Parke Godwin was an American writer known for his lyrical yet precise prose style and sardonic humor. He was also known for his novels of legendary figures placed in realistic historical settings; his retelling of the Arthur legend (Firelord in 1980, Beloved Exile in 1984, and The Last Rainbow in 1985) is set in the 5th century during the collapse of the Roman empire, and his reinterpretation of Robin Hood (Sherwood, 1991, and Robin and the King, 1993) takes place during the Norman conquest and features kings William the Conqueror and William Rufus as major characters. His other well-known works include Waiting For The Galactic Bus (1988) and its sequel The Snake Oil Wars (1989), humorous critiques of American pop culture and religion.
Parke Godwin also worked as a radio operator, a research technician, a professional actor, an advertising man, a dishwasher and a maitre d' hotel.
Godwin's short fiction has appeared in several anthologies. His short story "Influencing the Hell out of Time and Teresa Golowitz," was the basis of an episode of the television series The Twilight Zone.
Growing up I used to collect the W.I.T.C.H magazines which each came with a comic section. I've loved this comic for so long and finding out they put all of the comics together into books made me so happy! I adore this story and reading it like this made the story even better. I can't wait to read the rest of them.
When this was on TV, I loyally watched the heck out of this show. I might not remember too many of the details anymore from the show, but I remember enjoying it.
I have to say, I think I liked this even more than the TV series.
There's just so much MORE to this comic. They have more powers than simple elemental magic. They have so much more personality than I remember. The art and story are so much quirkier than I remember.
For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, W.I.T.C.H. is the story of five friends who turn into magical guardians to save their town. They also have to learn the right and wrong way to use their new-found magical abilities (for example, a good way would be to kick monster butt, while a bad way would be to turn people into frogs). Essentially, a Sailor Moon mashed together with some Sabrina the Teenaged Witch animated series hijinks.
If you can find this gem of a comic, definitely pick it up. It's so much fun.
Quando era criança adorava estas revistas. Conseguia lê-las através de uma amiga, mas nunca cheguei a ler a coleção completa. Estou mega entusiasmada por fazer isso agora e este início promete!
I remember reading this gn over and over again when I was about nine years old. Unfortunately in Australia they didn’t last too long in the Disneygirl magazine and the comics stopped coming here. Then they made some books but they only went up to narcissia’s arc, so basically part two. Then I remember the Television series from jetix but that only lastest one season in Australia as well. I don’t know why Australia didn’t take a liking for w.i.t.c.h but I adored it so much my first comic fell apart. Then after a long wait (now in my adulthood) I was able to find the comics republished! I have taken no shame in being able to read on about the girls stories. I will always cherish this comic that started it all for me. I love this series so much and while it’s not perfect, for my inner child it nearly is.
P.S. Anyone notice Irma’s turtle in the og comics was called Leafy but in the new ones they changed the name to Lettuce? Irma’s my favourite character out of the girls so I noticed this straight away!
I read this when I was a kid and decided to pick it up again to see what I thought of it… MAN is it bad! Absolute slop! Characters design is cute… 2 stars
The power of friendship is about 6 friends finding each other, and discovering their talents, but one of the 6 friends betrays the other 5. It is at this time that Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia, and Hay Lin discover that they are witches. They come up with a nickname, W.I.T.C.H. because it has the first letter of their names, and they've just noticed that they have strange powers. Will has the gift of talking to electronics, Irma has the gift of water, Taranee has the gift of fire, Cornelia has the gift of earth, and Hay Lin has the gift of air. Together they battle many obstacles, such as the 12 portals, places where the vail, the "wall" that protects the good side against the evil side, opens up and the W.I.T.C.H. girls have to close it back up. They meet 'Snake Man' and the 'Blue Gorilla' and they have to fight them.
I liked this book because there was a lot of action. It tells the story of how friends can come together to help each other battle obstacles. Even though I don't really read as much fantasy books, I really liked it. It was one of those fantasy books that you just can get your hands off of! I would recommend it to anyone who likes the W.I.T.C.H. series or just likes a good story.
One of my all time favorites! The story is amazing and the art is beautiful!! I loved the show growing up and also love the graphic novels, I can't wait to read more
4/6 So nostalgic!! I loved watching the show as a kid and I remember getting one of these comics (chapter 2 in this book) as part of Disney magazine back in the day!
From what I remember, this is different from the show, and honestly this comic felt a little rushed. Will is the new kid but like one day later she suddenly had five new friends??? I know they probably wanted to “get to the good stuff” but they could’ve had a few pages of them getting to know each other better or something.
In chapter one, Will moves in and says “school starts tomorrow” (which makes me think it’s the beginning of the school year) but then a few pages later they’re all getting ready for a Halloween party at school??? That’s going until midnight??? The girls are 13-ish lol
This really made me want to watch the show again or somehow find the rest of the graphic novels and read them!
I would be lying if I said nostalgia from the show did not play a role in the high rating, also the artwork in this is just gorgeous!
I have read this before, but officially added it to the list this year since I needed a graphic novel for a reading challenge and this itty bitty thing was the larger of the two I own. (Will take recommendations)
The graphic novel follows five high school girls Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia, and Hay Lin (hence the name WITCH) learning they have magical powers and are the next generation of Guardians to protect the veil between worlds/dimensions with evil lurking as the veil is at a weak point, and as goes with magic and stopping evil villains while learning how to use said magic, shenanigans and chaos ensue.
Magical Girl As I continue to reread this from time to time as I grow older, the series gets a little less magical for me. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy reading them out loud to myself (in all different voices, of course) but in general, it's just your typical magical girl genre featuring girl power and an evil they must defeat. I have watched (and read) several magical girl anime/manga, and they seem to go a little more in depth with each girl and their relationships and personal power. In this book, we don't get that much with these characters.
2.5/5 For nostalgia reasons. A good read for junior high.
dude i remember GOBBLING this series up when i was like 11 years old or so. this series is one of the reasons why i got so into graphic novels. even though I'm really fuzzy on the plots and my memories of these books, i really want to reread it because i remember LOVING the characters and the art and the magic. I'm going to try to find the TV series too lol i just want to reread it all so badly now!!
The writing in this book is incredibly tiny. I read it in a well-lit room, with my glasses on, and still had to hold it up to my face.
The story is about 5 girls who find out they have special powers. WITCH stands for the first initial of their first names. This first edition explains how and why they have powers, and how they discover them. It's an interesting story, and I think some of my students will like the fantasy elements to this story.
Loved this series growing up so I decided to read them again in my free time. I love the illustrations and how each girl has their own identity. It always interested me that the girls transform into fairy looking guardians. I love Hay-Lin’s grandmother. She’s so sweet and helps lead them on their quest before she passes. I forget why Elyon betrays the girls. Can’t wait to read more!
It’s so weird to be reading this again. I remember getting them when I was 14. I was obsessed and would try drawing the characters for daaays. But honesty it’s not bad. Decent story for the age demographic it’s meant for.
The charecters were idealistic, stupid, and hard to follow. They used their magic to make themselves pretty and i thought the plot and art were mind numbingly bland.
This was a wonderful blast from the past. I remember watching and loving the show when I was younger and I really appreciate the diversity in this series!!
The saddest thing about this comic book is that you can't stop reading it and when you realize you're DONE! So adorable! Missed this part of my teenage!
Read these and watched the show growing up as a kid and just had to revisit them. Actually got a bob haircut one time and showed a picture of Will as my inspiration pic 😂
