where is the recycle the book option because, WHAT ON EARTH HAVE I BEEN SPENDING THE PAST 4 DAYS READING??? this was one of my most anticipated reads because of the potential it held in their excerpts, but, ive never been so angry and disappointed and appalled in such a long time. Only not giving this book a 2 star because it was sweet at times and the FMC's 2 bestie plot lines made up for everything.
getting to the root of the problem, the author was so misogynistic, is she even a female? what kind of world does she think we are living in? the MMC gets praised for doing something like KEEPING A DISTANCE WITH OTHER GIRLS BECAUSE HE IS MARRIED. HELLO?? isn't this the bare minimum of what you would expect a decent guy to do? yet, the MMC is shamed for being 'so afraid of his wife' by other guys (thank god they are single) and the FMC is very very grateful for him doing it. there's so much more examples where the author does this. when he flies back in midst of a business trip because she was being attacked online thanks to relationships he didn't clean up properly (his ex and his 'brother'), when he 'protects' and 'defends' the FMC when his ex starts embarrassing her in public and so much more. to me, these things are merely the bare minimum but everyone seems to think so highly of the MMC just because he is doing this, esp the FMC, like,, just because he solved a problem that he caused, after it did you harm, doesn't mean he's suddenly the best person in the world again. another problem i have with this novel is consent. ik cnovels dont include the consent line because girls are apparently not supposed to show that they want it. BUT, there were so many moments here where the FMC explicitly said NO because she was tired or idk?? just didnt want to??? but it still happened anyways. like wtf?? hello??? the part that pissed me off the most was when she got 'punished' after she delivered because duh she was pregnant the last year thanks to who?? the MMC. it's so bizarre. he literally did not even ask the FMC if she wanted a child and stopped using condoms, just because he suddenly felt like having a child then. he even barred the FMC from leaving home, working, and doing virtually anything but sitting at home during majority of her pregnancy.
next one is the misogynistic world that this novel is based on. since the start, the MMC viewed the FMC as an object, rather, his object. Something that he just needs to spend a lot of money on, get designer bags, designer clothing, unlimited balance on the card to keep the marriage going. yea that was the case, since it was an arranged marriage anyways. but the problem came after they actually treated it like a normal marriage, because this was still the case. the MMC would literally ask his assistant to ask his staffs (the maid, the driver, etc) to report back on each and every one of her actions, and if he is not happy with any of them, he just bars her from leaving the house. and that's meant to be sweet??? hell nah. another one was the people around them. i have no clue why everyone was pressuring the FMC to have a baby at a young age of 25, she clearly stated that she thinks its too early but in everything that she did, everything that she shared out of happiness, her achievements, speaking up when she got bullied, the only response she got from her family is 'with this energy that you are putting in to all these irrelevant stuff, why not you just get pregnant and take care of your husband and your kids'. i was so shocked. aren't you supposed to be furious with the people who wronged her and defamed her? im sure that the last thing she wanted to hear after being so brave to speak up for herself is 'why did you say that online and ruin our family's reputation'. this is so horrible. another thing that really ticked me off was how women were held to such strict expectations and guys were held responsible for virtually nothing. the FMC was constantly shitting on her bestie for 'overeating' and by overeating, i mean eating cakes, and actual food, and the female characters were constantly seeking validation from their male counterparts if they were 'fat' or if they are 'skinny', like??? have you ever seen anyone hold a guy being held accountable for their body built or their weight? females were so heavily objectified in this novel. in their high school flashbacks, the MMC's roommates were openly discussing and comparing the body, the legs, the skirt length of their female juniors, hello!! they are all minors!! some parts were truly too disgusting to read, my annotations can definitely vouch for that.
the FMC's besties' plot lines were probably the most redeemable ones here. it truly showed how besties are the ones that actually care for the FMC and knows exactly what she needs. the MMC would drown her in jewellery and material goods but only her besties truly knows what she needs in that moment. they were right behind her back when anything happened. when the FMC wanted to file a divorce, one gave her all the money she had, and the other allowed her to crash at her place. Bestie 1 is truly the self made independent woman who only focuses on what's good for her own growth and development. she knew how hard she worked to get into the city and became the assistant head of one of the best fashion magazines in the nation, yet the only thing her family said to her despite all these achievements was bashing her for not dating, not marrying, and not bearing a child. how appalling. Im glad she remained single to the end and got promoted to the head of the magazine!! what a queen! Bestie 2 was initially the FMC's 'enemy', but because they were both girl's girl at heart, they became besties and she officially became her no.1 fan! in fact, i think bestie 2's bf easily beat the MMC in who's the better boyfriend. compared to the MMC who was constantly only waiting for the FMC to take action (what a princess), the bestie's bf took the initiative. he didn't make her guess, he immediately told her of his interest when she showed signs of confusion, he saved a seat for her when she came to listen to his lectures, compared to the MMC who still kept the FMC in the dark for quite some time and instead, was flaunting the fact that she liked him, but never making clear how he feels, making her always the one giving and initiating. gosh, one chapter easily defeated what the MMC did in 2 novels. there's just so much to go on, but i think ill stop here.
in conclusion, this novel had so so much potential but with an author like that, im not surprised of how disappointing this read was. the ceo, arranged marriage plot is everywhere so.. im sure i can find other good ones that uses this trope properly.
