DNF @45% (skimmed till the end after that point - because I was curious how it would be wrapped up)

Sticking with it for 45% of the story was me asking for a miracle. It didn’t happen.

This whole story was very very icky and Ravil was the ickiest.

Sorry but I’m not gonna waste my time stating all the reasons why. There’s some good reviews with spoilers that really put it all out there.

I was gonna give this 2 stars but then I asked myself why? I mean, I genuinely didn’t like anything about this, and I don’t feel very nice atm...

3.5 Winning Her Surrender Stars ⭐

When a random hookup at a BDSM club results in an unexpected pregnancy, Lucy chooses to go it alone. Except five months later her baby daddy finds out and he's pissed...

Keeping a secret of this magnitude is going to backfire. Dishonesty is a hard limit for Bratva leader Ravil Baranov. Learning he will be a father brings out a side of him Lucy suspected he had. Almost instantly she is now his prisoner. And her fears a realised.

This is a game of chess we are playing. It could be pleasurable for both of us, even though one of us, me, will always win.

She can do this the easy way or the hard way. Either way Ravil wants to be very much part of his unborn childs life. This means he will make Lucy fall in line. Her body is willing, and that's enough for now.

I close my eyes and let myself succumb to the pleasure of being inside her, how incredibly juicy and snug the fit is, how forbidden it feels with her hating me, here as my prisoner. How right.

The Director was entertaining, a little generic and light on the Mafia drama. Admittedly I did enjoy the seriously delicious pregnancy sex and a dash of love smacks from our alpha Russian. You can take the role as 'prisoner' lightly since this mobster had it bad. It was more a play at proving that she was his.

Lawyer Lucy and Russian mobster Ravil first met in Black Light: Roulette War. During their sex play, the condom broke; unbeknownst to Ravil, Lucy did not take a morning-after pill and, instead, decided to have the child she'd always dreamed of. Months later, Ravil accidentally (and jaw-droppingly coincidentally) reunites with Lucy when he hires her to defend one of his men. Taking one look at her swollen belly, he deduces the baby is his and kidnaps her to ensure his part in the child's life. The rest of the book attempts to reconcile the seemingly irreconcilable: can two people on opposite sides of the law make any of this work? Side Note #1: This seems to be the first Black Light spin-off not released by that series' publishers. Side Note #2: The title is incredibly misleading since before I knew what the plot was about, I thought it referred to movie director and what it actually means within this world is pretty vague.

I'm going to begin by saying that with this central premise Ms. Rose writes herself into an incredibly incoherent and deeply unpleasant corner that she cannot get out of -- though she tries, valiantly. Because what bothers me won't bother many (though a couple of reviews here and on Amazon echo my own concerns), let me first say that if you're looking for a light romantic BDSM book where the H is laser-focused on the h and the two experience some organic tension, you may enjoy this. There isn't a whole of action (either sexual or otherwise), but given the MFC's state, there really can't be. This ending is really more an HFN and many lines of action are left open; since it's the start of a series, it's possible that some of them will be addressed in subsequent books. I will say that I object to Ms. Rose's marketing ploy here: she tells us that if we sign up for her newsletter, we'll get this book's epilogue (which it badly needs). Personally, I believe that if someone spends their hard-earned money on a book, they're entitled to the full story, but there you go.

TL:DR

I couldn't, however, enjoy this book for four reasons. First of all, kidnapping a woman will, you know, cause her stress; I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure that's the last thing you want someone pregnant to undergo. If that weren't bad enough, Ravil threatens her umpteen times during the first half of the book with A) Taking her to Russia (and the book never explains exactly how he can do this); B) Taking the baby away from her after he's born; and C) Depriving her of seeing her family and friends. Ms. Rose tries to make this palatable by giving us Ravil's side (he's rightfully angry that she's kept his paternity secret from him) and his . But it's only the magic of fiction that prevents this physical and emotional stress from affecting Lucy and I just couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to buy a woman's attraction to a man who threatens to take away her child. To Ms. Rose's credit, she does admit how problematic this narrative is in her disclaimer, but the fantasy element wasn't enough for me.

Secondly, the book creates a false equivalency between Ravil's bratva status and actual prejudice. I laughed out loud at this: "I essentially racially profiled him." Last time I looked, being a criminal isn't a protected category (though I fully support innocent until proven guilty, public defenders, and the rights of those released from prison). While I agree with other reviewers that Lucy, her parents, and her law firm's reasoning for taking on known criminal clients rings hollow (and is better suited to a public defender, not those making loads of money off of said defenses), Lucy's concern for how Ravil's profession might affect their child is completely legitimate and one the book never fully addresses. (In many of these books the criminals are somehow not really criminal and I'm just "really?" Ravil does admit killing people.)

Thirdly, I agree with another reviewer's objection to the narrative's regressive attitude towards working mothers. Look around you, Ms. Rose: I'm pretty sure if you try hard enough you'll spot one or two that actually make it work (heavens! that means the sky must be falling).

Finally, what bothered me most of all were Ravil's constant insistence that the baby was "his" (as opposed to "theirs") and his orders regarding the birth. When a man tells a woman what to do with her body -- which he does every time he makes unilateral decisions about where and how the baby will be born -- I'm out. Again, Ms. Rose tries to make this palatable later, but, while I don't think this was her intention, his attitude was way too close to the forced-birther anti-choice movement for my comfort.

At the end of the day, I couldn't get beyond Ravil's actions at the beginning; just because they might work out doesn't excuse them. YMMV.

2 stars. I do appreciate Ms. Rose's "don't try this at home, folks" disclaimer that I wish more erotic authors would include. There are at least four other Bratva men who will probably get their own books.

If you remember this couple in a anthology now they get a full story!! I already didn't enjoy how Lucy was lying already. Ravil and her had a one night stand at a bdsm club and the condom broke, she told him not to worry she would take a plan b pill. Well she didn't become she always wanted to be a mom. 😒😒😒😒 I find that very ugh. Thats how they met. Now in this story its there what happened after.

Now with the real story this one Lucy is a attorney and her next client happens to be Ravil and someone in his brotherhood and he notices a certain bump and puts two and two together. So im not sorry he kidnapped her because he wants to be apart of his child's life. And well Lucy was a big ol Hypocrite enough said on what she does.
I enjoyed Ravil wayyyy more then Lucy with her actions she left a bad taste in my mouth. He wasn't super mean but he did threaten alot and made sure everyone in the household spoke Russians so Lucy can depend on him. Lol but ill give it to Lucy she did learn the language just to annoy Ravil lol. We get alot of tension and moments between the two and some drama with the case, and a set of seconds characters. I wonder who is our next couple the silent russia giant or the new couple that got back?

No om/ow drama, no cheating, drama, sexy times, slight secondary character, no virgins

she got preggo at a BDSM event & months later her Baby Daddy walks into her office as her next mafia client 🔥 the exact opposite of a slow burn!

Lucy is a bad bitch criminal lawyer trying to make partner. Her life comes crashing down when her Baby Daddy walks into her office and discovers she is having his bebeee 🤰🏼she did try to hide this and now he is ultra pissed!

🌶️ mmc has full-body tattoos but always in a business suit *new microtrope*

🌶️ mmc loves making her submit to him!

🌶️ she gets caught watching Russian spanking porn *I’m gagged*

This was a classic mafia romance with a possessive OTT mmc, light revenge plot (baby sneaking) and lots of spice. Ravil aka the mafia baby daddy is actually really hurt that Lucy doesn’t see him as a father and delivers several delicious punishments!

I picked this up because I was in the mood for a pregnancy trope and this delivered on all the surpassingly tender moments.I did wish there was more depth to these characters but alas the story was short.

This is the rest of Lucy and Ravil’s story.
A story that started in Prelude, that was part of Black Light Roulette War.
After that encounter, they parted ways, and Lucy ended up pregnant.
Knowing him only as Master R,and having seen a violent side to him,Lucy hasn’t told him about her pregnancy.
But now they meet again, when she’s recommended to him as a lawyer to defend a man under his protection.

Finding out she’s pregnant,knowing it’s his,makes Ravil take action….
She’s going to come home with him,and stay there until she has his baby.
Yes,she’s attracted to him. But she struggles with the kind of man he is.
So….he’s going to convince her to make the right decision.

Lucy planned to do this alone after her ex had his chance and dragged his heels at the commitment.
Finding out she was pregnant after Black Light Roulette was a gift she embraced, but she never expected the father to reappear in her life.
Or what he would do…..and how could she resist him when he treated her like she was precious?

This a an opposites attract, and it was one that i enjoyed.
They were both likeable, strong, smart, and they had chemistry.
Lucy had to fight for everything she’d achieved in her professional career.
Submitting was hard, but with the right man,it seemed natural.
Ravil never considered having a family, but found that with his Lady Luck it could be just what he needed.
It was a relative short story, but had enough depth to make it a pleasant read.

I couldn’t finish

I gave the book two stars because the synopsis interested me. However, what I didn’t not understand/like, was that this man kidnapped her, threatened to take their baby once it was born and never let her see it, and next she is trembling at his touch all within one damn sentence???!!!! Protection for the baby was not more important than your arousal. I usually love stories like these, but only when they make sense and the characters don’t have two brain cells.

“You never wanted romance, kitten. You wanted conquering.”

Secret pregnancy/captive lite romance. This one is entertaining and pretty much straight the point. Heat and captivity lite romance with pregnancy trope as well. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’ve found it.

After that Prelude it was nearly impossible to set something on top but Renee Rose did! After perfect is only unbelievable perfect and impossible awesome!
To pick this explosive couple at this time in the process of development to get to know each other in this particular combination and way to act between the sheet was very interesting and utterly perfect managed. It takes Courage, strength, curiosity and empathy to handle it so unbelievable perfect. Fantastic!
I’m really happy to read this specific and special story and get this view with a HEA and and the prospect of more to come with this unique family.

Can’t wait!!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The hero is a misogynistic possessive manipulative jerk pretend to be an alpha hero. I'd never never read this author again.

- I put the word out before I left to break into her apartment. Everyone speaks Russian in front of Lucy. No English. If she wants something, she'll have to rely on me.

The only good thing about this book is the man on the cover.

I quite enjoyed this story from Renee Rose. Even though I found the writing simple at times, the story still flowed, and kept me interested. It’s a soft Bratva tale, no violence, only the suggestion of past deeds. I found it entertaining enough that I will keep reading more in this series.

This was book 1 in the "Chicago Bratva" series. Lucy Lawrence is a high powered defense attorney who is 5 months pregnant from a one night stand at a BDSM club when her new client walks in with his boss her baby daddy. Ravil Baranov is head of the Chicago Bratva and he gets a shock turns out the lawyer is his hook up at the club on Valentine's Day and she is pregnant with his baby that she didn't tell him about so what does a bad boy do he kidnaps her. Ravil treats her well he did his homework on what keeps a pregnant woman happy. I liked both of these characters Ravil has had a hard life he belongs to a Brotherhood that leaves no room for family. Lucy was in a long term relationship for 8 years she wanted to get married and have a family but he didn't so she ended it and got pregnant shortly after. Lucy is also dealing with her father having a stroke and trying to make partner in her dads firm. Lucy didn't think that Ravil would make a good father because she knows what is tattoos stand for and it hurt his feelings. The sex scenes were hot. I liked all the secondary characters in this book and I can't wait to read about them. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

This is so surface level that nothing makes sense or hits right. The story started somewhere else so that might have something to do with it but there's just not much here but cardboard cutouts
She's preggo and hiding it, he finds out and kidnaps her. I'm told she's this high powered kick ass attorney but let's herself be kidnapped because she's horny? He's supposed to be a villainous MMC but I see no sign of this except for the kidnapping, which let's face it, she didn't even fight him on. I beg authors please do some character development! This would have been awesome had it had any of it. Instead it's just empty sex scenes with no emotion. Meh.

Unfortunately I couldn’t get over the fact she was a prisoner and it just felt wrong that she was happily having sex with him. The description sounded interesting but the way it was written was disappointing.

Update (Audiobook) 21 March 21

I listened to the audio version on this book, and I think it enhances the story. At least for me it did. I don't know how accurate the Russian accents or language was an the audiobook, but it added that little something extra to the tale. In fact, I enjoyed actually hearing the Russian being spoken.

Review: 23 October 20
I started reading "The Director", and realized that Ravil and Lucy's story started in the last Valentine Roulette book. I went back and read " Prelude" so I would understand their beginning.

After reading Prelude, I also realized that it wasn't necessary to read it first in order to understand want was going on in this book.

I initially had mixed feelings about Ravil and Lucy, especially with her being an attorney. Also with the whole Bratva wasn't supposed to have a wife and child connection thing. I could not see how he and Lucy were going to reconcile all the issues at hand.

After Ravil discovered Lucy and took her back to his penthouse, the rest was pretty predictable. Although, you could almost forget that these were Russian gangsters. It was a real family atmosphere.

What I couldn't understand is how Lucy could look down on Ravil. Her father made his reputation and earned his living off of defending members of the Italian mob. Lucy made her living defending the same gangsters and added a Russian gangster to her client list. Lucy also made a deliberate decision after her night at Black Light without any intention of ever informing Ravil. So, while Ravil was wrong in the way he handled things, Lucy was not much better.

Ravil was the head of US operations, and everyone was supposed to fear him. He actually came across, as a supportive friend, a mentor, and a protector to the people that lived in the Kremlin. I couldn't look at him in a terrible light, because he didn't do anything horrendous. He just made a lot of threats.

I didn't like either of Lucy's parents. They seemed very judgmental. Once again, based on her father's career, her mother reaping the benefits of said career, and her father's philosophy about representing people he knew to be guilty. I could understand not wanting your daughter involved with a criminal, but since that is who she spent most of her time around, could they really be surprised?

Then we get to Lucy's friend Gretchen. What she did, and then what she did to clean up the first thing she did was ridiculous.

All in all, it was a surprisingly predictable Russian mafia romance with a hint of D/s and spanking. There was a definite HEA between the Bratva leader and the defense attorney. There was also a link to a bonus story, but I wasn't able to access it. Maybe because I was reading the ARC. This wasn't a bad book. I think it was a lot more tame than what I was expecting. Even with the "kidnapping", it came across as a kind of sweet, sexy romance in a contradictory kind of way.

I would give this book 3.5 stars, if for no other reason that it kept me interested to the end. I really wanted to see the direction it would take and how things would be resolved.

I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader copy of this book.

An anonymous one night stand with in a BDSM club leaves the FMC, an ambitious lawyer, pregnant and she decides not to tell the father, who she knows is in the bratva.
But destiny happens and he shows up as a client at her office and gets FURIOUS that she thought he was not worthy of being her baby's father. A blackmail kidnaping ensues.
The FMC is highly intelligent and motivated and plays the game well. So does the MMC. But we can see and feel them falling in love (brilliant writing here) although none of them are completely aware.

This is a game of chess we are playing. It could be pleasurable for both of us, even though one of us, me, will always win.

The development of their relationship - along with character development - was so much fun to watch! And I say watch and not read because it was brilliantly written, all shown and nothing told. As if we were there really watching everything develop.
There were seriously HOT smexy times, emotional and sweet moments, and even some hilarious bits.

The characters were all awesome: the strong and emotional mature FMC, the cinnamon roll swoony bad boy MMC and an array of incredible and diverse side characters.

Why not 5 stars? Because the ending felt a bit rushed. I needed a bit more...
There's a bonus epilogue in the author's website, if you subscribe the newsletter, but I needed it to be in the book.

DNF

I couldn’t even get through the first chapter. What pregnant woman, who is swollen with child, wears 3 inch high stilettos? As a mother of three, no way a woman would risk three inch heels. Any doc would tell her a big fat No! The writer says it makes this character look Boss-ass. 😒 But no it doesn’t. It makes this character look utterly ignorant and extremely stupid.

They do add that this character’s feet are swollen, though I don’t get how three inches of heels can dig into her (the shoes, yes. Not the heels) but continues to walk around around. Don’t understand that pregnant woman’s feet swell and wearing even snickers becomes in issue?

Anyway, that point alone irritated me a lot. Couldn’t get pass it because this writer kept bringing it up.

I really dislike writing negative reviews, especially on a well written and interesting book. My problem with this one is that it felt like it started halfway into the relationship. A whole, an important chunk was missing and I really wanted to read it. Also it didn't help that they kept referring back to their meeting and what happened between them without giving much details. I am not aware if there is a book that comes before this one or if the author intended to write their relationship as such.

As I said it's not a bad book it just didn't work for me. Maybe I'll have more luck with the next one in the series.

Remember Ravil and Lucy from Black Light Valentines Night?
The forceful but attentive and very in-ventive Russian and the skittish lawyer?
Well, Lucy's been keeping a little secret since that night. The result of an "oops" of their protective gear.
And when they meet again, purely accidental, Ravil goes all Neanderthal. "My woman, my kid, you're staying, or else..."
But somehow he doesn't seem like a nasty Bratva boss, more like a considerate landlord with a bad-boy vibe!

If you want a book about a nepo baby who quits because a partner doesn't like her (her dad is a partner at a law firm) and goes off with a Russian mafia dude after a week (and after a one night stand at bdsm club five months ago resulting in pregnancy) then this is for you. Did I mention she is kidnapped by the guy???
