I’m Jo and the death of my mother revealed a whole lot of secrets she was keeping. Like the fact that my sperm-donor father was a freaking angel who couldn’t keep it in his pants and slept with a woman he should never have been with. Or the fact I’m not mortal and would one day be a reaper of souls.
Reaping souls, now there is something I never dreamed I would do, but here I am doing just that. Or at least I was, until souls started becoming Lost. And that’s when things went south.
When I stupidly agreed to help discover what was causing the Lost without reading the fine print first. Now a lot of immortals would like to see me dead because of what I might become. To top it off, I ended up blood bound to a powerful half-demon who is supposed to be a reaper’s sworn enemy. Funny thing is he may be the only one I can trust.
This was a terrific read. Jo is our main character (never Josephine pls!) who, upon the death of her mother, discovers a heritage hidden her whole life. She's whisked away to learn what having angel blood and being a reaper means and all the trials that come with it. She's sent on a quest with Caius, a Demonborn, that is fraught with danger (everything wants to kill her) yet she is startled to find that even enemies can be more than imagined. The heart of the story is a mystery...what is happening to all the lost souls that are disappearing before they can be reaped? I love the banter, the cast of side characters and the mythical creatures! I'm very excited to continue this series!
A.D. Trosper "unveils" another engrossing and delightful story. (See what I did there.)
I have enjoyed other books by this author and I am always struck by the ease with which Ms. Trosper creates her worlds. Her language is unadorned and straightforward. The prose itself quickly slips into the background as the setting she creates fills your imagination. The world-within-worlds reality of Unveiled is truly fascinating and I can't wait to see what further lands are explored in the sequel(s) to this book.
Moreover, Trosper manages to put us smack dab inside the heroine's head and never lets it slip. Jo, short for Josephine, is an ordinary, if extremely stubborn, young woman who has never suspected anything supernatural about her life. But when her mother dies, she discovers just how wrong she was. From her unusual parentage to her decision to join the ranks of Reapers (guides who help souls to the appropriate afterlife), she has to embrace a new worldview which she does with a only a smidge of kicking and a good dollop of sarcastic snark. She is tough and vulnerable at the same time; you can't help but love her. As for her counterpart and reluctant partner-in-crime Caius, he has a Darcy-like haughtiness that just begs for a comeuppance. The two mains play well off each other, with a great deal of enjoyable spark. I bet their relationship will bear further watching.
Trosper's mix of angels, demons, and older gods is fun and fresh. If you love paranormal romances with a strong sense of snark and humanity, Unveiled should definitely be on your TBR list.
Loved this book. Such a unique story as can only be told by the great writing of this author. Whether fantasy or New Adult A.D. Trosper always delivers a great story. The main character Jo is overwhelmed by the changes in her life but manages to cope with her wonderful sense of humor and sarcasm . The play between the demons reapers and angels is so original and totally absorbing. Can't wait for the next installment.
This was such a unique and captivating story. Jo was an ordinary eighteen-year-old caught in an extraordinary situation. She was likable and relatable and I loved how she reacted to all the crazy situations and just sort of took them all in stride. I really liked reading about her shifting into a raven. I've never read a raven shifter book before and found that to be really unique and interesting. I LOVED Caius. He was super sexy and his character was so intriguing. I can't wait to see how their relationship develops in the next book. One of my favorite parts of the book was the world A.D Trosper built around the reapers and the demons and the cities beyond the veil. This was all completely new to me and made me want to know more about the myths and legends of the afterlife. It made me think of the Persephone myth I studied in grade school and now I want to re-read it! Will be starting the next book in the series later today.
This has so many fun things going on. Angels, demons, reapers, magic!
After the death of their mom, Jo and her sister find out there's a lot going on they didn't know about when the reapers showed up to take their mom away and realized that the girls could see them. Of course, something goes wrong and she gets paired up with a super hot guy from the dark side to try to find out what's going on. There's more to their histories than they thought and they end up on the run. I'm excited to see where this is going.
I really loved this book, it had all the elements of a fantastic YA fantasy. Jo and Victoria are sisters who couldn’t be more different. When their mother dies, and they are forced to face the truth of their origins, they are brought into a world they never would’ve guessed existed. Within the world, they each have their own roles, one as a Reaper and one as a Guardian.
Jo was my favorite character. She was feisty and strong. She did not back down even when other characters did.
The thing that bothered me about this book though was the two six month jumps within the story. The first is when Jo is first brought into the Reaper world and the second is just after she begins reaping. I feel as if a lot of the story is lost for these jumps. These time periods would’ve shown some real character development and would’ve helped the reader to divulge into this book’s world more thoroughly. With the time skip, I felt as if there was a bit of an info dump to explain it all, and it’s a shame because the book has so much going for it.
Unveiled pulled me in from the very first chapter and refused to let go. After the death of her mother, Jo discovers that not only are reapers real—she is one. Suddenly thrown into a hidden world of angels, demons, and politics among immortals, Jo has to figure out how to wield her powers, survive the factions coming for her, and solve the mystery of the disappearing souls known as the "Lost."
What truly set this book apart for me were the details:
Jo, the FMC, is everything I love in a heroine: sarcastic, capable, and emotionally layered. She doesn’t back down, but she also isn’t immune to grief, fear, or doubt.
The world-building is rich, balancing mythology with a modern edge. Reapers, angels, demons, and politics? Yes, please.
The banter is top-notch—snarky, smart, and just enough flirt to keep it tense without rushing anything.
And then there’s Caius. The man of one sentence per chapter — Sometimes sharp, sometimes tender, sometimes hilarious, but always perfectly placed. I lived for those lines.
The blood bond dynamic between Jo and Caius adds tension and intimacy without overpowering the plot, and I appreciated how their relationship develops slowly.
If you like Urban romantasy with great banter, lovable characters and an intriguing story, this book is for you
So good! A must read for PNR fans! Just wow. this book completely shocked me. 😱 it was slow pace and yet still moving perfectly . Im used to fast pace but this was beautiful! I couldn’t stop reading!! it just kept getting deeper and more intriguing then ever! I love this unique world with angels, reapers, and demonborns. Josephine aka joe and Caius will have you hooked! Jo’s friends are awesome and everyone needs a bestie like James! Its a slow-burn romance since Jo and Caius are natural born enemies.. but jokes on everyone. Once you get enemies together... well things happen! Huge-big-life-changing-events-happen!!! 😭😱❤️Get ready, is about to get real!! On to the next book!
Started a little slow and didn’t think I would get into it but by the end I am sucked in and can’t wait to continue on to the next book! Some things are a little predictable but liking the story!
Overall, this was an ok enough book for me. I enjoyed some parts of it and other parts I was just bored. I listened to the audiobook for this one and the narrator did a very good job!
The book had a good start and showed potential. Until, I started losing focus and interest in it. At least, for me. Jo and her sister lost their mom and they soooon find out about their otherness and this entire new world. They find out they are reapers and that their absentee father was an angel. Thus, begins their new journey into this world. Although, we barely get to "see" her sister.
For me, details are off about what is explained and what is not. Parts I found tedious, were unnecessary details about food - as in what exactly Jo was eating down to the alfredo fettuccini or the every.single.appetizers they ordered. But, one line was used to explaining about they received training and voila a year has passed. I would have liked to "see" some of it as in what badassery training she was received. I honestly did not care about the food she ate.
Another thing I found different in this was the attempt to be having dual point of view but it really wasn't. Randomly, I would get Caius's one liners at the end of Jo's scene. It would appear like Caius was there/invisible with his one liner input on her scene/decision but he truly wasn't as they were on two separate sides (demon). So I wasn't sure what the point of it was. It felt random to me. Although, the narrator Zachary had an amazing Caius voice, lol.
By the end of it all, I was more curious about and ready to finish the book vs. having a connection with the characters. There is no insta-love which is great. But there is also not enough chemistry, for me, between characters. Maybe, book 2 brings them together better with better dialogue. That's just my opinion.
Unveiled is a new adult urban-ish fantasy about Jo, a young woman who discovers she is half-angel after her mother's untimely death. She's tapped to become a Reaper, destined to shepherd souls across to their destiny in the afterlife, but some of those souls are going missing. She has to team up with Caius, a demon, in order to solve this mystery and learn about her own past.
The premise of this book was really interesting to me! However, I would have liked to see much more worldbuilding. I felt like most of the interesting elements of how the afterlife is structured, as well as the different kinds of beings that inhabit it, were introduced very quickly, and the multiple time jumps made it hard to settle in to the new world. I would have liked much more development of the very intriguing ideas present in this book.
I did really enjoy Caius's character. I'm not usually a big fan of dark and broody male leads, but he had a sense of kindness about him from the beginning that I appreciated.
One thing that really bugged me, and this is just a personal pet peeve but I'll share it in case anyone else finds it bothersome as I do, is that there was a TON of emphasis on how much food Jo eats while still remaining naturally very slim. This is one of my least favorite tropes in writing, and I wish there had been more development of Jo's other traits, like her relationship with her sister.
Unveiled is a very imaginative book, that grabs you from the very first page. I don't think many books are written about reapers, so it is always fun to read one about a topic not covered a lot, especially when it is well done. The pace of the book is perfect. I never felt that the author was dragging out the story or trying to rush me along. There are some nicely developed hidden twists that keep the story interesting. Sadly this book ends on a cliff hanger, but that just means I will pick up the next one when it comes out.
Jo is just a real interesting character. I liked her from the very start, never feeling like she belonged, and I can relate to that. Even though she is confident and cocky, she never comes across as obnoxious! This to me is not easy to achieve since I have seen it many times where it was just too arrogant and I didn't care for the character. Jo keeps me cheering her on. She felt as real as a fictional character can.
I am looking forward to read the next one, hopefully that will be soon! I have received this book from the author for an honest review. (LoP, Lovers of Paranormal)
Having read some of A.D. Trosper’s other works, I expected to enjoy Unveiled before I laid eyes on the first page. I didn’t expect to absolutely love it.
In this tale, Trosper has managed to effortlessly weave together elements of various mythologies and use that setting to bring to life very real and complex characters. Jo (don’t call her Josephine) is a non-typical girl who finds out that all the things she thought about herself and her family weren’t completely on the up and up. Turns out she’s actually a Reaper, one of those charged with leading the souls of the deceased to the river Styx.
However, it turns out that Jo’s only gotten half the story. The truth is even stranger and more dangerous than she could have imagined.
The pacing of the story’s plot is a perfect blend of quick action and slower transitions. As usual, Trosper knows how to tell a story and has perfected her ability to sink her hooks into the reader’s attention and hold it for the duration.
The only negative I can find in this book is that I have to wait for the second book to come out so I can get back to this wonderful story.
I enjoyed reading Unveiled. It was my first time reading Young Adult Fiction, and it pleasantly surprised me.
From the beginning, I felt drawn into the story as Jo ("don't call me Josephine") sits at her mother's deathbed, sees her mother's spirit accompanied by an angel (reaper), and bam! She's always felt different from others while growing up, and now she knows why! She's half-angel, half-mortal. And then... she is drawn into another world, just a little different to ours, as she comes to grips with her heritage. Before long, she is embroiled in something even bigger... all because her angel father couldn't keep it in his pants!
But I won't say any more here. The story did seem slow for a bit, but it soon picked up and left my brain feeling withdrawals every time I put the book down to return to real life. The pace picked up, and I enjoyed it enough to wish I had book 2 with me.
Why are you still reading this review. Close GoodReads, buy the book, and read it now before you miss out!
Thank you to A.D. Trosper for sending me a review copy. I loved it.
This book was creatively written; what starts out as a normal family but a sick mom and her two daughters, turns into a paranormal story with fascinating creatures and characters with special powers. "Given the nature of mortals, I think it is safe to say you would be better off hunted by a demon-born than falling into the hands of mortals who realize you do not age." "There was something vaguely animal in the features and there was no mistaking the fangs. I hadn't imagined those." "Mom was the tether that connected me to the world and without her, I was just drifting on the breeze." I like how the author gave the main female character such strength of character and how she just seems to accept her new destiny and she rolls with the punches. The relationship between her and Caius was filled with tension at times, but they seemed to like each other enough to protect each other. I don't want to spoil the book so I will leave it there.
A delightful tale with all the feels, Unveiled brings you a fascinating mix of angels, demons and old gods topped with a solid measure of snark and fun.
Jo's life is completely turned topsy-turvy the day she looses her mother to cancer. Not only because of the grief caused by her passing, but also because that very moment Jo discovers she is not quite the boring human she believed herself to be. As it turns out, her sperm-donor father was a freaking angel who couldn’t keep it in his pants and slept with a woman he should never have been with. So Jo herself is not quite mortal either, but would one day be a reaper of souls.
Despite her misgivings, when Jo finally realises the whole angel-demon thing is not a joke but the real deal, she decides to accept her new role as reaper. Well, truth be told, the deciding factor may have been the demons trying to make a meal out of herself and her sister, or the hissing demonborn who saved them. And if you'd like to get an idea about what kind of girl Jo is, here is one of her reactions to the whole demon thing:
'Demonborn? Yes, because demons made so much more sense than vampires or monsters. I almost snorted at the absurdity of it. The demonborn hissed like an angry cat. An extremely large, pissed off cat.'
In short, saying that in situations of stress Jo's mouth had a tendency to jump ahead of her brain is the understatement of the year. Jo is snarky, sassy and lays it all out how it is. And she's totally awesome, even more so as a reaper.
When souls start becoming Lost, Jo agrees to try and discover why, even if it means ending up blood bound to a powerful half-demon who is supposed to be a reaper’s sworn enemy - Caius. The catch?! Their bond combined with mix of bloods kicks off a chain of events that neither angels nor demons can turn a blind eye to. And Jo suddenly finds herself with a giant target painted on her back and no one to trust, except perhaps the the demonborn she was bound to.
My heart went out to Jo for all the shite she went through, the pain she needed to shoulder and the sorrow engulfing her soul. That, alongside her determination to do good and live, if nothing else just to spite everyone who wanted her dead had me in her corner from page one. And don't even let me get started on Caius! That is one demonborn you wanna take home ladies! Perfect book-boyfriend material - hissing and snarling including.
And I absolutely adored the way their relationship developed. Starting with Caius holding Jo at arm's length by the scruff of her neck and thinking: "Holding on to her was like holding on to a pissed off badger. A clawless but not toothless badger."
And ending with a downright sigh worthy scene that I won't breathe a word about cause I don't want to spoil. :D Just .... beautiful!
All in all, this first in series is more like a journey of discovery in which we get to know Jo and Caius and get a glimpse at the mystery behind the Lost as well as a promise of way more to come. It is fast-paced and full of feeling and guaranteed to get you hooked on the mystery of the plot as well as the endearing charm between Jo and Caius.
If you love PNR with a good dose of sass and snark topped with a good measure of fun and feeling give this one here a try and you won't be disappointed. It's one of the better mature YA fantasy out there.
This book is an absolute Gem. One that I am so happy and (Lucky) to have discovered.
OMG! Man was this story wonderful. It was completely unlike any other story I have read this summer. I loved the mix of all the supernatural beings such as the reapers (who contain some angle blood) and demonborns (who contain some demon blood). Honestly this book gave me major Supernatural vibes and most of you probably don’t know this about me but I Love Me some Supernatural (the tv show). So this book was utterly wonderful and completely unique and I am so glad I discovered it (and I can’t wait to see what happens in books 2 and 3)!
Josephine (don’t call her that! She hates it! Call her Jo) and her sister Victoria have just lost their mother to breast cancer and while they try to fight their grief in the hospital something truly odd happens. They both could swear that they saw a man, a teenage girl, and their mother’s spirit leave through the hospital door. If they both hadn’t seen it Jo would have thought she was losing it. Later, this strange man arrives and tries to convince them that they are half angel and need to leave with him before they are discovered. Now both girls know he has lost it. But soon they will find that they are in fact being hunted and the only thing that saves them is this man—Rowen— and his acquaintance showing up and fighting their way to save the sisters and whisk them away to the Midtween. Once they are their the sisters learn that they truly are half angel and they have been hidden by their mother. Their mother’s untimely death has revealed them and they are no longer safe in the mortal world. Victoria is chosen to become a guardian (think guardian angel) and Jo is becoming a reaper (one who collects souls and takes them to the ferryman at the river styks). A year goes by and something strange begins to happen. Someone begins stealing souls and the river Styks is being flooded with souls that are unable to cross. For reasons not quite known to Jo, she and a demonborn named Caeis will be the ones to search out who is stealing the souls and to stop them. And what follows is a book about finding yourself, found family, trust, love, and sacrifice for the good of all.
My favorite character you may ask??? This is such a hard decision (and a problem I don’t normally have). So I am going to pick 3! That’s right, I said it, 3! First, I adored Jo. I related to her on so many levels. I related to the fact that she never felt like she really ever fit in. I have quite frequently had those feelings too. She was strong willed and stubborn and I enjoyed how she always stood up for herself (even against a demonborn)! 2nd, I also loved Caius. He was the complete opposite of what you think of when you think of a being being half demon. He was sweet, caring, strong, and he put up with all Jo’s snarkyness and attitude. Finally, I just loved James. He was the best friend you always wanted, NO ALWAYS NEEDED, in your life. He was a complete GEM of a person in the flesh.
If you enjoy a good dose of the supernatural, a plethora of other worldly beings, a well written slow burn romance, an interesting and unique conflict that left me unable to put it down, and an amazing array of characters you just have to read Unveiled by A.D. Trosper. These aren’t your average angels and demons and they are completely awesome.
When Josephine's mother dies, both her and her sister Victoria start to see people no one else can. And they have barely gotten her into her grave before they are attacked by demons. Now she is forced to move into a realm she didn't even know she existed since her absent father turns out to be an angel. They are also given jobs since they are half angel. Jo becomes a reaper and guides souls to Charon. But when too many of those souls start becoming "lost", Jo finds out she is the only one from the angel's side who can take on the task of figuring out what happened. She is paired up with Caius, a demonborn, who has helped her guide, Rowen, in the past. Together they must find not only a weapon, but parts of a riddle that will tell them how to use the magical dagger as well. Jo is an average young woman, except that she has never quite fit in. While her sister makes friends easily, people tend to just look past her, as they did with her mother. Now that she is in Midtween with the other Reapers and Guardians (those with angel blood), she has finally found somewhere she belongs and can be herself. She is finally getting a somewhat normal experience. She does tend to be stubborn and depending on the situation that's not always a good trait. Caius is hard to get a read on. His moods change, but he seems to have more morals than your average demonborn. I feel like there was a lot left of his story to figure out, esp how he came to be allied with Rowen and why he helps him. This book went back and forth on keeping my interest. Right out of the gate, I was interested and loved the concept. But there were a few times where it stalled out a little. I would have loved more about her learning to be a reaper and really getting to see the bonds of friendship forged. It seemed as if one minute she's transported into Midtween and then suddenly it's a year later. But there definitely was plenty to keep my interest throughout the rest of the book. The danger of going looking for the dagger, the questions surrounding her heritage and who to trust, what is going to happen now that people are finding out about her. There are still lots of questions that I want the answer to and will hopefully find them out in the future.
This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:
It's a book that takes elements from different religious systems and mixes them together to create a fantastic, gripping, fast-paced story full of action and emotions:)
It starts a bit slow, with Jo's mother dying of cancer - and that's where we get the first glimpse of the world Jo is going to live in: she sees the Reapers who have come to help her mother cross the River, something she shouldn't be able to do at all - if she's human. A few moments later, in the next chapter, we witness the first battle between Reapers and demons, and Jo and her sister are suddenly grabbed from their home and thrown into the world of the supernatural - and from then on it's almost non-stop action, with the mystery behind Jo's origins and reasons why she's so special unveiled here and there almost unwillingly... which is a great way to propel the reader/listener to go on as we just die to find out why everyone is so secretive about her - and why almost everyone wants to kill her.
As I said, the book is really fast-paced, but there's also space for a full range of emotions, from anger through friendship to love... All the characters are strong personalities, with their agendas, their pasts (also quite mysterious in most cases), and there are a lot of secrets for us to discover on the way to the final chapter - which is a cliffhanger, unfortunately... :) But as the book has a kind of semi-closure, I will not reduce the star-rating for it (this time:)).
Narration by Ms Fortin is great - emotions are clear and convincigly conveyed, differentiation of voices good and enough acting added to carry us on with the story. Mr Johnson does not have much to read as Caius, but the short sentences he does read in a way convey the demon's personality, too, so I like it a lot.
DISCLAIMER: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
With the death of her mother, Jo learns that her mother was keeping secrets from her and her sister, like the fact their "sperm-donor' was an Angel. finding out she wasnt mortal was the least of her problems, she now has to train to be a reaper. Becoming a reaper brings with it the danger of demons but none more dangerous than a half demon she finds herself blood bound to when she is tasked with finding out why so many souls are becoming lost. So why does it feel like the enemy is the only one she can trust? ✨️ Angels and Demons and Reapers with zero religious tones. ✨️ Really cool tie-ins with Greek mythology ✨️ Enemies to lovers slow burn ✨️ Intriguing magical and fantastic world and culture building ✨️ Supernatural and other-worldly creatures This was a great read and i sped through it so easily. I was hooked from the beginning with the mystery of who Jo is and the secrets about herself she doesnt yet know. i found the whole storyline engaging and loved the characters and how they each added something unique to the story. the mystery with the lost souls caught my interest in particular and the with all the twists and lies and secrets it felt like there was a lot more in the book than there actually was. I really loved the enemies to lovers slow burn that has started and look forward to seeing how it goes in the next book. i feel like they complement each other well and i love a guy that falls first. i really want to know a whole lot more of their backstories and im hoping we get a deeper look in book 2. It felt like i flew through this book and honestly i really did, i read it all in one day and wanted to immediately pick up the next book, not because it had a cliffhanger and i needed to, but because i really wanted to see what happens next.
What a pleasant surprise this book was 💜💜💜💜💜. It was on my TBL for some time now 😣 but I am glad I got to it🥰🥰🥰🥰.
We follow Jo as she discovers her heritage, new world, now family and... enemies. She is a mixed child that should not be and is therefore hinted by those who want to erase her existence. She finds an unexpected ally into one of the most powerful demonborn, Caius. Together, they are sent into a mission and are magically bonded so as to have more chances at completing their task. And who says bond, say feelings that only complicate things. I really enjoyed this story because I usually look for the romance development in my reads and everything is supposed to help it grow. Yet in this book, I found myself entertained by the plot itself and the evolution of Jo’s character. When I saw the two narrators, I was expecting a classic dual pov but I loved that Caius only appears at the end of each chapter. He has very few and yet powerful lines each time. You see the story develops through his lenses. You see his feelings morph into something more romantic and I loved it!
I also love the world building and how it was presented. It felt like being on a guided tour. I love the didactic aspect of it but I wish it was peppered through the story.
And what is not to love about the diverse cast and the easy banter between the “Children” !! James is a favorite of mine and I will dispute a place in his heart to Jo 🙂 I can’t wait to jump into book 2 and hopefully book 3 to know what will happen to Jo and Caius!
Jo has always believed she was an ordinary mortal living an unremarkable life. However, everything changes when her mother unexpectedly passes away. In the wake of this tragedy, a shocking new reality unfolds as demons and reapers reveal themselves to Jo and her sister, whisking them away to a mysterious realm beyond the Veil. It is within this enigmatic world that Jo discovers her true heritage, uncovering secrets that challenge everything she thought she knew about herself and her family.
As she grapples with her newfound identity, Jo encounters a compelling demon named Caius. With his stoic demeanor, protective instincts, and an aura of mystery that surrounds him, Caius becomes both an intriguing ally and a formidable presence in Jo's life.
This novel is an absolute must-read for anyone who loves fantasy. The author expertly crafts a unique and richly detailed world, filled with breathtaking scenes and vivid descriptions that immerse the reader in the story. Jo’s fiery spirit and stubborn determination make her a relatable and engaging protagonist, and her interactions with her reaper friends add depth and camaraderie to her journey.
One of the standout features of the book is the short lines at the end of each chapter, formatted from Caius's point of view. These snippets provide insight into his character and deepen the reader's understanding of the complex dynamics between Jo and Caius. They are brilliantly written and add an extra layer of intrigue to the narrative—definitely a highlight for me!
Unveiled is an unusual and interesting read that straddles somewhere between YA and New Adult. It's well written, with engaging and endearing characters and a snark throughout that I always enjoy in my books. It deals with some fairly heavy topics, but does so in a way that never feels overwhelming and manages to keep a decent narrative hook going throughout.
Jo finds herself in an unexpected situation after her mother passes away from cancer. Faced with some startling new information about her heritage, she discovers that staying in the human world is going to be fraught with more dangers than she is capable of handling. Joining the Reapers, those whose task it is to shepherd souls from life to death isn't exactly how she'd anticipated her life going though. But her and her sister are left with very little choice and Jo soon finds her feet in this new world of Angels and Demons. Of course, nothing is ever simple and a quest lands in her lap. One that will pair her with a very unlikely demon.
This was well done. It's well written, thought provoking and powerful at times and funny at others. The characters all come to life on the page, particularly Jo and her demon sidekick. The pacing did feel a tad weird at points, possibly because there's a lot of jumping forward in time so you don't get to see the training and the development that takes Jo from average human to trainee Reaper and beyond. I can't help but feel that instead of skipping forward six months, this would have been better showcasing the development and relationships during that time, even if it's only a chapters worth or so.
All in all though, I enjoyed this and the second one has gone on my watch list. It probably isn't something I'd have picked up on my own, but it caught me and I'm certainly intrigued as to where it's going next. The romance angle admittedly didn't do a lot for me, but they rarely do. The narrative plot at the heart of it has piqued my interest though.
All the feels for this one! From the gut-wrenching beginning, I followed Jo on her journey into a realm of reapers, angels, & demon-born, as she finds her way in the aftermath of losing her mom to cancer. Introverted, with a snarky, filterless mouth, Jo has always been on the sidelines, night to her sister's day. But after discovering she's a reaper with questionable heritage, she starts making friends for the first time in her life. Suddenly they discover souls going missing, the "Lost", and the numbers are growing at an alarming rate. Jo's given a top-secret assignment to find who's behind it, and is paired with an aggravating demon-born, Caius, who makes her insane with his arrogant ways, nevermind how startlingly handsome he is. They slowly bond on their given quest, risking life & limb for something they find may do more harm, than good. Once her secret is revealed to all, she has to decide if saving the Lost is worth losing all she's gained. You're left with her mind made up, and a new journey begun... & needing to read the next one, because the excerpt of book two is quite tantalizing!!
The narrators did a great job of covering all the emotions, though it's different how Trosper throws in a just a thought from Cauis' at the end of each chapter in a male voice, it kinda makes sense, but I wanted more of his thoughts.
I received an ALC copy of this from an author, publisher, or publicist, and chose to leave an honest review.

This has been sitting on my TBR pile since last year, and yes I'm kicking myself that I didn't get to it sooner because it's just fantastic. Now I actually have two versions of this, the original and the special edition omibus version and I was trying to decide what one to read and came up with a compromise. I'd listen to the original on audio with a short review, then in a few weeks read the special edition and do a longer review as I can then compare the two versions.
I have to say I absolutely loved the audio book, as the two narrators Suzanne T. Fortin as Jo and Zachary Johnson as Caius really drew me into the story, it's fast paced with lots of action and teases a slow burn romance that I can't wait to see come to fruition. Add to that, twists and turns, lies and deceit and you've got one hell of a book.
I already love both the leads, there's Jo feisty, stubborn and sarcastic who's clearly grieving after the death of her mother. Finds her life turned upside down with the discovery that her father was a fallen angel and dragged into a world she had no idea existed to be a reaper. And Caius, a demonborn thrust into a quest with his enemy that he has to keep alive due to a partial blood bond, but can't seem to stop himself from admiring her bravery and stubbornness to keep going.
Yep I'm definitely hooked and can't wait to read more. Totally loved it. Highly recommend 😁
Loved this unusual story of demons, angels and reapers. When Jo and Victoria’s mother dies of cancer, the girls are trust into a world they didn’t know existed and the truth of their individual heritage is unearthed. As Victoria settles into her new life, Jo’s becomes increasingly complicated. As secrets are revealed, the dangers and problems grow, and when she is assigned a clandestine mission with a Demon-born, Jo’s life is turned upside down once again. This is a fast paced story with surprises at every turn. I loved the author refreshing take on demons and angles and especially how nothing is black and white with them. Jo is a character you easily become attached to, she is strong, snarky and capable, and the slow revealing of who she is and what abilities she has is great. Cauis is a complex hunk of a character that you can not help but fall for, who would have guessed that a demon could be so appealing! The duel narrators did an excellent job of giving the characters individual voices and making you feel all the emotions and tension in the story. I loved the one sentence commentary by Cauis at the end of the chapters and the deep sexy voice Zackary Johnson uses for him makes your toes curl and leaves you wanting more. This is a great story and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Funny thing is he may be the only one I can trust Part Angel, Part Human, but what they didn't tell her she is also part Morrigan one of the purest and now that Caius has given her blood to help save her, part Demon. She has a target on her back just for being born, what could make things any worse, perhaps falling in love with said demon, a death sentence for them both. But Caius has his own secret origin hidden away as well. I found this to be a interesting read mixing mythology, religion, and fantasy, I am hooked enough to see where it leads.
