Great story, but not gripping

I rather liked this series and read all of it. The characters are good, the plot interesting, but... It didn't grip me. I was able to put it down and pick it up a week later. It took a long time to finish because I didn't need to figure out what happened next. I still recommend it, but it didn't make the final star.

Liked story. Hated errors.

I'm figuring inahri are the people and inahrai is the language although this definition didn't always fit. Couldn't do the same with Arluthru. When it was misspelled, it was just misspelled. Then there's the totally wrong use of pronouns. Definition of Roger was wrong. People have died because of this wrong understanding of the meaning of Roger. Story goes through various conflicts and battles where some people die, but get resurrected while others, sadly, just die. This is true of enemy also. Some can't die, but others actually do die. Very little rhyme, and no reason. Earth is overcome by hordes of monsters whose only function is to breed like ants, attack, and kill. Survival requires leaving earth in generation ships, and as always, the survivors forget their purpose. Guess what, the planet they go to is where the monsters came from in the first place. How did that happen? Well, there's been some backstabbing and other underhanded things going on. So when all is said and done we find out that we win this battle, but there's a war going on that this series of books will presumably answer in a new series.

Wow. I just finished the five-book box set of the Forgotten Colony box Set by M. R. Forbes. It took me a while since each book is a long read. There are heroic Marines, monsters from outer space, humanity desperate to escape Earth to make a new start somewhere else. Some members of the human race seem to be in it only for themselves, but the heroes still fight bravely.

They must battle human ignorance and complacency. The technology that other races possess is mind-bending. At the end I found a little bit of Lovecraft-type beings.

I have read a lot of Science Fiction in my life and this box set was a huge dose of the type of stories that I love. If you like space monsters and complex plots, this is for you.

I Started with Sheriff Duke, Now if the Cards are Played Right Another Good Man to Save Humankind

Space Marine Sergeant Caleb Card is a lot like Sheriff Hayden Duke. They are both characters with a strong ethos, who do the right thing, not the easy thing. Though they are similar, they are not the same. M.R. Forbes has given them strong, yet distinctive personalities, and like the many other books I've read in this multipart universe, the supporting cast of characters are also well developed. The books in the Forgotten series are one long arc, not meant to be read as stand-alone tomes.
The books are well written, and well edited, with solid story lines. The dialogue is realistic and hot contrived. I strongly recommend The five books of The Forgotten arc.

Sargent Card, private Wash, the rest of the guardians left to take care of the starship betrayed from the start.

Sargent Card, a marine, in the elite Voyagers, with his decimated guardians left to take care of a whole starship. There were supposed to be a hundred of them but after the disastrous takeoff from earth they were left with just a few and that went down to five the first few years. That and the weird research team lead by RileyValentine. Left you wondering who is friend and who is enemy.

Great quality scifi adventure

I HAVE A RULE. Always read another author before reading the next in a series. This collection made me break that rule. I Read all five. Couldn't put them down. This series reads like one big book. Great characters, Consistent story arch and never repeated itself.

Like binging your favourite movie series. Although categorised as military sci fi is much more. Adventure, action honour loss betrayal it has it all.

Just read it you won't regret it even if your not a scifi fan. Good job !r Forbes

Heroic in the Extreme

As could be expected from Forbes, a dazzling tour de force with twists turns and surprises to delight even the most savvy sci-fi buff. I think I love these books so much because his heroes are just so macho…..Alfa +++…..quite the opposite to me. I’m with Lazarus Long who said, (and I paraphrase)……if there’s a battle, I’m going to be a thousand miles away, in a bar, with a girl and a cool drink. Great escapism.

A relatively decent story, even if it didn't go where I expected it would, each book just kept expanding the story arc, which was fine, but the second book took place something like 200 plus years after the first one, and although it turned out to be necessary, that threw me off, and I never quite recovered my equalibrium afterwords, so I didn't enjoy this series quite as much as I might otherwise have done so if there had been a less jarring transition between the first two books.

OUTSTANDING! FIRST RATE!

Incredibly imaginative, intricately detailed, and so smoothly written, you just keep reading no matter how late it gets. And just when you think you've figured out what's coming next, Forbes takes you in an astonishing and delightfully different direction. Can't compare it to anyone else, but I definitely recommend this series to any fan of science fiction, not just military genre. Well done!

Excellent series

Forbes kept me guessing until the very end. I like stories like this, where good triumphs over evil, but that a price must be paid as well.
Great, inspiring characters are rampant in this book and the bad guys are worthy opponents. Beautiful planets and ugly aliens served to entice and enmesh me in the story.
This series was worth the read...I'm going to see what else Forbes has written!

Best Sci-fi Series I've Ever Read!

This was by far the very best written series I have read! M.R. Forbes is an excellent author! I'm looking forward to reading more about Seargent Caleb Card in the Forgotten series. This is definitely a must read for anyone who loves science fiction! I think I read all five books in under two weeks, which is a record for me. I just couldn't stop reading!

A promising start

The sample of the first book in the Forgotten Colony series introduces Sheriff Hayden, whose familiarity with the off-limits strands is not enough to have prevented others from keeping secrets from him. But he’s going to need all his smarts now to learn and overcome those secrets.

Good sifi

Pretty easy to read and not a lot of profanity. I ended up in and out of the hospital for the last 6 months due to heart, back and rotator cuff problems and in between naps, this series kept my mind going and gave me a lot of needed brain activity. Grab the set and enjoy the read!

Women! Go figure.

I'm not a big fan of starting a story in the middle of a battle but here we are. The first 2 book's are confusing so pay attention or you will lose the plot. Characters are great and a lot of loss and sadness but also a lot of at a boy moments. Just be patient because that's the way it is.

Just awesome

This is only the second 5 star rating I've ever given. The more you read the faster the pace gets. Just when you think it can't get any worse, ALL HELL brakes out. If you like aliens versus aliens and select group of Badass Marines versus all of them. Read, read and then read some more.

Another great read

Although I wish I had read these in order, I thoroughly enjoyed this series. It's not always about the destination, sometimes it's the journey. This one is well worth the travels.

Power of the advocate.

Another great piece of writing from M.R. Forbes. Innovative ideas and concepts like the Citadel and the advocate, 3D gravity, alien races. The teleporter on earth and connections to ancient races. Brilliant. Tremendous book. Would make a great film or game.

Exciting story

It took a while to get used to terminology but the story made it with it. I just really hate it though when the ending leaves you with a cliffhanger forcing one to buy the next series.

Editing dropped stars

Interesting story, editing is so bad I bounced. A major keeps getting answered as lt, correctly spelt word, bit it doesn't fit context. Not a bad story, copy editing is a skill not used on this book

Action packed

Wow. Jumping out of the frying pan into the fire and then into a volcano where aliens go from curious, to nasturtium, to abominations. The heroes are more supermen than they are marines.

Gripping from the first page, to the last

Too many box sets have gone unfinished, but I'm happy to say.....this one doesn't get stale, go off track or bore three books in. If you like the first half hour, you'll go right to the end then look for the next installment! 10/10

Awesome Read

Read the whole series and didn't have a single ho-hum moment in it. Fully rounded characters you find yourself associating with, lots of action that's written so that it pulls you in right along with it. A captivating series you won't be able to put down.

Great alien interaction

Several different alien civilizations some coming together and some inalterably determined to rule over all others. Very realistic description of the interaction.

Deus ex machina. When in doubt, someone will come from nowhere to save the day.

You can tell he went back and changed people and roles, like a major being referred to as lieutenant. Not bad for a free read.
