“A remarkable story written so descriptively that you feel you are right there in the street…” A conflicted father… After discovering his daughter is supporting the rioters, a furious Sergeant Andy Wong of the Police Tactical Unit, begins to question his own motivation for enforcing laws hated by the public. A daughter exposed… Alice’s secret is out… Her father knows she’s helping the protestors... and her friends now know her dad's a cop. A helpless young man… When bullets are fired on the streets of Hong Kong, Jacob Watson must sit on the sidelines, and watch while his friends and fellow protestors take on the might of the Chinese Communist Party. Thousands arrested, bullets fired, lives destroyed. When will it end? In the action packed final instalment of the Hong Kong Series, Jacob Watson, Sergeant Andy Wong, and his daughter Alice, are finally brought together by the one thing they all have in common. A love for the city they call home.
Mark David Abbott was born in Cyprus but spent most of his formative years growing up in New Zealand. A love for travel has meant that he has spent much of his life living and working in different countries around the world and currently calls India home. Mark has worked variously as a barman, a factory hand, supermarket shelf stocker, and a real estate salesman, but now devotes his time to writing and traveling. Mark is a keen runner and in between runs is slowly building an impressive collection of Gin.
This is a story that You are drawn right into, you feel the conflict between family when Policeman Andy Wong starts wondering exactly What are we fighting for, these 'rules' really make no sense for all who live here in Hong Kong. And his daughter, Alice, is a Medic, just trying to help those hurt and suffering but most often with the group Andy must work against to enforce the laws. The despair and fear, the courage and fight of those determined to stand up for the love of country and their neighbors. This fight Did happen, the people of Hong Kong dealt with many horrors and fears in a short period. This author writes so very descriptively in this fictionalized tale of that time, that your breath is short and heart is in your throat for most of the story! The characters become friends, you care about them and are praying for the best, we remember that Family IS important, and that no matter what we believe or do they will Always be there caring for each one of us. This quick series has shown me things I didn't know about at all, far from my life, but people are the same anywhere we go, just trying to get through the day without any problems. A fantastic story that inspires me to stay true to my own beliefs.
Kept me on edge all the way through. Felt á if I was there in Hong Kong. All his books are so descriptive that makes me feel I know the places and people. A must read for anyone, but what happens next to our hero??
Life is a struggle, it's not easy and often it is not fair. We like to think of good vs. evil, right vs. wrong but the reality is mostly the middle ground. We all have our struggles, what we know is our duty doesn't always align with what's in our hearts.
For Andy Wong his duty is to uphold the laws but when Alice, his medic daughter starts crossing lines he has some tough choices before him. Readers get to experience what people have gone through and are still going through. The struggle in Hong Kong is sadly not a made-up work of fiction. The author does such a wonderful job of highlighting that there are people on both sides. As a society, we all struggle with our priorities. Doing what we think is best we sometimes don't do what's right.
These characters come to life before our eyes. We care about them, we become invested, and in doing so, hopefully, we look at our own lives and embrace the things and people we take for granted. I think this series is more than just a story, there are lessons to be learned.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author and this is a voluntary honest review.
The final to this awesome trilogy. A Fiction-tale on actual happenings when HK is returned to the People's Republic of China and its laws, that don't care about the people at all. Like every other dictatorship, all China wants is to control it's people and fill the pockets of the ruling class. What do they care about the interests of the inhabitants, their freedom, their rights. And when the people don't give in, they get thrown into jails, beaten and tortured until they're quiet. But the people of HK don't all want to accept their fate and during the series we learn about some of those: Jacob, an expat from Australia, Andy, a HK cop who slowly realises what's happening, and his daughter Alice, a medic student out on the streets helping the protestors. An amazing trilogy that was.
The conclusion of the Hong Kong Series, which tells the stories of various fictionalized characters involved in the protests against the freedom restricting Chinese takeover. This book focuses on the protesters sieges of Chinese University and H.K. Polytechnic, both in Kowloon. Heart pumping, page turning scenes play out as even the police begin to question the motives of Beijing's regime. A really good book that shows how the proud citizens of Hong Kong are sadly losing their democracy. Plenty of lessons and warnings to take heed of here.
This is an incredible book with the despair and fight for freedom from the people of Hong Kong. Very brave people and the reality of their lives. Very well written, great characters, page turner. Excellent job. I received a copy and voluntary leaving a review.
Riots in the streets against the police and the Chinese government controls. Jacob meets Alice during a riot and a connection is made. Alice is a medic and part of the resistance. An action packed drama with a stand off at a university. A dangerous plan to get the protesters out and safe. This novel is hard to put down.
I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. The major takeaway I had from this story is that freedom is a very precious commodity that must be protected at all costs because once it is lost it is beyond difficult to regain. Mr. Abbott has created characters that the reader can't help but bond with and relate to. They are real and relatable and determined. Mr. Abbott has drawn such a clear picture of what has been going on in Hong Kong and the devastation that has been brought to the people there. The only winners here are those who sit up in their offices and issue orders that must be carried out. This is an emotional, suspenseful, action-filled, touching, regretable, inspiring story. If you don't read anything else, make sure you read this trilogy. It is one of those series that will stay with you long after you turn the last page. I highly recommend it.
This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
I found this story interesting and believable. It remember some things about the Hong Kong protests and was very disappointed in our government’s lack of support. This story personifies the spirit of democracy. A brutal crackdown on the people of a democratic society by the Chinese Communist Party. Taking over in all but name. I found the story fascinating with a lot of action, suspense, drama, intrigue and the issues that caused families to disintegrate. I highly recommend reading this entire series.
This is my first book from this author and wow, what have I been missing. This story is very well written, has great characters, and I was drawn in from the very beginning. This is Book 3 of the series but it didn't affect the story for me and could be read alone. Awesome doesn't do it justice, you have to add to your read now list. I received this book for free from the author and wanted to leave an honest review.
Perfect story for what's happening right now! "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke I made sure to read this book very slowly so I could absorb every scene, every emotion, every action. It's easy to listen to real world propaganda blaring out of the idiotbox with mainstream stations being owned by the very people running this shitshow, but the time to debate is well and truly over. We either come together as one, or we, as a human race, are literally done for as far as freedom goes.So many people with the inability to comprehend - or possibly simply lacking bravery of any kind - believe the vomit spewed out 24/7 without questioning anything. Most have been led to believe that the Chinese people, as a whole, are complicit in this nightmare. But look around, open your eyes, a great deal of people around the entire world are not complicit, they do not agree, they are peace-loving, kind and truly love their fellow humans. It's the so-called leaders of the majority of countries around the world who are 100% complicit in crimes against humanity. Wake up and fight for your freedom while you still have the chance! Time is well and truly up now! Well written, well thought out and totally engaging story! Another fantastic series by my all-time fav author! I applaud you, Mr. Abbott! God bless!
Andy, Alice and Jason; bound through blood, love, friendship and the unwillingness to be ruled by Communist China.
They each keep fighting in their own way. Alice and Jason on the side of the protestors, and Andy on the side of law enforcement, albeit more and more reluctantly each day.
Was it all worth it? Of the thousands arrested, how many didn't survive their incarceration? Of those who participated or helped in any way, how any have had their lives ruined? How many are in hiding today? How many have had to leave Hong Kong, never to be able to return?
Freedom is a basic principle of life and no regime should ever be powerful enough to take that away from their populace.
It has taken me time to write this review as I wanted to reread the book again. I was wondering if it would still impact me the way it did the first time I read it. I had first read it just after a family I corresponded with in HK disappeared off all social media. We had been sharing photos and they had been considering leaving HK for Canada. So at that time the book was a gut punch.
Forward a year and I've reread it, twice. I read, a lot, it's not uncommon for me to read two books a day( Retirement can be boring without books)., so a book has to really stand out for me to remember it after a bit. This book not only has stuck in my memory but even just reading the title gives me wrench.
Mark David Abbott has written a series of books, The Hong Kong Seties,of which this is its crown jewel. He takes us to the streets of Hong Kong and into the life of Andy Wong.. In a time when corruption and cruelty are the norm,Andy is desperately holding onto his morals and beliefs. Then he finds that being a father to Alice may become his hardest challenge.
Historical Fiction is often difficult to read, often you are gasping for air with the dryness, or drowning in fantasy, but Mark David Abbott has conquered this genre. A fiction that keeps the pages turning and a truth that weaves through each page. A truth that lingers in your subconscious and makes us grateful for the freedom we enjoy. Many others don't.
