Electric Midnight: Moth to Flame

Rate this book
From Andrew Post, author of Chop Shop, Switchboard, and Mondo Crimson, comes his next entry in horror-noir literature: Electric Midnight, a blood-soaked pulp fiction epic in six volumes.

No names. And don't get attached.

Detroit, 1999. When a mafia stash house is raided by a rival crime family, two hitmen are contracted. The first is assigned to find those who made off with the multi-million-dollar cache of drugs, cash, and guns. The second, hired by those behind the heist, is brought on for protection. One hitter, known locally as the hunter, works for the mafia to help pay for the private investigators looking for his twin sister's murderer. The other, the sick man, only works as a contract killer to help pay for the AIDS medication both he and his boyfriend desperately need. And though the hunter and the sick man may kill to earn a living, they might have the most integrity of anyone in this dying city.

Featuring a large cast of unsavory characters caught in a complex web of interconnected storylines rife with two-timers and psychopaths and hustlers, Electric Midnight is a violent and surreal serialized crime novel that may (or may not) take place in our reality.

Volume 2: Moth to Flame

The hunter gives the manager twenty-four hours to produce a name. The kid departs for her father's house and immediately finds herself in danger. The photographer is brought on by the detective, but the freelance shutterbug might have ulterior motives for taking snaps. The mouthbreather assists with finding a new target. The sick man tries angling for a bigger payday, receives mixed results. The lover receives portentous news from the ether. The cowpoke hires the skiptracer to assist with what the hunter is searching for. The lawyer has a decision to make.

Read my review of book one, Dog Eat Dog, here: https://aidenmerchant.com/2021/03/01/...

Book two, Moth to Flame, is just as engaging, busy, and anxiously paced as it's predecessor. The writing - which is quick and clipped like an action movie script - works perfectly for the story at play. Again, you have a variety of characters with interlocking paths battling one another and/or seeking similar things/people. It's a bit of a pulp fiction rat race at times. I've got to say, Post continues to impress with every new story of his I read. He's got a great mind for crime fiction, and manages to fit some tongue-and-cheek humor along the way. For the most part, though, this is a dark and violent series that could easily dominate the big screen through the eyes of Tarantino or Scorsese. I look forward to book three and the day all six entries are compiled in one compendium for me to re-read start to finish.
