Matt Drabble puts a different spin on an old legend with his monstrous novel (almost 500 pages) The Cure. The story features a likable lead facing her own mortality and an interesting cast, and the plot provides some grisly scenes and much food for thought. Police inspector Alison Raines hasn’t much time left. She’s built a career, but with her health failing, she decides to close out some of the cold cases that bother her. However, something strange is afoot, beginning with a drunk and disorderly. As her oncology medicines make her question what she’s experiencing, she and her partner and the medical examiner find themselves with more questions than the modern mind could answer. Written from multiple viewpoints, The Cure ends with a conclusion that leaves the potential for a sequel.
For the most part this was an enjoyable take on the Vampire genre. The plotline was good, and the characterisation excellent - I felt really committed to every character in the way intended.
What I would say though is that it was definitely longer than needed, with what felt like a fair amount of repetition. Worth sticking with though, and I would actually like to read more in this universe (but with a slighter shorter exposition period ;))
Enjoyable read..well written...nice to not have typos and grammatical errors distracting me! The story line is original, the characters rounded and full...I will look for more of Matt Drabble's work.. I recommend this book to everyone..while descriptive, Mr Drabble does not revel in gory nor offensive content
I have been a huge fan of this author . His books are generally for surprise twist and unpredictable events. I believe the story was stretched along . Somewhere in between the books gets boring. It gets repetitive at many places. It would have been nice if author has kept this short. Somewhere in the end I feel that author wants to just complete the book. I expected alot from this book considering previous work of the author. I hope his next book will be same as his earlier works. Cheers
I really enjoyed this. I wasn’t sure if I would as I’m not a fan of female hero’s. But Raines was different. And rather unlucky! I loved the vampires and how the main vampire could still make mistakes and I loved where those mistakes took him and Raines and her partner. And there is to be a second book. I’m really looking forward to it. Nice one Matt! (Again!) 👏👏👏
I seriously couldn't read this one fast enough., but hey we all have to sleep right? Who knew vampires had a conscience? Well they're right here within these pages. Raine's is definitely my favorite character. Sort of like a female Dirty Harry. You just have to admire someone like her. Surely this story could go on and on especially with the twist at the end. I'll be keeping an eye out. Hint hint😁
So well written. We spend much time in each characters head. We are privy to their thoughts, experiences, insights, opinions. There is no idiotic dialogue filler, just a clever telling of an intense story. Ok all the usual vampire tropes are here. Which was just a bit disappointing. Yes, sunlight, holy water, crucifixes, garlic are all deadly. Glamour/hypnosis is present. Super strength and speed, finely honed senses are of course included. As is the summoning of fog/mist and shape changing into (not) bats. And a central character who has escaped detection for hundreds of years. So the cryptid lore is all present and familiar. But do not expect a happy ending. Oh no. The final chapters create twists and turns that satisfy the devoted reader. Unreservedly recommend.
Though the story was good enough to keep me from giving up on it, it also felt too long. Like there was way to much character development on characters who were about to die anyway. It took away from the story and made it a lot longer than it should have been.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It kept me longing for more to see what was going to happen. This is a must read, if you enjoy a good vampire and suspense book!
