Somebody Like You brought me pretty much all I could want from a romantic read and, with a wonderful small town vibe in a beautiful setting, is a promising start to the Darling, VT series.

"You have a thing for gingers. And you have to admit, I grew up kinda good."

With an engaging writing style, Donna Alward introduces us to the endearing residents who will feature throughout the series. First up is Darling's town cop, Aiden and divorcee and returning resident, Laurel, who grew up together and were the town's poster children, only for it to turn sour when they were teenagers.

"When I start something with you,” he said, “I intend to finish it. Alone. Without interruptions."

With their years apart leading to somewhat calmer waters between them, it soon becomes evident that Laurel and Aiden still have a natural chemistry bubbling away between them, and she slowly begins to lower her defences and let him in, although he's also careful of his own heart. And in keeping with their hometown, these characters were indeed, darlings.

description

With the romance coming with a sprinkling of angst and drama, it wasn't entirely plain sailing and there were a couple of moments when Laurel's actions frustrated a little, but I have to say it actually played out far better than I anticipated. And with plenty of emotion--because there were some moments that wrenched the old heartstrings--this really was a book I struggled to part myself from.

"You make me want to be a better person."

I already have the next two books in the series ready and waiting for me and I can't wait to see what lies in store for Aiden's brothers, Ethan and Rory.

4.5 - "I'll see you at the Kissing Bridge..." Stars!

Somebody Like You; the first book in Donna Alward’s new series take the reader to the town and residents of Darling, Vermont.

I really enjoyed the second-chance romance between Laurel and Aiden, both of them have grown and changed in the nine years that she has been away from town, that her return brings to the fore feelings that both of them had thought were long extinguished, but while one of them tentatively embraces those re-emerging feelings, the other is wary of getting burnt again.

Memories were powerful things. Sometimes the body remembered what the heart would rather forget…

Laurel’s reasons for returning to Darling and opening The Ladybug Garden Centre are gossip fodder for the town in general, and Aiden soon works out that he is going to have to take things slowly with her if he wants to progress from the no-strings fun she is insistent on, to something deeper, especially as they were more enemies than friends when she moved away due to a silly bet he agreed to be a part of as a teenager.

"It’s starting to become a personal mission to win you over."

This sort of story, series, characters and general reading experience is something I have found myself gravitating to much more lately, I like a bit of drama and angst, and the author skilfully interweaves it into this couples reconnection, but it doesn’t detract from the overall feeling of enjoyment that I take away from my reading experience, because it isn’t the main focus of the story.

"I said the wrong things last time… Did all the wrong things."

The secondary characters make a big impact too, and the author utilizes their input to great effect. The Gallagher family look to be the main focus of the forthcoming books, but you are introduced to a couple of the other forthcoming main characters as well, that you just know the longer you read the deeper the connection as a reader you are going to feel to the series.

"You’re smitten… It was true ten years ago and its true now."

I have to say that I am absolutely loving all these ‘small town / big impact’ contempory romances that St. Martins Press and its authors seem to be getting right time and time again lately, and I am glad that I am being given the opportunity to read so many of them. The storylines offer up easy to get along with tropes and characters, everything is kept moving at a steady place and the set-ups and locations just pull you in and keep you happily entertained until you finish the last page.

"You should dream… You should always have dreams."

I have already lined up the next book in the series Somebody to Love on my Kindle, and I am so happy to see that after its release in March, we are getting to revisit again in April for the release of Somebody’s Baby, I have certainly started 2017 with a smile on my face with this news, and I expect this series to be one of my favourites of the year if the first book is anything to go by.

A quick and easy romance read with a unique plot foundation.

Laurel has returned to Darling, VT, following a devastating revelation and divorce and has opened a nursery. After a horrific act of vandalism, she reencounters Aiden, a man with whom she has a significant history, not the least being of the two of them kissing on the town's famous Kissing Bridge at age 5. Asked to recreate the photo twenty years down the road, and Laurel and Aiden must come to terms with their painful past and look forward to their potential future.

Unfortunately, for me, the novel fell far short of its interesting premise. Perhaps the most difficult aspect of this book was that I realized a third of the way in that I didn't like either of the main characters, and this persisted for the rest of the story. Laurel is a woman who has a problem where she allows herself to be trodden for the sake of others, and she never grows from this, never takes a stand for herself. Aiden constantly is presented as a good man, but there seems to be no evidence when it comes to his actual actions . He also seems to steamroll Laurel despite saying she should stand up for herself .

I struggled to get through the rest of this book, and I unfortunately didn't enjoy most of it. The plot felt rushed, the romance contrived, and the characters one-dimensional.

Thanks to the publisher for an ARC in exchange for a fair review.

I am such a sucker for small town romances and this book by Ms. Alward hit all the right notes for me. I enjoyed the journey that the two main characters (Laurel Stone and Aiden Gallagher) went through to get their HEA in the end.

Laurel and Aiden have a history. Aiden has always had a thing for Laurel but after making a bad decision in regards to her when they were in high school, something Laurel could not forgive, they both moved on with their lives. That is until Laurel moved back to her hometown after her divorce. Now with trouble happing at her garden shop and with Aiden being a police officer. they are running into each other more and more.

This is a laid back, easy to enjoy story. As a start of a new series I am now eagerly anticipating the next book to see what happens next in this darling small town…

Somebody Like You was a very enjoyable and heartwarming second chance love story.

Laurel and Aiden were likable, relatable and entertaining characters. From the first few pages I knew these two still had strong feelings for each other and it wasn't going to be easy to put the past behind them to love unconditionally without the fear of being hurt again.

Author Donna Alward has given us a well written, heartfelt second chance love story with characters that will bring out all the feels. Overall, a great start to the Darling, VT series.

I have a new romance author! I'd read about Ms. Alward's books on some of the blogs I follow and they sounded appealing so when the chance to read this book, the first in a new series, came up, I said yes. I'm glad I did. I was caught from the first chapter and didn't want to put the story down. Alward's writing was engaging, warm, and straight-forward, it lured me in.

"Somebody Like You" is a second chance and a small town romance. We get to see both the good and the bad of small town living, such as the gossiping and paying attention to everyone else's business, homelessness, and the sense of community and willingness to help your neighbor.

Aiden humiliated Laurel and broke her heart in high school and she in turn humiliated him. Years later, she returns home where's he now a local cop. She has a hard time at first forgiving him for his actions and I worried that their past would be a big barrier. While it did cause some problems for them, they were adults and talked. They sat down and tried to work things out. It was interesting to see their different perspectives on each other. Once Laurel gets past her hurt, she can see the changes in Aiden, and how he's matured. He can see how Laurel has changed and the barrier she's put up as the result of her marriage and subsequent divorce. I was a little dismayed at how quickly Laurel got heavily involved so soon after her divorce; I'd have liked to see her spend more time on her own and putting herself back together before getting seriously involved again. That said, she does deal with the emotional fallout and Aiden helps her.

Their romance is sweet and thoughtful. They take care of each other, help each other, fight but make up, and work well together. The ending was a bit over the top for my liking but I'm not a fan of surprises or grand gestures. I did guess what was going on and kind of hoped that I was wrong, but Alward pulled it off and I was cheering them on. Alward created sympathetic, likable characters and I'm already looking at the different people going, "He needs a story and she needs a story and, ooh, what's his story? (I'm looking at you George!)" LOL I liked Darling, Vermont and the people in it. I want to know more and can't wait to spend time there again; fortunately the next book is out next month. Time to stalk NetGalley!

If you like sweet romances that aren't overly cute, with a little bit of steam, mature characters who make mistakes but own up to them, and small town settings pick up "Somebody Like You". It'll make you smile, and happy cry.

Favorite Quotes:

I’m probably the last person on earth you want to start anything with. But Laurel? What just happened was just about perfect. You’re just about perfect. And I’m gonna go now before I have the chance to mess anything up.

Tell that to the teenaged girls who came in last night. They thought it was very cool to have all-natural, vegan, free trade, ecologically responsible food. So cool that they posted all sorts of pictures of it on their phones while wearing clothes that were probably produced in some Bangladesh sweatshop.

I love you, so much I probably always have, and you scare me to death, but I’m man enough now to tell you and be at your mercy.

She wasn’t sure how a heart could break and heal all at the same time, but those words seemed to accomplish it.

My Review:

Somebody Like You was my first Donna Alward reading experience, although I plan to repeat this pleasant task again and again. Written from my favorite dual POV, I was entertained and engaged throughout with a storyline that was easy to follow, relevant, observantly detailed, and emotive. The primary and secondary characters were flawed yet likable, as well as intriguing and complex. Given the end result of humiliating and emotionally devastating betrayals from the two times she had given her heart, Laurel was disillusioned with relationships and understandably, was more than bit angry and plagued with trust issues. She was prickly, feisty, and fiercely independent - she pretty much had to be as she was starting over as a small business owner. The vast majority of women worldwide could relate to her issues at least once in their lifetime… The plot had several thoughtful and intriguing threads that were unique and interesting in how they connected to the overall premise. The story is a first in a series stand-alone and has me looking forward to many return trips to Darling, Vermont.

Rosalie's review:

Laurel Stone has recently returned to her home of Darling, Vermont after a rather nasty (and interesting) divorce. Wanting to settle down and grow roots exactly where she grew up was exactly what she has always wanted to do. And she is in charge of her own destiny, so that's EXACTLY what she is going to do.

Aiden Gallagher is a police officer, and kinda high school sweetheart of Laurel, in quiet Darling. Having had a mishap in high school through a bet with Laurel has led to many regrets that Aiden had not really had a chance to ever fix; that is until Laurel moved back to town. Now to find out a way to make up for the childish bet he followed through on the girl he had the biggest crush on in school...the one who got away....

A police call made when Laurel comes into her business, The Ladybug Garden Center, has the one and only Aiden coming to check it out (and hopefully to her rescue). Aiden would like nothing more that for the town's infamous photo on their Kissing Bridge, of the two of them at five years old kissing sweetly, to be recreated. Laurel isn't so sure, even when pushed into it. Will dragging up the past, when it hurt her so much, help the future with the ever so sexy Aiden, or cause even more hurt and problems?

This was a really sweet read. Sometimes, Aiden came off as a typically jerky man, but for me, it made me feel like this book was more real (what man is perfect and says the perfect, romantic thing 100% of the time??!!). I loved the chemistry between the two, the towns pushing the inevitable, and the family meddling (all knowing what would eventually happen). Redemption at it's finest in this one!

After the pretty crappy week I have had, Somebody Like You was just the thing I needed to cheer things up a little bit.

Aiden and Laurel's story is sweet, adorable second chance at love story. They have a history since early childhood and now as adults they are thrown back in each other's lives.

I love the snark and bite, especially from Laurel. I can hold a grudge with the best of them, but wowee Laurel is the master!

I am not going to lie, Laurel did annoy me at times. She would lash out at people who didn't deserve it, she was good at closing herself off from those who love her. I get why, I do, but she still frustrated me.

But Aiden, he's that guy. Knows he messed up, knows he's gotta fix it, and goes above and beyond to do it.

I loved how their relationship grew throughout the story, even with tall the small town meddling (believe me I live in a small town and boy can they meddle and gossip!) It takes a while for our lovelies to get there but get there they do.

There are some great secondary characters, but I was left with many questions at the end of this book - but knowing there are a couple more books to come I know they will be answered all in good time. But I need to know now!!

Ms Alward has written a beautiful, descriptive story that has me hankering to visit Vermont. Not wure what it is about Vermont lately, but in the past couple of weeks I have read so many new stories set there!

Now I am impatiently awaiting the second book, Somebody To Love.

This is the first book I have ever read by Donna Alward and I have to say it featured one of the most romantic endings I have ever read! I absolutely loved the way the relationship with Laurel and Aiden developed.
Laurel is returning home after her the collapse of her marriage and wants nothing more to move on with her life. However, when she opens a new business in town, vandals strike forcing her to deal with her teenage crush, Aiden. She's still not ready to forgive Aiden for high school heartbreak so it's easy to see she has gotten over her marriage either. And life in a small town, means that Laurel is forced to deal with her past whether she is ready or not. With great supporting characters like Willow and George, there is definitely room for more books in this series.

My favourite quotes from this story:

'Sometimes the body remembered what the heart would rather forget.'

'Laurel wore her heart on her sleeve. It had been that way in high school, the other morning when she'd barely held back tears after the store had been robbed, and moments ago when she'd spoken about her husband ...'

'It's time I stopped caring about stupid stuff and focused on being happy.'

After her divorce, Laurel Stone moved from the city back to her small, neighbourly, peaceful hometown Darling, Vermont and ran the Ladybug Garden Centre for a fresh start. When the handsome copper haired police officer responded to her 911 call, Laurel felt conflicting emotions. Aiden Gallagher was the other five-year old in the photo of them kissing on The Kissing Bridge. The photo has been prominently displayed in the Town Hall and used to promote tourism for the past twenty-three years.
Laurel dumped a vanilla milkshake over Aiden's head after he humiliated her when they were seventeen. These past shared experiences caused tension and awkwardness between them.
Can Aiden and Laurel forgive each other and become friends?
Will Laurel make The Ladybug Garden Centre a success?
Will Laurel be able to leave the past behind and move forward?
Will she renew friendships and be happy in Darling?
Who is vandalizing the property in Darling?

This book is well written and the storyline flows seamlessly with several twists and turns to keep the reader interested and in suspense. Donna Alward has skillfully created many diversified inhabitants for the town of Darling. I enjoyed meeting and getting to know these likeable characters, especially Laurel, Aiden, Willow Dunaway, Moira Gallagher and George.

As this is the first novel in the Darling series, I look forward to reading the next two - Someone to Love and Someone's Baby.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys humorous romantic novels with a twist or is looking for a palate cleanser after some heavy reading.

Thanks to St. Martin's Press, NetGalley and the author, Donna Alward for an ARC of Somebody Like You in exchange for an honest review.

Reviewed for Romancing the Readers Blog: http://romancingthereaders.blogspot.c...

Donna Alward is a new author for me. I've seen her books before and thought about reading them but never took the time to do so. I'm not really sure why? I think it had to do with the fact that I thought they wouldn't be the type of books that I would like.

I couldn't have been more wrong!

I really enjoyed Somebody Like You. I found it very easy to read and well-written. I also loved her characters. Somebody Like You is the first book in her Darling VT series. I've never read a book based in Vermont (or at least I don't remember doing so) so that was different. I enjoyed the small-town feel to it.

I LOVE, LOVE the idea of two little ones taking a picture on a bridge and the town using it as their town photo! So sweet and cute! I also loved how they wanted to update the photo with the two people as adults. Great idea!

Or it should have been. Of course that little girl and boy no longer talk.

You'll enjoy the ride of Aiden and Laurel. It takes them a long time to get over their past and forgive each other, but when they do they realize what they really want...each other. So much happens in the book that I'd love to talk about but I don't want to ruin the story for you. And the ending is....WONDERFUL!!!!

I really loved the twist! I really can't wait to read Someone Like You which is out March 7th! That will give you plenty of time to read Somebody Like You!

Very good second chance story. When they were five years old, Laurel and Aiden were photographed kissing on the legendary Kissing Bridge. When they were in high school, their brief romance ended when Aiden made a stupid mistake, hurting and humiliating Laurel, which led to some humiliation for Aiden. The town uses the photograph to promote its tourism, and someone has come up with the idea to recreate the photo. Aiden is willing, but Laurel is much harder to convince. Laurel returned to Darling after her divorce, determined to move on. She is happy and busy, reconnecting with friends and getting her new garden center up and running. The last thing she wants to do is get involved with Aiden, who she has still not forgiven.

I enjoyed the development of Laurel and Aiden's relationship. It starts out a bit rough, as their first encounter is when police officer Aiden responds to a report of vandalism at Laurel's business. Aiden is professional but friendly, ready to move past their teenage idiocy. Laurel realizes that she is still holding on to the past when Aiden makes a point of apologizing. Aiden is drawn to the grown-up Laurel's beauty, both inside and out, and wants to spend more time with her. Laurel is drawn to Aiden also, but her divorce has made her very wary of getting involved with someone else. I really loved seeing them get to know each other. Laurel is kindhearted and sweet, which sometimes works against her when others take advantage. She struggles with the effect her divorce has had on her dreams for the future and her confidence in herself. This creates a conflict in her relationship with Aiden, as she tries to deny her growing feelings for him to protect her heart. Aiden is patient, sweet and charming as he works his way past Laurel's walls. The dates he came up with showed just how much he understood her. There is also a vulnerability to him, as we see him have trouble expressing his feelings and suffer from the occasional "foot-in-mouth" moment. I loved how they slowly opened up to each other, sharing their hurts as well as the good times. I ached for Aiden when he shared his feelings for Laurel, and her fears made her push him away. It took working together to help a friend to close that divide. Laurel also had to face the fears that were holding her back. Aiden's big moment at the end was romantic and awesome.

I loved the small town setting and the characters that live there. The secondary characters were unique and well developed. I loved Aiden's relationship with his family members, with their teasing and nosiness and obvious love for each other. I loved the little bits that showed Aiden purposely doing some things to irritate his brother Rory. I also loved how the family quickly pulled Laurel into their circle. Laurel's friend Willow was a blast with her new agey style and direct attitude. She was always there for Laurel, even when Laurel didn't realize it. I loved her parts in helping Aiden. My favorite character was the homeless man, George. I loved how we first witness Aiden's kindness and sensitivity in the way that he treats George, and how that attitude rubs off on Laurel. I loved watching the changes in George as he benefits from their actions. Like Laurel and Aiden, I wanted to know more about who he was and what brought him to Darling. I loved George's interactions with them, especially the conversations that he and Lauren had. I felt Lauren's fear for him when he was missing and her determination to find him.

This was a clean romance read. I enjoyed this second chance romance between Aidan and Laurel. I warmed up to Aidan right away. I liked that he wasn't afraid to pursue Laurel, even when she was trying to put distance between them. That slow build up between them created that extra connection I like to see in romances. The chemistry was there but it wasn't the only thing between them.

Laurel is someone burned by love and is not looking to try her luck at it again. When Aidan comes back into her life, it's like the rug is pulled out from underneath her. She is largely in denial and mistrustful of Aidan, but mostly of her own feelings. She is a genuinely nice person, she just has some emotional baggage to with before trusting herself and her heart again.

At times it felt like Laurel was too hard on Aidan yet so forgiving to her ex. Someone that in my opinion, betrayed her and treated (and kept treating) her much worse. I felt like all the pushing away she did over something that happened when they were teens was a bit OTT. Compared to her ex, Aidan's sins weren't that unforgivable. The drama Laurel created with her stubbornness robbed some of that charm and sweet romance from the story. I felt like she dragged her feet way too long, up until the very end. Aidan really stuck it out for her, he was persistent and determined, and that's what made me stick with the story. Aidan was a great H, along with the numerous side characters.

Laurel's friend Willow was awesome, Aidan's brothers and sisters too. Struggling George was a great side character that I hope we see more of *wink wink* or his own book in this series later, maybe? Over all, this was a sweet, slightly angsty read. Although I liked one MC more than the other, I was still able to enjoy it and it was a great opening to a new series!

Safety: 100% safe, fade to black love scenes and ends in a HEA with no epilogue.

Laurel Stone and Aiden Gallagher have a lot of history, some of it good, some of it not so good. First as children in a picture that has become the iconic representation of the town of Darling, Vermont; then as high school friends and later enemies. Both have also gotten a few life experiences under the belts. For Lauren, having her marriage end in a tabloid-style way and having to return home was not part of her plans, but she's making the best of her situation and trying to deal with her emotional wounds. Aiden is a constant reminder of the heartbreak and humiliation he dealt her back in high school and her revived feelings for him are very inconvenient.

Aiden has always regretted the role he played in the fallout with Laurel, but never got a chance to apologize, but fate has given him the perfect opportunity to do so and spending time with her only increases the intensity of his feelings for her.

Okay, this book was all kinds of cute and sweet and fun, but it was also a bit emotional for me. Laurel's struggle to deal with her sense of betrayal by her ex-husband, the blow her self-confidence and self-esteem and having to keep her head up in the face of the gossip and everything going on, got to me. Aiden was one of the few that saw through the facade she put up to the hurt beneath and really put himself out there to earn her forgiveness for the juvenile stunt he pulled.

Both Laurel and Aiden experience a lot of personal growth and I enjoyed how they supported each other. Like there wasn't enough between Aiden and Laurel to make you tear up, the way both of them reached out to a homeless man and gave him some dignity was so heartwarming and also a clear example the kind of good and caring people they were.

The ending was straight out of a fairy-tale and just perfect for them as a couple and hit all the high notes for me - family, friendship, community, emotion and romance. This book made my heart hurt and then smile. SOMEBODY LIKE YOU is a really great start to this series and I can't wait for the rest of the series.

Laurel is back in her hometown, Darling. She's the proud owner of the Ladybug Garden Center and she has a nice and cozy house. She used to be an accountant, but after being betrayed by her now ex-husband, who also was her colleague, Laurel needed a fresh start. She's quite famous in Darling because of a photograph. She and her childhood friend Aiden were captured when they gave each other a sweet kiss on Darling's well-known Kissing Bridge when they were five years old. Unfortunately their friendship came to an end when Aiden hurt Laurel when they were seventeen. Living in Darling means Laurel will be seeing Aiden again and the feelings she had for him never entirely disappeared.

Aiden hurt Laurel when they were teenagers and he still regrets his decisions from back then. He now works as a police officer in town and when he meets Laurel because of his job he's impressed by her strength and natural beauty and wants to spend more time with her. Will he be able to make up for what he did to her in the past? Laurel has built some firm walls around her heart and Aiden wants nothing more than to break them down. Will they get their second chance or is Laurel too guarded to let him in?

Somebody Like You is a wonderful story about two people who are perfect for each other. Laurel is nice to everyone, she treats people with nothing but kindness and respect and then tends to forget herself in the process. She's very sweet and positive. After being hurt several times she still believes people are good. Aiden isn't a smooth talker, he often says the wrong thing and expressing feelings is something that makes him afraid. With Laurel it feels different though and that was endearing to see. He is a generous and sympathetic person. He and Laurel are both amazing people who deserve nothing but the best. They are impressive, have a deep connection, understand each other and have plenty of sparks. Laurel and Aiden were adorable when they were five years old and they never really lost that charm, which is something I enjoyed a lot about Somebody Like You. Reading about this friendly couple put a big smile on my face.

Donna Alward knows how to write moving love stories. Somebody Like You is special from beginning to end and I had tears in my eyes when I read the beautiful romantic last few chapters, they are absolutely incredible. Somebody Like You is precious, it's a gorgeous story. I highly recommend it because of the pleasant atmosphere, the warm and welcoming town, the dreamy love story and the big hearts of the main characters.

Total waste! So disappointed!

I didn't even finish this. I liked the characters right off the bat but Laurel's actions made her out to be some kind of saint that just wasnt realistic with what she'd gone through. She's returned home to Darling, Vermont to lick her wounds. The man she loved, had married, and was planning on spending the rest of her life with had announced he was gay, divorced her, and was now with another guy. We're told how devastated Laurel is, how humiliating this was for her and we're reminded repeatedly that she really, really loved Dan. So when she gets home and opens her garden store, she crosses paths with Aiden, a lawman, who also humiliated her when they were in high school. He'd only gone out with her to win some kind of bet with his buddies. Fortunately, she discovered the truth before things got too out of hand. However, she was truly hurt by what he did.

When they meet again after all these years, she agrees to forgive him when he apologizes. Not so bad. Several years have gone by. She's matured and moved on. Its entirely possible she's past the hurt now.

Then Dan calls her. Keep in mind she's still reeling from his betrayal and she LOVED him. Dan tells her he and his new partner, Ryan, are getting married - in Darlington - where Laurel grew up and is now living and he wants her to do the landscape around where they are marrying in the park. Spruce it up with some plants and flowers!!!!! NO WAY IN H#+$! Remember, the author has told you numerous times that she loved Dan, how much he'd hurt her.

She agrees! Like it's no big deal. As casually - and without one harsh word - as if she'd agreed to meet a friend for a Coke! If I'd had an actual book in my hands I would have thrown it across the room!

I was done at this point and so disappointed I'm not sure I can ever read anything by this author again. I feel as though I'm the one who's been betrayed. This was totally unbelievable and out of character for the way the heroine was originally portrayed. And it almost feels like the author had a hidden agenda - to get her politically correct viewpoint regarding gay marriage across in the process. It just didn't feel right to me and left me with a bad taste in my mouth. If the author hadn't pounded home how Laurel originally felt about Dan's actions I might have been able to get by it. If she'd said Laurel had realizes she wasn't completely invested in their marriage either or if more time had passed and she had gotten past the hurt then okay. But as it was written, no. A terrible disappointment.

Ugh... So I wasn't entirely sold and I felt myself yawning a bit with this romance. It's interesting that the author makes the main characters share history when they were five and they innocently kissed on the bridge. But I felt Darling (the town) had to be so boring to focus so much on that remarkable moment and blowing it up into some tourist attraction. It's so dull that even the teens act out to make their town seem intriguing.

What irked me the most of course is Laurel. Goodness! Gosh! Heck!

...

The author did a phenomenal job making her a bleeding doormat, but there isn't much redemption for her. She doesn't stand up for herself for long and is pretty much pushed into doing things for all her loved ones. Because she's a fucking saint...

Aiden was a little iffy. He blames his past behavior almost in a "boys will be boys" way. Even though it did happen in high school and it was a while ago, I still wouldn't brush off his dickish behavior even if he was younger. Even if he did change, there wasn't much of an apology for excusing it for being a teenage boy. Although I'm happy he does point out to Laurel that she basically is too spineless to stand up to anyone and had to do it for her. Basically, he had to serve her hand and foot several times.

Getting back to the town, it must be so dull there that they have to dig into each other's lives and make it into a soap opera. I liked Willow and George. Their hidden lives seem more interesting and I don't blame them for using Laurel's drama to cover up their dark pasts.

I read romance for the Happily Ever After, and I know that Donna Alward is going to provide that. As always, she did not disappoint.
Laurel and Aiden had been flower girl and ring bearer at a wedding in their youth, and later high school sweethearts. Until, that is, Laurel dumped a milkshake on Aiden in anger. (Not that he didn’t deserve it!)
Now they are adults in their home town; and despite the dramatic parting of ways in high school, they can’t deny the attraction between them when they meet again.
However, Laurel is a recent divorcee and Aiden had run terrified from a long term relationship. Thoroughly enjoyed watching how they work past their histories to find their own HEA.
This is the first in a new series by Donna, and I can’t wait to read the rest!

After The Playboy Prince and the Nanny, The Crown Prince's Bride (Royal Duology 1 &2) and Deck The Halls, all Donna Alward books I reviewed in the past, I was overjoyed to receive the audiobook of Somebody Like You.

Somebody Like You has great attention to detail, and is very romantic. Realistic storyline and characters. Aiden and Laurel had interesting backstories and plotlines. There are hard times as well as romantic moments.
The narrator was perfect for the book.

Overall, Somebody Like You was an amazing start to a new series, and I am looking forward to the next books.

Thanks to Donna Alward, HQN and Rachel's Random Resources for my audiobook in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

A second chance romance in a small town setting of Darling, Vermont. Loved the rekindling of the romance between Aiden and Laurel, they soon found the sparks were still there after failed relationships. I really enjoyed the story of the kissing bridge, from when they were five years old and how the city wanted to update their picture. With a little added mystery of a robbery, it makes for a perfect read. I highly recommend this book, can't wait to read the next book in the series.

"Those who stood on the bridge and sealed their love with a kiss would be together forever."

FINAL DECISION:  A book with a wonderful sense of heart, I absolutely loved this one.  Wholesome and sweet with just enough humor and angst to keep the story exciting, my first Donna Alward novel made me immediately preorder the rest of the series so that I can find out the fates of the other characters.

THE STORY:  Laurel Stone has returned to her hometown after a failed marriage which necessitated a change in careers.  Laurel now owns the Ladybug Garden Center which is reconnecting her with the outdoors that she loved growing up.  Laurel's return to Darling also ends up reconnecting her to Aiden Gallagher who broke her heart when they were a teenagers.  Aiden is now a police officer in town.  Aiden and Laurel have a long history together and, in fact, they are legends because they are depicted in the most famous picture in town.  As small children, Aiden and Laurel innocently kissed on the Kissing Bridge where legend holds that those who kiss there will be together forever.  Now the town wants to update the photo using Aiden and Laurel again, but Laurel is in no mood to cooperate.

OPINION: A lovely, heart warming small town romance, SOMEBODY LIKE YOU was a book that I read only because it was offered to me to review.  I accepted the chance to review the book intrigued by the Kissing Bridge and the idea that two people who were photographed on it as children get a chance at romance as adults.  Sometimes I just have to take a wild chance and see what happens.

I'm happy to report that this was a wonderful book.  Funny, sweet, and heartwarming.  Once I began reading it, I couldn't put it down.  The story satisfied something in me that likes the gentle and real relationships.  (I love angsty dramas but this book isn't that type of book.  Instead, this book feels like sweet and cold ice cream on a summer's day -- recognizable and incredibly satisfying).

Laurel is a woman recovering from the end of a marriage that made her question all her assumptions about her own future and happy endings.  She is generous and willing to help others even to her own detriment.  She is unwilling to purposely hurt others and that had led her to be taken advantage of by some...but it also opens her up to being wonderful in helping those who genuinely need assistance.  I loved that she is a normal woman who is struggling to determine what she wants from life.  She works hard, is charitable and has to work through her mixed emotions for not only Aiden but her ex-husband.

Aiden is so much a normal guy that I never expected him to become one of my favorite romantic heroes.  Like so many of us, he made mistakes as a teenager.  In his case, it resulted in him hurting Laurel which is something he never intended to do. He is considered the goofball of his family, but like so many clowns, his humor hides a sensitive soul. Aiden is a man who wants to make a difference out of the genuine goodwill in his heart. Caring for a homeless man, solving small town disputes and crimes, and being an important part of his family is a normal day for Aiden.  Laurel and her pain and love brings out Aiden's desire to care for her.

I loved the romance between Aiden and Laurel. Two people who have known one another all their lives, their interactions have been a series of getting to know one another and then moving apart.  Their romance seemed to have possibilities as teenagers, but immaturity sent them spinning out into the world with other relationships.  Meeting again as adults, the two know one anther but don't truly know the inner self of the other.  But this time, Aiden and Laurel begin to discover the true self under all the superficial.  Aiden sees the generous and hurt woman under Laurel calm facade and Laurel discovers the deep and caring man under Aiden's humorous surface.

I'm all for large romantic gestures, and Aiden's final one made me sigh and smile and read again.  When I began the book, I had expectations and I liked how the book played with those expectations, turned them around and then surpassed what I expected from the final scenes.  Bravo!

The town of Darling manages to feel both incredibly normal and real and also quaint and a typical small town.  The characters are quirky and bring a tremendous amount of humor to the book.  I just knew when I finished this book that I had to read the next books in the series.  And so I shall...see my reviews soon.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book doesn't contain explicit "on screen" sex and is perfect for those who might want a less graphic and yet entirely satisfying romance.

CONNECTED BOOKS:  SOMEBODY LIKE YOU is the first book in the Darling, VT series.

STAR RATING:  I give this book 4.5 stars.

NOTE:  I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in order to provide a review.  I was not required to write a positive review.  All opinions contained herein are my own. This review was originally posted on Top10RomanceBooks.com

4 stars - This is a new author for me & a very good story. It is well-written with well-developed & interesting characters. At first I wasn't sure if I'd like Laurel as she couldn't let go of things that happened in her past, but as she does let go you find out how deeply she cares for everyone. I would definitely read more by this author.

#SOMETHINGOLDSOMETHINGNEW

I enjoyed this emotional, heartwarming story that has likable and realistic characters, interactions, and emotions. These are not perfect people, but people who mess up, pay the price but can find forgiveness. Darling, Vermont, is known for its kissing bridge, one where five-year-old Aiden Gallagher and Laurel stone kissed and was photographed. Now, twenty years later, the town wants to update the photo using the same people.

“Kiss for a moment; love for a lifetime. Darling, Vermont.”

Laurel has moved back to Darling, purchased the garden center, a home, and started life again. She had moved away, attended college, got her degree, married Dan, and worked. When she thought they would be starting a family, he shatters her world—he’s been having an affair with Ryan and wants a divorce. Darling is a small town, no secrets and plenty of gossips. Laurel does her best to move forward—and then a break-in and vandalism bring Officer Aiden Gallagher back into her life.

Aiden and Laurel were friends since childhood, but he was a stupid teenager, acted on a bet, broke her heart, shattered her faith, and when she graduated and moved away, she started a new life. Now, Laurel is back, and maybe Aiden can make things right—at least be friends.

“It’s not just about trusting other people, it’s about trusting yourself, too, isn’t it?”

The plot of this story is a second chance small town romance with plenty of angst, memories, regrets, forgiving and forgiveness, new beginnings, and sizzling chemistry. The story has bits and pieces of their past—and things that happened over the last several years that have molded them into the people they are now. It isn’t without complications, heartache, dissolution, regrets, but it is a chance to move forward. Sometimes hearing the truth is painful, and yet, it must happen. Aiden and Laurel aren’t the teenagers from ten years ago, they have matured, faced diversities and fate has brought them back together. Aiden helps Laurel see beyond her grief, a homeless man who becomes a friend and is a crucial character in this tale.

“Maybe we bring out the best in each other. Isn’t that a lovely thought?”

“You never want to hurt anyone’s feelings. You do things for people and put yourself last. Do you think I don’t see it? That’s just the sort of thing I’m talking about. When do you do anything that’s just for Laurel? Don’t change who you are. You care about people even when they let you down and at your own expense. That’s not something to be ashamed of. It’s honorable.”

I don’t want to give away the story—but that time and maturity make a difference, and both Aiden and Laurel discover that in the present. They can admit their feelings—and maybe with the help of friends and family, that dreams can come true and find their happily ever after.

“I’m starting to think that coming home and opening that place was the best decision I ever made.”

"Somebody Like You" by Donna Alward

My Thinking....

Interesting read learning to why Laurel Stone has returned home to heal in Darling, Vermont, now divorced and determined to make a go of her business ....'The Ladybug Garden Center.' However, their is a person Laurel would love to avoid...Aiden Gallagher who just happens to be the local town cop. Now what had happen in HS between these two? Now, how this author brings these two together is really a cute story. What will happen when Laurel needs some help with some vandalism[someone sprays paint on her fence & stole the cash register] and will Aiden be willing to help her with this problem? Then what will happen when the 'town council wants tem to recreate a kiss[retake a childhood photo at five years old] from when they were children on 'The Kissing Bridge?' What was up with 'The Kissing Bridge? Well, legend holds that those who kiss there will be together forever.

Will this be the push that is needed to get these two on the same playing field? Now, what is up when Laurel's ex wants her to come to his wedding...supply the flowers and plants for their back yard? Was this guy for real? Why would Laurel ever consent to do this? What had happened that had brought this friendship to a end seventeen years ago? Why was Laurel somewhat guard against these two... Aiden and her ex-husband? What regrets does Aiden have toward the way things happened with Laurel many years ago. Will they be able to get pasted all of this and start all over again since it seem like they may have something? To get all of these answers you will have to pick up this good read.

I found the characters [Laurel, Aiden, George, Willow, Rory] to name a few were all well developed, entertaining, well portrayed, quirky, likable, real and believable giving this story one well told story with some interesting twists. I liked how this author showed the growth of the two main characters... Laurel and Aiden.

This is quite a new series: Darling, VT # 1' that will keep you turning the pages to see what will happen next as the stories get into 'passion, family, friendship and a wonderful community'
giving the reader quite a mesmerizing second chance romance. In the end will Laurel and Aiden get their HEA? Well, to find out you will have to pick up this novel and read this captivated read to see how well written this author will bring it all out.

By the end of this novel "Somebody Like You" will definitely put a smile on your face and having you looking for the next series.

Maybe I'll get back to this sometime but I'm just so fucking bored and I honestly don't care about these people right now. I'm bummed because I was really hoping this would be a winner.
