An army of the dead awakens, and Seiran and Gabe are the only thing standing in the way of a shift in global power. Can they rise to the change or will they become the next victims?

I received an ARC from GRR and this is my honest review.

This is my first Lissa Kasey book and I have a lot of things that I absolutely loved about it.

1. The Characters:
Sei is the Pillar Of Earth, the most powerful male witch on earth. he was nuanced and strong, relentless and courageous, He didn't like anyone stepping on his toes, and protected his loved ones fiercely. But he wasn't so fierce with his heart, because he couldn't protect it against Gabe, time and time again. #NothingMoreImportantThanFamily
[image error]

Gabe was one of the oldest and most powerful vampire still "alive", but he has been gone for more than a decade. he was buried, after he became basically unhinged. But now he's back, has no memory which keeps coming back in bits and pieces, and even with that, he knows that Sei is someone important to him. #Unforgettable

2. The Plot:
I quite like this. From the world building, to the characters, both main and side, to the mystery and suspense aspect, it was all written extremely Well. the world the author built was detailed and intricate and interesting. the suspense plot, the case they were working... all of it was awesome and i loved reading it. Gabe and Sei were badasses, individually and together. #WhoDoneIt

3. The Romance:
Sei and Gabe have been apart for more than a decade. Their separation was not amicable; Gabe went off the rails and he hurt Sei badly. Even with this, even with Gabe not really remembering Sei, he knew he loved him. He knew that he has to redeem himself. Sei on the other hand was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Gabe, the love of his life, was back and wanting to reconnect, needing to reconnect because of....reasons. But this Gabe was the one who hurt him, who left him in the thick of things, who has the power to hurt him again. But as the plot moved along, so does their connection. #Timeless
[image error]

4. Steam-o-meter: Low steam. I have no idea if this is the author's style, but I think it worked here. The lone sex scene was way for them to resolve some of their issues. I appreciated the fact that it was used as a plot development device, even though these guys were always apperciating each other's looks. #MoreThanSex

5. Angst-o-meter: Lowish Angst between the MCs... we kind of revisit the reason of the separation but it isn't dwelled on a lot.
The suspense plot has a bit of angst as well but nothing too overwhelming. #LessIsMore

6. The Ending:
This is a pretty solid HFN.. It's the beginning of a new series, so more is coming. #ToBeContinued

P.S.
This series is a continuation of another series, which I haven't read.
The origin story of Gabe and Sei is in the previous series, as is the origin stories of the side characters.
For this reason, I felt lost until I paused, searched GR and found out that Sei and Gabe have another series that shows how they meet, get together, Sei's trauma explained and much more.
I think for new readers, it should be explained that this can't be read as a standalone.

NOTE: "Raising Kaine" should definitely be read before starting this new series which just continues the end of the previous series, "Pillars of Magic: Dominion Chapters". I had to stop and come back for it, even though I don't typically do the free and short reads. A lot happens in it, I realized very quickly I was missing vital info after starting this series - mostly because Sai goes from 2 to 3 kids.

With this 1st book, more questions are answered or at least addressed from the previous series. Our original m/c's have a HFN and do appear to be headed towards their HEA. There is a huge jump in time and a lot of major changes. I stayed not only engaged but engrossed. I'm really nervous about starting what appears to be the last book for the Pillars. I really hope everything is wrapped up nicely.

--------------
Below is my Review of the last book in the previous series which is the prequel to this one. I would definitely think it should be read 1st. Even with the jump in time and reminders I can't imagine jumping into the story arc with the start of this series.

On a good note, these books somehow keep pulling me in and are so much more than their blurbs; even though the blurbs are technically accurate.

But if I had read this when it 1st came out, I would have rated it 2 stars and absolutely LOST MY MIND while reviewing. Despite the 4 stars (which it does deserve), I'm still agitated at it in many ways.

This does not end with a HFN for the m/c's, there are so many questions still unanswered, and it has a cliffhanger. WTF?

Why this story arc continues as another series, I have no idea. I'm just glad the author made it clear at the end of the book, and that I actually skimmed that part to know. I don't always. I could be wrong, but I don't remember seeing a note/ link on the GdRd's page that this series continue as part as another. I think the new one notes this series, but not the reverse.

It does seem that the questions are eventually answered in the upcoming books, but often not before I'm agitated, confused, or feel like I'm missing something.

My original review was a rant with ? after ?etc..., so I decided to read on 1st. That has definitely helped, as has reading back to back. I will read the last book and hope it doesn't end like this one, since it was written over 2 years ago. It is a great series, but backstories and answers are definitely revealed slowly possibly over multiple books.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Resurrection is the first book in Lissa Kasey’s Pillars of Magic: Dark Awakening series arc. This is the second Pillars of Magic arc, following the conclusion of Pillars of Magic: Dominion. The Dominion arc was a series of five books that finished back in 2019 and that is set about 13 years prior to the start of Resurrection. The books take place in the same world, with the same characters, and while there is a considerable time jump, the stories are very much connected. Kasey does a nice job reacquainting readers with the characters, world, and plot threads here, which I found helpful given the time between this book and Absolution, which ended the Dominion arc. So patient readers who are ok with not understanding everything right away could probably jump in here. But expect some disorientation, especially as the book opens with Gabe awakening and confused about what is going on. I really love this series, and if this story sounds appealing, I would encourage you to start from the beginning with Inheritance.

Read Jay’s review in its entirety here.

The entire series only rates 3 Stars for me

The author leads the reader on a wild goose chase most of the time, leaving much needed answers and plot points unaddressed. characters are introduced, given some page/chapter time, and then not developed any further. (What was the purpose of Bryar? His character was left to flounder in the abyss. He did nothing to move the story along. What was the fate of Page? Of Max Hart? Of the entire Rou clan? how did Gabe resettle into his old life? Storylines were just left up in the air.) The author really needed help making sense of all her thoughts because it often felt like she was trying to head off into many different directions at the same time and nothing was developed adequately. Both an editor and a proofreader were desperately needed to tighten up these stories. And, by the way, the word is spelled "chic," not "sheik." FYI.

I have been eagerly awaiting this book as the ending of Pillars of Magic: Dominion Chapter left me breathless. It’s now almost fifteen years later, Seiran is older, a little wiser, still being used by the Dominion, and Gabe has been in the ground the whole time, asleep.
There is excitement, pain, torture, betrayal, awakenings, and a love that is still there even after everything. This book is amazing and I can’t wait to see where the author takes me next.

I am really lucky at the moment as I read one great book after another. I love it when I have a lucky streak

so Lissa Kasey provided one of my favorite books this year - which was not surprising as I love most of her books. And this is a different take on magic, vampires, witches and the main relationship. the world-building is well done and the author descripes this world perfectly without being to obvious in describing it. I loved that.

Serian and Gabe are a great couple and I loved how we see them find their way together. normally I am not a big fan of second chance novels but I am not quite sure that this would count.I absolutely adored them as a couple. obviously there is a lot of history between them (I read after reading this book that there is a series about them already ... I did not know that but I don't think it is necessary to read that to enjoy this book, not sure I will read it now - except for Sams story)

the story was really interesting and the suspense plot was very well written I really hope that we get more books with Gabe and Serian as MCs. I am not so sure after reading the epilogue but one can hope

all in all a great story and I can't wait to read the next book in this series

Seiran and Gabe had a rocky start. Time hadn’t erased their bond, it merely withered - waiting for its chance to restore itself again. Can past hurts be forgotten or forgiven?

A fantastic book and I really enjoyed it.

Resurrection by Lissa Kasey is the first book in her Pillars of Magic: Dominion spin-off series, forebodingly titled Pillars of Magic: Dark Awakening. In Resurrection, readers follow Seiran Rou, the head of the Department of Magical Investigations at the Dominion, as he deals with a whole lot of stuff going down. First, there’s a powerful golem running around and Sei intends to put it to rest without hurting any of the souls tied to it. But before he can do that, Sei’s vampire lover, Gabe, is reawakened after thirteen years in the ground. Neither Gabe nor Sei have any clue who - or what - pulled Gabe from his slumber, but there’s too much magic in the air (golems, necromancy, and dark magic, oh my!) for Gabe’s reawakening to be a coincidence. As secrets and lies start revealing themselves, as the Dominion goes too far, Sei will have to trust in old friends and call on his ties to the vampire and fae communities if he hopes to save his family, his lover, the magical community, and even the human race from the impending destruction coming for them. With an old love by his side and a new strength flowing within him, Seiran Rou has a whole new adventure ahead of him.

Resurrection incorporates about as many urban fantasy elements as it possibly can. If you’re looking for a story that manages to pack in witches, vampires, fae, golems, and romance all in one cohesive plot, this is the book (and series) for you. Lissa Kasey pulls no stops on just how much fantasy and action she can incorporate into one book; with all the twists and turns in the action, I’m pretty sure the pages couldn’t hold anymore. Kasey also packs a lot of action and plot advancement into this one story. Between golems, finding the source of some powerful dark magic, Gabe reappearing in Sei’s life, Dominion fallout, and discovering hidden secrets, Seiran has a lot to deal with. And when you add in the romance factor from his old lover coming back after over a decade away? It’s a wonder everyone makes it through the plot with their sanity in check.

Lissa Kasey’s writing is easy to get lost in, and even easier to enjoy. All of Kasey’s character types and plot devices should be familiar to any fantasy/urban fantasy reader, but Kasey weaves them into a unique world that will pull the reader in. I think my only complaint while reading Resurrection is just how tied into the PIllars of Magic: Dominion series this book is. As the first book in the spin-off series, I wasn’t expecting so many references to things that happened off the page in the original Pillars of Magic books. I almost hesitate to call this a true spin-off series, as it seems more like a continuation of the Dominion series rather than stories separate from the Dominion plots. With all the character overlap, and with so many references to the past (some of them were explained later in the book, but some references to past events were left untouched), I would have a hard time recommending Resurrection to anyone who hasn’t already read the Pillars of Magic: Dominion series. This may be the first book in a spin-off series, but there are too many references that readers would need to know from the original series to fully appreciate everything that is said and done in Resurrection. I definitely recommend Resurrection, but I also recommend reading all the Pillars of Magic: Dominion titles before starting in on the Pillars of Magic: Dark Awakening spin-off series.

Thank you to the author and Gay Romance Reviews for providing an advanced reader copy of Resurrection in exchange for an honest review.

I have wanted to read the original series to this for a LONG time and with reading this one, yeah, I can now confirm I was right and want to go back and read from the beginning. This is an amazing paranormal book. One that I cannot recommend enough. It has EVERYTHING you want. From action, to betrayals, all kinds of paranormals, a twist that just makes the book not able to put down. I was in heaven.

I love the different takes I read in paranormal books. That's why I think I love them so much. I've said that before. And reading this take on how the paranormal world works was an amazing one. From the way male witches are treated to the way vampires live. There are certain things that are and aren't done. And I thoroughly enjoyed the take in this one. I love Seiran's will to survive anything in this book, but I also feel his pain at having a gift he doesn't want at times, because the pains and all the crap he has to endure that come with it. From losing the love of his life to the possibilities of losing his own children. And that's a whole other story as well, but you have to read to find out that one. But Seiran is a survivor. No matter what happens in his life, and it's a lot, he's determined, if nothing else, to be there for his kids, the way no one was there for him. Even the love of his life. Gabe.

Having Gabe pop back up in Seiran's life when he did was no coincidence, but again, I feel for Seiran because it's another notch of something that is thrown at him at the wrong time. But he handles it. Whether good or bad, he deals with. And I love it. I love Gabe too. Knowing what he went through and making the sacrifice he did, although it wasn't known for that at the time, and then being pulled from the rest he needed before he was ready and having to navigate life with no memories of much of anything. Yet, his instincts told him what he needed to do and where he needed to be and he listened. And because of it, things may have gotten bad, but he was able to make a start in fixing things that were wrong the first time. He's a survivor as well.

I think that's what I love so much about these two. They've had so much thrown at them for so long, and yet, despite everything, they've survived. There may have been times when they didn't want to, but they endured. They tried to take what was wrong and make it right. Make a stand and show that sometimes, being underestimated is not a smart thing.

I can't wait to see what is coming next with this series. I'm definitely hooked. This was the perfect book for me and I'm so glad I got the opportunity to read it.

I really enjoyed this book and its take on magic, paranormal beings, urban fantasy, and detective mystery. There are some common and comfortable traits of magic users and paranormal beings, but the world and its characters feel original and complex as well. Though there are some very dark aspects to the story, there is also deep love, sweet affection, humor, and a healthy dose of sensuality.
This world and its characters are QUITE complex. There are a LOT of characters, each with their own back story. Seiran and Gabe are, of course, in the forefront, with their feelings most on display, but they're not the only ones caught up in a society on a razor's edge, unsettled from previous violent conflicts, upheavals in divisions of power, prejudices, and a lack of understanding. Seiran and Gabe are powerful individuals, magically speaking, but Seiran has been repeatedly put down by others in power, and Gabe begins this story having been essentially gone from the world for a decade and a half, not even fully aware of his own abilities for much of the time. Their frustration, sadness, and anger made me really feel for them and root for them from the start.
One thing I wish I had done myself would have been to read the previous Pillars of Magic series. I had not realized initially how directly they would be linked, but once I started this one, I also didn't want to stop and go back to the beginning. I ended up reading this book as if it were intentionally in medias res. This did kind of work, since for most of the book, the characters themselves are doing a lot of unraveling of memories and history, especially Gabe, who starts the book with no memory of his past. As his memories returned and as Seiran and others dealt with the consequences of the past, I learned as well. But knowing the many side characters, who were clearly from previous books, and having a fuller understanding of what had happened prior to this book, would've made it a little less complicated to understand.
I fully intend to start the previous series - like, today - and will definitely be reading the next in this series.

This is a densely woven narrative with a lot of plot threads-- it’s definitely helpful, for context on both world and characters, to have read the books in the earlier series that this one spins off from, but not technically necessary (still absolutely worth it, however, as they’re as engrossing as this one). I can’t say enough good things about the intricacy of the world building, the complexity of the conspiracies and hierarchies and power structures that make up the characters day-to-day existences, and the relatability of the characters, who are somehow deeply human in spite of being immortal, not really human at all (some of them) and blessed and/or cursed with the kind of power that could end all life on earth. Watching Gabe try to sort through a past he doesn’t remember and Seiran trying to hold himself together, because he remembers everything, while trying to defend his family, solve mass murders, and bring down a corrupt organization bent on destroying everything he holds dear is intense and mesmerizing-- there’s not a single dull moment, and there are plenty of heart-stopping ones. I think my only issue with this one, and it’s not so much an issue as a pet peeve: could there not be more than one decent female character in this entire book? It’s bad enough that the “Big Bad” is an organization composed of women who repress, exploit, and kill male magic users, but there’s also Seiran’s evil and manipulative mother, and pretty much every other woman in the novel, with the possible exception of one female subordinate who I’m pretty sure didn’t turn to be that bad? Unless I missed her turn for evil doing in the rest of the carnage, which is possible. Overall, however, I really loved this book, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next one.

I want to thank the author/publisher for giving me an advanced reading copy of this book for this review. Although I am very grateful for their generosity, the following review is completely my own and not influenced by either the author or the publisher.

Overall, I enjoyed Lissa Kasey's new book Resurrection (Pillars of Magic: Dark Awakening, #1). The book was enjoyable and fast read. I do have a few specific comments I'm going to highlight.

First, I had never read anything by Lissa Kasey, so this was my first adventure into the world she created. While I was reading the book, I wondered if there were prequels to the novel but I didn't know there was a prior series until after I'd finished the book. I mention this because knowing there is a prior series involving the characters makes a lot of the backstory make more sense. There were a ton of throwback references that seemed odd for the first book in a series.

Second, there is one sex scene in the book that I really didn't think was actually necessary. In fact, there's only one sex scene in the entire book and it just kind of halts the momentum of the book when we get to that point. I know this is an MM Urban Fantasy so some expect explicit sex, but I don't think the scene actually added anything to the plot.

Third, I like the characters. I think the fantasy world that Kasey has created is interesting and consistent. As a whole, I really did find this book fun.

Fourth, one of my biggest complaints is that it was a pretty slow start. There were two really good scenes right off the bat, but then things tended to slow down and there was a bunch of relationship stuff that really seemed to slow the plot and prevent the story from moving forward.

ARC received from GRR for an honest review.

Gabe is an ancient vampire pulled from his eternal sleep in the ground. When he awakens he doesn't remember anything and that's normal for being asleep for almost fifteen years but it's disheartening to Seiran his witch and love. As Gabe is slowly getting his memories back, Seiran is enmeshed in a case of a golem with dead vampire souls animating it. Seiran is constantly getting push back from the Dominion on his investigations and other witches going over his head needlessly. There is no respect for the most powerful witch on earth. Seiran sees that his time may be limited but he has to make sure his kids are safe. Seiran with the help of members of his Dominion team and members of the vampire coven are trying to find out who's killing all the vampires, witches and humans that have recently been found. Someone is still messing with Gabe and it may spill over onto Seiran too. Will Gabe and Seiran be able to find who's behind the golem and the missing people before someone gets to them first?

This is a well written book with Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance and Mystery elements all entwined. The world and character building are really good. This is a continuing book from the Pillars of Magic Dominion Chapter, so a lot of the backstory is from there. I was a little confused in the first few chapters, until I realized it's continuing, and then I just continued reading like I knew who everyone and their story was. I was then easily able to enjoy the story. I'm off to read book two of this series and then I will be reading the original series. Highly recommend this book.

(Revenant is a generic term for the undead, here I believe it speaks to the darkest part of a vampire, the uncontrollable part)

Seiran, is the “Pillar of Earth, the most powerful earth mage on the planet”. Mother Earth keeps him alive for her own (possibly nefarious) use. Sei just wants to do his job, protect his family and in general keep a fragile peace between witches, vampires, and other things that go bump in the night.

Gabe, his vampire lover. In the ground for ten years because his Revenant was taking him over. Something or someone summoned Gabe back. His memories fractured, Not knowing what his purpose is other than he is compelled to be with and protect Sei. Both men (?) working together to solve the mystery of the Golem.

This is an intricate, tangled, complex, and at times confusing story. While not always understanding what was happening, it was a very absorbing book. A lot of characters to get to know. Some of them are truly evil while others are just out of their depth and being used.

This author has a great reach with her stories which can sometimes lead to momentary confusion. That all said, I enjoyed it tremendously. An (almost) sad love story, great characters, a perplexing mystery, and the triumph of good over evil (for now) made this one of my top ten for the year (so far).

I received an arc of this book.

Hook line and sinker!
I was captivated from the beginning and never quite released. The way we were fed small bits here and there - never quite enough to sate us - No that would be too easy - just enough to keep us on the hook

I have never read Kassey's work but I can tell you I will be discovering the previous works as well as upcoming ones. The cast is so eclectic, tangible. I want to know them better, spend more time in their world.

I easily connected with Gabe - I felt like both of us were a bit in awe at the events happening around us, at times unsure but yet not - the sense of familiarity in a world of unknowns
And Rou?
I felt for him wanted to protect him. Not that he needed it physically but emotionally he was vulnerable.
Sometimes standing for what you believe can be isolating- but he never wavered in his belief to make things right.

There is so much here
Action, adventure, mystery, suspense, family, and intimate connections
I definitely have more questions than answers but I'm strangely okay with it - Says something about the writing
The author did a fabulous job of introducing the characters, building this unique universe filled with magic and mayhem.
Not to mention capturing my heart completely

More than a decade apart, and yet, there are flames that never die… or do they?
After a really crappy day, Seiran did not expect to be notified that the love of his life is back from the dead… The icing on the cake is the fact that he does not even remember him. How is Seira supposed to cope with all this drama, and keep sane? If only Gabe would remember him…
Gabe is having a problem coping with being back to the living. He went to ground to stop his revenant from taking over, and somehow he feels he is not ready yet. Too many memories, too many people and yet… there is one special person that stirs something deep inside of him. Can he really be married to a witch?
I am always a bit hesitant when some of my favourite characters come back after some time. I loved the Pillar of Magic series, and was afraid this new chapter would not be up to par… but it is! Characters have evolved in a very convincing way, the plot is intriguing, the pace fast… I loved it from the start to the end.
I'm so looking forward the next one!
I received a copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

Wow!

I didn’t realize this book was a new series based on the PoM Dominion series until I started reading it. It’s not a requirement to have read the previous series first but it will give a lot more character and plot background information.

What an incredible ride! This author has the incredible ability to incorporate so many characters into a story, making them all believable, fully developed parts of the plotline. It’s an amazing talent that not many have. But the MCs of this book are Sei and Gabe.

This book is a hurt/comfort, witch/vampire, magical mixing and power attuning new beginning; and is also about rebuilding or even, reshaping, their bond and relationship while, of course, the decks are stacked against them. Trust isn’t something either man comes to easily and now there is even more on the line.

I like the Gabe that awakens in this story more than the one from the previous series. And I love that now Sei has back up that is truly just to support him. This book leaves me ready for the next one and I can’t wait to see how the pieces fall in the cleanup.

Gabe feels himself pulled back after going to ground over 10 years ago. He awakens to find his memories shattered and bound to a very strong witch. One thing he does know is someone wants to use his power. He can feel the pull. Seiran is that witch and Gabe’s return is just one more thing in his tough day. He found a golem on campus and needs to find the maker. Soon the two find themselves fighting a change in power that could drastically change the world, using an army of the dead.

After reading Resurrection, I find myself intrigued. I did not read the beginning stories but it in no way diminished my enjoyment of this excellent story. It made me want to go and read some more set in this world. The plot was incredibly well done and the heroes are more than just heroes. Even though Gabe’s memory was not there, both men felt the pull. You quickly want the best for them and can’t help routing for as happy ending. I know I want more and there is more just for me and you too.

We have the continuation of Sei & Gabe's story. It's been 13 years after the last book in the Pillars of Magic: Dominion Chapter Series. Gabe has been pulled from his sleep, but the main issue is he has major holes in his memory. Sei has had a major time living without Gabe, and he still hasn't forgiven him. He was left alone raising children that he didn't want but loves unconditionally & would lay his life down for. Sei still hasn't found the respect that he is deserved as being the Pillar of the Earth. He is investigating a Golem who was created by death magic and what he uncovers is a gruesome mess. On top of this, Sei has to deal with the attraction that is still there after all these years. Gabe promises to do better, but that is something he has stated many times in the past. Words are not going to cut it now. I highly recommend reading the Pillars of Magic: Dominion Chapter Series first. It's not that you will be lost, but it will make more sense seeing how we have gotten to this point.

I received an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

If you love books about magic, witches and vampires this is definitely one you’ll want to read. Especially since there is romance tying several characters together. Lissa has another wonderful series for us!

I have read 20 of Lissa's books and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. It is best to start at the beginning of each series for full appreciation of the plots, characters and settings.

In 'Resurrection' you have Gabe, a vampire who has 'gone to ground' for 15 years being reunited with Seiran, his Focus. There is an equal measure of hate, love, distrust and confusion swirling around them as they try to rebuild the relationship they previously had and mend all the mistakes that were made.

In the midst of this, there are golems, an organization of witches, a slew of vampires and several competing agencies who are power hungry and less than honest with their actions.

You'll fall in love with Kaine, Max, Page, Gage and Seiran.

But beware. Dark Magic is not to be trifled with!

Im giving this a 3.5 stars. Im being a little petty on this.

The reason is that this is part of an ongoing storyline, (that wasnt mentioned about in the blurb,) that I definately recommend you read before attempting this book.

I had not read it and was unaware of alot of previous information, even the beginning of the book feels like its a follow on. This is my first step into this storyline and a few times I felt like giving up. Im glad I didnt as I was sucked into the book.

Im not sure Gabe could fully be held accountable for his actions prior to "going to ground". However, once he got his full memory back I think Ronnie still held back and Im not sure just how much of that is to do with managing mostly alone for so long. I also am unsure how he didnt recongise the power that helped create the golum, when it was under his nose for so long.

I do suggest you read the previous storyline first.

This book kinda reminded me of soul bound. If I didn't pay attention to every word, I'd be several pages down with no idea what happened. It's a good story but I felt like the progress was kinda slow. So much time spent inside the MCs' heads with Seiran especially overthinking EVERYTHING. I get that's part of his character but do i really need to know EVERY SINGLE THING that goes through his head? You can imagine how one would lose track of what they're reading without even realizing it. Like when you know you're listening to your professor in class but suddenly realize that your eyes have been glazed over for the past five minutes and you can't remember what they said.
Despite all that I did like the story. Only half way through did I realize that a whole series came before this. But it didn't detract from my enjoying this book. I'm definitely looking forward to reading Seiran's and Gabe's full story in the previous series.

I started this before realizing it was a spin-off/continuation of another series. I was already drawn in, so took the time to go back and pick up the 1st series. And I'm so glad I did. While I'm sure readers can start here, the history between the characters is what really makes this book stand out.

This book takes place just over 10 years after the 1st series. This was a perfect length of time between events. There has been time to heal but not so long that events are forgotten or brushed away. You don't feel like you missed anything during the time jump.

I loved the story line. It was a perfect way to start the next sequence of books. The way the story built and new information presented was not rushed or drawn out. You're hooked from the start all the way to the end. I will definitely be reading the rest of the books in this series as soon as they are written.

I shouldn't have liked this one considering I had no prior knowledge of what is obviously a vast world with complex lore and culture and most of all, characters, but damn, I really did. I am... mad/sad about some stuff (mostly basically the fact Gabriel missed so many years of their life, especially kids' life) but I liked all the rest - the mystery plot, the romance /and I don't usually like second-chance stuff), the... well, those are the most important bits =D. The ending was, honestly, par for the course for what I know of this author but acceptable enough.

Honestly, while I was tempted to go back to the original series, knowing how it ends (because of the beginning of this book) I just couldn't. I am not strong enough to deal with unhappy endings even knowing, like I do know, it will eventually get a HEA.

Anyway, recommend.

I didn't realize this was a continuation if the author's Dominion series and since I have only read one of thos books and it was a long time ago I spent a lot of the book just as confused as Gabe was. As for the writing, it was wonderful and not that I know what is happening now in this world will probably continue with this series. There was so much going on but I didn't get confused as to what was happening it was more about the basis of where the story began and what happened to these characters before. I do enjoy these guys and this world and look forward to seeing more of this family and hopefully some more in depth stories about others too.

I received a copy of this book and am giving an honest review
