A Lady for His Lordship

Rate this book
Regency Romance
Miss Ancilla Clements longs for a love match of her own, until her sister’s scandal ruins her family’s standing, dashing her hopes of ever making an advantageous match. When her father arranges for Ancilla’s marriage to a wealthy, titled gentleman, she agrees to make the best of it, secretly hoping to still find love in the match. But when she arrives at Highstone Manor to meet her future husband and finalize their engagement, the Marquess of Lansdowne is nowhere to be found.

The Marquess of Lansdowne has long believed a marriage of convenience to be the best path forward. After all, as a marquess, he will need an heir. He tasks his man of business with the details so he can stay hidden from society, just as he prefers it. But when the marquess finally meets Ancilla, he is baffled to discover she cares little for his title or wealth. She’s looking for something much more complicated in the arrangement. Love.

The marquess never intended to be close to his future bride, to reveal himself—and all his flaws—in any personal way. But Ancilla is persistent. And lovely. Suddenly this arrangement is no longer convenient and proving more than he bargained for.

Once upon a time Allie fell in love, quite by accident. She was blinded by a deep friendship, which happened to be the perfect recipe for a love match to grow right under her nose, without her noticing.

The Regency era speaks to her with its rules, etiquette, and charm. Of course, the top hats and cravats are sure winners. She can quote the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice with 98% accuracy, plays the pianoforte with moderate proficiency, and has an affinity for the beneficial exercise of walking.

Allie is a famous author--at least in her own home--where her very own Mr. Darcy dotes on her and where their children play without the supervision of a governess.

A sweet and refreshingly different story for its genre. I loved Ancilla's attitude of not fighting the arranged marriage her parents insisted on but instead being determined to make it into a love match. True love is so much more than physical attraction--though of course there was that too. And although I'm usually wary of the being-attracted-to-your-intended-while-he's-in-disguise bit, I really admired the way she handled things when she couldn't get "Frederick" out of her mind, by continuing to seek out the elusive marquess, so she could fill her mind with him instead. :)

Also, I found Percival's reticence very understandable given his circumstances, and I liked the fact that some of his continued resistance to the idea came in his budding care for Ancilla and wanting her to be happy and fulfilled, even though he didn't think he could manage it. And I loved his relationship with his cousin--that was great! Also, I loved the way that Ancilla reacted to his disability. Their chemistry overall was just so sweet and precious.

The regency setting was also well done with only a couple little blips that took me out of the period. Overall, it was a very sweet story, and I'm happy I read it. <3

I received a free copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.

Content--a few kisses (not descriptive); mentions of a girl being deceived by a suitor and embroiling her family in scandal (no details)

A short, simple story.

But unfortunately much was not to my taste. I appreciated that for once an arranged marriage was sought, with mostly a positive attitude. And I didn’t mind her determination to turn it into a love match. My problem was around the messaging, the marquess telling her she couldn’t « force » herself to love someone. Would have been a great opportunity to tell him that love is a choice and something you can choose to intentionally grow. And am I wrong in thinking that most people who had arranged marriages, hoped for eventual respect, esteem, friendship and yes, love?

Otherwise, our heroine was very emotional, not very bright, and pushy. She continued to be ignorant even when the truth was staring her in the face and she never even suspected it. Also, pressing someone you’ve known for one day to dance right after he tells you about an accident that’s made it humiliating and painful for him… not a great idea. That kind of thing only works out in books like this.

And then she just tosses out a simple solution to solve all his problems at the end.

This is a short sweet book introducing this new author. I really enjoyed this story which though short was complete. I like the author's writing style which makes the story come alive.

A betrothal has been arranged between two strangers by the family of the woman and the man of business for the man. The compatibility of the two was thought to make for a good marriage but the situation starts to fall apart when the groom, the Marquess of Lansdowne fails to show up, in his own home, for the betrothal party.

Miss Ancilla Clements has decided to trust her parents and her uncle to make a wise arrangement for her marriage. This was due to the unfortunate scandal her sister made years before that was still effecting the family and Ancilla's hopes for an advantageous match. Ancilla hopes that she will be able to find love with the man they have chosen for her. Her hopes start to falter when her betrothed fails to show up and she begins to believe she has somehow offended him.

The Marquess of Lansdowne is a good man but something that happened to him years before had him afraid to choose a bride. When he finally decided to have an arranged marriage- he was willing to go forward until he saw the beauty of the woman he had agreed to marry. Watching her from the shadows has given him some insight about her.

Will the Marguess choose to go forward with the plan or will he be a coward and break the arrangements before the two of them even have a chance?

I received a copy of this book from bookfunnel and this is my honest unbiased review.

I got this ebook for free from BookFunnel. It tells the sweet, little story about the arranged marriage between Miss Ancilla Clements and Percival Frederick Anthony Fitzgerald, Marquess of Lansdowne. Both characters have deep insecurities that put a cloud in their relationship, but (instant) love triumphs in the end.

Both characters are likable, but the narrative gets a bit too repetitive. I would have liked a bit more depth, more insight into their family stories, maybe?, not only their issues and how much they suffered because of them.

I do love that Ancilla and ends up being a very intelligent woman, just would have liked more context and build up towards this discovery.

When Ancilla accepted her parents’ wish to enter a marriage of convenience, she never would have thought it possible that it might be broken. Especially since she had already started falling in love with her intended…
I loved Ancilla’s outlook, that she was working towards developing not only a friendship but a romantic relationship with her husband-to-be. She was mature enough to know that title enough would never make her happy, as well as looking on the outside of people instead of their hearts. However, I’m probably not the only one who relates to the marquess who is branded by the cruelness of people that made fun of him instead of being compassionate. Unfortunately, there are way too few people like Ancilla who showed an uncommon maturity and kindness.
I hope you will enjoy reading about Ancilla’s dreams and what she wished to gain in her arranged marriage.

This is the story of Ancilla Clements and Percival Fitzgerald, Marquess of Lansdowne. Following her sister’s scandal of a marriage, Ancilla agrees to an arranged marriage rather than trusting to follow her heart and risk another scandal. Following a childhood accident, Percival is a bit of a recluse, so an arranged marriage would be an easy way of obtaining a bride without having to venture into society. The plan was a good one, but what happens when the two finally meet……..

This was the first book I’d read by this author, and I enjoyed it immensely. It was well written and for a novella it packed a lot in. The characters were good, as was the dialogue, so I look forward to discovering more by this author 🐈‍⬛

I like the concept and idea of this story. I love that it dives right into the action and subject of the story. I felt like the action was very well done. I liked that she figured out who he was before he told her.

There are 2 major things that kept me from giving this a 4 or 5 star rating. First, the dialogue. It felt forced and unnatural. It felt like it was there simply to tell the reader information and nothing more. The second was how quickly everything was resolved. These are major issues that each of them have. I would want to see the ending expounded upon and lengthen this just a little.

This is a fun Georgian-era arranged marriage romance. The betrothed couple are to meet at the groom’s estate for the first time. He is a Marquess, but none of the bride’s family have met him. There is a case of mistaken identity, a suddenly reluctant groom and a lovely, young bride who hopes to find love. Of course there are misunderstandings, but an eventual happy ending. I enjoyed the author’s writing style and would definitely read more of her books. I received a free copy of this book by signing up for her newsletter. This is a sweet story. I loved it.

It's a story about Ancillia Clements, a young woman who is unable to get a husband because of a scandal with her sister.

However, a marriage is arranged between Miss Ancilla Clements and Percival Frederick Anthony Fitzgerald, Marquess of Lansdowne.

Ancilla determines that she will fall in love with Percival as she wants a love match. She has not met Percival and confusion arises when she mistakes him for someone else.

All works out in the end. I enjoyed reading this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this free book from the author. A very unique storyline starting on the first page will keep the reader enthralled as the story pans out from one chapter to the next. The couple "Ancilla and the "Marquees of Lansdowne " are to marry, but things start off on the wrong foot from the beginning and she seriously questions this arrangement if her betrothed won't even make an appearance. An engaging story that brings a few chuckles.

This is the first book I have read from this author and I LOVED it!
The book grabbed me from the first sentence and I was involved in the characters from the start!
The plot line and interaction of the characters was well written and believable.
I loved how the characters were both insecure but for different reasons and the desire to not give up and have hope was lovely.
I enjoyed this so much I have purchased the next two and preordered the next.

One sweet novella filled with heart! I absolutely fell for the lady and her marquess. There's nothing better than when two hearts are of one accord. And the tender writing style of Allie Kensington was just delightful! I cannot wait to read more from this unputdownable author. And could the cover be anymore gorgeous?! If you crave dashing gentlemen who lack confidence and arranged marriages, be sure to read this beautiful book. It's definitely swoony!

Sweet Novella,
An arranged marriage between two people who haven’t met doesn’t start well, when the fiancé doesn’t turn up to his own engagement party. Ancilla feels slighted and rejected, particularly as she was hoping that if well matched, they would learn to love each other. Can one of the Marquess’ employees give her an insight into his character? A lovely quick read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book gifted by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What a sweet case of mistaken identity! I loved the scenario between the shy lord and his exuberant betrothed. There wasn't quite enough "spark" between them for me—a few of the scenes were very explanatory and dialogue heavy, and I would have preferred more personal details to bring Ancilla and Percival to life. The promise of romance blossoming between them was believable, however, and overall it was an intriguing set up to the Marrying for Love series.

This novella is a fairly short read, but it's so much FUN! Picture two young aristocrats in Regency England, set in 1791. Both have agreed to an arranged marriage, because both have issues that might make them appear to be unmarriageable to others. Can they make their formal arrangement work? This story is reminiscent of some of Georgette Heyer's best, updated to modern times. I can't wait to read Allie Kensington's other books!

This is a sweet romance with an unusual twist. The main characters are well developed and extremely likable. The story is different from any other I’ve read and kept me turning the pages as quickly as possible. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I hope to read much more from the imaginative author, Allie Kensington.

Delightul!!

I’ve sampled books from a few new-to-me authors recently, and this book by Allie Kensington really stood out - it truly was delightful!

“A Lady for His Lordship” was well-written. From the first page, I just wanted to keep reading! I was both entertained and moved as Ancilla’s and the Marquess’ experiences were recounted.

Reading this book has made me look forward to reading more books by Allie Kensington!

I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Allie writes very well in an easy to read style with lots of detail. The characters are well defined and varied with all the human traits we love or hate... The Regency Era with all it's rules and restrictions is fascinating. A great story Allie. Very much appreciated.

I thought this story was a fun sweet story. The plot was good and the message of believing in others and encouraging those with disabilities was honorable. The characters were well thought out and charming. It was a short novella, but a complete story and easy to read in an afternoon. Look forward to reading more from this author.

This was harmless, a bit silly. The FMC seems rather naive as she has decided to fall in love with a man sight unseen, and the MMC is hiding in his own house because he wants out of his arranged engagement with her. Which seems a little weaselly but he had his reasons. It was a bookfunnel freebie, and a quick chaste read.

Thanks to the author's newsletter, i discovered this beautiful story. I must admit the Marquess seemed too stubborn to the point of hurting Ancilla sometimes, but I loved how she never saw him as any less because of his condition. And the way she found a solution was a nice touch. I recommend this book without a doubt.

A sweet romance that tells of a sight unseen arranged marriage. The lady looks positively at this and hopes to fall in love with her future husband but Percival looks negatively at it due to his past injury. How they meet and work out things to their hea is sweetly told.

It was a lovely love story. An arranged marriage, but Ancilla also wanted to fall in love with her husband. Percival at first acted as if he was not the Marquess that Ancilla was arranged to marry. I could not put this down. Loved it. Very well written. Highly recommend.
