Accessory to Magic #5

The Spellcast Gate

Rate this book
Two worlds collide. The light is gone. And the truth just doesn’t exist.

Aided by the original Order of Laenmúr in Xahar’áhsh, Jessica Northwood finally discovers how far her role as Guardian really extends. But to truly fulfill it, she must bend the truth for everyone, and it won’t be pretty.

Her vestrohím darkness battles with a powerful magic she didn’t know she had. Leandras tries to come clean, but it’s one disaster after another with the fae man who apparently can’t decide where his loyalties lie. Or maybe Jessica just can’t accept how intertwined their fates have become.
Deadly alliances and maddening deceptions greet Jessica at every turn while both sides of the Gateway crumble beneath a ravaged world desperately trying to break free. Jessica can’t do this on her own, but her greatest ally makes her doubt everything she knew about life, death, and the mysteries between. If she lets herself trust Leandras, she may as well throw herself at the enemy’s feet. Without him, though, there’s no hope left for the Guardian—or for anyone.

Wow this fifth and final book in this series was definitely a rollercoaster of a ride. It picked up pretty much where book 4 finished, with Jessica and Leandras in the fae world of Xahar'áhsh, making their way across this devastated, ravaged world trying to find the final piece that will save both this world and Earth.

Upon finally meeting the original Order of the Laenmur, many secrets are revealed, many truths are told and Jessica finally feels happier with herself in facing her own demons and whatever may come next for the pair of them. However, the trust she starts to feel for Leandras is soon broken, seemingly beyond repair, but she knows she cannot complete this epic quest without him, so back home she drags him instead of leaving him in the desolate wasteland as I would have done!

When Leandras reveals the "truth" (you can never be completely sure that he is telling the truth!), the only thing he knows that he can do to prove his loyalty to Jessica is to carry out one of the most excruciatingly painful spells - I actually cringed at this one, but the descriptions of it all were so vivid. I really did feel like I was in the room with them, seeing it, hearing it and feeling the pain myself!

The battle was not an easy one - the way everyone came together to support Jessica was brilliant and completely unexpected for her. However, the big bad is not the only big bad that Jessica has to stand up to. Demons of her own past have emerged and must be thwarted before she can carry out the final spell. I really did think she would cave in the face of this one, but she proved how much she has grown over the past 10 years, how strong and determined she is to not let the demon best her. All she needed was that faith in herself that she could do it!

I loved the ending - I wasn't sure whether it would be a HEA kind of ending with Jessica and Leandras and liked the HFN ending instead. That will leave the door open for more adventures later on I'm sure, but for now this ending was a great one!

The descriptions in this book are amazing - they are so clear, vivid and detailed. You can truly picture the scenes, the landscapes, the magic and the characters that Kathrin Hutson has created here, but it's not overly descriptive that is detracts from the plot and action! The characters are fun too, even though this time round they had to be more serious about what they were doing. And yes we got the Bank back - I missed it in the last book, so was hoping for a long return! Love its snarkiness and inappropriate comments with Jessica trying her hardest to ignore them!

This series has been a great one to read and would highly recommend that you start at the beginning of it!

This is book five of the Accessory to Magic series and sees Jessica Northwood and Leandras the fae, who she still isn’t sure whether she can trust yet or not, searching for the last magical item they need for Leandras to perform the spell which should stop the destruction of his world and the possible destruction of her own. Most of the story takes place on the world on the other side of the Gateway, accessed through the bank and which she became the Guardian of. They meet up with the original Order of Laenmur and the two have a meeting with the Order’s leader, Railen, involving some mind numbing drinks that bring about the truth Jessica will need to succeed, but as usual comes about with lots of confusing meanings. Her vestrohim magic has received a boost with a strange side-effect during their quest, giving her darkness a tinge of light. Leandras seems to want to show he can change, but still manages to cause more issues as his loyalties finally get revealed in the worst possible manner. Attacks come before they can get back to the Gateway and opening the door back into the bank is not as simple as she expected. She has left Ben the former Guardian’s nephew, but a complete non-magical, in charge of the bank whilst she was away, and comes back to a few changes.
Jessica now has to meet with her world’s Order of Laenmur members, to prepare for the final spell, when those from the other side of the Gateway should arrive to support them in the final battle. But Leandras has deceived many and has a huge problem that could cause everything to fail. Only a horrendous spell, worse even than a shattering, would need to be done to break a link with the enemy and ensure Leandras is truly on their side of the final battle. Without him, the battle will be lost. Jessica has more than this final battle to deal with, as an enemy from her past, which shaped a lot of the past ten years for her, will hijack her attention and bring old fears to the fore. This is the finale to the series and the relationship between Jessica and her maddening fae partner in crime, will pull from one extreme to the other, from possible romance to trust issues, affecting all that happens in both worlds. A fitting finale with a slow and complex start and nice to see the bank back in the midst of the quirky nature of the story and even gaining some modern day methods of communication. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Packing Peanuts

This series reminds me of getting a large Amazon box for tiny content. The vast majority of the series is repetitive and unnecessary filler. Although I liked the first book enough that I waited for the series to be completed before writing a review, I am crushingly disappointed.

In the first half of this book, Jessica is still doing the same old reactionary song and impulsive dance that she was doing in the first chapter of book 1. There comes a point where authors either need to get on with it tell the story already or stop writing and this author passed that point with book 3. If I had a dollar for every time Jessica says that she doesn’t drink while she is in the midst of getting trashed, it would have paid for all 5 books. Or for every time Leandras not tell her every single detail of every piece of information that he has about every single thing that he has ever done, said, or thought in the past 1,000 years, followed by “no! I don’t want to hear it” and some kind of violent, abusive lashing out. If the author cut to the chase and had Jessica figure some things out or listen for a half-second, the series would have been a much tighter 3 books rather than a loose, sprawling, unnecessary 5.

To be fair, the series would have worked a lot better if the author had limited herself to 3 books instead of stretching it out for as long as possible. I found books 4 and 5 to largely detract from the story that had been set up in books 1, 2, and 3. I’m not sure why the author had to painstakingly spell that Jessica saying she killed Rufus and felt destroyed by guilt was in regard to him using drugs - a situation that literally had nothing to do with her. Considering how many times Jessica violently attacks and maims people - including Leandras - and committed horrific atrocities killing everyone in her path, the boo-hooing that she couldn’t stop a drug addict from using used drugs was a non-sequeteur. Jessica had just killed Mickey in front of all her friends and didn’t blink twice.

“The Spellcast Gate” by Kathrin Hutson is fifth volume on her “Accessory to Magic” captivating urban fantasy series, which follows Jessica Northwood (FMC) in her epic journey after ‘inheriting’ a magic sentient bank, and just for those new to the series, in her defense she was just looking for a work, and unemployed can’t be overly choosers. Since then Jessica has get a grip on the whole situation, aligned herself (more or less willingly) to Leandras, a conniving and equally fascinating Fae and finally regained the memories about the real purpose of the Gateway.

Jessica has come a long way forward since her ‘employed’ days, finally discovering not only her role as Guardian, but also what exactly that role comprises, what is not exactly easy fulfill. Both her magic forces fight constantly with each other in her core. And – as usual 😊 – Leandras breaks havoc even when he is trying not to, after all he is Fae, havoc runs through his veins. But this time Jessica’s own inability to accept their relationship and how deep her fates have been intertwined since they meet, also plays a role in their – even going – banter.

The stakes are higher than even, with danger lying on both sides of the Gateway, Jessica cannot fight on her own, only Leandras’s provides some hope for the fate of the Gateway, but it could also mean to thrown herself at the enemy’s full mercy.

“Accessory to Magic” is a captivating series with offers a brand-new magical verse, fast-paced, full of twists and very unexpected turns, with a very healthy dose of humor, and a wonderful snarky, independent heroine, a take-nonsense, credible and instantly relatable heroine (Jessica); a wonderful companion (Leandras), never ever call him side-kick, he is a Fae, he would kick your behind, guarantee!; a sentient back (yeap!), and a very well-constructed story-arc.

A fantastic end to an epic adventure across two worlds!

I love these characters! The self-recriminating, chaos-incarnate heroine and the snarky, two-faced fae make such a great pair in our world, in Xahar'áhsh, or frankly anywhere the author chooses to send them. (I'm all for some out-takes without the bigger plot hanging over their heads, but I'm a sucker at this point.) The fact we've waited the first four books for them to quit dancing around the sexual tension and just have it out with one another and finally get to read that was just icing on the cake. The characters were all multi-faceted, even those who only showed up for a chapter. I'm not sure I've ever been as swept up into a complex setting so easily in my life.

This is the finale to a series that twisted and turned so many ways that I never knew what to expect next. Imaginative doesn't even come close to describing the entire other world the author dreamed up, the birthplace of magic, the magic that spilled over into this world until it was a little different but so much more fascinating. It all started with one ex-con witch (who took the wrong apprenticeship if she wanted a normal life from that point on), and there was no way I anticipated it ending here. I'm not sure I could have imagined even the end of the first book, frankly, and I love my epic fantasy adventures. Nothing in this series is predictable except the snark (which is practically guaranteed). I totally recommend the entire series to anyone who loves involved plots, deep characters with a lot of introspection to do, and TWO elaborate worlds to explore to make it to the finish line and hopefully save both.

What an awesome ending! Spin offs would be great! Wow finally close the end of their journey and they meet the original Laenmur group, a very eclectic group to be sure. Railen seems like quite the character! Jessica is introduced to everyone and the perpetual party continues on. He takes Jessica and Leandras into a tent for a "meeting" and they drink a drink that tells them when their done with the meeting! It takes a while for everything to come out but things seem to be off on a good foot. Lots of secrets abound, lots of mixed up messages and it takes just a few seconds after receiving the last artifact for reveals to be made. The most significant is after spending the night waiting for the poison rain to stop and dry up... Leandras is caught communing with the bad guy! Jessica feels like a fool for trusting him and storms off... while storming off she argues with herself and decides to give Leandras another chance. They make back to the door way and a battle ensues... they fight, they win and end back on the Earth plane, pulled through by the bank in the nick of time! The truth is told and a solution offered, although said solution is dangerous! They perform the Thon-Rothim... so dangerous but they survive! The Bruki finds her and drags her out to another location as he tries to take her magic...but she's changed and has now figured out how to beat him! She beats the Brukii and beats the DaluRazj.... win win but things take a turn and a bit of a hiccup happens, but in the end all turns out good! Great ending to the story, but really am hoping for spin offs!

The final installment of the Accessory to Magic series picks up exactly where the previous book left off. Leandras and Jessica have passed through the Gateway and are in search of the artifacts required to save both worlds. The journey threatens to bring them closer or tear them apart.

When I initially completed the novel, I confess that I was troubled by a couple of elements that I had been very curious about not being resolved or even explained in more detail. But the more I sit with it, the more I think the author made the right choices. This is a fitting finale. Enough threads were tied off that it feels like a natural conclusion, but (as in life) there are some threads that could easily be woven into a spin-off/companion series, or allow for these characters to return for different adventures.

I have always loved the character development in this series. I am very drawn to dark sarcastic wit so these characters are right up my alley. I don't think I'd like them in real life, but I find them immensely entertaining to read them!

The pacing was very fast in this novel, which befits the climax of a 5-book series. I liked the pace. I couldn't put the book down - it was engrossing. And yet, the author managed to be descriptive without slowing the action down.

I wouldn't say this was my favourite entry in the series, but it was satisfying. I hope we'll hear more from this universe!

Jessica and Leandras start their incredible adventure through the Gateway trying to save the two worlds unaware of the different types of dangers that lurked around every corner.
After returning back to the bank they still have spells to cast to rid the evil of both worlds.
Jessica matured a lot throughout this series. My heart went out to Leandras and the sacrifices he had to make to assure the Guardian's safety. Loved his personality.
A fabulous paranormal series filled with mystery, suspense, humour and action packed drama that keeps you intrigued throughout the series craving more!

For some reason Jessica's personality in the last two books grates. There is a goal, to save the world, that's what the quest has been about. When it comes down to the final push does she really need to ask third parties what to do? Because after all, it's about saving the world, not about her. She does face down her lifelong nemesis and in doing so learns her true strength. Leandras is always mysterious and still sometimes short sighted by withholding information. I enjoyed the lizard and wished that character had been developed more. The bank started out really well but seemed to get more juvenile as the series progressed. This book is great on world building and characters allowing the details to grow in your imagination.

I knew this series was coming to an end soon, and I was a little surprised that this was the last one. In this latest, I finally wasn’t as confounded by Leandras as I have been. The other side of the gateway was a very interesting adventure, and I actually laughed out loud in a couple of places, something I don’t do very often just in my head. This was mostly a satisfying conclusion to the story, but I admit to being a little sore at one of the things poor Leandras and Jessica went through at the very end. I am excited to see what the author has in store for us readers next. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

The author did it again, a wonderful story and a great ending. This story was a whirlwind it kept your emotions going up and down. All I can say is what a ride! Jessica and her friends have a fight on their hands and Jessica learns more about herself. This is my favourite book in the series. This may or may not be the ending, when you read the last chapter you will know what I mean. I hope there will be more stories with Jessica, the bank and Leandras. Until then goodbye for now. I would recommend this book and series.

In this book Jessica faces hard truths and more craziness as she and Leandras continue their fight to save 2 worlds. It was entertaining, fun, crazy, intense, hilarious, and full of secrets revealed yet more discovered. I was hooked from the beginning and glued to the end just to see what our duo would face this time and what they would be blindsided with too. Loved it and the suspense and mystery tones too. Just another good book in this series I enjoyed. And the secondary characters were a riot too.

Jessica and Leandras are in the other world retrieving the assets necessary for the spell. Jessica is learning more and more about Leandras’s schemes and herself. Some good things and some frightening things. Jessica will have to dig deep and rely on her gut to get her through. Does she follow Leandras or does she go it alone? Danger, battle, and her personal nightmare blend together. Neither side of the gate is safe. I recommend this read.

I want more!

Jessica Northwood and Leandras are battling for survival in the paranormal world. Failure is not an option since it will mean the end of both worlds but Leandras may not be the Fae she thought he was and if she cannot trust him then who can she trust in this battle?

This is such an amazing series. I am not ready for it to end! Hopefully, Kathrin Hutson will develop some spinoffs or just use that marvelous imagination to create a whole new world. I received an advance copy but my review is voluntary and honest.

Jessica and Leandras have their battles to fight, they are back, via the gateway, but there is still so much to do. Can they finally overcome the evil and keep those they care for safe? Or will the evil win the final battle? I loved this conclusion to a gripping adventure, who knows it's possible there might be a spin off? I have loved all the different characters, and how the bank gets more and more personality.

I enjoyed this series and this book was bitter sweet. I did not want to see it end but the story needed a resolution. Jessica has definitely grown and matured during the books and I wish the author would revisit her in the future. Hutson knows how to make a reader care for the characters, to laugh and cry with them. I recommend the series.

With plenty of humor, action and snark the finale is here. With all the twists, turns, drama, intrigue, sexual tensions, lies and possible betrayals. Jessica endures with all the strength and character our heroine possesses. I still have a few questions and some things felt a little unresolved but this still a good series

Either allow one extremely long day or two moderated ones for this PG15 conclusion to the five-book urban fantasy series in which Jessica Blackwood is involved with Winthrop & Dirledge Security Banking in Golden, near Lakewood, Colorado. One COULD read it as a stand-alone, but it is better binge-read in series order.

Very good as usual.

This series went in places that I never expected, keeping me.off balance whenever I would start to anticipate future storylines. Mild romance nothing overly graphic. Mostly clean language, I don't always notice the occasional F-bombs, so I may have missed some common vulgarity. A quality product from a fairly consistent writer. I "rented/borrowed " this title through Kindle Unlimited.

In this final book in the Accessory to Magic Series, Jessica and Leandras travel to the other side of the Gateway to Calindo in Xahari, Jessica meets the original Order of Laenmur members, Leandras collects the final artifact needed to trap the Dalu'Razj, and they survive an ambush at the Gateway back to Earth. This story has action, romance, and magic aplenty plus has a HEA of sorts. Highly recommended.

How dare you, Kathrin Hutson. Around the 85% mark (Kindle), I was 99% sure everything wouldn't get wrapped up by the time the book finished and there was going to be a surprise 6th book. But IT DID wrap up and there ISN'T a 6th book. And now I have to move on from this world (for now? I'd really love a Leandras' backstory book!). UGH.

While in the other world, Jessica and Leandras find a mutual attraction. At the same time, she still can't trust him completely. She finds things out that changes everything for all. They make it back but at what cost? This is a perfect ending but I feel that there is so much more to tell. Maybe someday......

The perfect ending..

Finally its show down with the final battle. Jessica saves the fae and ties him to herself. So they can begin the final show down. It was a slow burner for this book but still worth the read. Will the gaurdian and bank reunite what happens in the battle you will just have to read and find out
