Marc Daniel is the author of Shadow Pack, an urban fantasy novel and first book of the Michael Biörn series. After spending significant amount of time in Ohio, France, and Montana, Marc is currently living in Texas where he writes as a full time hobby.

Marc developed a taste for mystery novels very young, and was definitely hooked to the genre by age 11 after reading Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. The Queen of Crime's unparalleled talent for mystery has had a strong influence on Marc’s desire to write and this is reflected in his novels. His taste for science fiction literature came a couple years later after stumbling upon The Dreaming Jewls by Theodore Sturgeon. Simak, Asimov, Van Vogt, Zimmer Bradley, Wells, Bradburry followed in short order. Marc was 18 when he read Frank Herbert’s Dune, his first space opera, and was immediately fascinated by the genre. He spent the next few years reading Space opera sagas almost exclusively (Herbert, Anderson, Bordage, etc) with the exception of the occasional Agatha Christie. He discovered fantasy much later at age 25 with Tolkien’s Lord Of The Rings trilogy. In the years following, his reading started gravitating more and more towards this literary style. Surprisingly enough, it took Marc another eight years to read his first urban fantasy, Patricia Brigg’s Moon Called, and to realize he wanted more. Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series partially tamed his appetite but his thirst could only be quenched by writing his own series. A year later, Shadow Pack was born.

Marc is currently working on book #2 of the Michael Biörn series and is having way too much fun with the story line.

This book is like a gemstone mine. It has so many interesting and unique elements. Each new item is finding a gem. The plot is so full of surprises that you wonder how you got there when you reach the end. For much of the book it seems there are two plots going on. Don't be surprised when they converge. The characters are very real, and they change their form as new information is revealed. Much of the action takes place at a mountain retreat set in a forest said to be haunted by a ghost. Ghosts, wolves, hidden chambers, the retreat has secrets that continue to be exposed as the story continues. Ethan Archer is the criminal profiler tapped to investigate, but his secretary, Jennifer Mackay, becomes the main investigator and main character. I can't find enough praise for this story.

I am not normally a reader of thrillers. I only got this because of the author's noir urban fantasy series (which are seriously good). This vigilante-based mystery has enough twists and hints to hold any lover of hard-boiled detective thrillers enthralled for hours. It was hard to put this book down, and I can only echo Agent Hansen: "How did you do that?"

This book was a thrill ride. The twists and turns kept going until the very end. I hope this is the start of a series. I really want to see what Ethan and Jennifer can do together to solve other crimes!

Great novel

I found the novel super interesting. The plot original and quite convoluted. It is interesting to the very end when all the loose ends are put together. Great fun.

One of the absolute eat books I've read in a very long time. I'll try not leaving spoilers. Twist after twist. Yes Marc, you did indeed tie the prologue to the story. Book #2 I'll be waiting for. Excellent story telling!

Overall a good idea for a story but not well written and honestly hard to read. Almost didn’t even finish reading it. Jumped all over the place and then wrapped it up in a pretty bow very unrealistically. Giving it 3 stars only bc I can’t do 2.5. The twists are good ideas and show good imagination for the author, just not well thought out or typed out.

The title of this book is very apt. It starts with the disappearance of a nine year old girl from her family’s cabin, deep in the mountains of Montana at the end of December. No clues were found to where she went or it someone managed to take her from her bed. But no sign of her has ever been found, until possibly now. Some twenty years later, some hikers have walked into a hidden cave system. On further investigation in the cave system, explorers have found bones of young children. At about the same time, the young girl’s uncle is found gruesomely murdered in his hotel room. He is a well-known senator and has a strict line on traditional marriage and laws.

Whether this is coincidence, our main characters are soon going to be dragged into this complex storyline. Criminal profiler Ethan Archer used to work with the FBI, working on profiling serial killers and murderers. This ended abruptly with the torture and killing of his wife almost a year ago, from a serial killer they were close to capturing. What he doesn’t know is that there was more to the case than he or any of his colleagues ever knew and he will soon be getting a wake call on this. He no longer has the ability to link obscure clues together like he could previously and has now set up as an investigator and not making a good job of it.

He is running out of savings and most of his money goes on the employment of his secretary, Jennifer. He doesn’t really know much about her, having hired her on the day he found out about his wife’s death, leaving her alone in the office with nothing to do for at least a week. Nearly a year later, he doesn’t know much about her and has never really bothered to find out. He finally gets the chance of a big payout, when he is hired to find out who is blackmailing the Woodrough family, about an event that happen in the late 90’s. He takes Jenifer with him from San Francisco to Montana, over the Christmas holiday season, to question those in the company’s oil production and ranching endeavours, to see if they can find any clues linking to the blackmailing letter received by the company’s lawyer.

They hear tales of the ‘ghost’ in the woods around the cabin they end up at, belonging to the head of the family and where all the branches of the family come to celebrate the holidays with their children. Ethan’s old contact at the FBI is involved with another couple of cases, one which may turn out to be closely linked to the Cowboy, a serial killer they caught. There is now a new serial killer out there, who has been dubbed Casanova, killing women against the normal range of choice someone of his ethnicity. The body count soon starts to rise at the cabin and Ethan and Jennifer find themselves in the midst of the carnage, wondering if there is a killer amongst them. But with attempts to leave being sabotaged, there may well be someone on the outside as well as inside that has their own agenda in action.

Who is trying to kill member so the same family and why are hard to uncover, as the only clues given by the killer are only clear to the family members and not to Ethan. None of the family are giving much away and Ethan must work so much harder to solve the blackmailing case and now the murders that are happening right around him. Nothing much is what it seems and Ethan has the memories of his past to confront and overcome. He was in a dark place after his wife’s death and the killer has a shocking delivery for him on the anniversary of her death. This throws him a curve and with multiple murders and now a second serial killer after him and those close to him again, he needs to get his mojo back and soon!

A great story, with some very surprising twists and turns. The Ghost and the history of the cave locations are intriguing, not what you expect at all. There are dark secrets being hidden almost in plain sight and these may disturb some with a delicate disposition. I was introduced to this author after reading the beginning of his Michael Biorn series and these books are worlds apart, but have the same sense of compulsion to read the book for the reader that you always want when you start a book! A completely different direction, but makes for a fantastic read and I can’t wait to see what other books in this thread that the author will come up with. Hopefully this is just the start for Ethan and Jennifer! I would recommend this book to one and all – it is a wonderful and complex read. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I read this book for a Goodreads Phychology/Thriller book club selection. Although, I was late to the group in reading this book, I was able to complete the book. I will now go back to the group and provide my feedback regarding the book, The Girls Who Went Nowhere.

I found this book an extremely enjoyable book to read. I took my time and thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I was immediately connected to the main characters in The Girls Who Went Nowhere. This book focused on two main characters, a detective and his assistant, and added to the suspense from these characters. There were two main areas of focus with The Girl Who Went Nowhere, but these two focus points, or centers of gravity, melded into the final conclusion in the story. At times in this book, I felt I was reading The Outsider by Stephen King do to a potential supernatural influence in the book. But I like the path of this book versus The Outsider.

As mentioned above, The Girl Who Went Nowhere is a book of two main focus points. The book transitions to the second focus about a third of the way into the book. This is were the pshychological and intrigue phase of the book kicks in as the book focuses on the meat of the story.

Without giving too much of the book away, I will say the middle of the book, although a bit slow at times, was the perfect conduit to a dramatic finish to an outstanding book. I normally do not predict the finish of a book; however, I found myself playing reader detective and I was able to predict the plot of The Girls Who Went Nowhere. The goal of the author is not to play stump the chump. But because I was so focused on the plot of this book, I found myself connected to the characters and I felt I was an integral part of this book. Bravo Zulu to the Mr. Marc Daniel for allowing me to feel so immersed in his book, I felt like I was a character in his book.

I highly recommend The Girl Who Went Nowhere by Marc Daniel. This was one of my favorite books I have read this year.

I received this book free as an Arc copy, and all that was asked in return was an honest review. Wow this was an incredible book it had me glued to my seat, and I could not wait to get back to it to continue reading it  anytime I was called away from it. It was action packed twisting turns, and roller coaster ride with all the thrills, without having to leave my home. I had no clue where this book was heading which is kind of unusual so the ending took me completely by surprise. Which was the one thing I really didn't like about the book was the ending it kind of left me feeling like it was a cliffhanger. I want to know where Jennifer and Ethan went after the ending. That is as much as I can say to prevent spoilers. Hopefully it was designed that way for the next book to come along in the series, and I really hope there is another book in the works to come out and make this a series. Now down to the basics heat scale was a zero, and violence was moderate. World-building is exceptionally well done, and very descriptive just incredible. Characters were very well developed you came to care about these characters as if they were members of your family or friends, and both the storyline and plot line were intricate and well-thought-out. The storyline follows a man who worked for the FBI on a case involving a serial killer who completely destroys the man's life. He is starting to get his life back together when the serial killer enters his life again. Which is when the plot begins to thicken. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries, thrillers, action-packed stories,  and who- done-it's. I cannot say enough about this book how well it was written or about how much I enjoyed it. Marc has a way with storytelling.  This isn't the first book I've read by this author and the other books I've read were just as excellent as this one, and he pulls out all stops  and does not disappoint.

Why would a nine-year-old girl walk out of her parents' cabin in the middle of the night? Why would she abandon the warmth of her bed for the unforgiving cold of a Montana winter? And why was she never seen again?
Twenty years later, her uncle is gruesomely murdered just as the remains of children are discovered hidden inside a cave a few miles from where she disappeared.
Could the timing be a coincidence? Criminal profiler Ethan Archer doubts it, but can he trust his own judgment? Didn’t he lose his touch along with everything else that fateful night when his life was shattered to pieces? Archer hasn’t worked a murder case since and has no desire to start again. But when the body count rises and he finds himself in the killer’s crosshairs, he no longer has a choice.
In a case where nothing is as it seems, can Archer confront the demons of his past and prevent further bloodshed, or will the killer prove too cunning for him?
A riveting mystery full of twists and deceptions that will keep you reading through the night. Read The Girl Who Went Nowhere today and find out why Marc Daniel’s readers keep coming back for more.

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.
Can't wait to read what this author brings out next!
Recommend reading.

So, I have read the first 2 of Marc Daniel's other books in the Michael Biorn (sp?) series. Despite these being fantasy, which isn't really my favourite genre, I still really enjoyed them. When Marc said he was bringing out a different kind of book (I have the privilege of hearing about such things and getting hold if copies before release), I was intrigued. When I heard it was a thriller, my favourite kind of book, I was excited but also worried - could he pull it off?

Wow. This book is terrific. There is a LOT going on here but it doesnt feel messy or incoherent, instead just jam-packed! I dont want to give too much away by talking about specifics but there are some exciting characters and relationships in here and a great balance between the different strands and how the plot unfolds. Masterful. I usually only read at night and listen to podcasts on my commute but ended up taking it with me as I could not put it down. Sure, it's dark (um, it's a thriller?) but nothing gratuitous and, what's rare with this genre, I didn't feel disappointed/underwhelmed by the ending, as so often happens with thus kind of book.

I really loved it and hope Marc writes more!

This book starts with with a scared little girl running into the woods and encountering a frightening beast. She had totally disappeared after that time, and was presumed dead. Fast forward to the present and we encounter Ethan Archer, a has-been private investigator who avenges women who have been mistreated and raped by men. He is hired as an investigator by Gwendoline Thomas, whose family business has been targeted by a blackmailer. This begins his journey to a cabin in Montana where members of the wealthy Woodrough family are murdered one by one. Woven in the book are several other plot lines, such as a sadistic serial killer, formerly know as the Cowboy, but now as Casanova. As the story progresses, the serial killer and the Woodrough clan begin to converge upon each other. This book is suspenseful and terrifying, and the book concludes in a very unexpected manner. I was hooked on the story and had trouble putting it down. This book would make a great movie. I highly recommend it to all fans of suspense and mystery. I obtained this advance readers copy through Booksprout.

This book was phenomenal! Kept me on the edge of my seat, full of action and I NEVER guessed who the real killer could be! It starts off with a nine-year-old girl disappearing into the Montana evening during Winter. The characters took on a life of their own! Jennifer and Ethan work as boss and assistant at his P.I. practice. His wife was murdered one year earlier and the killer was caught and killed in prison. Only, one year later, he received a video of the whole time they had her…and there was more than one! Now, Ethan had to discover who the other party was! He is also hired by an attorney to discover the blackmailer of her family. That leads into putting himself and his assistant, Jennifer in danger! Now, they are stuck in Montana at the woman’s family cabin with other family members and killers on the prowl~ Who is it? What do they want? How does it all tie in together? Trust me, you do not want to miss this exciting journey…I received this as an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review.

A nine year old girl goes missing. She walks out of her home in the Montana cold never to be seen again. Twenty years later her Uncle is murdered coinciding with the discovery of a cave with the remains of children. Criminal profiler Ethan Archer is given the case but is reluctant to be involved until circumstances force his hand.
This a suspenseful psychological thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The characters are expertly crafted and draw you into the story, engaging you until the end. This was a wonderful exciting thriller that is full of twists, surprising turns and suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat right until the very end. This is a wonderfully written book with a great narrative, excellent dialogue with a storyline that flows smoothly and is filled with action, thrills and chills. It is a fantastic book, that is definitely worth the read.

This is an interesting change from Daniel's fantasy fiction novels. The Girl Who Went Nowhere is a fascinating read in the murder mystery/serial killer genre that leaves you satisfied by the outcome but still asking what's next. The story keeps you guessing as it is full of red herrings to throw you off your game while leaking enough clues to have you ever wondering and wanting to know more. As like many books involving serial killers, the subject matter is quite intense particularly since children are involved. However, unlike other novels in this genre, I was not left mortified or with a bad taste in my mouth. Daniels does a good job tying story lines together, validating character choices, and creating a sense of justice being served in the end. TG2WN is a fun read that is hard to put down.

***WARNING*****RAPE OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN****SEXUAL TORTURE*****

I received a free copy of this book from Hidden Gems in exchange for an honest review.

I wish this book had come with a warning (if it did, I somehow missed it) because I would have passed on it if it had. The story was decent, and I liked the 2 main characters. But it seems like there was too much going on, too many mysteries and subplots and characters intertwined. It all came together in the end, but the way it kept jumping around left my head spinning. That being said, I could have done without the descriptions of the rape and torture. Sadly, the things from this book that stuck with me, are visuals I wish I could forget. Overall, for me the story would have been much better without the graphic details. Sometimes things are best left to the imagination, and this is definitely one of those times.

Ethan's wife was murdered and feel into a deep well of revenge against anyone that hurt women. He left his job in law enforcement and opened his own PI business. He is hired to investigate a blackmail of a family with his co-worker Jennifer and was quickly brought subjected to several murders of the family members he was working for. The depravity of the family was revealed in bits and pieces until final climatic ending. There were so many twists and turns the story that kept you glued to find out the whole story with a surprise ending. There were a few parts that didn't fit the storyline, but overall the story was very engaging. There are some parts that are disturbing, but if you get past them it is a good mystery. I enjoyed the build up of the story and didn't see the end coming. I received an ARC and I voluntarily reviewed this book.

The Girl Who Went Nowhere was an entertaining book filled with twists and turns. It did contain graphic violence and many different scenarios with an original storyline. The story begins when 20 years ago a 9-year-old girl walks out of her parent’s cabin and never returns. Why did she disappear on a cold Montana winter?
It is now 20-years later that the girl’s uncle is murdered and children’s remains are found in a cave near the cabin. Ethan Archer is a criminal profiler whose wife was murdered brutally by a serial killer a year ago. It shattered his life, so he wasn’t sure if he was up to the case but when the murders increase, he is drawn in and he no longer has a choice but to find the killer.
Ethan Archer and his assistant, Jennifer and his FBI friend together work the cases to find the serial killer. It was a very readable and intriguing thriller.

The Girl Who Went Nowhere is a group of seemingly disparate stories, which all wind up in the same place.

The plots:
-The failed detective
-The mysterious secretary
-The family corporation being blackmailed
-The Cowboy and/or Casanova killer
-The Ghost
-The holiday gathering in the remote cabin that reads like an Agatha Christie novel

And those are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head! The book was long and I was glad about that because I didn't want the story to end. This story is not for those with a weak stomach as it touches upon some of the more baseless people in society, which some might find disturbing. But nothing was gratuitous; everything had a purpose to the plot.

And then there's the ending you won't see coming. This book will haunt you long after you've finished reading.

Thanks to Hidden Gems Books for a copy for review.

OMG!! what a book! the premise of the disappearance of a 9-year-old girl fades quickly when you are reading this book. it turns to blackmail at the woodrough ranch. that, too, passes. when the murders begin, that is when the suspense and crimes come to light. they are a family of psychopaths and child-molesting rapists. i believe i counted a minimum of six modes of murder in the book. matthew's death is the most original and most horrific but it couldn't have happened to a better character! comparable to agatha christie, this is a book i will never forget and i am anxiously awaiting marc daniel's next "in the woods."

WOW! What a ride!

Loved, loved, loved this book! First book I have read by this author...but if his other books are half as good as this one, I will read them all. I wish I could have given it 10 stars. This book grabbed me from the beginning and never let go! I have read many great books in my life but this is definitely in the top ten. I loved how the character Jennifer slowly evolved. And maybe it's sick...but I really loved Ethan's final revenge. But the ending was was such a shock...a great shock. What an extremely talented writer. There is so much more I could say...but I don't want to give anything away. Now, I must go in and look up his other books. I do believe he has made me less interested in some of my other favorite authors.

This book was easily readable and highly enjoyable. The story starts with the disappearance of a little girl and transitions over to the main character Ethan Archer who is a one-time famous criminal profiler for the FBI, now a has-been private detective, who has experienced some past trauma and fallen on hard times. Things are not as they appear--the story is stocked with various twists and thrills. The plot flows smoothly and the characters are fleshed out. This novel is slightly darker compared to Marc's past works, but for those who like to read the mystery-thriller genre, I would recommend it.

Wow!

What a unique storyline! I love murder mysteries and psychological thrillers. This book has both. There are a lot of twists and turns through out the book. It grabbed me at the beginning and never let go. I loved the characters, especially the main male and female, Jennifer and Ethan. The characters are very well developed and believable. The dialogue flows freely and smoothly. The editing is clean with very few grammatical or spelling errors. This is the first book of this author I have read but I have already downloaded the second book. I will follow this author for any new books. I would recommend this book to adults due to the level of violence.

The book is complex and dark. Although I love mysteries and thrillers the “drawing room reveal” of whodunnit is dated. There is a lot of death, sexual predators/pedophiles and bad people in power and it just got to be too much at times. If you like cringing while reading this is a great book for you.
There’s not much more I can say without revealing spoilers.

In spite of “The Big Reveal” in the Epilogue, which feels very much like an Agatha Christie nod, I was disappointed in the ending. Again spoilers.

The Narration was good and added to story. Although I really think there are readers who would enjoy this book I personally am not one them. It was just “too much” for me.

This is the first work I've read by this author. The story description grabbed my attention and since I love a good mystery and suspense story, I thought I'd read and review it. Needless to say I was not disappointed. The story lived up to it's description and then some. The characters are well developed and the story line has plenty of suspense to keep you turning the pages. Once you start reading, you'll find it hard to put it down until you finish it.

This is a great mystery with a complex plot. So many intertwining events and plotlines, it kept me reading until the small hours to finish it. One part is a bit of an Agatha Christie-type scenario - group of people trapped and being picked off one by one with little clues as to why; the denouement is a Sherlock Holmes type ending where all is explained. which forces you mentally review all the little details that add up to the eventual conclusion. I didn't guess at the likely ending - didn't see it coming. A real page-turner. Recommended. I was given a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.

This book starts out with a young girl mysteriously disappearing in the mountains of Montana. Eventually, a criminal profiler, Ethan Archer, and his assistant get involved with the case, which takes them from San Francisco, CA to Montana. This book is full of many twists!! There seemed to be two different storylines at first and eventually you learn how they are connected. Just when you think the book is wrapping up with the mystery solved, new twists are thrown into the mix before the end!!

This is my first time reading anything by this author. The blurb caught my attention and the book lived up to it. I found this book to be difficult to put down once I had started reading it.
