Five bloodlines… three kingdoms… one law…

Long ago, magic pulsed through the very fabric of Eutopia. Now, it is a luxury enjoyed only by the Nobles of Schandrof… and the Anathemas. Considered unfit for healthy and safe societal fraternization, Anathemas are fated to die by the Kuwaha Council. Their only crime: being born mixed-race.

An epic tale of love, sacrifice, and man's hostility toward the unknown.

***

Trouble is brewing on the Southern border of Sabato, and Regan Kalish must do whatever it takes to protect his family. Without his father's inheritance ring, the Lepane Prince seeks work with a Kuwaha, Dioohn, to help his mother and save his great-grandfather.

He is reunited with his childhood best friend, Kayle, and the prodigious Sexa, as he uncovers the dark secrets about his bloodline and magical heritage. Secrets his family have tried to keep hidden, secrets that would change their lives as they knew it, and the fate of the whole of Eutopia.

Xyvah M. Okoye is an epic fantasy author and believer.

When she isn’t tinkering with the mechanics of another story, she might be refuelling her magic in a pool, on the beach, or close to some other body of water. And at times like that, with her pointy ears twitching and her button nose buried in a book, if you look close enough, you just might see the shimmering veil around her… The veil between this world, and hers… Between what is, and what possibly could be.

Jana (supervisor) gave Andrej (f, receptionist) some strong advice before she ended her shift.
Crooke St. St. John’s Crypt. Night Shelter. Jana made a wish & jumped.
When she awoke Jana was in Eutopia.
Forest of Murah. Zoran (m, fugitive) watched as Queen Worra (Dragons, Shifter, sharp claws, crimson scales, leathery wings) took off in the air.

Zoran was quickly dropped from the air to the ground & met Sexa (f, Royal).
Gingerdale River. Kalish farm. Regan Kalish (son/brother) Beranil (daughter/sister), Rani, Silibus (boy) Merid, & Naya were playing were the weren’t supposed to be.
Diamond Sea. Zoran (Droconian) had travelled for several days.
Sexa was sending Zoran to Lepane to acquire the Black diamond & give it to Dioohn.
Galeina (white dragon) told Zoran that was his mission.
Galeina (mother) told the Sexa “Missy” & Zoran 1 more bedtime tale about the Great Spirits Pyxis (f) founded Eutopia.
Lepane sailed the wind currents & got himself into mischief.
The Lepane people formed the elements, created beauty, & gave life to nature.

AlFhairie love music & dance all night.
Dioohn (Kuwaha) informed Regan Kalis (Felipe’s son) that his sister is Kayle’s (BMF, Droconian) mate.
What were Galeina & Inowe discussing?
Dioohn was amazed as Regan found out his great grandfather him a small fortune.
Regan also found out something else about Dioohn.
Kayle (Royal) began teaching Sexa things such as: the morning chores (cleaning, fetching water) & making the beds.
What happened to Kayle?
Sexa wasn’t thrilled about killing Dragons.

What were Flaxx & Dioohn discussing?

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written fantasy book. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a fantastic description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great fantasy movie, or better yet a mini-TV series. It wasn’t as exciting as I hoped so I will only rate it at 4/5 stars.

“We make plans with certainty, unaware that everything we know, everything we love, balances on a razor’s edge.” ~ Tainted by Xyvah M. Okoye

An incredibly delightful adventure!

Tainted is the first book in the Age of the Anathema series, and it follows three boys, Regan, Kayle, and Sexa. These three spend the book coming into themselves and discovering the paths they are meant take in life. Of course, their paths have them crossing journeys with each other, and out of their shared destinies is born a bromance that I lived for while reading this enthralling story.

The chapters alternate between two different timelines, with the odd chapters all being the past timeline and the even chapters all being the present. This isn’t noticeable immediately but quickly becomes apparent in a non-jarring way. The author does a good job of easing the reader into it.

There is a romantic subplot that had me flip-flopping between annoyance and approval, but it seemed to be the purpose of the minor drama now that I look back on it. All three boys are connected to the girl, Beranil, though not all of them romantic.

There’s a lot of different races/kinds in this series that I know we’ll be exploring deeper in the next several books. All races are forbidden from procreating with each other. Any half-breed children are called Anathemas and shouldn’t exist.

All of our boys (and Beranil) are Anathemas. But they are more than that. At least Kayle and Sexa are. Not sure about Regan yet, to be honest, but I feel like he’s about to sprout into a special flower too.

[spoiler maybe?]

The stakes are high in this book too, and NO ONE IS SAFE. The stress I felt knowing this author was willing to kill my darlings. Oh, the stress!

I would say Tainted is an epic fantasy adventure with many high fantasy elements, so if massive fantasy world-building, character design and development, and extravagant plots is your cup of tea, I think you’ll thoroughly enjoy this read!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
4.5/5 stars! Highly recommend. (Obviously.)

Well, that was a ride!

Firstly, before I get into my review, I should state that ‘Tainted’ is a dense and complicated fantasy world, and if you aren’t into epic fantasy, then this book probably won’t be for you. There is lots of world building, lots of magic, and lots of different blood lines and nobility to keep track of and at times I’ll admit, I got confused.

That being said, if you ARE into epic fantasy, then I would definitely recommend giving this one a read.

‘Tainted’ is, at its heart, a story of three broken boys, their roles as outcasts and their relationships with each other.

And I’m a sucker for it, honestly.

Regan, Kayle and Sexa are all Anathemas - people born of a mix between two races/bloodlines. And in the world of Eutopia that means they shouldn’t exist. They are also, in one way or another, connected to each other either through blood or through a shared past. But it is how they are to be connected in the future, that propels the story forward.

‘Tainted’ is told through two different timelines, and while this kind of storytelling structure might not suit everyone, I loved it. Watching the timelines converge was one of the highlights of this novel for me, and I’m excited to see how that story structure continues in future novels.

Speaking of highlights. Oh Kayle! My sweet cinnamon boy. I’m rooting for him all the way. Out of the three Anathema’s, Kayle stole my heart. An ultimate soft boy with a tortured soul? Yes please. Sexa was also cool, equally tortured but the opposite of soft. And Regan is the Anathema the reader knows the least about, though as this is the first in the series, I’m sure that his character will be developed further in the next novel.

In many ways ‘Tainted’ is a set-up book. It sets up the world, the characters and the stakes. And I think overall, it does very well achieving what it sets out to do.

I’m definitely going to be reading the next one. (Though I have a sneaking suspicion my soft boy is going to stop being so soft 😭.)

If you can't stand seeing yourself, don't read TAINTED. The book is a mirror, and it will suck you in and throw you out naked, leaving you with the choice to accept or deny what you see. Either way, you're tainted… but redeemable.

The story began, trotting at a comfortable pace and injecting tensions at the right places, raising the questions that keep pages turning. The novel's simple language and intentional narrative style winds around the plot, hinting at a subtle reassurance that a good storyteller is at work.

The most excellent highlight of the book is the uncanny familiarity it evokes within the reader. Much like a mirror, the setting of TAINTED gives you the unsettling feeling that you are there or have been there once. The story steals into your essence like your consciousness in a dream, you can't feel the ground beneath your feet, but you know you are there. The novel accomplished this feat through a stock of supernormal characters with relatable strengths and weaknesses in a world too paranoid to see strange people, shrug its shoulders, and take a chill pill.

Despite the novel's exceptional glimmers, it has few weaknesses. For a fantasy, TAINTED comes only with a handful of characters. It talks about people, but you don't get to meet them. It talks about cultures, but you don't get to feel them more than fleeting aromas in the air. The story world, though extensively developed, comes at the reader with noticeable poverty of people through whose eyes you could’ve appreciated it more.

On the brighter side, TAINTED is only the first book in the AGE OF THE ANATHEMA series. Hopefully, in the subsequent installments, the readers will get a better feel of the world the writer is building. The novel ended on a note that makes this promise, and I can't wait to see where the story goes from here.

I recommend TAINTED. Highly.

Anathema - a race of magic wielders considered unfit by the Kuwaha Council for societal fraternisation. The crime – being mixed race. After trouble brews on the border of Regan Kalish’s homeland, the young prince sets out to find work with the notorious kuwaha, Dioohn, to help his mother, his grandfather, and to save his home. Reunited with his childhood best friend, Kayle and his brother Sexa, the boys uncover dark secrets about their bloodlines, their pasts, and their magical inheritance. These secrets will change their lives and the fate of Eutopia forever.

What was an unexpected surprise about this novel were the two narratives taking place in different timelines, interwoven to build backstory and character development. The story is a split narration, one focused on Regan’s, Kayle’s, and Sexa’s magical upbringing as boys in the care of Dioohn, and the other as three reunited young man whose magic draws them closer to an uncertain and dangerous future. Each chapter jumps between the timelines, events from the past foreshadowing events in the future. It keeps reader’s guessing and is a well-crafted device to generate intrigue.

Tainted’s biggest strength is character development and world building. It’s an introductory novel to a much larger story, a series that promises epic battles, magical wars, and tension-filled action to come. In this book however, the narrative is solely focused on Regan, Kayle, and Sexa growing up, recovering from traumatic childhood pasts, learning about their magical abilities, and setting aside their differences as adults. It is a prequel novel to an epic story, with a descriptive and narrative writing style that is easy to follow and engaging.

Overall, Tainted is an enthralling first book to a series that promises to capture attention.

A very compelling and at times confusing story with all the jumping between timelines. But once I started reading I couldn't put it down! Definitely, a fantastic YA fantasy read. I'm looking forward to seeing what the author does next.

If you love epic fantasy with beautifully complex worldbuilding and stories which are woven together from various threads like an intricate tapestry, then Tainted - the start of the Age of The Anathema series - is definitely for you. The deeper I delved into the book, the more I couldn't put it down.

We start in a forest, with a character called Zoran being chased for reasons that are yet unclear other than stealing something. There, in a fraught encounter, he meets a couple of dragons. Together, they journey towards safety. Here, I must add that the way dragons are conceptualised by the author is unlike any other that I've seen before.

At first, this encounter seems to carry little weight. The storytelling shifts to an entirely different place, with completely different characters, and a new tale begins to unfold. We go on seeing the various threads of Tainted's plot independently for a while. All seems well as we get to know the customs, traditions, and scenery of the world that the author has masterfully designed - which by themselves are engaging and carry the story forward with ease.

Don't let this false sense of ease fool you, however, because all of a sudden, the plots come together and will blow your mind. I won't say any more as not to spoil it, except that everyone needs to read this *now*

Compelling but Complicated

There are many rich details in this book, but unfortunately the explanations often come long after details are introduced which leaves much confusion as to what is going on. There are many complicated relationships and and the plot alternates between the past and the present, yet for a while that is not established for the reader. The story was interesting and I am interested in where the story goes from here.

Tainted

Tainted is a very good book and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series. When I get used to the switching timelines, it was a compulsive read as I couldn’t wait to see how my favourite character, Sexa grew up and how he dealt with all that life threw at him. A brilliant first outing.

Oh my God !!! I got the chills so many times towards the end of this book. It completely blew my mind. It managed to surpass my high expectations. An epic tale of love, sacrifice, and man’s hostility toward the unfamiliar.

The hype around this book has been unquestionable and, admittedly, that made me eager to get my hands on it. Isn't it just so great when you find one of those books that completely drags you in, makes you fall in love with the characters, and demands that you sit on the edge of your seat for every twists, thriller moment of it? This is one of those books for me. An incredible story of five bloodlines, three kingdoms and one law.

I appreciate understanding writing, and this is quite possibly the most fascinating and elegantly composed stories I've at any point perused

This is a fantastic debut book that gripped me from the very start with brilliantly clever plot twists and turns. An easy writing style with great descriptions, believable characters. Well worth the read, and I am looking forward to the next book from this series and the author.

Tainted is a fully fantasy book that has an intricate plot. The world building is really amazing and it's really fun to imagine the magic we can't feel in real life. It feels like I'm in another world while reading this book. There are some shocking plots that I can't get over for a few days which I prefer not to spoiled so you can feel it yourself . Overall, a great book and I can't wait to read the rest of the series

Book one in the Age of Anathema series. I liked the characters, especially the relationship between Galeina and Zoran. This book felt like it was meant for the world-building for the series and that wasn’t a bad thing because it didn’t make the book feel too rushed. I didn’t like that the book jumps between different timelines so often. It felt a bit choppy, and it would have been better if it wasn’t for every other chapter changing to the past. This book is a great start to the series.
