This is probably my favourite of the series so far. We left Steven and his ship dying, hidden away on a hostile planet and the crew at the mercy of an Alien Princess. Stuck in the middle of imperial space, they face some hard choices and a long lonely road home. The choices that Charlie makes can either make or break their attempt at escape. Home on Earth tension rises as the crews go weeks then months without any communication. In the Federation, The Grand Commander is becoming frantic with the loss of his new ship designer while Jean Wilson finds herself on the bridge of a new fleet carrier. To her horror, she discovers that it has been designed by the man whose heart she broke just months before. The struggle for survival and to get home takes many turns and twists. The Empire has technology capable of detecting the ships even when cloaked and vast resources at its disposal. When a data mining expert and a crew of trained assassins are put on their trail, their chances of surviving become slimmer.
Can you have too much of a good thing? That is my first thought writing this review. I really enjoyed the first 3-4 books in this series but with each subsequent volume, my enthusiasm has slowly started to wane. First up this is not in any way due to the author, the quality of writing if anything has improved, as has the complexity of plotting, as well as character development.
I've just found it harder and harder to stick with the books. The first few I read in days, this one has taken two months of dipping in and out of it. I can find no faults hence the 4-star rating, but I seem to have lost interest for whatever reason. I've got two more volumes to read, but when I'll pick them up again I don't know, maybe a break is required.
A good book in the series, just didn't click with me.
All they had to do in the first half of the book is teleport the suppliers and leave some gold behind as compensation, insted it was one dumb idea after another. They even built a sheep that could catch theirs and then gave the schematics to the enemy just so they could pass an inspection.? How thoes that make any sense? They could have built an average inconspicuous ship and avoided all the drama. It's like the smartest person there tuned into a moody teenager. Pure uninspired BS.
First off they are still highly entertaining books, nothing takes anything away from that. However the last 2 or 3 books have been little about Steven and a lot about Charlie The problem with Charlie is, he is just too perfect. He is smarter than everyone, stronger than everyone and to top it all has the support of virtually everyone. It makes all of his adventures a tad too predetermined
Very much enjoying this series and 'Fugitives' was great. I enjoy the characters, the journey, the ups, the downs, simply a great read to escape for a little while. Each book in the series gets better and better. Highly recommend that you start this series and continue on this journey with the Author.
Think that says it all, this one is as good or better than the rest of this series, cant wait for the next one or one of his others. wish he could write quicker!
I am actually jealous of new to this series readers who have nine books of reading. This story is of a genius and a salty soldier who are childhood friends taking on the galaxy of alien people.
I don’t dislike this book. It’s a very good read. It keeps you entertaining, but you have to start at the beginning of the series. This is the last book in this series. I hope there’s more to come.
This is why I read all the books from a author even if I was a little bored buy the last two. This is amazing read hope the next one follows along the lines of this one.
I enjoyed the story, which had lots going on from beginning to end. I’m still not sure about the way the author portrays women/females, but I have given four stars.
