The Dark Kings #10

The Goblin King

Rate this book
The Goblin King, also affectionally known as phlegm, has a problem. A big one. Kingdom is a land built on magick, fairy tales, and happily ever afters. But who wants a man with puke green skin as their partner? No one, that's who. Not even in Kingdom and so he sets out to find himself in a place called Earth where he can be normal for once. Just one catch, Phelgm is discovering maybe the definition of normal isn't normal at all. Especially when his cute neighbor greets him with a warm smile and laughing brown eyes. His very tall, very broad shouldered, and very masculine neighbor Joon.

Picked this up as a freebie, hadn't realised it was a YA series. Not my thing.
Was expecting quirky meet-cute with fantasy elements, but this is very young, starry eyed, gushy.

The meet the cute neighbour scene mentioned in the blurb? That's at around 25% at the book's start Phe/Phlegm/Jerrick is 5 years old. FIVE. The alternating chapter is his mother's pov! Also he [Phe/Jerrick] is the big broad one, Joon is a silver haired fainting K-pop star. It's all very ....young. The characters and the writing.

Found the side characters felt off, sudden friendships, bffs. Gushing fangirling. At 20% it felt like someone had pointed this out to the author and a heavily traumatic past was dropped on a character to, explain her? Heavy stuff and just left there, that's said, now move on.

Jerrick with a childhood of being bullied and super low self esteem is inconsistent. When his crush tells him he could be a model he's all casual 'well yeah, I guess' um... And inviting himself to dinner, telling Joon on third meeting to cook for him? That goes beyond sudden confidence into rude, don't care whose advice it was, to me it's not cute it's warning signs.
But no, it's all transcendental, pretty colours, love that's meant to be, with a touch of magical interference from mummy - Baba Yaga.

I really didn't like it, skimmed to 40% and could take no more. If you like YA and K-pop maybe it'll work for you. I'm not a fan of either so no thanks.

3.5*

I was pleasantly surprised by this free ebook, brought to my attention by Bookbub.

I liked the amount of paranormal and glamour/spotlight, the soulmate/true love connection and deities/myths interwoven in the story. I only wished the author had done a little more with the synesthesia of Yoon except from making it possible to recognize Jerrick anywhere in a crowd. I find it a intriguing concept, seeing burst of colors with certain emotions, sounds or other perceptions and be able to identify people on a different level.

Was this book ridiculous? Absolutely. But I still devoured it in one day. It read like a very entertaining goblin-kpop slash fiction very clearly written by a woman. Just don’t look at it too deeply and enjoy the ride.

Took a star off for some accidental name swaps and typos in the novel.

Torn on this one...

2.5 stars
This is the first book I've read by Jovee Winters. I liked the story and the characters. It was a sweet love story. And although I have not read any of the previous books in this series, I didn't ever feel lost in the story. Jovee is a great storyteller. Sadly, that's where my positive comments end.

This book has a massive amount of errors. Massive. It's a shame, because a few proofreaders or an editor would have made a huge difference. The grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure is so, so bad: missing words, misspelling a character name and using the wrong character name altogether, wrong word tense, comma misuse galore, duplicate words, apostrophe misuse, misused words, odd word choices that sounded straight from a thesaurus, etc. The list just goes on. I don't expect every author to be an English major, but if you're going to charge money for your work, have enough pride in your work and respect of your readers to deliver a better product. While I enjoyed the story overall, I won't be reading another by this author.

My review sounds harsh, but it's factual and I wanted to be honest. I read a few reviews before starting this book, and not one mentioned how bad the actual writing is. So I feel like I'm one of the few writing an honest review for whatever reason.

This fantastical, heartfelt story was up there, in my opinion, with Dite and Hephy's story, which was my favorite book in the series. Yes, this is M/M but the bigger truth is that love should always transcend this one designation (and every other) and Jovee Winters characterizes this well. She also adds in some other sticky issues such as Jerrick's goblin status (which could be a fairytale version of race) and, with Joon, this story becomes a truly multiracial fairytale story.

Jerrick, in a prior book, had become a baby after defeat as the evil goblin king. As he grew up in Kingdom, he was bullied and it was a horrible existence. The Witch, Baba, and her love, Frey, take Jerrick to Earth to give him a fighting chance to not become the evil king again. Throw in some fated mates, a bit of a nod to a cultural sensation (K-Pop!) and some really awesome supportive characters (and some pretty awful ones- as in Joon's parents) and you have a well rounded, fun but yet poignant and beautiful story. I teared up for these two characters multiple times as moved towards their hard earned HEA and of course, cheered when they finally achieved it (hey, this is Kingdom, after all). Absolutely looking forward to the next one!

I enjoyed this book.

I has a young adult fell to it with fantasy elements. Jerrick "Phe" is the reincarnation of the Goblin King being raised by Baba Yaga and a Norse fertility god. They shower him with love and kindness but other kids can be cruel, even in the Kingdom. Jerrick hates the color of his skin and feels unworthy of love due to his past mistakes. His family moves to the human world for a better life for Jerrick and he finally makes friends that will he have for the rest of his life. He is heavily influenced by Babe to get interested in K-pop, specifically to band Animus. He is instantly attracted to Joon.

Joon has it all, fame and fortune with millions of adoring fans but he only wants freedom to decide his life and love. He and Jerrick met when they where children and Jerrick's starry eyes have always been a mused for Joon. Joon finally runs away from his commitments and life to live simply and to do what he wants to do, which is to paint.

Joon moves into the same building Jerrick lives in and they literally bump into each other while Joon is moving in. There is an immediate spark, it's always been their. Jerrick just has to open up to Joon and tell him his truth for them to have a happy ending.

Really liked this story. Even though it's a part 10 and other characters are mentioned I didn't feel like I was missing part of the story. Could be a standalone.

A different kind of Happily Ever After, but still extraordinary.

When Phlegm was born, none could've known he would have such a miraculous life. Once King of the Goblins, one of the the most feared beings in Kingdom, he grows into a remarkable man. After being ridiculed and humiliated as a child, Baba Yaga takes him to earth to live which helps keep him from becoming the evil King of his past. Unknown to Jerrick, he meets his soulmate as a child but because of their journey they won't know it until much later. When they do meet, sparks fly. Jerrick's Happily Ever After transforms his and his lovers life forever. In this story the curse didn't impact him the way it has with others. But because the change in Baba Yaga's future, it ensures Jerrick's life will forever be altered. But it's in a good way. This is an exceptional fairytale, a for sure must read.

Goblin King (The Dark Kings Book 10)

An utterly charming love story about people being who they are meant to be and with whom they are meant to be.
Jerrick, the titular Goblin King and Park Min Joon a K-pop band member become soulmates when they first meet as children, only spending 30 minutes together,
not re-meeting until over more than a decade later yet both profoundly affected by that initial meeting.
The story has plenty of mythological characters who are seen in a different and fresh light from the way they are usually presented.
This is the first of Jovee Winters’ Dark Kings books that I’ve read but I enjoyed it enough to make me want to check out the other books in the series.

Wow! This one really didn’t work for me. It just seemed to be all over the place and too much at once. I never quite warmed up to the characters. Jerrick and Joon each spent way too much time in their own heads, overthinking everything, and I never really felt the connection between them.
The writing itself I found to be problemmatic. Did anybody really proofread this before it was published? Spelling errors, mixed up names, timeline inconsistencies, and other errors were abundant throughout. But the final straw for me was the introduction of mpreg at the end. I read the other reviews before taking a chance with this, but if even one had mentioned the mpreg part, I would not have bothered with this at all.

I discovered this because there was a deal on. I didn't realise it was part of a much larger series. It just sounded like my thing. Luckily, I understood everything and didn't feel confused from things in previous books. I enjoyed it. It's got a lovey dovey feel and is a light hearted easy read. I do think there was quite a few spelling and grammar mistakes, though. I also probably would want more fantasy elements and the friends involved more. But I always love the idea of two worlds living alongside each other like this.

Absolutely stunning read!!

For this being your first try on same sex loves this story knocks it out of the park!! It has officially become my favorite book in the whole kingdom series. Joon and Jerrick just make my heart smile and their romance is on part with every book in the series. I love how you still kept the curse in the story but it wasn't the main focus as in other books, relevant without becoming a main point. Kudos on a job well done!

I've read all the Dark Queens/Kings series and the earlier stories and I was excited to see an lgbt story. Unfortunately this book just didn't hit the romance meter as well as the previous books. I also found Joon irritating more than anything and was more invested in Babe than the other characters. It was an ok read but is not even close in quality as the rest of the series. That said I await 'The Flower Queen' with enthusiasm

A wonderful tale of discovery and love

Really enjoyed this tale...A journey of discovery, with a little help from family. Both grew up with a less than ideal childhood, and as adults things weren't much better...until they finally found each other again. Learning to trust each other will be hardest to they do but the fight will be worth it! Beautifully written with a wonderful mix of worlds and characters.

Broke my book slump

I have been waiting for this book since the sneak peek we were given in Jovee's author group. I could not put this book down. I love that the author really knew so much about k-pop and really made this M/M romance so steamy without being graphic. This book was the best kind of steamy and relatable.

Absolutely wonderful

Jovee winters successfully navigated the m/m plot in this book while at the same time keeping all of the essence that makes Kingdom my favorite escape. This is one of those books I own in digital form and still will purchase a hardcopy once it comes out.

A very different love story

I love this book!! What a wonderful different love story. I was enchanted from the beginning and fell in love with the characters. I am hoping there might be more from Baba Yaga and her family.

I liked the premise of the story but did not like the underdeveloped characters and the many missing words or grammatical errors. It just feels like it is a promising first draft that needs some more editing/rewriting.

This was fun, although the pacing was clumsy and an enormous amount of time was spent trying to justify what amounted to insta-love. I cannot imagine bothering with the rest of the series, but this one was cute.

This was mostly boring. I haven't read any of the other books of the series, though I know they're somewhat standalone, and it was pretty confusing to have the difference from what I remember of the original Kingdom books. Plus the two characters were very flat.

Fascinating

A new take on some fairy tales. I haven't read much about the goblin king and I enjoyed this version. It gives a different look at a lot of the pantheons as well. A good read. I'm looking forward to reading more.

Transported back to Kingdom. I’ve never read m/m before and I wasn’t sure, but Jovee handled the scenes with sensitivity.
I absolutely loved Jerrick and Joon.
