In a lawless galaxy, justice is only a blaster bolt away. Beyond the Outer Boundary of the Core Worlds lies the Frontier. Colonists looking for a life outside the corporate choked governments, cross the border seeking new opportunities, trading security for freedom. In the Frontier, law is absent except for the Marshals. The warrior mystics saved Orin Lashra from a grinding death in the gladiatorial slave pits, recruiting him as a deputy to serve beside them. During a routine tribal negotiation, violence verging on civil war kills the mentor he called mother. Rising from a grave he wouldn’t accept, Orin embarks on a path of brutal revenge, determined to draw the Marshals and their elite Lancer Regiments into the conflict. Join Orin in his struggle against disciplined Marshals, relentless Lancers, and shadowy threats to find those responsible for her death and crush them for their mistake... Never hunt what can hunt you back. Hunter’s The Mongrel blends military science fiction with hard core space opera to weave a tale of brutality and blasters. Fans of Killjoys, Star Wars and Dark Matter will fall right into the cockpit for an adrenaline-filled thriller that never lets up on the throttle.
This book certainly had the makings of a good story. Actually, it probably has the makings of several good stories, but the way it was all crammed together via non stop action with almost no dialogue or narrative glue to hold it together, it ended up being a painful read. While there were hints of character and world building, the actual result was just confusing.
As a detailed outline or an early rough draft, I'd have given it 5 stars, as a finished book, it still needs work and some quality time with a hard nosed editor.
I really enjoyed the characters in this book and there interactions. The mc is a man's man and is everything I like in a leading man. That being said, I found the book to be to heavy on action not including the mc, pages upon pages of Lancer vs bot action with little plot line movement left me feeling like this book could have been half its length. Also there is no real conclusion, the ending left me feeling unfulfilled and not motivated enough to read the next "book"
This book was amazing. The detailed characters having such fun in the action packed story. There was a great mix of high tech and the environments without being bogged down by it. I definitely enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it. I am also happy to see this is part of a series, as that way we should get even more fun following the characters through this interesting universe.
Really enjoyed this book! Tight plot, good pacing, engaging story. But, the characters made this book! The way the characters interacted with each other added a significant depth to what could've easily been a one-off generic mil-sf book. Highly recommended! Can't wait for Book 2!
A very engrossing book about a half-breed teenager who was trained as a gladiator. Because of some luck he gets rescued from a gladiatorial match. He has access to enormous powers from crucible and uses them with his fighting prowess to hunt down the ones responsible for the death of his adopted mother. A lot of action and some surprising twists and turns. Well worth reading.
This book gets good about half way through. It just throws you into the chaos without explaining anything or providing background or world building. Enjoyable though. Needs more character development and explanation to be great.
Good ideas, some Star world influence in the Way but still original enough. But the execution /writing style is lacking. No word building, no dialogue for many pages, no cohesion in the long battle fronts. Some humour and the tech part I liked; hope the second book will improve.
This story was supposed to be about the mongrel. They were more action scenes interspersed concerning the Lancers and the marshals then the main character. A little confusing but going on to read the next book in the series
Excellent read, the description of how the Templars pull their power in The Way from the Crucible is very poetic. Full of humor, action, and real emotion. Can't wait to read the next one!
