I had a perfect life. School teacher. Married to my high school sweetheart. Little starter house that we called charming but was really just old. All I needed was the two-point-five kids and I’d be living my dream. Then my husband died.
After the funeral, I had a breakdown that lasted for a month…or twelve. But now I’m reemerging, healing, and finding my way. It’s time to learn who I am, and whether or not I can fix a leaky sink. And by my side the entire time is my husband’s best friend Liam Barron. The single dad knows a thing or two about personal struggles, and about how to replace faucets.
With Liam, I feel alive again. Confident. Capable. Liam has become my best friend too. Except if my parents, my in-laws, and the rest of the town had any say, I’d stay far away from the former bad boy. How do I tell them what’s so hard to admit to myself? That I’m starting to look at him like he’s more than a friend. That the heat in his eyes when he looks at me is also far beyond friendly. That like it or not, I’m ready to move on, and I want to do it with him.
Marie Johnston is an award-winning, best-selling paranormal and contemporary romance writer. She grew up in the upper Midwest and planned to go to college for English. Didn't happen. She started college in accounting and was awful! Grabbing her inner science geek by the pocket protector, she changed to microbiology and medical technology where her only writing involved scientific articles and procedures. Eventually, she left full-time work for full-time baby raising but kept thinking, "one day, I'd like to write a book." Finally, before any more time passed, Marie decided to buckle down and write. She loves it!
After reading about so many rich and/or famous people, I was happy to meet Liam, the blue collar single dad of twins who struggles with money and time. A welder by trade, he’s also an artist, which gave him a little something that I enjoyed. I really liked him.
His story as the illegitimate son of the local royal, and the consecutive bullying he’s subjected to from his father’s family, allowed the author to introduce the Barrons. The clan is huge, rich, and influential. We also get a nuanced opinion about them–while Liam has a less than amicable relationship with most of them, Kennedy, being the widow of one respected member of the family, offers us a gentler view. Great introduction of new characters.
So you have Liam on one side–hard working single dad who’s taking care of the grandmother who raised him–and Kenny on the other. Viewed as weak after a crippling disease during her teenage years, and a deep depression when her husband died, she slowly takes control of her life, including her love life. It really was an interesting character, and watching her change was inspiring.
From long time friends to best friends to lovers, the reader witnesses the evolution of Kenny and Liam’s feelings. It just felt like, for about 10 years, they were just good friends, and without any warning, they fall in love with each other. I admit I had a hard time buying it. But, once I accepted their feelings, they were actually a cute couple. Mostly because they were also friends–intimacy was just a bonus.
There were a lot of repetitions–multiple paragraphs about Kenny’s struggles, about Liam’s situation with his family, with little to no change between them. It bothered me a little.
It was still a good introduction to a new series, with a little tease about the next book that got me excited.
Quickie
- Series: Oil Barrons #1 (can be read as a standalone) - Hashtags: #small town romance #best friend’s wife #single dad #widow #blue collar #family feud - Triggers: bullying, mention of death, grief - Main couple: Kennedy Barron & William Barron - Hotness: 4/5 - Romance: 4/5 - + the slow but steady way Kennedy comes back to life - – they’ve known each other for a long time, but since we’re missing a huge part of their relationship, the change from friends to lovers feels too sudden
I absolutely adored this book. The author doesn’t shy away from grief, the many ways we mourn or the triggers to set a memory in motion at the most in opportune times, the grit of small town living when that small town has one family thinking that they’re gods, or the many power dynamics at play.
Kennedy is trying to break her cycle of mourning, and her best friend Liam is her rock. Except….maybe she looks at him differently. And he definitely looks at her differently. But he’s been in the friend zone for so long that he’s not about to rock the boat, since his love for Kennedy means he’s whatever she needs him to be. But when these two confront their feelings, it sets so many things into motion that could be good, bad, indifferent, or downright ugly. You see, Liam is the relative no one in town wants to give any positive thoughts or feedback to. Not because he’s bad. But because they’ve been trained to never go against the word of the almighty Barron family. So when secrets start to come out, sparks fly all over town and unlikely alliances are formed. Unexpected friendships start and become some of the most precious thing s around. And tempers snap. Things are said. But are they truly meant, or merely heated words that are immediately regretted?
I already adored the King family, so seeing just what the Barron family may offer has me beyond intrigued. Especially Laney’s story. I really hope that’s next. And I REALLY hope she makes the guy grovel. Because I have a feeling another Barron will come rolling into town soon enough.
This book was emotional and well written. Liam was the star of this book. I felt for Kennedy and appreciated the way the author depicted her journey through grief. She let family members run her life for a long time after a childhood illness and then the loss of her husband. I can understand she had to learn to stand up for herself, but it was disheartening the way she wouldn’t stand up for Liam until he walked away. Her grand gesture was too little too late, in my opinion. Liam deserved more.
I did really love Laney’s character and am excited to read book 2.
4 star Review Make Me Whole (Oil Barrons #1) by Marie Johnston AUDIO REVIEW: Having read a number of books by Marie Johnston I was happy to learn that she had a new series, Oil Barrons releasing. This was an emotional story that drew me in and held my attention throughout and this is Kennedy and Liam’s friends to lovers story. After her husband dies she turns to single dad and her husband's best friend Liam for strength and support, despite those around her advising her to keep away from him. However as she slowly comes to terms with her grief and her mourning she begins to have feelings for Liam as he brings light back into her life. It is also obvious that Liam has feelings for her too as they both struggle to come to terms with their feelings. Ms. Johnston handle the subject of grief and mourning well. As secrets are revealed and loyalties tested, Kennedy and Liam will be tested as will those around them. The narrators Lee Daniels and Tyler Darby were both new to me. They did a good job in expressing the emotions and grief that the characters go through. Their voices were pleasing and easy to listen to and they brought the story and the characters to life for me. My emotions were all over the place reading this story, there were times that I was angry , frustrated, moved to tears and my heart just about broke for this couple. Make Me Whole was a well written, heart warming story and I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for this series.
Make Me Whole is a heartbreakingly beautiful, emotional friends to lovers romance, about finding love after loss, healing and beginning again. This is my first time listening to Marie Johnston and it will not be my last. Kennedy and Liam’s story captivated me from the moment I begin listening. There are some tough moments of grief and pain for Kennedy as she finds her footing again after the loss of her husband, Derrick. She is mourning him, but is strong and determined to gain back her life and return to some normalcy and turns to Liam, Derrick’s best friend and cousin. Liam is Kennedy’s rock. His is strong for her, when she cannot be, he is supportive and patient and as she works through her grief. The romance between Kennedy and Liam is slow burn but the pacing and timing was perfect for their journey. There is a forbidden aspect to it, so rushing it would have felt unnatural and unrealistic to their story. Lee Daniels and Tyler Darby’s voices were perfect bringing Kennedy and Liam’s story to life. Their pacing, pitch and tone was perfect. Their storytelling is natural and flowed well. Both Lee and Tyler are new to me narrators and I will be looking out for more stories narrated by this duo in the future.
I really enjoyed this book! The storyline was well developed, the characters were complex and well developed and the story world was detailed. The writing drew me in, and I felt immersed in the story! I always look forward to more books by this author and would recommend this book!
I loved this first instalment in the Oil Barron’s series. It is an emotionally beautiful, friends-to-lovers story. Kennedy is a fragile young widow who after a lengthy grieving period has decided to become independent despite the continual interference of her Mother and her Father-in-Law. Liam is a single Dad and has family issues of his own to deal with as he is an illegitimate Barron. These two overcome a lot of problems on their way to their HEA. The subject of grief and the grieving process was treated with respect by the author and you could feel Kennedy’s pain and determination. I love Liam’s character. He puts everyone’s well being ahead of his own despite his struggles. This story made me want to read more of the Oil Barron series. I received an ARC for an honest review.
(Audio Review) ‘Make Me Whole’ is book 1 in the ‘Oil Barrons’ series and is a standalone. As the synopsis of the book states, this book follows best friends Liam and Kennedy on their journey from grieving friends-to-lovers.
Kennedy having struggled after losing her husband is finally ready to start slowly coming out of that shell and getting active back in society. Liam having helped her throughout the grieving process, as well as, also grieving himself (he was best friends with Kennedy’s husband) is there as a shoulder for her to lean on. Whilst all this is happening, we see their journey turn romantic.
I loved the storyline in this book. Both characters were endearing as well as complex. I loved how we saw Liam being there for Kennedy both as a platonic friend and then later as a romantic partner. Speaking of which, I loved how we saw them being very close friends at first, and then saw how and why their friendship developed into more. Everything about that journey was believable. This book also dealt with some heavier topics including grief, and I loved how it was handled.
I also felt that the pacing of this book was great. Everything seemed to flow well.
Some of the other side characters were very annoying though; most notably her in-laws and Liam’s father (and the people who shun Liam due to his father’s influence), but I suppose that was the author’s intention. So I guess, mission accomplished in that regard.
I listened to this book via audio and enjoyed every moment. Narrated by Lee Daniels and Tyler Darby, it was very easy to listen and get really into the story. Both narrators did a wonderful job. I really felt the emotions with this one, especially due to some of the harder topics explored within this book.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it, especially the audiobook version.
I was provided a free audio copy of this book. However, all opinions shared are my honest thoughts about this book.
Beautifully Gripping & Heartfelt! Excellent Story & Narration🎧
Make Me Whole Oil Barrons, Book 1 By: Marie Johnston Narrated by: Lee Daniels, Tyler Darby
This is a beautiful romance novel and I loved everything about it, from Marie Johnston’s wonderful writing style to the interesting characters and storylines she created to the fabulous narrators who bring it all to life from the pages to your ears. The characters are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with, it is alway easy to fall for the characters and care about them too. Consumed in grief, Kennedy Barron lost a little of herself when her husband, Derek, died and she struggled to find her way. Her parents and Derek’s parents checked in on her, but it was Liam’s help and his show of caring that got her out of her funk. Liam and Derek were best friends, almost like brothers, and he understood Kennedy and what she was going thru and what she needed. Derek is the illegitimate son of one of the most affluent men in Coal Haven and his father, Cameron, has made life as difficult as possible for him, his wife was just as vicious. His mother died when he was a baby and his maternal grandparents took him in, when his grandfather passed away he came home to help his Grandma, Gin. His father does not want him in Coal Haven and made sure there were no jobs for him there or the surrounding towns, so he got a welding job in Williston and split his time between there and Coal Haven. His kids stay with Grandma Gin and Kennedy helps with them when she can. She used to work as a school teacher before Derek passed away she is well enough to go back to work but they already filled her position so she is working as a paraprofessional for now. This is a wonderful friends to lovers romance, some think may it is a forbidden love, a best falling for his friends wife but I think it is something Derek would have wanted, for both his wife and his best friend. I loved how everything played out in this book, it is a beautifully plotted story with the emotions pour off the pages and tug on your heartstrings like no other. It was great to watch Kennedy heal and come into her own, it was also great to see Derek deal with his father and now bow down to him or his antics. Thank you Marie Johnston for this wonderful story and emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧 And for the fabulous narration, Lee Daniels and Tyler Darby are the perfect cast to bring these characters and story to life. They had a complete understanding of the characters they portrayed, giving each a voice is the perfect fit for that character’s persona to a tee, sounding believable and just as I pictured the characters to sound. You could hear how much heart they put into their work as they capture the character’s emotions and project them into their performance. These superbly talented voice artists are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another exceptional listen.

A new series and I am so excited! After listening to the Oil Kings, I was thrilled to see the Barons Family story begin! And what a beginning! Meet Kennedy. Widowed and having a tough time coming to terms with her life, she struggles to start over without her husband Derrick. If his cousin and best friend, Liam was not there for her, life would be so much worse. Liam is a single dad and a welder who can create beautiful pieces of out metal, would do anything for "Kenny". His feelings for her over time have changed and he just hopes that someday she may be ready to date again. But his chaotic life may not be what she wants. Already tied to the Baron's by marriage, Kennedy having a relationship with Liam would not be accepted. But the heart wants what the heart wants. Will these two find their way to happiness? I loved this story for a couple of reasons. First, I love the way Marie Johnston writes. She has a style that is easy to listen to and finds ways to make us feel like we are in the story with the characters. Secondly, this is a refreshing look at these rich families. Liam is an outcast, and has a hard time living in the same town as his family. He is easy to relate to, hardworking, blue collar, and just wants his chance at success and happiness. And lastly, the way Kennedy works her way through grief and looks to find her independence is inspiring. This is a fantastic start to this series and I can't wait to meet the rest of the Barons!
Lee Daniels and Tyler Darby are a wonderful narration team and create this new world with their wonderful story telling. Daniels interpretation of Kennedy is emotional and drives us through so many feelings, it is incredible. Kennedy has many layers and each nuance pulls one off and lets us get to know her better. Darby comes in as the hard working, loving father and it's impossible not to love him. He has a warmth to his voice that is soothing and lets us realize just why Kennedy is falling for the man. They give us a fantastic performance and I can't wait for more.
Marie Johnston is a new-to-me author and I’m excited to continue this series! The story is a sweet, heart-wrenching small-town romance. I loved that the author intertwines the relationships between Liam, Kennedy and Derek. Given that Derek and Liam were best friends and Kennedy and Derek were HS sweethearts, the relationships were fundamentally woven together. Marie wrote the developing feelings between Kennedy & Liam in a lovely way that is respectful of Kennedy and Derek’s marriage and her grief around his death.
I thought this was a genuine, heartwarming book. Kennedy’s character arc is beautiful as she works through suffocating grief, builds her confidence, opens her heart, and falls in love again. Her journey is not about getting over her husband’s death, but learning to live her own life while remembering the past with fondness. Liam’s approach to navigating their new feelings is respectful of his friend’s memory and tenderly mindful of Kennedy’s emotional journey. I got a little tripped up with all the Barron family members and world building in the beginning, but I’m looking forward to more HEAs in The Oil Barrons series! The teaser at the end hooked me for the next book! It’s going to be SO good.
Tyler Darby & Lee Daniels are both new-to-me narrators. I enjoyed their voices; their character voice ranges were great. Lee packed heaps of emotion into her performance of Kennedy as the grieving widow-turned fierce champion of early childhood education. The pacing of the narration was a bit slow for me at the beginning. As the book progressed, the lightening of emotional hardships and family drama in the plot paralleled a shift in narration style and speed. It was a lovely shift to hear.
🎧Audiobook Review 🎧 Great start to a new series! Make Me Whole will set you on an emotional journey of healing and opening your heart again. It’s a friends to lovers romance that follows a young widow trying to pick up the broken pieces of her life after a year of mourning her husband who died suddenly and far to young. And a single dad who has been outcast by a town due to his father and scandal that he is an innocent victim of. He was also best friends/cousin to the man Kennedy our heroin has been grieving for. This is not an easy love story of two people meeting and falling in love. Both have their own pains and baggage. Liam really steps up to help Kennedy start to move forward and that’s when deeper feelings start to develop. There is a lot I enjoyed about this listen. One was that nothing felt glossed over or forced. I loved the friendship of Liam and Kennedy as much as the love between them. I loved that Liam let her set the pace in her process of moving on from her grief. There was such a realistic raw element to it that made me so emotional on a personal level. Sometimes the simplest tasks can seem like climbing mountains when you are grieving someone. Like packing their belongings, or going to a hardware store to fix something that was usually done by the person you lost. And a feeling of victory when you can say one day I’m okay. I also loved that Liam was a hard working single dad who did what needed to be done to care for his boys and grandma. I was also intrigued by other characters in the story that has made me anxiously waiting for the next in the series. The narrators were perfectly cast for these characters. Lee Daniels really brought Kennedy to life in all the layers of emotions she went through. And Tyler Darby is a new to me Narrator I really loved his deep voice that was gentle in all the right places with a bitter edge in others Tyler really gave balance to the voice of Liam and after Listening I could not picture the character being voiced by anyone else. Overall a fantastic listen. I enjoyed these characters, I loved the drama the touch of angst the friendship and love. it’s a story I could listen to again and again. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
**Audio Review** Make Me Whole is a sweet, heart-breaking but feel-good small town romance, about two best friends who find love after a tragedy. This is a journey of discover for Kennedy…..to find herself and stand on her own two feet, after grieving the death of her husband. The author handles the transition from grief to recovery very well. Liam is her closest friend and was her husbands’ best friend. He’s been her rock, supporting her during her grief. So how do these two tip-toe through their attraction that’s blossoming?
I liked the narrators. Both are new to me and I’m glad to discover them. Lee Daniels embodied the uncertain insecurity of Kennedy in the beginning and adapted the strength the character developed as the story progressed. I love Tyler Darby’s narration, embodying that quiet strength which is Liam. He sounds so much like Josh Lucas, who’s dang cute with a sexy voice, so it wasn’t a stretch to envision him as Liam.
The premise of the story intrigued me, yet I wasn’t as engaged in the romance aspect as I wanted to be. This story really dove into Kennedy’s personal development, moving forward after grieving for her husband and becoming independent without the help of her family. She’s learning to rely on herself and Liam supports her while both discovering feelings for each other. So I felt a slight lack of romance in the story for my taste. I wish there was more yearning between the two. Or at least from Liam’s side earlier on, since Kennedy was still trying to come to terms with the idea of possibly dating again. Overall, this is a great beginning of a new series by Marie Johnston.
*Thanks to Home Cooked Books for providing a copy of this ALC. All opinions are my own.
*** AUDIOBOOK REVIEW*** Marie Johnston writes beautiful, tug at your heart, slow burn, steamy romances. This slow burn, friends to lovers romance was the perfect weekend listen. Liam and Kennedy’s story was wonderful. They both have missing pieces in their lives and are struggling to fit in a town who sees Liam as a bad guy and Kennedy as the helpless widow. Liam has been in love with Kennedy since they were in High school and now that she is ready to move on from her husband’s death, Liam is the only man who makes her heart flutter again. They both struggle with their growing attraction and feelings toward each other, especially, since Kennedy was Liam’s best friend’s wife.
I’ve read Marie Johnston’s books before and really enjoyed them, however, on audio it was just as delightful. Lee Daniels and Tyler Darby narrate this story. They are new to me narrators who did a lovely job bringing Liam and Kennedy to life. At first, it hard for me to getting into the narration, but as the story progressed I started to feel the connection between the characters and narrators. Overall, this angsty, melt your heart, slow burn, a bit forbidden friends to lovers romance was a nice change of pace from all the mafia romance I was reading. It made me appreciate the slow growing connection between two characters who have a lot to loose, but along the way find something even better that will complete them in ways they never thought possible. This was the perfect start to the Oil Barrons series, and hope to read/ listen to more. I would definitely recommend this story and any other Marie Johnston book.
Make Me Whole is book one in the Oil Barrons series and is my first Marie Johnston title. This book totally consumed me, I loved the story, the writing style and all the emotions this book managed to draw out of me. But what completely captivated me about Marie’s storytelling was the way she gave us readers a fresh look into rich small-town families. This is the story of Kennedy (Kenny), a woman who lost her husband too soon and has struggled with the transition from doting wife hoping to start a family to grieving widower. This title also shines a spotlight on Liam who, as the illegitimate child of the head of the Barron family was outcast from birth. Liam is a hardworking single Dad and wants nothing more that a shot at happiness and success in the small town he grew up in but was ostracized from, except for his late cousin and best friend Derrick and his wife Kenny. Liam and Kenny grow close while Liam guides Kenny through her loss and grief and Kenny helps with his kids while also being a good friend and confidante. A beautiful, steamy relationship forms between them, however, there are bumps along the way as the Barron family are protective of Kenny and feel Liam is taking advantage of her vulnerability. Lee Daniels and Tyler Darby are new to me narrators and they brought Liam and Kennedy to life in the most beautifully, breath taking performances. These two perfectly complemented each other and will now be on my one-click list going forward. I couldn’t have loved this first glimpse into the Barron family more and I’m waiting with bated breath for Make Me Shiver to take another look into this dysfunctional, rich, small-town family.
Kennedy’s life had been on track until tragedy struck out of the blue taking her husband, Derrick. Overwhelmed with grief, she couldn’t work or take care of herself and her home. With the help of Derrick’s cousin and best friend, Liam, and her in laws she was able to start putting her life back together. Soon the playful, easy friendship she’d had with Liam since before her husband had died began to shift into something more for her.
Liam had a bad reputation with most of the town simply for being born the bastard son of one of its wealthiest oil men. He was shunned by everyone in his father’s family except his cousin Derrick. After Derrick’s sudden death, Liam stepped in to care for Kennedy while trying to keep the deeper feelings he’d had for her since high school hidden.
As they both came to the realization that they were no longer merely friends, Kennedy had to battle lingering guilt for having feelings for another man yet Liam’s patience, acceptance and compassion was so poignant and unwavering. The relationship that grew from their mutual grief and friendship was a beautiful reminder that life is too short not to follow your heart.
This was a slow burn friends to lovers story that’s mostly sweet but Kennedy and Liam’s chemistry simmers throughout before coming to a boil when they finally gave in to the feelings they could no longer deny. Lee Daniels and Tyler Darby gave beautiful performances through the gamut of emotions Marie Johnston took us on in this story. I look forward more books in this series!
This slow burn romance is a sweet story about a woman recovering from loss and trying to find the inner strength to not only keep going, but to come back to life. I found Kennedy to be a very interesting character. After losing her husband she fell apart and her family and friends stepped in to take care of her. Now things have changed and she's struggling to effectively communicate her needs and wants. Kennedy is somewhat naïve when it comes to taking back control in her life but with the help of her late husband's best friend Liam, she begins to realize what is important to her and what is worth fighting for.
I really appreciated how the author handled Kennedy's emotional journey back, especially when it came to falling in love again. Both Kennedy and Liam showed a lot of care and respect for the situation and it was actually discussed instead of just glossed over, which made it feel more realistic. To be honest, I did struggle with the narration for the first bit of the book as I didn't feel one narrator matched the other in pace and energy, but as the story progressed, I noticed a change along with the character leading me to believe this was an intentional choice in the performance, which makes it a more enjoyable experience. I'm very interested in seeing what happens next in the Oil Barrons series. 4/5 story, 3/5 narration
4 star Review Make Me Whole (Oil Barrons #1) by Marie Johnston Having read a number of books by Marie Johnston I was happy to learn that she had a new series, Oil Barrons releasing. My emotions were all over the place reading this story, there were times that I was angry , frustrated, moved to tears and my heart just about broke for this couple. Make Me Whole was a well written, heart warming story and I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for this series.
Rating: (4/5) Spice (3.5/5) Marie Johnston knows how to tug on the heart strings. This is book one of the Oil Barron series. Make Me Whole is about a single dad….swoooon! I just love the trope of single parent because life isn’t easy when you’re doing it together so I can only imagine alone. You are always rooting for them to find someone for them and those darling littles of theirs too. Along with the single parent trope is a widow….and like who doesn’t love a good widow story too?
This is the story of Liam, single dad of two, and Kenny who is a widower. Kenny’s late husband was Liam’s best friend and the three of them grew up together. I mean so many amazing tropes into one story and Marie Johnston wrote it like a boss. It is a beautiful story that will pull at your heart strings.
This book has a lot of raw emotions and a good amount of smut too. I adored this book, the story and Marie Johnston! The story will hold your attention and leave you wanting more. I try to stop in the middle of chapters because I find it easier than the end of a chapter to put down but not this book, I just had a hard time putting it down!
AUDIO REVIEW Marie Johnson is a fairly new author to me but I have read some books in the Oil Barons Series so I was excited when I got the opportunity to listen to Make Me Whole, Book 1 in the series. This is Kennedy and Liam’s emotional, friends to lovers story. When Kennedy loses her husband she turns to his best friend for support but everyone around them seems to be warning her off single dad Liam because he is dealing with his own ghosts. Liam becomes her rock and as she comes to terms with her grief she finds herself wanting to live and love again. Does Liam feel the same and what does the future hold ….guess you need to one click to find that out. The narrators Lee Daniels and Tyler Darby did a wonderful job with all the emotions this couple go through and they really brought the characters and their journey to life. This was an emotional listen but this author handled the loss, the grief and the morning with dignity. This is a beautifully written, emotional romance that will appeal to all romance lovers, it has wonderful characters and it’s a heartwarming story.
This book caught my attention the moment I read the synopsis and I knew I had to read it. It has a different approach to their love story and I loved that.
Kennedy has been mourning the sudden death of her husband for the past year. Determined to get out of the funk she’s been in, she slowly starts rebuilding her life. And the man that’s been by her side as much as possible, Liam, her husband’s best friend. Liam is the outcast of their small town due to the back he was born as the result of his father cheating on his wife with his mother. The two of them share a bond from losing the person they both were the closest to. Their friendship grows and thrives the more they hang out together doing repairs on her house or when they are doing activities with his twin sons. But fate has other ideas when their friendship turns into something more.
I adored Kennedy and Liam’s story so much. It was conventional and unconventional at the same time. It felt so natural for these two to fall for each other despite what a small gossipy town might think. My favorite part was when Kennedy started to regain her confidence and independence again. And I loved that Liam was behind her the whole time, silently in her corner giving her the quiet strength that she needed. With all that he went through as being the “unwanted child”, he was the one person who could understand how and when she needed help.
Lee Daniels and Tyler Darby narrate the audiobook version and I loved listening to them. Lee Daniels did a great job of bringing all of Kennedy’s emotions to life. Her story was tough and Lee Daniels was amazing as her. Tyler Darby was the perfect choice for Liam. His voice is exactly who I would have picked for him.
Book 1 in Johnston's new Oil Barrons series. This is Kennedy and William's story. A beautifully well written and perfectly narrated romance of second chances. Loss and heartbreak and of new beginnings and finding yourself and your strength. Kennedy's story was so heartwarming to listen to and I can't stress enough how well I feel Johnston portrayed her character and the growth, emotions and conflicts she went thru. Same with William / Liam's character - how small towns and family dynamics never seemingly go away. Amazingly written. Dual narration is always a bonus but these two did a great job in bringing these characters to life and not providing distractions from the storyline but smooth flowing. Overall a great read and I am highly looking forward to more in this series and this crazy small town family dynamic!
I received this book for free at my request and I voluntarily provided this review. *this review is based on the audio version of this read
This is the first book in the Oil Barrons series, a Small Town Romance. I like Marie Johnston's writing. Kennedy and Liam's story is beautifully written, very emotional, heartbreaking, and heartwarming afterward. They are both great characters. Kennedy's past is heartbreaking. She is beautiful, strong, and supportive. Liam, a single dad, is handsome, caring, and supportive. His twin sons are cute. The storyline has angst, drama, and some family issues. The supporting characters are interesting. I loved Laney and Liam's grandmother. This is a beautiful slow burn romance, friends to lovers, and second chance at love. Lee Daniels and Tyler Darby did an amazing job with the narration. I enjoyed it. Looking forward for more in the series.
This story takes on a lot of emotional distress. We have a young widow (Kenny) who is barely living. The bare minimum is thanks to he dead husband's BF who also happens to be his (illegitimate) cousin. It's been a few years but with Liam's help she is staring to open up to the idea of living again.
They move at slow pace, things and people in their home town not helping the case but when love gives you a second chance you'd be a fool to let it get past you without a fight.
It took me a few chapters to get into the groove with the topic of losing someone so close but with each page I kept reading it was like I was sucked in and it would not let me put it down until I reached the end. This is book 1 and after reading that epilog I'm more than ready for book 2.

I was hooked on Kennedy and Liam‘s story from the first pages. Kennedy‘s husband passed and she is floundering then his cousin and best friend, Liam it’s always there for her. Liam is the black sheep of the family because of who his influential father is. Not being recognized by him and blacklisted because of his reputation Liam grows into a bad boy. When Kenny starts to live again and grows into her own person she realizes Liam is more than just a friend to her, she has developed feelings for him. I love that Liam as a single dad protected his kids from everything that he went through. Can these two lost souls move forward and have a life together?
What a sweet lovely story! I enjoyed the storyline and characters (both primary and secondary). One of my favorite things about it is how well we get to know both Kennedy and Liam. They each have some past issues and we get to watch them overcome and grow to become better people.
The secondary characters are delightful. There are all ranges from mean and spiteful to silly and kind. I really enjoyed getting to know them all.
I did listen to this on audio. The narrators are new to me and they both did exceptional! They really helped bring this story to life! I throughly enjoyed listening to this book! In fact one of my favorite characters gets her book next. I cant wait!
I felt that this was such an emotional story. I really felt for Kenny/Kennedy as she goes through the grief of losing her husband, and how hard it was to start living again, and wondering if she can feel something for someone else. I also felt for Liam who had such a hard life just because of something that happened that was beyond his control It was so beautiful to see how their relationship changed from friends to lovers as it was sweet and sultry, and so fraught with obstacles that they need to overcome. I cried and giggled through this story and really fell in love with the characters.
I received a free advanced review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my fair and honest opinion.
Make Me Whole by Marie Johnston pulled me in from the very beginning. The story has so many feels and wonderful characters. I felt so sorry for the young widow, Kennedy trying to figure out her feelings for Liam. Small towns can be huge influences on ones choices. The narrators, Lee Daniels and Tyler Darby, both brought the characters to life with their voices. They each added the right emotions to them and I could envision so many details. I loved how the story flowed and felt like I was seeing things through their eyes. Definitely a great beginning to a new series.
Make Me Whole, book 1 in the new Oil Barrons series by Marie Johnston, is a beautiful friends to lovers romance. Set in a small town, Kennedy is trying to move on from her husband's death. His best friend, Liam, is doing his best to take care of her and his twin sons. As they start to realize their attraction for each other, they act on it and realize they can help heal each other.
The narration by Lee Daniels and Tyler Darby are spot on for Kennedy and Liam. Both narrators are new to me, but they were fantastic. Lee Daniels specifically blew me away in moments of grief. I really felt it and it made me feel more connected to the characters and story.
Marie Johnston is also new to me, but I can't wait to see where she takes this series. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a classic romance where despite adversity, love wins.
