I quickly tug on the two Velcro tabs, and my styled garment falls away, forming a backpack into which I hurriedly deposit my pistol, theatrical beard, and cap. In just moments, I am jogging away with measured, unhurried steps, my colorful shorts flapping, and my disheveled hair bouncing in the breeze. There are still no screams of discovery.Synaptic words with sounds that flash only between minds, a bizarre harmony that fills two minds but resides in one body. Theirs was a guarded relationship, but after tormented infancy of conflict and self-abuse, the two minds have finally struck a bargain.I separated the ventilation ducting assemblies to insert a pad that would retain liquid for several days. Since then, I have returned each Sunday morning to introduce a mixture of hazardous cancer-causing solvents into the ducting, slowly increasing the dosage by several drops weekly until a proper concentration of vapors is maintained.That rushing sound is followed by the explosive snap when it reaches its end and whips back upon itself, and then the exquisite crisp pain that once I feared but now anticipate with excitement. Another day has begun. Water for me to drink, all that I want.I hear loud, angry voices in the darkness. I strain to glean meaning from the shouts and screams. Something is deeply wrong! “Mom?” I call out. “Dad?” There is instant and total silence. I quickly get up from my bed and cautiously approach my foster parents’ bedroom. From the darkness of the hall, I can see into the dimly lighted bedroom through the open door. There is a small stranger who starts to turn slowly towards me.Twelve tales depict and contrast the essence of good and evil.
