Being a forty-something, newly divorced single mom comes with its challenges. Finding out I'm a witch is just another one of them. As a new practitioner of tru-craft, I've been told that every witch is called to a single element, and they are sent down one of two the Fade or the Bright.
Of course, every rule has an exception, and in this case, it's me.
My grimoire has revealed a new element I have to learn, and I am walking the ditch between the two paths. I'm going to need the help of a grouchy gnome, a cuddly imp, a fiery ifrit, and a hottie druid to keep me from burning down my life and everything around it.
My new reality is nature's cruel midlife trick. Surviving Earth magic without blowing up my entire world has been hard enough. If I don't master Fire, I'll go down in flames.
About Renee: USA Today Bestselling author Renee George writes paranormal mysteries and romances because she loves all things whodunit, Otherworldly, and weird. Also, she wishes her pittie, the adorable Kona Princess Warrior, and her beagle, Josie the Incontinent Princess, could talk. Or at least be more like Scooby-Doo and help her unmask villains at the haunted house up the street.
When she’s not writing about mystery-solving werecougars or the adventures of a hapless psychic living among shapeshifters, she is preyed upon by stray kittens who end up living in her house because she can't say no to those sweet, furry faces. (Someone stop telling them where she lives!)
She resides in Mid-Missouri with her family and spends her non-writing time doing really cool stuff...like watching TV and cleaning up dog poop.

Spell on Fire by Renee George Grimoires of a Middle-aged Witch series #2. Paranormal women’s fiction. Best read in series order. Iris Everlee’s life changed after divorcing and buying some ld books at an estate sale. Turns out she’s a witch, with tru-craft powers. Most witches have only one element and Iris learned how to use her Earth magic with a few hiccups along the way. Now it seems like Fire magic is about to turn her life upside down. Again. Zev, a fire djinn knocks on Iris’s door, telling her that he’s there to help her. With Keir’s approval, Iris begins to learn about her second element, although not without a few disasters along the way. With the help of Keir, a Druid, and Zev, as well as her familiar, Bob the cat, and the talking gnome Linda as advisor, Iris may just survive this new fir thing. Maybe. No, no. She’s got this!
2nd book pretty much changes her life again. Fire has some advantages after all. Iris is collecting helpers and support around her. Fascinating adventure as Iris learns to handle two different elements around her erratic new life. While it was a year for me between book 1 and 2, the hook at the end of this book has convinced me, book 3 has to be soon.
I am not the target audience for this, according to the subtitle : A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel
In book one, Iris (our forty-something, newly divorced mother of a teenage son) discovers that she is a witch. Not just a witch, but a WITCH OF ENORMOUS POWER. Just a little psychic upset and her “earth-powers” are unleashed to crack a community swimming pool blocks away. With the help of a dedicated druid (and by this time a love-interest) and a imp in the form of the cutest cat in the world and a talking garden gnome, she must help save the world (or at least her corner of Arkansas).
In this book, which could/should have been the rest of Witch Book 1, she must take hold of her power of fire before she and her community are destroyed. We are treated to a lot of snappy dialogue and the comical interactions of family and friends who also have to change the way they have considered Iris.
"“What do you want then?” “I am here for you.” “Well, I don’t recall ordering Tall, Dark, and Sketchy from Amazon,” I said. “So return to sender.”" "Zev cracked a smile. “I’m a fire djinn. The summoned monster in Final Fantasy is like me, not the other way around. And frankly, the makers of the video game got a lot wrong.” He crossed his arms over his chest again, reminding me of the genie from Aladdin. “Do you grant wishes?” I asked. He bared his teeth in a smile that made me blanch. “Do you want me to grant your wishes?” Keir put his hand on my arm. “Best not to make any djinn wishes. Especially with an ifrit. They will always find a way to take more than they give.”
We paged through this book at high speed to find out whether Zev was actually going to be of help to Iris and whether he and Kier (the druid) would play nice together. The monsters were enough to hold my attention and it is interesting to see how the author is building her contemporary Earth (but with magic and monsters). If you are looking for a paranormal vacation read, this could qualify.
She's found a surprise that few witches have--if she could just figure out how to control it. She's got some help but can they manage in time? She's got enemies too and one is indescribable. She's not the only one in danger...The magical team set to help her is unique, funny, fuzzy, and hot, which can mean different things and in this case, it does.
Newly divorced, a son on the way to college, and new abilities make for a lot. Will she and her team win, live to save the others in danger? There are plenty of twists and discoveries. Never a dull moment. With all of that does she have time for finding love?
Iris has finally gotten a handle on her Earth magic even if it did take almost dying now the grimoire says she has Fire magic. This has other parties interested for different reasons. It isn’t common for a witch to have more than one type of magic and there are those who are very interested in Iris’s new gift which they want for their own. This fast-paced adventure introduces us to some new characters and we learn new things about those we met in Earth Spells are Easy (Grimoires of a Middle-aged Witch Book 1). This is a grab you by the shirt and make you read book once you start you won’t be able to put it down till the very end. I can’t wait for the next story.
I really liked this one, I love the characters and world building. It's a great second book. It's hilarious with a little heat. It's a little shorter than I expected.
This new life of Iris’s is never boring. Not only does she have earth elemental magic but it seems she also has fire elemental magic. With this new magic comes a grouchy ifrit named Zev. The earth magic is protecting Iris from the fire magic which is making it difficult for her to get a handle on this new power. Her body responds in very interesting ways when fire is involved. Iris will need to use all her wits to get out of this one. Another fun read.
"Spell on Fire" is book two of the "Grimoires of a Middle-Aged Witch" series by Renee George. It is an excellent continuation of this series. I enjoy reading about Iris getting new powers and learning how to use them. I absolutely love these characters and how Renee adds just enough humor to keep you laughing. Iris will do anything she can to protect those that she loves. My favorite part of this book is when Iris and Michael are talking. Can't wait to see what happens next.
Iris and gang are back and trying to get her fire spark going...in the meantime Iris and Keir are coming together but holding off until the fire spark is handled. A fire god has taken notice and has decided he wants her powers... the fight and count down are on! Iris is trying to learn as much as possible and in the mean time the Iron Grove has sent Zev to see if Iris truley has the fire within her. His into to the group is not exactly the smoothest but he's here to stay after he tests Iris, he's intrigued by the results. When Iris's fire craft does ignite boy howdy does it get attention! The gang gets moving and things move along quickly but in the end Iris wins and gets somewhat control of her ignis craft. She decides it time to tell the family... Marigold gets it first and is flabbergasted, next she decides it's time to tell her son, she's afraid of dying and him being blindsided like she was. Things go pretty good to say the least. Only as she opens the grimoire to show Michael another sign makes it's appearance! Holy moly Iris is in for another mystery! Awesome story, am loving this series!!! I received this book as an ARC in exchan
10 Stars for this one! All I can say is WOW! A great example of an edge of your seat paranormal that has you turning pages to the very end. The characters are well written. I love Iris who has just learned in this book to control her Earth magic but there's more...could she have another magic anomaly? Could she also have the gift of Fire as well. Seems according to her Grimoir she does. But it doesn't show. And it has been many centuries that a witch has had more than one element of magic. Kier her boyfriend and major protector is surprised when Zev shows up to check if Iris has fire magic too. From here, I don't want to spoil the rest of the exciting happenings including new information about her family and especially about her son Michael. There is so much more. Or the fact that the Fire God and his minions that comes after her for her powers. Like I began...All I can say is Wow! I love this series so far and I can't wait to see what happens next with being left with a cliff hanging clue. I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Spell on Fire has the same type of quirky, humorous writing as the first book in the Grimoires of a Middle-aged Witch series. I can fully appreciate the older character that's sure of herself and how she's finding her strength and independence after a rough divorce. I think it would be nice if she did this without focusing so much on the love interest, but I know some people will enjoy that part of the story.
I rated this book a little lower than the last one because there was a lot of recapping about what had happened in the previous book. I felt like it could be important to give readers a quick reminder about some of the major details, but overall I felt like it wasn't necessary to so much backstory provided. As with the previous book, this one ended in a way that let readers know that the series will continue (my library doesn't have the 3rd book as audio, so I'm not sure if I'll read the print version or not).
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Just when Iris has gotten her tru-craft/Earth magic under control, she discovers she also has fire magic as well. It's practically unheard of for a witch to work with two elements and before Iris can do anything with her new element, she learns there are creatures after her and her magic. Will she be able to gain control of her fire magic in a timely manner? After all, it took her almost dying to gain control of her Earth magic. She's gonna need the help of old friend and new to face what's coming for her.
Fun, fast-paced and well-written with wonderful characters, this story has it all. It kept me on the edge of my seat, flipping pages as quickly as possible just to see what happened next. I can't wait for the next book.
Many thanks to the author and BookFunnel for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.
It seems that Iris is getting it together with her magic with Linda and Keir's help. She finds out there is a new element she will have to learn to tame and control as a tru-craft and she is not handling it well but it is part of her future whether she likes it or not. Her sis Marigold is about to become involved when a stranger comes to the door but Bob interferes and Marigold tries to be a hero. Zev is family to Keir and Lou but has come at the request of The Iron Grove to check out Iris she doesn't take it well. I love the storyline and the characters are very entertaining. Drama,, suspense, mystery, violence, lots of witchcraft, and love. I read an ARC via Author without obligation. I volunteered an honest review.
Loved, loved, loved this book! Hard to put down, wonderful characters in a well-written plot that will capture you and keep you spellbound (pun intended) until you get to the end. Never a spoiler in my reviews, here's what you need to know: I've never read a book by this author that I didn't love or that didn't have me looking forward to the next in the series! This book is no exception. This book will appeal to all ages (although the protagonist has a few more years on her than the average "star of the show") and all paranormal/witch story lovers who also LOVE stories infused with humor and suspense...stop reading this and just simply get this book. I loved it, you will too, I highly recommend it!
Just when Iris is gaining control of her earth magic, she finds out she also has fire magic. Before she has a chance to master this new a craft a powerful enemy arises threatening not only her but the lives of her family and community. Luckily Iris has some powerful allies. Her bond with Keir is growing stronger as their relationship develops. Linda continues to provide guidance (with a bit of pain) and Iris’s imp cat Bob is always there to provide comfort. I highly recommend this book and series to anyone who enjoys paranormal women’s fiction and light urban fantasy.
I listened to the audiobook. The narrator’s voice is easy to listen to and she does a good job differentiating the voices. I recommend this version.
Things heat up in the second Middle Aged Grimoire book starts with Iris - who discovered sue was a witch with elemental magic in book one - facing a threat in her Mountain village as an ancient volcanic deity wants to eat her. The king of the volcano creatures thinks he can save his people by offering Iris up on a platter. As well as imp Bob, bearded-gnome Linda and hunky druid Keir, the gang is joined by Zev the ifrit. Iris faces different monsters and starts to burn things by accident. It's a nice continuation of book one, the ifrit is a nice addition and Iris handles everything with attitude and Snark. It's great fun.
Another midlife witch adventure- and things get literally hot.
Iris suddenly has gained Fire as a second element. Powerful paranormal fire figures are drawn to Iris and her intense new power
will she or her family become the next sacrifices to the power of fire?
is love made stronger or does it go up in flames?
her family has yet to be told. an adoptive family is held together by love, trust, and shared experiences. so what happens when big secrets are withheld, them shared?
hot troubles, hot family connections, really hot and complicated romance connections!
Iris's adventures are not stopping. New situations, new magic and new dangers threatened her life now that she was beginning to control her powers. Interesting how every time she discovers more secrets that endanger her new life. I am intrigued by the druid and his strange creature and with an unusual family, Iris's life is full of surprises. But will Iris be sufficiently protected by her warriors, the funny and skilled gnome, her cute familiar and her new ally? Interesting and entertaining story with action, suspense, amusing scenes, family drama, magic, fights, romance and passion.
Just when Iris thought she had a handle on things, everything fired up. Her life, her town, the bad guys, the new hottie that is charming her sister. Bob and Linda take on more active supporting roles. Linda is like that best friend that is just too brutally honest. Bob is just a lover. I enjoyed the story and how Iris learned to deal with everything that was going on. This was a fun read that had heat and action.
This is the second in the series but can be read as a standalone. However, you’re going to want to read the first and like me will be anticipating the third.
That is, probably, one of the biggest compliments I can make a book and its author: it was over too soon!
I would’ve taken more of Iris Everlee’s adventures, of wanting to cuddle with Bob the imp (I’ll settle for my own purring friend instead), of swooning over Keir (ahem! a lot!), of laughing at Linda’s gnomic antics.
If the first book was great, the second was even better, and I can’t wait for the third!
I do really appreciate the different elements you will find in the latest from this author. It isn't just another paranormal but also has humor riddled throughout. I was that single mom so this also was relatable. The fun part also is seeing what Iris now has to master next. Of course that makes her different than most also. Oh joy also her teenage son learns what his mother can do. Turn the pages to be delighted all this gem contains.
Were on a another epic adventure with Iris. As she try to learn how to control this new element she's gain. Add in the action, intrigue, and of course the steamy encounter to keep you hooked from beginning to end and you have a helluva read. Can't wait to see what else is in store for this series. As always my reviews are totally voluntarily and no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are completely my own.
Spell on Fire is the second book in the Grimoires of a Middle-Aged Witch by Renee George
Spell on Fire is fast-paced and exciting, and the ending is perfect. I love the humor and all of the movie/music references throughout the series. The characters are interesting and it was great to get to know them all a bit more from the first book. I love the writing style, it’s sarcastic and easy to read.
Book 2 in the series is highly entertaining as Iris tries to master her fire magic. She tends to accidentally catch things on fire when she gets emotional, but is not very good at focusing the magic where she actually wants it to go. When a fire god comes to the mountain to try to steal her magic, everyone she loves is put in jeopardy. Can she figure her stuff out in time to save herself and the ones she loves, or is she doomed to be a Scooby snack for a fire monster?
Volume 2 picks up only a couple of months after the end of volume 1. Iris the middle aged witch has been trying to learn fire craft without results. Then a thermal event underground their town in the Ozarks in Arkansas alerts Keer, Louise, Linda to the dangerous forces heading towards Iris. Bob, the imp in the body of a cat with a bobbed tail, is the only soothing entity in a world that’s suddenly too hot to handle.
Another hit for Renee George!! Y’all this book was fire! A great story that will keep you spellbound. Iris and Keir are on fire in this story. If you have not guessed yet, this is about Iris trying to master her tru-craft in fir with some mishaps in the mix. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next saga.
I loved this book by Renee George. Iris found out she has earth and fire magic. She has to learn to control the fire magic as she has magical beings after her. Marigold learns her secret and a God wants to use her. Will she be able to save all her loved ones?
I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title. (Audible Membership)
OK, our middle-aged witch has found one elemental magic and has mastered it, but the book has other ideas. Ideas that may not only fry our witch, but the whole mountain town in which she lived.
Our new found witch has a new power she can’t quite control. Watch the amusing antics she’ll get into as she figures things out. Grimoiries do not stand a chance.
A charming paranormal read in book two of the series.
This story was cool. My favorite part was the last chapter of revelations and setting up what the next book may be about. I can't wait for the next adventure this characters go on. Such a good series!
