Zombies never stay dead. Winter Hawk is on day three of a five-day cruise when the zombie infection decides to make its appearance. She's seen her share of bad days, but nothing compares to the fact that the people around Winter are dying and coming back to life in droves. Winter has to get off of the cruise ship and away from the infection, no matter what it takes. Armed with a first aid kit, a couple of water bottles, and a few unlikely companions, she embarks on a journey that will change everything. If she can manage to survive.
L.C. Mortimer was raised on a small farm in Kansas, which sparked her interest in going off the grid. Learning how to can, garden, and become self-reliant were all important parts of her upbringing. After pursuing her degree in English Literature, Mortimer traveled the country with her husband, living in Hawaii, Maryland, and everywhere in between. When she's not busy dreaming up her next story, Mortimer can be found stocking up on canned goods for the zombie apocalypse.
I really don't need 3 POVs for a story that's happening almost entirely on a lifeboat, especially not for one where there are only 3 people on said lifeboat. Winter and Greta were decent characters, I really liked them at first, especially with Greta's whole "these quilts aren't going to make themselves" because girl same, but the longer I spent with them the more annoying they became. The guy was just sort of there in a generally boring but inoffensive sort of way. There was a lot of potential at first, at least for someone like me who thinks a cruise ship is the perfect setting for horror, but ultimately it ended up being just ok at best.
I didn't realize when I bought this that there were NINE "books" in this series (they're really more novellas). While the story itself was ok, I'm not spending $4-5 on each one of these 100ish page stories, so I'll be ending here.
The premise was interesting, and I liked the character of Greta, a 70-ish woman who knows a thing or two about survival. There isn't a whole lot that happens in this first story though, and it ends when it appears something might.
Wild Undead, Stay Dead Book 1 by L.C. Mortimer I was given this book by Bookspout for honest review. WHOOP WHOOP!!! Zombies are my JAMMMMMM! I am so excited to find an author who has a TON of zombie books in her library. Momma is gonna be BUSY!!! LOL This book starts out hard and fast. We meet Winter who is just wanting to chill out and drink some drinks while watching a movie on the Lido Deck…cool…amiriiight?? I mean ya gotta give your liver a break after 3 days of nonstop vodka time. Winter is there on the cruise thanks to her friend Angela, who doesn’t believe in giving her liver a break. Winter is a typical 20 something trying to figure her life out when a blood curdling scream happens……WHUUUUU….a man ate some dude at the bar?? This cant be happening…and yet it is!!!! Greta is a widow who won this awesome *insert sarcasm* trip who is woken up by screams and running in the hallway of her room. She grabs her bag and runs to hear people discussion cannibals…no way…can’t be!! Then she stumbles into Winter and Isaiah while trying to get outta dodge!! Isaiah is trying to get his chill on. He works to hard and isn’t into the fling lifestyle with the ladies like his friends but when he sees them get bit, he knows something isn’t right about those “freaky chicks”. The three form an alliance to get off the boat and get to safety all while fighting zombies and dealing with being adrift at sea. I absolutely loved this story, and I cannot wait for more!! I wanna know what happens because where this book left off has so many possibilities!!!
I enjoyed this book. When I was in college we had to write a horror story and I wrote about a vampire aboard the Titanic. When I read the blurb for this book, my mind went right to my story. In this book series, it isn't a cruise liner in the early 1900s and it isn't a vampire. Instead, it's a modern-day cruise ship and the enemy is zombies!
At the end of this book, only 3 people so far have managed to get in and launch a lifeboat. This lifeboat does have some electricity but it runs out of gas. So, the survivors are tossed and turned on the stormy sea not knowing where they will end up or if they will die in the lifeboat.
I found the setup for the plot to be very good. Unlike most books of this type, the author didn't take his/her time setting up the zombie attack. I believe it happened in the first chapter (though it might have been chapter 2). Also, the author doesn't get too gross in describing the blood and guts of the attack.
The plot is interesting and the writing is very good. I enjoyed this book so much that I went and bought the next 3 in the series. I only gave this book 4 stars just in case the other books in the series are better and I can give one more star credit. :)
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. WILD! This is a zombie book that you definitely want to read. This story sucks you in from the very start and holds tight right to the very end. It is consuming. Winter is sort of a loner, but with friends. Even though this is a quick read, her back story pulls at your heart strings. You see her relaxing and trying to have fun when all hell breaks loose. She starts hearing stories and then the unthinkable happens when she, and many others, witness a madman eating the bartender! She knows she needs to start preparing for the worst. There are others that are in the same boat as her (no pun intended, lol) and this is how she meets Greta and Isaiah. As they start the race for their lives, they form an unlikely alliance and embark on a journey of survival. This is absolutely a wild ride and stuck with me long after the book ended. I have a feeling that the trio are going to come upon some crazy obstacles, but where their story goes….I have no clue. I am on pins and needles for the next installment. L.C. Mortimer is a new author for me, but bravo because you have a new fan!
This series is written in an episodic manner. Each is a novella of approximately 100+ pages.
Slow moving, a lot of character introspection. Too much.
It's written in multiple POV, by chapter. Which I enjoy.
It wasn't awful. It just became sort of annoying because ALL of the characters suffer from low self-esteem, guilt, personal baggage from their childhoods, and personal loss.
The author seems to have an issue with age because it's mentioned every other page throughout the series. There are 3 main characters in this book, but adds another in successive books. 3 of the 4 are in their 20's but act as though they're high school students. The other character is in her 70's and is a helluva lady who I enjoy. The 20 somethings are incredibly child like in thought and actions.
L.C. Mortimer kicks off the “Stay Dead” series by trapping the protagonists on a boat. There is no love interest. No story driven age group. Just zombies eating people. This is so refreshing!
Winter is a feisty character whose luck runs out on this cruise. I like her. She is not a super heroine or someone who needs to save the world. The fight to just survive is what drives her and she ends up with two companions along the way. An everyday girl is put into an extraordinary situation.

I liked this story and its twist on the start of the zombie apocalypse. I liked the story and the main characters. I liked that it was a quick read with fun characters and setup the series well. Get a glimpse of out main 3 and their spunky attitudes. The story ends with them safe for now but really want to know what will happen next and are they really safe. All we know is that chaos is beginning and I cannot wait to see what else will go wrong and right. Just a fun story that made me laugh and entertained me.
An excellent zombie story. A quick read starting with an unusual setting. The cruise ship section is quite tense and fast paced and then the story slows and is more reflective when the three leads are drifting on the lifeboat. The writing is great, the characters are strong and we'll described. The book has a Edinburgh story continues and I look forward to reading the next in the series.

It was an interesting read but after reading half of the book I just couldn't go any further as I don't like zombies. Zombies are the new big thing and the characters are amazing and they do make it out safely but where will they go. I recommend this book to people who like zombie books with a twist.

When the passengers on a cruise ship begin getting sick then attack and bite or eat crew members and other passengers, three of them make it to a lifeboat and take off. It was fun to read about the issues each of the three has. This story has action and ends in a cliffhanger. Highly recommended.

It was okay, I guess. It was a little boring and the writing was very repetitive. Multiple times the author would say something like this: “we’ll make it if we stick together. Together we could make it. Together.” Uhg! I think they were going for emphasis, but they really needed an editor.
It was ok for a novella and was exactly what I expected. It will have its audience but didn’t hit the right spots for me. The name of Greta’s deceased husband changed which bugged me unless Greta has Alzheimer’s or something. I don’t think I’ll be reading the next books.
For 4 dollars, this is very, very short and honestly at the end I was still waiting for the real story to start. The characters are as one dimensional as they come and the dialogue is stilted and awkward.
The story was good! A lot of talking and thinking.. I was hoping for more zombies and time on the cruse ship trying to survive! I was also hoping to find out what happened to a few other characters that we were introduced to.. maybe they will be in the next book.
I like the way this book depict honest situations. People are complex but in emergencies people come together in a special way. The characters are fresh and true. I cannot wait to continue discovering and exploring their survival story.
Very good character development in a zombie apocalypse novel!
Excellent character development - you got too really know the 3 main characters trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. And you root for them to make it. Well don L.C. Mortimer.
This book was just ok. Not too exciting or interesting. I stuck it out til the end but I don't know if I'll keep reading the series. There are much better zombie stories out there.
Short, good read. I think she is a new writer, but she has potential and I hope that in her following books, I get to see her grow. I would recommend this book.
Read it all in one sitting! Next time I will not read a zombie book before bed lol. Believable characters that sounded a lot like the voice in my head. My first true zombie book, but definitely interested in reading the next one!
