Do they get sleep? Or does sleep get them? After discovering a new garden world to call home for Earth's last survivors, Commander Elsa Venla finds her work isn’t done. The colonists are exposed to an unknown contagion which steals their minds as they sleep. They grow paranoid, aggressive, animalistic. Bitey.
Venla isn’t immune. She starts to suspect her own crew is complicit in corrupting the colonization effort. This contagion isn't at all what it seems. Now she must use whatever tools available to wrest control of her people back and prevent this sickness from spreading to the stars…
Ryan grew up reading and watching Fantasy and Science Fiction from a young age. A lifelong fan of the genres, he wanted to bring his own unique twist to the stories told today.
Ryan is a graduate of the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology. He currently resides in Colorado Springs with his wife and four dogs.
He enjoys the great outdoors and still finds passion in reading stories of fantasy. He is constantly looking outward from Earth and wondering what the future will bring.
He hopes that his stories can inspire new space exploration while spreading cheer and hope for the future. He is particularly optimistic that those struggling in life can find a temporary escape inside his stories while igniting new joy and inspiration.
Ryan aspires to be a friend to all and show his support to everyone. He wants his books to help others beat their darkest enemies.
The world-building was excellent as seen from the very beginning where five colony ships were preparing for their historic departure as the viewers held their breaths in anticipation. It really did feel like the reader was right there among them all.
Now we face the excitement of the discovery of a new world to settle on for Earth's last survivors. But instead of a new beginning, exposure to an unknown contagion strikes the colonists and steals their minds while they sleep. Symptoms of paranoia, aggression, and animalistic biting behavior show up. Commander Elsa Venla must now fight the spread of this contagion while noticing that she is not immune either.
Venla suspects her own crew is trying to sabotage the colonization effort. Or is this simply the paranoia that the sickness brings on? What is real? What is true? Or are things not what they seem now? Whatever she does, she must make sure this does not spread out to the rest of the universe! But how will she know if she is doing the right thing?
The story line was fast-paced and well-written, keeping the reader on edge and engaged. Zombies are not usually on my reading list, but this book slipped in and it was done well -- (oh no, I almost said “tastefully”, gag!). Grab your copy and see if the colonization effort can be saved, or was it doomed from the start?
This is the second instalment of Earth's Last Ships and follows the Phoenix this time. Once again, the crew lands on a foreign planet, but what awaits them there is surprise after surprise, some pleasant, many not. This was quite a compelling read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The adventures of the ships remind me of the Star Trek series, though each book deals with a different ship and crew. The mix of fantasy and Sci Fi is quite enjoyable, and the characters are quite good.
