A fiery curiosity, and a very limited run in print thanks to some very personal, unsubstantiated allegations made therein about a certain pollie from the Liberal side of politics and his family.

Ellis's moral arguments are compelling and confronting, his biases honest and unashamed. The shambolic structure of this book lurches between first-hand and secondhand accounts of important Labor Party history, random spots of literature and poetry, and personal reminisce, resulting in a thoroughly entertaining sh*tshow I return to whenever I need reminding of the importance of art over economic rationalism.

I must admit I really enjoy Bob Ellis' intemperate, flamboyant, passionate view into Australian political life. For me, he does not fall into some kind of trap of saying 'shock jock' kind of statements but yet he manages to stir the pot. I feel like he says the kind of things that people think, but would be too polite to say or write down. I love too that while I read it, I feel like I'm sitting at the table with these characters. He provides enough earthy details to give a sense of time and place. This book pretty much covers the period from 1995 to 1997. So we who lived through it watched the Australian Labor Party under Paul Keating ushered out and John Howard ride the wave of popularity into government. Interesting times. Its a fascinating read if you care about such things (and enjoy a bit of excess in language and thought - which I do).
