I was part of the original contributor group for this cookbook and i have so much appreciation and affection for the Hippycore Krew - the editors, Jack and Joel, and all who contributed and worked on it. It's the grandmother of all punk cookbooks - the real deal. Everyone in it meant everything they said - about the music, the food, everything. We lost Joel Olson this year, too young, and we are putting together a brand new volume 2 of Soy Not Oi - updated to reflect our cooking and our lives - to benefit his wife and kids. I urge you to keep an eye out for it, or follow us on Facebook or Twitter. This one will be the bomb - well over 100 new lovely recipes designed to destroy the corporate transnational capitalist-industrialist food system and excite your palate and your ears to boot!

perhaps the most endearing vegan cookbook ever made, it tells you how to make a killer sloppy joe while listening to econochrist, and offers personal anecdotes from the contributors as to why they decided to go vegan. good to read whenever you find yourself bored on food and need some straightforward ideas. plus i think it cost maybe $7. so good.

A real time capsule, a pleasure to read the included essays and peruse the recipes. I'll be using some of them in the future. Oi! Oi! Oi!

I found veganism through punk rock, so this little photocopied anarchist cookbook with the silly drawings and crust/anarcho music recommendations will always be near and dear to my heart. It's been 10 years since I first picked this up at a show and it's probably been 8+ years since I actually cracked it open (and the pages are probably stuck together by now with pancake batter or something), but it used to get a lot of rotation in my early vegan years. An accessible vegan cooking primer for young, bright-eyed, broke punks, and maybe even still a recipe or two for an "old fart" in her late-20's like me.

BEST COOK BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My copy is very worn out I've had it for almost ten years now and I still use it often.

All the food is Vegan, but the carnivores can't tell the difference anyway.

I've served numerous recipes from this cookbook and while not all of them are smash hits some are really out of this world.

It shows even the most novice and aspiring cook to not be afraid of the kitchen. Highly recommended regardless of your experience in the kitchen.

i love this cookbook. its full of my favourite kind of diy recipes, where some recipes dont include measurements on most stuff so you kinda gotta feel around and taste as you go, and it turns out awesome every time.
i love the info in it, and how people wrote about why they decided to follow a vegan diet, and the music recommendations for each recipe too!
its also good for low-budget vegan cookin'
all around favourite vegan cookbook zine

I have to admit that I haven't cooked many recipes out of this book, and I'm not even vegan. But I do like to have cookbooks full of delicous vegan recipes on hand.

This is a vegan/punk/anarchist classic.

My version is of the old school zine variety, not bound so much as held together with a staple.

No way, the Hippycore crew's cookbook is on the loose? That rocks. Ready for a good laugh? Then check this out and learn to deconstruct new recipes and your old favorites in a laidback manner. Variety is the spice of life on your tongue and in your belly. Even learn to make beer and stick it to the man at the same time.

Good for anyone, but especially young people- I still have hope for you! Really funny, inspiring sometimes, dumb sometimes, but always entertaining. For those who like politics and punk references sprinkled through their cookbooks. (Now you can buy a BOUND version, but back in the day it was just a zine you could only find at anarchist bookstores and the like.

I read/bought this book 16 years ago at a warped tour in Los Angeles. It was my first vegan cookbook and I'll fondly look back on it forever. It was a great introduction to vegan cooking because we had so many more options out there. The recipes aren't fantastic but they work. The drawing and descriptions are great though!

The classic punk cookbook, complete with punk-referencing names, homebrewing instruction, and hand drawn art. The foremother of punk cookbooks is totally fun, but I can't remember a single recipe....
I'll have to scare up a copy someday.

To be honest, I don't really ever even use this cookbook, but I love it in theory. So endearing.

I tried to find a copy of Bark n Grass to put up here as well. These two zines effectively put a sharp end to relying on freaking fantastic food products to be vegan...

This book is mentioned in the 1/3/2008 NYT article on the book "Punk House," which also sounds kind of interesting.
