It just didn't maintain my interest. very shallow characters and the storyline wasn't that interesting.

Aimed squarely at a younger audience, but fun for adults too, this opening entry in a new quest fantasy series is a world away from George RR Martin. It’s an instantly engaging tale that (unlike Martin’s complex adult epics) doesn’t swamp you with a gazillion different characters; the focus throughout is on Kayden the young protagonist, and the colourful supporting cast is mercifully manageable. The story too is relatively straightforward, a return to a traditional quest structure with a clear goal for Kayden to achieve, and it’s all the more compelling for that. You can race through it in a single day, as I did, and find yourself completely transported!

Two minor gripes: Some of the prose and dialogue could use a little more polish. Also, at the end, while it’s clear that Kayden’s journey is far from over and there is more to come, we don’t really get a sense of HOW MUCH more there is to come, and I found this slightly disorienting. It would be nice to know in advance how many books are planned for this series; then again, this seems to be a common thing in the fantasy genre, so maybe it’s just me!

Those two quibbles aside, this entertaining and fast moving story is well worth your time.

Although this story appears to be for younger readers, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well worth the read.
