The book is divided into two parts, each with an array of poignant imagery, metaphors and vignettes to elaborate the essence of life and memory. It is written from a period of individual destruction to a renaissance which evokes a journey of self-love and misadventure.

About the author

Ekta Somera is a South African storyteller at the intersection of publishing and youth advocacy. She is the founder of Paper Trail Literary Journal and works as an editor, bringing visions to life and turning ideas into books. As the children’s author of Lilly the Llama Party Drama, Ekta hopes to inspire a new generation of children to use their imagination boldly. Her poetry collections, Made in Poetry, Twenty-Two, and Social Misfit, reflect her journey through life’s complexities and encourage readers to embrace who they are. Guided by kindness and humility, she uses storytelling to heal, empower, and champion young voices across South Africa. Ekta was named among Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans in 2022.

Made in Poetry by Ekta Somera pleasantly surprised me.



The book is divided into two parts: Part One: The Destruction and Part Two: The Renaissance with a total of a hundred and one poems. Ekta Somera draws her inspiration from life, family, love, art, and works of fiction. The central theme of the look is LOVE; self-love, and opening yourself to be loved by others.

I liked thirteen of the poems for their originality and sincerity. Three of my favorite poems:

I was called a puzzle because they couldn't figure me out
until, I hit the ground and my pieces fell perfectly into place
after the fall, that's when they looked in awe at the mosaic
mistaken for so long

When someone loves you, you will know. It will feel like all
the love you lost along the way has come back to you, the
same thing happens when you decide to love yourself.

i am my own home and love is my centrepiece

I am not proud of the person I used to be, but what is a
warrior without painful memories.

Each poem is poignantly crafted for reflection and contemplation underpinning philosophical anecdotes. The writing takes you on a journey from Destruction to Rennaisance with intelligent allegory.

On a personal level, I was transported to my own life's journey and some of the poems resurrected emotions buried from the past. Such elicitation is indicative of a poet that pricks at your heart and touches your soul.

An animated journey that nobody should miss through the eyes of the next generation of great poets.

Made in Poetry is an amazing little book of poetry which i am still working my way slowly through as each poem or set of poems requires time to process and reflect and wonder before moving on to the next one. Ekta has been super vulnerable in the sharing of these poems with us and the two-part journey of darkness and light is one where each person will find a place to land and resonate and drink in the words and images she uses. Would highly recommend this to people who love poetry and especially that which bares the soul!
