Is there always a price to pay when it comes to love?
After catching him in the act, Lacey Hollis decides she’s worth a whole lot more than a scummy, cheating boyfriend and decides to march straight out of their home and life together. However, striking out on her own proves to be difficult considering she has no money, no apartment, and job prospects for a college dropout are pretty slim. Luckily, she has two best friends with their own successful business who might be in need of a new hire. Using her powers of persuasion, Lacey talks them into signing her up to be the newest call girl at their high-class escort agency.
In spite of her formally monogamous ways, Lacey is determined to be the perfect call girl and find her independence. She’s got the looks and the charm . . . she’ll figure out the whole sex-for-money thing along the way. Unfortunately when Asher Knight becomes her first client, she totally chokes.
As luck would have it, Asher is also in need of a favor and he’s willing to give Lacey another shot. With other priorities on his mind, Asher prefers the company of call girls to the commitment of an actual girlfriend and Lacey might be the perfect woman to help with his current predicament. The two of them strike up an unusual deal and begin to learn that falling in love isn’t always at the cost of who they are.
Call on Me follows Lacey Hollis, a newly single woman looking to turn her life around after finding out the one and only man she’s ever loved was cheating on her. She had no job, no place to live, no defined skill set, and she turns to her close friends and their company Vamp Escorts in order to start fresh.
Meet Asher, a complicated man who relies on escorts to fulfill his sexual needs but also for social events. He isn’t for relationships, but finds himself enthralled when he is set up with Lacey as an escort.
With lots of family drama and angst, we get to explore this sex work positive heroine and her grumpy client.
Overall I enjoyed this book. I am a friend of the author, so I am slightly biased. But I found it hard to read mainly bc I know what fanfic this first novel derived from and I kept getting sidetracked trying to remember details from the original fandom. HOWEVER, I am happy that the author is going to explore the relationships within Asher’s family, Lacey’s friends, and Asher’s co-workers.
This is a very difficult one for me to review, given that the klaroline fic this is based on is still very fresh in my mind and nostalgia is real 🥰
The story includes both escort and fake-dating tropes, so I definitely think this is worth checking out for anyone interested in those. The escort aspect is 100% looked through rose-coloured glasses, but there's a foreword about this from the author that I thoroughly appreciated.
I'm intrigued about learning the stories of the side characters.
Trigger warning: mentions of abuse (past, non-descriptive)
When Lacey catches her boyfriend cheating on her she loses her home and her lively hood. But after convincing her friends to let her work for their escort agency she meets Asher, a business man who has no time for relationships and who becomes her first client.
This is a cute read. Lacey is a heroine I haven’t read a lot, you don’t see many shallow heroines who aren’t ashamed or ridiculed for being shallow. If you’re a fan of Pretty Woman or The Wedding Date this is a good read for those tropes.
This book is such a well-rounded read, it will have you hooked from start to finish and make you want more! Lots of romance for sure, but you also have humour and flawed characters who are understandably so once you get into the backstory. I really enjoyed reading these characters' journeys throughout the book, it was so well written and made for such a satisfying read. I can't wait to read the next installment in the series!!
Am I slightly biased on how much I enjoyed this because the author is a friend of mine? Perhaps! This is a fun little romp and perfect for those who love a good fake-dating trope. Come for the spice and stay for the drama!
Lacey is sweet, lost when it comes to what she wants to do in life after she finds her boyfriend cheating on her, and with her friends help, she gives a new opportunity a chance. Being a paid escort is something that makes her nervous, but when she meets Asher Knight, her mind begins to change about this sudden career shift.
Lacey finds a Prince Charming behind the daddy issues and hot temper.
Overall, this was a fun, cute read with characters I enjoyed and couldn’t help but root for. Lacey especially was a breath of fresh air, and I loved her relentless positivity. Chloe and Willa were cool also, and I wish they’d been given a little more love by the narrative. I love how sex positivity was at the forefront of this story given all the attacks on women and our autonomy lately. Asher was awesome, and I appreciated his complexity. He was perhaps my favorite character in the story. I wish there were chapter breaks, or at least something between when the POVs switched because it was slightly jarring to read.
I have always been a fan of Katie's writing especially her ability to build up tension and depict longing in her characters. Even though I know the original FF off by heart, this was still a pleasant read and I can't wait for more stories from her pen.
I really really want to give this book 5 stars but I just can’t. There’s no separation between the characters during chapters and makes it so difficult to figure out when they switch.
Overall the story and plot was amazing. The editing is just rather poor.
