of the jungle strip away any pretence of propriety and passion flares, but de Silva is not all he seems, and Bathsheba is in more danger than she can imagine. Vanuaka’s volcano is awakening—and only a human sacrifice can appease its fire.
A fun entertaining read a mix of Indiana Jones & passion & I loved it. The pages flew by & I read it in a sitting. Strong characters & an attraction that sizzles, throw in bathing in pools by a waterfall & natives wanting to appease the volcano & I was one very happy reader. I’m loving the Lady's Guides & look forward to many more
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

A sexy and fun Indiana Jones style adventure!

The Lady's Guide series of books feature strong, independent and intelligent women who crave adventure and excitement in their lives. Lady Bathsheba does not fit into the mold that society puts her, as an aristocratic young woman, into. She accompanies her father and brother on archaeological explorations but now she is alone and desperate to find her missing brother in the South Pacific. Her only hope is a pirate with a shady reputation. Jorge is the rare pirate that has scruples about what he does. He is reluctant to let Bathsheba hire his ship to go after her brother on a dangerous island with cannibals for natives. But he needs to money. He also has a dark secret that he keeps from her. The short book is full of excitement, adventure, humor and passion as the two try to stay one step ahead of the natives and the violent volcano to try to follow her brother's route. I really loved the book and Jorge is definitely swoon-worthy!I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was such a fun read and I could just see it all happening in my mind. You'll smile, you'll laugh out loud, you'll snicker, you'll gasp, you'll swoon...as for me, I'd still be running away from that huge furry spider! lol

I loved both main characters, Bathsheba and Jorge. Bathsheba has always gone by the rules and now, after being a widow for the last 3 years, she decides to travel to the island of Vanuaka, hoping to find her brother with the help of Jorge, whom she's hired. Jorge is the captain of his ship but he's in dire need of money so when Bathsheba advances him, he agrees to help her. All does not go well on the island, thanks to the natives and volcano!!! With danger all around them, Bathsheba learns to "let loose" the strict rules she's always known and both she and Jorge cannot hide the attraction they have for each other. She wanted an adventure...well she got it!!

This was quite a different story, set in the islands near Australia. Lady Bathsheba Asquith has bravely set out in search of her brother. She wanted an adventure, similar to those her father and brother went on. To help her in her quest to find her brother, she pays Captain Jorge de Silva to take her to the island, Vanuaka. Jorge is desperate for the money she will pay him. They are attracted to each other and when they are on the island together, things progress. Jorge is unlike any man Bathsheba has known and she wonders why she is so attracted to him. However, Jorge has a secret that may affect how Bathsheba feels about him. There are some dangerous moments on the island that will keep you reading until the end. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Emmanuelle de Maupassant's books are always really good, and guaranteed steam with strong heroine and sexy alpha! In this book Captain Jorge de Silva owns his own ship, he is hired for a dangerously risky job, by the beautiful Lady Bathsheba Asquith.
She is a mission to look for her missing brother on an island with cannibals and a temperamental volcano! Lot's of action and suspense, with sexual attraction and chemistry. This is a fun read and cannot wait for the next one in this series.

Fun Story!
What do you do when your brother goes missing? Well, you go looking for him of course! Even if you are a young female on her own!
We have our wonderful hero in Jorge de Silva whom our heroine, the widowed Lady Bathsheba hires to help her find her missing brother.
There is a book, written to help ladies by giving the most interesting advice on how to handle the various situations a lady could possibly find herself in - hence the title.
Such a fun adventure filled with a hot, passionate romance, a very appealing sea captain, the mystery of a missing brother and of course the cannibals.
I couldn't ask for more in a story and I loved every minute of it.

Don't let the title scare/stop you from reading this book. The adventure takes place during September/October 1899 on the Island of Vanuaka, East of the Solomons. Inadvertently the Heroine, Lady Bathsheba Asquith, and the Hero, Captain Jorge de Silva, are linked through her brother whom she was suppose to meet in British New Guinea.
This turns out to be their HEA but only after a 3 day ordeal on the Island and the trials and tribulations they encountered.
The outcome was not what Lady Bathsheba hoped for.
I'll let you do the reading of their adventures.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story as an easy, quick, and refreshing read and would recommend it to anyone looking for an easy readable book.

In Emmanuelle de Maupassant style, she's given us a pirate with a heart. Fallen on hard times, he and his crew do what they need to do when his ship is in desperate need of repairs and he finds himself in debt. Our heroine? A widow of three years, she finds herself traveling across the oceans to find her brother and estranged father, in hopes of having her own adventure. There are scenes where I chuckled just from the realistic picture being painted, especially in the hotel lounge. There were a few moments that gave me a second thought as to what the outcome would be when they were in peril and, of course, the chemistry between them was certainly a slow build that could not be denied. The storyline itself is one that I couldn't put down and by the time I finished, I did so with a sigh. Absolutely rake worthy

Mrs Bathsheba Asquith meets Captain Jorge de Silva and first impressions don't last. She came to Moresby to find her missing brother and de Silva knows more than he lets on. The title is quite catchy and extraordinary given the setting. We see an English lady but her heart is wild and she really matched well with Jorge.

I liked the pace of the story, it has enough background for us to know both of the characters and while this isn't some drawn-out love affair, I liked how their attraction and chemistry was presented. I also liked the adventure part and the possibility of Bathsheba following her heart to happiness.

Unique story of Lady Bathsheba Asquith and Captain Jorge de Silva and their adventures in the Solomon Islands. Bathsheba hires Jorge to help her find her brother who has gone missing. Needing the money he agrees despite knowing its a lost cause. Loved Bathsheba, a strong, determined woman willing to put her fears and doubts aside to find her loved one. Loved that this story took us out of the ballrooms and into the jungle. A rare find of a story.

A fluffy three hour read that was like a 1940’s movie Complete with jungle drums, scary dancing natives, an erupting volcano, and a treasure hunt. The characters were well drawn for the length of the book and likable. The best part was the glimpse into the anthropology of the South Seas islands.

Highly styled but not my taste

Just couldn't get into this. Felt like stepping back 200 years... Not in any good way. Fancy racist white people problems... Not my problem. DNF.

I can admire the author's skill in portraying the time period and characters evocatively, but that's it.

This was a great read with lots of suspense, romance, over the top handsome Captain Jorge de Silve and
the widow, Lady Bathsheba Asquith. I wanted to read this book because of the title, I had to know how an English Lady ended up with Cannibals. I was gifted an ARC from Booksprout and the author.
What an interesting story. We learn a lot about some of the islands and sailing too.
Lady Bathsheba Asquith is a widow now and her family wants her to remarry soon. She has had enough of marriage. Although her late husband was kind and giving it was not a love match. He was much older and wanted a pretty lady to show off. He already had five sons. She has grown tired of the endless balls; society and all the ton seem to want. Her father was in to academics and sailed to faraway places to learn about different cultures. Her mother bought her back to England when she was five and she has not seen him since. Her brother Sebastian has joined their father in his work.
She has traveled to British New Guinea to meet Sebastian and join them. Only once there she finds that he is missing. She hires Jorge to take to the island where he was last known to be. He agrees to take her knowing he is charging her too much and that his secrets make him uneasy.
As these two learn of each other the attraction is combustible. She wants to know what she missed in her marriage and Jorge is the perfect person to show her.
There is a lot going on with secrets on both sides. Exploring the island while the volcano is awakening and trying to keep from being find. All in all, this is a really fast good read, the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is the ending is really abrupt. It should have had and Epilogue telling what happen to them . I don't want to give away any spoilers but the ending was disappointing.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Lady’s Guide to Escaping Cannibals. The title hooked me right away and I had to give this historical romance a try. It lived up to expectations except for one shocking scene.

When Bathsheba’s much older husband dies, she’s left a wealthy widow with freedom she’s never had before. She decides to join her explorer father & brother on a South Seas adventure. But when she gets to the tropical island, she learns her father has died, and her brother has gone missing. She hires privateer Capt. Jorge DeSilva to take her to the small island where her brother vanished.

What Jorge doesn’t tell her is he knows for a fact her brother was killed by the cannibal natives. (Not eaten, just shot). But he’s sure she won’t believe him, and he needs money or he’ll lose his ship. So he agrees to take her to the island for three days. After that, he plans to tell her the truth.

What I liked the most about this book was writing. The author painted a vivid picture with her words. There was the right amount of detail (not too little, not too much) to bring the story to light with authenticity.

That said, I had one problem with the story: there is a scene in which the heroine rapes the hero. They get captured by cannibals (this isn’t a spoiler, you have to know that’s going to happen). He’s tied up and unconscious. She decides the way to wake him up is to have sex with him while he’s unconscious and still tied up. Nope, she doesn’t even untie him. (To make it worse, they’d already had sex before this, but he had regrets afterwards, and rejected further advances). She did wonder if what she was doing was right. The answer should have been no. What would you call it if a man took advantage of an unconscious woman? The reverse is just as true. If the scene was supposed to be “sexy,” it missed the mark for me.

Other than that, it was a decent historical romance with a unique concept.

Implausible Plot; Despicable Hero

I have read several books by this author, and I usually enjoy her unique style. While I found certain parts of this book to be amusing or fun, especially at the start, on the whole, I didn't like this book—which is too bad as I have liked her other books much better. What ruined it for me was the hero. I absolutely have to grow to love the hero as a story progresses for it to be a good one for me. He didn't treat the heroine well. Essentially, he knows he's scamming her from the start and putting her in danger for no reason. What sort of hero is that? He's using her to get money to pay off a debt. The heroine is plucky and independent, but I thought she was a little stupid at times, which I never like to see in a romantic heroine. For a story that has the potential to be an action-adventure romance, the first half of the book was pretty staid. That first half really is only about her discovering her brother's absence and the sea voyage to get to where she believes she might find him. Nothing much really happens until they get to the island, and then things get more interesting. But I feel that half the book is too long to wait for that! But I found that last half to be needlessly melodramatic, over the top, and ultimately unbelievable. Fiction has to be credible and grounded in reality at least at a certain level or it just seems absurd. Some of what happened in that section, my goodness! Because I didn't like the way the hero was scamming and lying to the heroine, I felt absolutely no chemistry between them. Because I so disliked the hero and his outright lies to her, done to only benefit him, their more intimate moments seemed more “icky” than sensual.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

a cura della nostra Minou:

Ciao Mici!

A presto, mici... Miaooo

As a widow, Lady Bathsheba Asquith has the freedom to pursue family interests and reunite with her missing brother. Venturing to a South Pacific island, Bathsheba hires captain, Jorge de Silva, as a guide but she finds more than she could have expected.

“It was a leap into the unknown, but she was ready.”

Each novella in this series is uniquely intriguing and The Lady’s Guide to Escaping Cannibals provided for an intriguing adventure. Bathsheba is a more of an independent woman for the time and she is a challenge to the mysterious and handsome Jorge. Together they navigate the unknown which further strengthens their connection.

A wonderfully tender and adventurous story that hold you within its pages
This is a historical story that is based around a brother and sister that have been born into a time of haves and have nots, titled and untitled people and everything else that is based around this splendidly written story.
Although is fair to say that it is somewhat far fetched the characters and the plot have been so well written and the setting is also something tropical, attention to detail is beyond my imagination and the appreciation I have for the author and the details she has put in this amazing story will leave you total speechless and in some of these amazing locations.
English widow, Bathsheba, sheds her prim and proper persona that she hates and for the sake of her brother Sebastian sets out to find him wherever he is, then she is going to tell him about his stupidity in setting out by himself and then love and hug him so that he knows she is forgiven.
My captain Jorge agrees to take Bathsheba out to the Island Of Vanuaka where her brother was supposed to have gone, however Jorge has a guilty secret about Sebastian.
I am not going to say any more as I do not want to spoil the main storyline and twist of the story so I will let you read this yourself.
I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.

And suddenly the book was out!
A historical adventure story with a romance in it. Bathsheba has been a widow for 3 years now and to prevent her from doing what society expects of her (to remarry), she decides to follow the path of her father and brother. They are at the islands of New Guinea to map archeology and publish their writings. Once arrived in Moresby, however, her brother cannot be found. A letter he left at her hotel tells her that he will visit the island of Vanuaka and then come to her her. But the letter was written weeks ago, he should have been backby now! In search of a boat that will take her to her brother, she meets Captain Jorge de Silva. For a lot of money he will take her for the journey and search for her brother for 3 days on the island.
Once on the island, Bathsheba will have to face her own fears of heights, scary animals and ignorance. But also learn what physical love is after 5 years of a loveless marriage. But that's not the only danger they will face together. Captured by cannibals and a volcano on eruption. How are they going to survive this?

A wonderful story. Tension between Jorge and Bathsheba that lead to beautiful scenes. Tension surrounding their imprisonment. Tension when secrets come to light......

This is a fast paced story with an intrepid heroine. She's a wealthy widow and is in search of her father and brother. She sails to New Guinea where she is to meet her brother. She finds a letter that says he should be here by now so she sets off to find him.

He's a ship's captain and he needs money so he offers to take her to the island her brother was heading for. But he's adaptable to which side of the law he sits on at the time, in other words a pirate. Together they'll find an adventure, obstacles and love.

Great historical romance with a twist. Bathsheba is more than a typical english lady. She's bold, adventurous and determined to find her brother and carve a future for herself. I liked that although she is widowed (and isn't 18 or 20) she wasn't miserable, just felt out of place when her husband died. With enough money and no reins, she takes on the world.

Jorge might be flexible about right and wrong concerned the law but he's a strong man and he's NOT stupid or slow. He's actually the perfect match for Bathsheba and he's as willing to take a risk as she is. Together they can overcome everything and the things that they do deal with (see the title of the book) are fun, fast, furious and hair raising. Great characters, a hot relationship, characters that I really appreciated and a harrowing adventure.

The Lady's Guide to Escaping Cannibals by Emmanuelle de Maupassant, audio version, was an enticing and entertaining short listen. The story is that Lady Bathsheba Asquith, a young widow, has come to the island of Vanuaka on the ship of Captain Jorge de Silva, mostly because she was the only one she could find willing to take her. They have arrived at its shore, having been dropped off by the ship proper, with only three days to find her brother. Will it be enough?

This was an entertaining story featuring the Lady's Guide, which has proven to be a help to other young ladies facing life. It is arranged in alphabetical order and features a section on "Fear," which Bathsheba is taking to heart. She meets Jorge in the bar at her hotel where she underwhelms him with all the information she has. He is in desperate need of money and she seems to have enough. It is a purely mercenary relationship between two highly entertaining personalities. The story is thin but the people make all the difference.

Gareth J Davis is the narrator and he beings the story to life, especially Jorge's accent. He is beyond competent as a narrator.

I was invited to listen to this audio version of the The Lady's Guide to Escaping Cannibals by the author. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #emmanuelledemaupassant #theladysguidetoescapingingcannibals
