Summer Flame

Rate this book
A young summertime romance that ended too soon. An unexpected reunion years later where it all began.

Maya’s Vacation To Do List:

-De-stress!!!
-Decide what’s next for my company
-Find my inner fire (wherever the hell it went)

Stressed out, overworked, and dealing with some...slightly embarrassing gastrointestinal issues, I reluctantly agree to take the vacation my family and friends insist I need. I’ll relax, recharge, and make some plans for the future of my company.

When the boy who charmed me at seventeen ends up at the same lakeside campground, grown-up Luka is just as charming now as he was then. Not that I have time for his swoon-worthy grins or that edible six-pack he keeps flashing when his shirt’s off. And his shirt is off. A lot.

At ten, he was my first kiss. Years later, he was my first something else.

Now? My old flame may be exactly what I need to kindle my inner spark again. One thing’s for sure - he can light my campfire anytime.

**Note: Summer Flame is Book 1 in the series, A Season’s Detour. It can be read as a standalone, but why wouldn’t you want to find out what happens to the rest of these awesome ladies?

Amazon bestselling author, Hayleigh Sol, believes love conquers all...

Eh, not so much.

In fact, I’ve always been a reluctant lover of romantic-comedies. The overly sappy ones just make my eyes roll; seriously, it’s like a reflex.

So, when I wrote my first book, what else would spill onto the page but a romantic-comedy with a lovably sassy female protagonist who was reluctant to give up her happy single life in exchange for a relationship?

I still write strong (even if they might not know it yet), independent heroines who don’t need a romantic relationship to be complete, and the sexy, sweet book boyfriends they find impossible to resist.

When I’m not writing or reading (my first true love), I’m hanging out with my own irresistible—I definitely tried to resist, let me tell you—book boyfriend turned hubby, who’s a big fan of “sweetie couch time”.

I know, cue the eye roll, right?

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

A beautiful story! And an inspiring one.

Who never wanted to be 17 again?
Be young, bold, daring, fall in love for the first time...
Maya has quite a settled life: she is a small business owner, works with her currently-on-break boyfriend Brad, whom at some point she wanted to marry, her life is full of stress and making tough decisions.
One day her Gram insists Maya takes a vacation at a campground they used to go to often in her childhood, a place filled with pleasant memories.
And, surprise, Maya decides to go.

Nothing was disliked while reading this book. So here is the list, why I loved it:

1. the writing. As always smooth, humorous, witty, and just generally flowing easily. Pure joy to read the book in one breath.

2. the story. "We found love in a hopeless place", sort of. In a way that Maya wasn't hoping for anything good to come out of her taking a vacation in the middle of an important work project. But love does find you in strange places sometimes.

3. the characters. I love the main characters. Maya is such a relatable heroine. And Luka is every girl's dream. Brad is an "I knew you were trouble" type of character. The first time I read about him I knew he was going to do something stupid. The rest of the characters are all well-written about and all of them convey an important message.

4. love scenes. There are not a lot of them, but they manage to show the chemistry and emotions between the main characters excellently.

5. Mays's story. It is truly inspiring and shows that people need support and someone to believe in them or remind them about that. In a stressful time that we live in it is easy to give in and give up, forget about your dreams and plans and just go with the flow. I'm so happy that Maya regained her strength and boldness, and showed everyone who's the boss.

I loved all the books I read by this author so far. And am already looking forward to reading more.

Also, I want to mention that I smiled a lot while reading this book! Maya and Luka are just too cute. And, in conclusion, we all need a Luka in our lives.

I loved the premise of this story! It’s a feel good, second chance romance with all the feels, witty dialogue and lots of passion. Everything you could want in a romance book and suddenly I want to go camping! The main character, Maya, finds herself stressed with the day to day operation of her environmental consulting business, Green for Green, and is realizing the stressors of owning a company are eroding her physical and mental health. Like a hamster on a wheel, she’s very indecisive about forming a business partnership with her ex, Brad. Brad, an experienced business owner himself would alleviate some of her responsibilities and allow her time to focus on her clients, leaving Brad to manage those mundane tasks that are surely driving her crazy. All while saving her business. Her family and friends, are quick to support her professional life but all agree she needs a little R&R. After stern consternation and self-doubt about leaving her workload behind, Maya finally agrees to leave Brad in charge and heads to the old family campground for a 2 week vacation for—mostly uninterrupted time away from work. Interestingly enough, fate places her in the right place at the right time and a handsome camper from her past helps guide Maya from stressed to spontaneous. I truly loved this story because the author clearly did her research on the environmental aspects and all the details make the story so believable for me. The characters are immensely wonderful, Maya’s growth is profound and I cannot wait to read the next season book from Ms. Sol!

This book is swoon worthy! The chemistry between Luka and Maya was top notch. I loved reading about their past too. Reading them as kids, awkward at first and then getting more comfortable, really lines the story up to feel the electricity between the two.

I appreciate Maya – she is overworked and overwhelmed. I’m overworked and overwhelmed too! Seriously though, Gram (her grandmother) has her back like no other family member. Not even her mother. Gram sees what she needs – a relaxing vacation. It’s so easy to see how much her Gram loves her. This book wonderfully depicted someone who needed support, someone who needed to believe in her and how much that can effect a person and the outcome of their circumstances. Maya’s boldness comes back after her trip and it was so nice to see. I really like her as a person.

The author’s writing is smooth, easy to read, and kept my interest piqued the entire time. I read this book really fast because it was just that good.

Romance book readers will love this book!

This was a really cute book! I can not tell a lie, Maya got on my nerves at the beginning...but she grew on me. I love her friendships from childhood she still holds on to and nurtures. Luka is the sweet boy from childhood summers at the lake. Their meet cute was super sweet and I loved following their love story. Luka took Maya out of her comfort zone and they balanced each other out so well. Really enjoyed Maya finally coming into her own. Pushing back on the people that keep her feeling less than. It is amazing the confidence love can give you. Loved it. I would recommend this one for sure!

Author Hayleigh Sol’s latest work is a fun summer escape into a modern day romance. The story is told from the lead character’s, Maya, point of view. The story revolves around the trials and tribulations of an overworked small female business owner and the conflicts of love, questionably intentioned exes, meddling but well-meaning family, lifelong friendships, lackluster employees and everything else life can throw at a person.
Maya forces herself to de-stress by going on a solo, two week camping trip to a mountain lake in Central California- a wonderful setting put to words. The place holds special childhood memories, especially those involving a fun ten year old boy, Luka, she befriended who became her first in her teenage years. It was not love per se, nor was it bittersweet but a tender time between two innocent kids on their way into adulthood.
When Maya nonchalantly ogles a nearby camper’s very fine physique, she discovers a few days later that none other than Luka is close by. It isn’t insta-love, she thinks maybe a possible fling, none the less it is Maya’s second chance to rekindle her first romance.
I really enjoyed ¬¬Summer Flame. What is not to love about a two week vacation with “the boy of summer” past. The author did an excellent job of creating chemistry, emotion, conflict, laughter and making the story believable. The annoying characters were meant to annoy you, and the lovable characters were relatable. The end was satisfying and as the book introduces the reader to Maya’s friends and is to be a future series, I’m sure we’ll be seeing Maya and Luka in the future.
Highly recommend it for a summer or vacation read, or to remedy cabin fever.

Maya is stressed out in life, in her own words: "I felt timid and incapable, like every choice I made - with my company and my life - was the wrong one or, at least, not the best one. Sick of myself but not knowing how to make anything better." This is the backdrop to which we meet Maya - a struggling thirty-something trying to save her company.
It looks like she needs a fresh break! A vacation, and maybe, a little fling to get her mind off her troubles. It turns out Maya's fling is, well, a very old flame. How these two interact because of their previous history made their current encounter so much deeper and meaningful. There was no cliche "fall in love at first sight, or accidentally bump into someone and kiss," in this story, and I found the love scenes steamy enough without having to be gratuitous - other romance novelists please take note!
I found myself genuinely liking Maya, she was quirky and smart, yet full of insecurities in which we see her slowly overcome in her growth throughout the story. I loved the author's writing style in her previous book, and it only improved with this one. It is SO easy to read, and never gets bogged down by clunky sentences trying to overly describe things.
There is a buildup between Maya and her ex (Brad), who in a way, is the antagonist of the story. By the time Maya has her final showdown at the end, I challenge you not to be smiling in triumph.
Final thought: I like the way this book has been released in the summer, about a summer vacation, in order to for the main character to release stress because I think that is exactly what the author has intended for us readers with this novel!

3.5 stars.. Not what I would consider a romantic comedy, but a cute love story about Maya's first kiss and first time with Luka coming to mind when she meets him again. Maya is a bit of a stressed-out worry wart, but I admire her starting and running her own business. The stress and health issues were emphasized a bit much, but it was realistic and understandable. Maya's ex-boyfriend, Brad was annoying, but often it's tough to see the reality of a smooth, handsome man.

Now, Luka, he is why I rounded up to 4 stars. He is too good to be true and their vacation fling is more than what the doctor ordered. But who wouldn't want a gorgeous, sexy, successful man who is hot for your body and admires your brains, success and ambition. The setting of the nostalgic lake was idyllic and memory filled.

Another reason that I rounded this review up to 4 stars is the attraction between Maya and Luka and the discreet sex scenes. I felt the lust and romance between them, but didn't hear every gory detail. I thought this sexual aspect of the story was very tastefully done.

My biggest problem was

Hayleigh Sol has written a home run story that the reader will enjoy from first to last page.
In the story our heroine Maya, has the unenviable job of running her eco-friendly company and trying to keep her failing love life afloat. When her overly possessive mother strongly suggests she take a camping trip to recharge her batteries, Maya relents and reluctantly agrees to go. While camping she runs into an old friend from her past named Luka. With his help she manages to overcome many of her self doubts. With the passion relit in her life and her batteries recharged (several glorious times) she is ready to reclaim her company from a scheming partner/ ex-boyfriend.
Ms. Sol’s book is charming, fun with many twists that will keep the reader guessing. I enjoy her writing style and can’t wait for her next

Ms. Sol creates this perfectly realistic setting that draws the reader right into her world. Her characters are as genuine and flawed as they are endearing. There's a lot more going on than a rekindling of a childhood crush. There's tremendous character growth. This story is a journey about love, resilience and personal triumph. It's a quick read because of turning pages in a hurry. Just as Hayleigh Sol's previous books have made my list of must-reads, Summer Flame has a spot on my shelf.

A good story about a much stressed-out female business owner and her journey in finding where she really needs to take her life and business. Maya thankfully takes a much-needed respite thanks to a very special person in her life and it couldn't come at a better time. When her business is in serious jeopardy of making or breaking it, she finds herself back in familiar territory with a person who brings out the best in her and a location that brings her peace. Luka is loving, exciting and just what Maya needs to spark that fire again within and make the difficult decisions ahead. I trusted Brad as much as I could probably throw him, which isn't any distance, and I knew as I read that I had good reason to. This story makes you feel for the characters...Maya with her pickle of an ex-boyfriend business partner with a blossoming new love beginning and Luka who probably feels he is more of a third wheel with Maya's ex still hanging around. This makes for a complicated mix of doing what she thinks is right while not losing what she's now gained. I'm glad things worked out the way they did and just desserts were served in the end. I love the mixture of past experiences and friendships and how they were woven into Maya's present-day life. It's nice to read a story of a business owner trying to succeed on her own and the struggles, doubt and triumphs that come with pursuing your own small business. I would definitely read more from this author.

This book was nice story about a woman named Maya that met Luka as a young girl while camping with her family one summer when she was 10 years old. She spent time again with him another summer when she was 17.
She went to college and started a business and ran into him again as a 32 year old woman.
I typically like this trope, but Maya did not meet Luka again until Chapter 10! The beginning of the book was a lot of information about how Maya’s ex-boyfriend was a jerk and the struggles of her company.
I was glad she didn’t end up with her ex, but it went on and on about him, that I almost gave up on her meeting a good guy.
There was so much angst built up regarding her business and previous boyfriend and then that storyline just kind of came to a screeching halt and the book ended.
I was left turning the pages and asking myself if I hadn’t received the full book because it didn’t really have an ending. It just ended.
I did like the reunion and developing relationship between the H and h—their slow burn, sweet romance, and friendly banter is the reason I kept reading.
This is the first book I have read by this author, and I do enjoy her writing style ,so I would read another book of hers.

Maya owns a struggling eco-environment company. Her ex-boyfriend Brad wants to loan her money in turn for part ownership of the company and help her manage the employees. Her health is struggling with the stress. Her grandma tells her she needs a vacation and makes a reservation at the campground they used to go to growing up. Reluctantly she goes camping and to her surprise the boy who gave ten year old Maya her first kiss is at the same campground. Only now he has a charming smile and six pack abs. Luka ignites her inner spark in so many ways.

SUMMER FLAME is a second chance romance that is told at a steady pace. Maya's overbearing mother didn't believe in Maya or her business venture and wanted Brad to run the company. Brad was a narcissist jerk and I knew right away she should drop Brad like a hot potato. He was nothing but bad news. The romance between Maya and Luka develops slowly. His best quality is that he believed in Maya and gave her the confidence she needed. Maya's five friends since elementary school added fun to the story. This book is the first in A Season's Detour Series and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.

Summer Flame by Hayleigh Sol is a delightful romantic tale that will warm your heart and bring a smile to your face. It has everything romance readers are looking for and so much more.

Our heroine is Maya, and she is planning on a stress-free vacation where she can unwind after spending so many years building her company, relax and let her worries float away. She is at a junction in her life. Having given so much of herself to her business, she finds herself lost and feeling empty. While other things in her life are working well, her love life is complicated.

Then into her life walks her ex! Their steamy romance aside, this situation offers Maya the opportunity to find her confidence and find a sense of assurance needed to reinstate her drive and passion.

Will the funny, smart Maya find true love in the arms of her past boyfriend? There are no spoilers in this review. But it is worth noting that our protagonist is a great role model. She is the type of person we all need on our friend list. She has issues, isn’t perfect, but she adapts and learns.

This is a great story that many readers will enjoy because it offers so much more than the usual romance book tropes. Read, enjoy and get the rest of the series. You won’t be disappointed.

More than just a beach read, Summer Flame is like that unexpected fling that catches you off guard. Maya's transformation from burnt-out boss babe to a woman rediscovering her spark is so real that you'll want to high-five her (or maybe buy her a margarita).
Luka is not your typical romance hero. He's the kind of guy who shows up like that perfect playlist you didn't know you needed—supportive, intriguing, and with just enough mystery to keep you hooked. Their slow-burn chemistry makes you want to believe in second chances again.
Maya's journey isn't some glossy, unrealistic makeover. Her struggles could be your best friend's - messy, complicated, but ultimately triumphant. And Brad, her ex? You'll want to throw something at him, which means the author nailed the love-to-hate character.
This book is your summer escape: part therapy session, part romantic adventure, all heart. Whether sunbathing or hiding from reality, Summer Flame is a refreshing read, a fabulous tale of second chances, self-discovery, and holiday vibes with just the right amount of nostalgia and sizzling chemistry!

This book gave me anxiety, but the good kind. The kind you get when your whole life it on the cusp of some much needed change. Maya's journey to self-actualization, professional fulfillment, and true love was filled with angst, comedy, and questions about life choices.
The characters were well-developed and authentic. Maya was a frustrating character at times, but that's what made her relatable, and her growth by the end made up for it. Luca was the perfect love interest (let's admit it, for all of us), and Brad had no real redeeming qualities beneath his manipulative ways.
The romance between Maya and Luca was sweet and at times sultry. No explicit sex scenes, but that's what our imagination is for! It was the perfect mix of sexual and emotional chemistry.
This is the second book from Hayleigh that I've read and I'm a forever fan. She has exceptional writing talent and can immediately pull readers in from the very first page. In her novels, we root for the MC and learn a few life lessons on the way. Highly recommend all of Hayleigh's work!

Maya is a young entrepreneur with a company about green sustainability, but when her work problems are starting to affect her stress levels, she decides to take a vacation and go to Brass Lake, the campsite where she used to stay with her grandparents during her childhood and teenage years. Fifteen years later Maya reconnects with Luka, her childhood friend and first crush.

Maya and Luka became a couple, a very cute one with great chemistry. I loved their summer plans: beach going, stargazing, hiking in national parks. I was transported to long summer days. It was also very fun to meet Maya's friends, they all seen great and I want to know more about them.

I loved this slow burn romance, the first of the Detour Series and now I can't wait to read all the books in this series.

Small business owner Maya is stressed out running her consulting service Green for Green. Her ex-boyfriend Brad has offered to help her with making business decisions but she is reluctant to give up that much control and as it turns out, with good reason... Her mom is driving her crazy and her gram is always there for her. Something has to give and with her doctor telling her she needs to do something about her stress, she finally decides to take a 2 week camping trip by herself. While there, she meets up with a her first love from the past Lukasz whom she met while they camping as teenagers and she and Luka rekindle their friendship.

I would recommend this book to all the young lovers out there trying to make it in today’s world. Hang on, it’s a bumpy ride but you will get there.

A perfect summer read whether you're at the beach, in the mountains, camping at the lake or at home with engaging characters you want to know and a humorous, touching and steamy story that immediately pulled me in and kept me totally involved in all that was happening until I read the last word. So, this read took me a bit to get into. While an overall well written romance it didn't captivate me. Our main character is Maya who is a struggling business owner and full of self doubt. I think that was the biggest problem for me was in the book she kept going back and forth about being a sting, independent woman and then doubting herself and letting others manipulate her. I did love the dynamic between her and her friends as well as the reconnection to her childhood vacation companion. In the end, alls well that ends well and if the author is going to make a series from the best friends I hope to get updates on Maya, her business and new/old love.

A workaholic consumed with stress takes a vacation, allowing her to reconnect with the past.

With the first installment in A Season’s Detour series, author Hayleigh Sol serves up a romantic comedy in Summer Flame.

Maya is struggling to keep her environmentally conscious company afloat, which means working long hours. With her former boyfriend itching to take over and secretly plotting against her, the future looks uncertain.

A surprise vacation sends Maya back to her beloved Bass Lake, where she reconnects with Luka. She gets a new perspective that finally alleviates her stress.

"Summer Flame" had all the makings of a great romance: first kiss reemerges years later on a much-needed vacation at the site of previous family summer camping trips.

However, the pages and pages of work stress really harshed the summer love buzz. I loved her job and entrepreneur heart, it just could have been half of what it was to contribute to the story in a balanced way.

There were times I almost DNF, but the chemistry was so good I stuck it out. I would gladly try another by Sol, though– the romance was sizzling!

Fun Summer Vacation!

This was a fun summer break and camping trip with a trip to summer boyfriends past! I would have given it 5 stars since it was well-written and kept me reading but I just couldn't respect Maya...On one hand she could go camping alone, stand up to her mother, start and run her own company but on the other hand she didn't have the confidence to stand up to her Ex (who I really hated and was supposed to!) when he was manipulating her and she knew the right thing to do for her business! I found her to be quite frustrating. I did really like her friends and their support of her and am looking forward to their stories.

3 stars. I was not happy with the insecure, self-effacing heroine. Owned her own successful business for 10 years, yet she still cared about other people’s opinions? How she could trust the obviously lying ex-boyfriend was a mystery to me. Cringe-worthy. And her relationship with her mother was painful. Why did she not tell her parents she was back with Luka?

Then she goes camping for two weeks in a stinky old nasty tent? I don’t understand why she did not have a state-of-the-art tent. 2 weeks?!? And so much sex on blow up mattresses? I wish we could have seen more of her faithful assistant Evan.

I got this book at no charge from Booksirens and the author, but all opinions are my own.

Everything is better at the lake and this book is proof positive. Maya reunites with Luka, her first everything. Their adventures take on a life of their own. Could he be the what's missing in her life? It can't be so transparent can it? Let's throw in Brad for an interesting subplot. A good dose of amazing friends staying in touch added another layer of craziness to the story. The character growth of our main character, Maya, was amazing - from doormat to finding her voice and strength made for great reading. Admittedly, I was ready to scream at her utter lack of confidence in the beginning. Wake up, buttercup! In the end, all is well and I enjoyed the book.

As much as this book has all the hallmarks of a romance novel, this book was really about our heroine finding herself. After spending ten years building her company and dealing with all the highs, lows and burn out that comes with that, Maya goes on a 2 week vacation. Who she meets on the vacation is certainly a large part of the book but more than that, she rediscovers her passion and her confidence.

A lovely holiday read. Thank you for the opportunity to review this ARC.

Fun, quick read. Over worked and stressed Maya gives into taking a vacation where her family always went, with wonderful consequences. I had some frustration with Maya’s insecurity with her ex. She seemed so much stronger! Great strong girlfriend characters and of course yummy Luka. Definitely want to read the next book.

Good happy ending

This was not my cup of tea. I am so frustrated by female characters who lack self confidence needing a betrayal by a man in their life to take a stand and take responsibility for their own lives. There was actually dry little romance in this story. Most of the book was about Maya’s stress and inability to be honest with herself about it.
