Whew ya'll! These two are a hot mess. Readers get to explore more of the cliff hanger that we get in volume 5, but to be honest IT. DOES. NOT. COMPARE. TO. THIS. CLIFFHANGER! What in the f***?!? Some people are saying that this is too dramatic and that Ando is only doing this to keep us interested, but BABY I could care less lmao! I'm here for all the ridiculous plot twists and more importantly the DRAMA. I cannot wait to dive into volume 7 because I did not see that coming.

Okay lol this is so frustrating, just say you're preggy, okay!! I've been holding back from screaming for how many chapters again. And lol, on the earliest volumes when we found out Tsubaki isn't the real son, I was shrugging like, maybe it's Nao—lol I was still shocked when I saw it coming. Also, I knew it, Tsubaki wouldn't ruin someone else product lol!

(These are mostly my own notes so I can remember the basic plot for this volume. Feel free to skip it, since it doesn't have much, or any commentary or analysis.)

Jojima's arc from the previous volumes ends as the warabi mochi that Nao has been working so hard on perfecting is chosen by Tsubaki for inclusion at the department store Tanibata event. It turns out that she wasn't trying to please Jojima, or have some sort of influence on him, but she was acting purely out of love for the art. Unsurprising for her, in the end.

Of course, the proprietress was the one behind both sabotages: the one from the past that ruined Shimaya, and this most recent one. At this point, such nonsense on her part is very predictable, and Nao and the head confectioner are able to create decoy shells that contain the good batch of mochi, and the proprietress ruins an earlier, bad batch.

It seems like Nao is in the early stages of pregnancy. She's nauseated around certain smells, and has missed her period. She gets a pregnancy test to verify. Not too long afterward, Jojima--his feelings having changed from lust to loyalty--gives Nao an excuse to explore the room she and her mother shared years ago. A secret panel (which Jojima couldn't possibly have found himself?) reveals some mementos and a set of documents proving fairly conclusively that Tsubaki isn't in the direct genetic line to inherit Kogetsuan*... but Nao is!**

* apparently this was mentioned earlier in the manga, but it's been over a year and a half since I read the last one, so it fell down the memory hole.
** since I didn't remember that, for a few panels I saw the potential for a "are they half-siblings, or what?" plot, but the story cleared that misconception (conception? get it?) right away. Of course, since this manga was serialized before being collected in a book, a Japanese reader might have forgotten some of these details, as well. Nicely done, Andoh!

Nao is preparing for her formal wedding to Tsubaki, and still hasn't told him she's pregnant! Of course, seconds after she's gathered her courage to tell him, and is a syllable or two into her confession, they're interrupted. If she ends up coming to term, there's going to be a point where it's impossible to conceal, but at least she's unlikely to be too large to fit into her bridal wear. Yuko's been invited to the wedding, and neither she nor Nao think it's a great idea, but Tsubaki really wants her there to support Nao.

5☆

It might be odd, but sometimes I love it when the important details that need to be said are not being said, it frustrates the readers as it adds unnecessary angst. The classic antihero/heroine, morally ambiguous, acrimonious characters. Common trope(s) but can be extremely riveting, for me at least. I wonder how this will hold in the end. Stories tend to lose its charm when authors try to prolong the agony. For now, this series is wicked af. ^o^ very nicely done..

Content note for the SERIES: murder, death of a parent, violence, unfair loss of job/firing, domestic violence, abuse, involuntary confinement, attempted murder

Okay, I don’t wanna spoil anything, so I’m only going to give a vague-ish review of the first couple of books in the series! First, let me assure any of you who might not be interested in NSFW material (or disappoint those of you who are lol)– this isn’t that spicy of a comic. There are a few panels in each book so far that include very brief allusions to sex but don’t show anything outright.

Y’all. This series had me in a VISE GRIP!! It’s SO GOOD. It’s incredibly well written, and the art is just so beautiful and elegant, matching the subject matter perfectly. The number of kimono and wagashi illustrated in here alone is so satisfying.

This series is the kind that gets better and better with each volume, and that’s not something I can usually say about much these days, so I was so, so happy to read this. It unfolds throughout and never lets you rest on your laurels, thinking you know for sure what’s going to happen or who will be unveiled to be involved with the main plot or any number of subplots going on at the same time. Beautiful!

I love the characters, and I love how the creator develops their relationships across so many volumes. I felt so fulfilled watching these characters’ arcs unfold the way they did. I want to say more, but I would be spoiling SO MUCH if I did! Just, trust me, you need to go give this series a read, it’s fantastic. It’s no wonder they got a tv adaptation!

I disagree a bit with the jacket copy on this series, describing it as spine chilling. Maybe I’m desensitized by all the horror movies I watch (lol jk it’s a lifetime’s worth of trauma 😂), but this was actually much more of a wagashi-centric drama, romance, thriller for me than a spine chiller. And that is not a bad thing at all! I think this series is so successful in part because of how fluidly it combined so many genres into a seamless and engaging story.

My point is, the jacket copy doesn’t quite do it justice. If you like comics that introduce you to artisan crafts and what goes into making them, this is a comic you want to read. If you like enemies to lovers and/or enemies to friends, this is your comic. If you like mystery and thrillers, this is a comic for you. If you like attention to detail and well designed plots and other aspects of writing as a craft, this is definitely your comic! Odds are very good you’ll like this comic, my friend!

Now, lemme give you a couple warnings, though: there is a lot of showing of abuse, violence, and manipulative, if not gaslighting, behavior in here. There is murder, attempted murder, child neglect, the loss of parents, etc. There are some topics I wish the creator had addressed better, such as the domestic abuse aspects, especially earlier in the series. But I promise you, the story is worth it.

Overall, I love this series so much! I’m in pain waiting in line for books 17-19 from my library right now, and I can’t wait to see how it continues. Please read it so we can talk about it!

Today's manga post is on Something's Wrong With Us, Vol. 6 by Natsumi Andō. It is 160 pages long and is published by Kodansha Comics. The cover has Nao and Tsubaki on it. As it is the sixth volume in the series, you need to have read the first five volumes to understand the plot. There is mild foul language, mild sexuality, and no violence in this manga. The intended reader is someone who likes twisty, thriller romances with morally grey characters. The story is told from third person close of the main characters. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the manga- A New Spark
Nao is more nervous than ever as her body begins to accommodate a new life, so she copes by focusing on her beloved wagashi . She throws herself into making Shimaya’s warabi mochi in order to help Jojima earn back the acclaim for his family’s treasured confection. Meanwhile, Tsubaki senses that Nao is hiding something from him, but decides not to press her about it. When they visit Yuko, Tsubaki lays bare his feelings, and Nao is touched by his sincerity. As the couple grows closer, she thinks she can take a chance on his love, but trouble is never far on the horizon for these two lovers bound by a dark past…

Review- This volume has some real bombshells in it. From Nao being pregnant to who Tsubaki and Nao's real fathers are. There is just to much going on. The grandfather knows that not only is Tsubaki not is his grandson but that he has a granddaughter out there somewhere. Nao is really feeling the pressure now. The mother-in-law is starting to really get crazy and she may try anything to keep her hands on the shop. As the plot goes, it just keeps getting better with very twist. I cannot wait to read the next volume.

I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

Sooooo... Tsubaki and Nao aren't siblings. NGL I'm low-key disappointed simply because of the shit show that them being siblings would've caused. LOL. But there is a bigger shit show on the horizon. Because NAO is Tsubaki's dad kid and not Tsubaki! So seems like grandpops is correct about Tsubaki's mom cheating or she got pregnant by a previous partner. Let's not blow past that gramps is now looking for the DAUGHTER. (named SAKURA) of the woman his son loved in the past. That she lived in the house 15 yrs ago! He even mentions how he told Tsubaki to look for said girl. Which is probably why Tsubaki said if Sakura ever showed up he'd make her disappear. Because he knows/feels that Sakura might be the rightful heir and he'll be pushed out.

Nao is preggo but of course she hasn't told Tsubaki yet because when she planned to tell him they got caught up talking about other things so she never got around to telling him. And then she found out how she's the rightful Kogetsuan heir.

I’m a little confused. If the big reveal of vol 6 is true, doesn’t everybody get everything they want? Or as close to it without having to destroy more lives? Seriously. Seems like there should only be one more volume to wrap everything up in a nice bow. Alas! Either I am missing something or these people need some space to clarify what the issues are before plowing ahead with… everything…

Regardless, I love how well Nao and Tsubaki fit together and how much they genuinely admire and like each other. Like, genuinely value who each other are as they continue to spend time together. It’s sweet.

Read vol 1-6.

Wonder why Nao is stupid. Vengeful but not strongly vengeful.
This whole family is weird, sadistic, evil, crazy
I kinda suspect from the beginning there’s no way that Shimaya boi is actually good boi (well he's good, it's just he has his own grudge and plan), because we all know how the family, including Tsubaki, who has a twisted mind.
Nao, u should thank your God of Fortune instead of forcing your way inside that twisted family. Just let them doom and save yourself. Build that dreamy little shop you want!

Now i wonder how the drama ends as I haven’t gotten to read this manga till end.

Also, what's with that plot twist???? 🤯🤯🤯

As I said for Volume 4: “The drama just ramps up higher and higher. I want to be frustrated that nothing is getting resolved but only progressively getting more complicated. But I am loving every twist…” And, in Volume 5? More twists. Volume 6? Even more twists! If I was waiting anxiously for the next translation release, the lack of resolution of any of the plotlines could be frustrating. Instead, I’m once again relieved I have four volumes to read in quick succession. I’m loving the drama, the increases in tension, and the dilemmas. But if I was having to wait a long period for the next volume? I’d be going insane!

Having confirmed her pregnancy, Nao struggles to tell Tsubaki while also planning how she'll disappear from his life going forward. Meanwhile she's stepped in to help further with orders and grandpa may now also be getting an inkling of who she is. It makes more sense why grandpa was so interested in Sakura now having found the hidden records in old room she used to live in with her mother 15 years ago. We even get another story in the end from their childhood when Nao's mother was still alive and working at the shop. This is a happier memory when the two share a watermelon candy together after Sakura confides in Tsubaki that she doesn't actually like watermelon directly.

Oh. My. Gosh.

RECAP: Nao suspects being pregnant, is continuing to make mochi, takes a test and refocuses. Mom tries to sabotage, Tsubaki knew she would, so Nao had made a counter measure instead and they sell out at the competition. Tsubaki and Nao visit her “mom” and ask her to go to the wedding. Nao tries to tell Tsubaki she’s pregnant but keeps missing the chance. Grandpa moves his ceremony. Nao finds paternity tests and figures out she’s the heir of the place. She makes the test sweet for Grandpa and volume ends with her deciding to leave.

aaaannnddd we've reached the point where this has veered into 'so bad it's just annoying' territory for me. I love angst and miscommunication tropes, but not when they get drawn out to the point of tedium, and that's where I'm at with Nao's 'I should tell him who I am...'

The Proprietoress is getting a little too clown villain for it to be entertaining anymore. The next volume doesn't come out in translation for a month..don't think I'll be jumping on it right away when it does.

Vol 6 was really good. I love the background story and the relationship between Nao and Tsubaki. There were a lot of new twist I never saw coming and left my jaw on the floor. Some of the beginning was hard to follow more so than the other books but I really enjoyed it. I am so obsessed with these two and I am dying for them to get a happily ever after.

Revelations in each volume aside, I get impatient for the villains (in this case, the Proprietess) to receive appropriate punishment!
Now, I have access to volumes 7 - 12 but not the final five volumes of the series.
That is frustrating. I don't plan to read any more of this manga series
until I have those final few!

I found certain elements that hindered communication between the main characters, leading to a drawn-out and predictable plot.
Fortunately, the plot twist and the development of the grandfather and Jojima's characters redeemed the story. The dessert competition storyline was also a delightful addition.
