The Lady in Red: In for a Penny Book 2

Rate this book
Sometimes the living are more dangerous than the dead. When psychic tarot reader, Penny, receives tickets to a concert from her estranged dad, she finds herself dragged into another haunting. The ghost of a murdered showgirl is rumored to haunt a recently renovated old showboat. Penny doesn’t want to get involved, but her sister, Dora, is a huge fan of the rock star currently performing on the boat, and he wants Penny and her friends to uncover the truth before the spirits scare off his girlfriend.

Penny dreams about the mysterious lady in red, and the gang uncovers clues about her life. After a séance goes astray, Penny wants out, but it’s too late. A local casino owner with a personal interest in the supernatural threatens to hurt her dad if she doesn’t cooperate.

The murdered showgirl doesn’t seem to be the only entity haunting the old boat. The captain’s footsteps are still heard walking the deck and there are hints of a third presence. But even the ghosts may not be as deadly as a man with a mission, a woman scorned, and an inexplicable new ability given to Penny after the séance.

Will the gang defeat their antagonists, both living and dead, before an occult plot drags them into the dark?

The Lady in Red by Cathy Peper
In for a Penny Series Book Two
Penelope “Penny” and her sister, Pandora “Dora” Roberts, had quite an adventure recently. A ghost that was haunting Penny’s dreams had also invaded Dora’s body and was doing bad things. After that, Penny decided not to help her friend Ben, who was medium. Only, she just has to help him along with her boss, Gage, and Ben’s longtime friend, Juniper.
This adventure lands them on a showboat with more than one ghost. The flirty ghost who blew in Ben’s ear wasn’t so bad, but there were more ghosts and at least one very angry one.
Unfortunately, a very bad man pushes his way into the situation with threats. A page-turning adventure with a subtle hint of romance. I’m already looking forward to the next book the minute I finish one.

Supernatural Nancy Drew & crew.
The haunting of a river showboat. Dinner theater and ghosts on the side.
This is a second book in the series and is a standalone however they never stop talking about the events of book 1. I felt like the new kid in the group when everyone else is still talking about the kid who moved away. I felt out of the loop and a little ignored. I didn't feel like I was missing out on any key points to the story because of it, just character background.
The seance activity was very theatrical and overdramatic. I guess it would make for a good supernatural, b-movie, straight to streaming type flick. It's pretty tame to be considered horror or anything so they'd have to jazz that up a bit. But, still, I can see it.

Just an okay read for me.

The Lady in Red is a ghost living in the antiques steam boat at the river. This is a second ghost store with Penny, her sister Dora, and her other friends in her first story. The ghost action is consistent with the paranormal of the happenings, but this time the bad person is a living from a river casino who wants to learn from the ghost how to stay after he has died. The story is very interesting and the characters appear as the previous story. The suspense is more about the living person was than the dead. The writing is easy to read and enjoy. A little possible romance appears for Dora and Penny. It is a good book, but didn't seem great.

I enjoyed the main storyline, but just like the first time it seems like theirs random story lines thrown in that don't ever seem relevant to the plot or just filler for a couple of pages and never get readdressed. It also feels like it can't tell if it wants to be a soap opera with everyone's weird random personal drama, just a paranormal series, but also now could be fantasy. The writing style is difficult to get through as well.

The only thing that really kept me going is again the main story line was pretty good, and it was short enough I felt like I wasn't suffering too much to get to the reward of the wrap up.

Do you believe in ghosts? Whether you do or don't, this is a thrilling, exciting story for you. Communication with the other side of the veil, villain trying to capture a ghost, unrequited love, charismatic singer, ex-government agent with paranormal aptitudes, everything contributes to a fascinating book.
I wonder: is there something growing between Gage and Penny ... in the next book maybe?
Note to myself: I have to read the first book of the series.

This is a really enjoyable and gripping book. Follow Penny, her sister (Pan)Dora, Ben , Gage and Juniper as they battle the ghosts on an old showboat. Danger is around every corner from the ghosts, a man with a mission and a woman scorned. This book will keep you page turning as you will want to find out what happens next. Can’t wait to read the next book. I received an ARC and am leaving a completely unbiased, honest and voluntary review.

"Sometimes the living are more dangerous than the dead." The first line in Ms. Peper's blurb is perfect. She readies the reader for the story experience and it is a delightful story experience. It's a page-turner. Ms. Peper also gives some historical background for the book at the end which I enjoy immensely. My Favorite Color is Red
I recommend this book.

Enjoyable Read

I like how Penny and Dora grow throughout this story. I wish I had the full background on Dora's possession, since it is refuted to so much in this book. I will have to now go find book one to get the entire story.
