A journey halfway across the world. Two people determined to remain on their chosen paths. But life doesn't always go to plan...
Captain Robert Crawford is proud to have achieved his first command. Despite his taciturn manner, he loves his ship, and those who serve under him are loyal and steadfast. Passengers, however, are another matter—troublesome, unpredictable and the bane of his life. The shipping company’s other edict is no better; he must marry, and the sooner the better. Even his best friend cannot understand why this troubles him so much. How could he when Robert has never confided in anyone about his past?
Miss Agnes Dinwiddie is still grieving one year on from her father's death. Seeing no future for herself in her old home, she accepts her brother’s invitation to be his housekeeper in America. Accepting a position as companion for the duration of the journey, she expects the trip to be the perfect balm to take her away from her heartache and help her to heal. What she wasn’t expecting was to meet an infuriating, complicated captain.
Confined on board with demanding passengers and a young woman who seems to challenge him at every turn, and who he can’t stop thinking about, Captain Crawford wonders what the devil he has done to deserve such a trial. One thing’s for certain, he’s never experienced a journey like it before.
The Spinster's Captain is a Victorian Romance, topped with a generous amount of humour, action and tears. If you like simmering chemistry, compelling but complex characters and fast-paced action, then this is the perfect book for you. For lovers of Regency or Victorian romance.
Audrey Harrison was born about two hundred years too late. She wants to belong to a time when men were men and women were dressed in gowns and could float, simper and sigh.
In the real world she has always longed to write, writing a full manuscript when she was fourteen years old. Work, marriage and children got in the way as they do and it was only when an event at work landed her in hospital that she decided to take stock. One Voluntary Redundancy later, she found that the words and characters came to the forefront and the writing began in earnest.
Her ideal would be to write Regency Romances, but more modern characters are insisting on being heard, hence the release of’ ‘A Very Modern Lord’, a contemporary romance.
So, although at home more these days, the housework is still neglected and tea is still late on the table, but she has an understanding family, who usually shake their heads at her and sigh. That is a sign of understanding, isn’t it?
A Victorian kisses-only romance, based on a true story. Both MCs were Scottish. I gave this 4 of 5 stars.
Captain Robert Crawford carried goods, & now passengers for his employer, a shipping company. Most thought him aloof, with a permanent frown. He only had his father, but spent the bulk of his time @ sea. Witty & charming David, his 1st mate, knew how to talk to ladies. He saw Agnes as a gem before the Captain did.
Agnes grieved for her gent farmer sire who recently died. She had 10 sibs & she + two older sisters were spinsters. She agreed to move to America to become her eldest brother "Robbie's" housekeeper. They estimated the voyage would take 60 days. She arranged to be the pd temporary companion, on the ship, of widowed Mrs. Topping, heading for Canada. Mrs. T also traveled with a maid.
The Captain avoided passengers and came across as brusque. The Captain made the worst, most insulting MOC proposal & it showed. This story explored- did people run from problems? could he/ she change his/ her mind once a decision was made? did certain folks act fickle? what of trust? I liked the pacing + dialogue. And the atypical couple. Mrs. T showed humor and good sense. She could also verbally cut someone off at the knees.
This is not the type of book I'd normally read, (Romance), but I really enjoyed it! I love the fact that it is based on a true story about the author's relative. There was great character development and a story to tell, with a few little side stories added. Great interaction between characters, and a few witty remarks thrown in. Very enjoyable indeed!
An engaging story all the more delightful because it is based on the author`s family history
A determined Agnes leaves Scotland to make a new life with her brother in New York. The eventful account of her trip across the Atlantic, full of historical detail, is combined with the heart-warming story of a love affair that at first seems doomed to failure. Audrey Harrison has done it again!
The fact that this was based on real life did not make this more readable. I found the language unimaginative, and the story predictable. At times I nearly gave up but I don't like not finishing a book.
5 STARS for this different look at a Historical Romance Drama which is well written fast paced & has a lot of action. A good BLURB is provided. The characters are likeable.
This gives a great look of people traveling by ship to America from different ports in Scotland during the time of the potato famine happening in Ireland. Agnes, considered a spinster where she lived in her small town & by her 11 siblings was traveling to America. She was paying her way by becoming a companion to a older lady traveling on to Canada to her Son & they were in the first class state rooms even though they were very small. Agnes was on to New York to be her eldest brother's housekeeper.
She had not seen him in 5 years & in a family with that many siblings until you separate from the others you never know how you will get along together. Plus, she wanted to get away from her Pa dying.
So many things happen on trips as long as these, people fall in love, decide to return just all kinds. It is interesting to read the things that happen on board ship, the terrible accident & why when in New York dock they stayed almost 2 weeks very unusual.
This is a real life story & really happened the love story did. I really liked it & thought yes her brother needed a wife to start with but he doesn't get one in this book. Not his story.
A young woan by our standards, but a spinster by standards of the mid 19th century, Agnes has decided she misses her father way too much to stay in the farmhouse now that both parents are gone. Her big brother has been in NYC for 5 years and needs a housekeeper. She agrees. He finds her a position as a lady's companion, which allows her better accommodations without costing a fortune or wondering what to do about safe escorts for a single woman. The captain of the ship on which she'll be sailing is supposed to marry; all captains are supposed to marry within a few years if they somehow got a promotion before they married. This captain doesn't want to, but he finds himself attracted to Agnes.. and she to him. A series of misconceptions, miscommunications, misunderstandings, happens that throws everything into turmoil. Her brother and she are at odds; the captain and his first mate are at odds; no ine seems to be communicating well at all. This is threatening the very idea that the captain and Agnes might be in love and marry. Is it too late for them, or will Rabbie, the brither come around and try to understand, and will the captain find the courage to follow his heart...and will Agnes say yes?
I remembered this author from reading "Lord Livesy's Bluestocking" and I liked the cover art including the ship. What I found was a beautiful love story between a sea captain and a spinster traveling to join her brother in America. I loved meeting her Scottish family (11 siblings in all) and the descriptions of life and travel at sea in the mid-1800s. Captain Robert Crawford has a past history that has left him untrusting of women. He also has no idea how to approach a woman who has taken his fancy against his will. He is an awkward flirt, but an experienced sailor. Agnes Dinwiddie (interesting name) is 25 and sailing to America where her oldest brother needs a housekeeper, but she finds out more when she arrives that may change her decision. Will these two finally come to understand the feelings they have for each other before it's too late and the captain sails out of her life? I was even happier, in the end, to realize that their story was based on fact. What a sweet ending to a wonderful book! On to book 2.
Agnes is leaving her home in Scotland to join her brother in America to be his housekeeper. She is sailing as a companion to Mrs Toppings, a widow travelling to her son in Canada. Before the ship leaves the harbour she has an altercation with with the Captain. Each time they interact their attraction grows but the Captain allows something from his past to deny the attraction and try to put distance between them. She challenges him at every turn and I love this about Agnes. I kind of wanted to smack Captain Robert for forever saying or doing the wrong thing and was happy for them both when he finally got it right. I have read this trope many times but prefer this because it concentrated on Agnes, the captain and passengers rather than sexual escapades.
3 1/2 stars 25 yr. old Agnes Dinwiddie crosse the Atlantic from Scotland to New York to join her brother who has been in America for five years. She considers herself a spinster so being his housekeeper seems the best choice at this point.
The voyage is challenging but also brings some excitement as the captain, Robert Crawford, is one interesting and handsome man. Capt. Crawford is not looking for a wife but there’s something about Agnes that commands his attention, other than just the ship.
The interesting part of this story is that Agnes and Robert are real people, actually ancestors of the author. It is their story based on the ship notes, logs and personal histories. I commend author Audrey Harrison for turning this unique love story into one we can enjoy too. How fun to hear the outcome of Robert and Agnes and their legacy!
I enjoyed this book. As it was based on a true story, it was very realistic. We have a realistic view of the characters, warts and all! I really loved all the background information about the families and the characters. It’s so much easier to relate to and empathize with the characters when we have an idea of their history and background. The entire book revolves around them trying to come together and succeeding at the very end. I wish the book had included an epilogue wherein we could see the loving interaction of the couple once they were together. I feel that would have been a more satisfying ending. But it’s a very fine story and definitely worth the read.
I read this not realising it was based on a true story, knowing it is makes me warm to it more. A lovely gentle love story, with its trials and tribulations, building to a climax. Agnes, one of eleven children accepts an invitation to travel to New York to help her oldest brother, who's been in the city for five years. Agnes has accepted a role as companion to offset some of her travel costs.
She sets sail on the Broom, ably captained by Robert, young to be a captain he's worked hard to be promoted to the role. Cautious around women after being abandoned by his mother, he finds he keeps being drawn to Agnes. But she has plans with her brother. I liked that the author didn't 'write' the Scottish accents, we assumed them.
This book is based on a true family story about a sea captain who must marry (to keep his job) and a spinster going to New York to keep house for her older brother. They meet on board (of course), and the story is slow-moving and about their courtship.
When Agnes Dinwiddle arrives in New York, her brother Rabbie shocks the reader with his self-absorption and single-mindedness. However, just before the end ot the story, he has an epiphany. This seemed so contrived, and I was disappointed in the sudden change in character. It didn't ring true. Overall score = G+.
Spinster Series ** 1. The Spinster's Captain (2021) 2. The Spinster's Second Chance (2021) 3. The American Spinster (2022)
Like it says in the summary, it is based on a true story! This story is about one of the author’s ancestors. Which is cool. She obviously took some liberties because she is writing a historical fiction romance.
I wanted to read a romance and this one fit the bill. It’s clean, has romance and is a little different because most of it takes place on a ship.
I feel like some stuff could have been fleshed out more but it wasn’t a bad book. If you want a fluffy romance, you can give this one a try.
It isn't easy to convert family history into a compelling narrative. Facts are known, but emotions are hard to describe when they seem like intimate family secrets. It just isn't the same as an historical background for a romance. This author was able to tell her tale with instinctive insight filling in the narrative of stories passed down in her family. I hated for Agnes and Robert to sail on without me.
Giving 5 stars because Audrey Harrison knows how to tell a story-she rocked it again! I loved it even more upon learning it was based on her ancestors story. I am a hopeless romantic and love learning about the stories of the families we come from. What an honor to do this for Agnes & Captain Robert & especially for their descendants. Truely a treasure.
Agnes Dineiddie at 25 was considered a spinster at 25. When she accepts a job as her brothers housekeeper I New York, she didn’t count on falling for the ships Captain,Robert Crawford despite his being infuriating and very much convinced he would never marry. Abandoned by his mother as a child, he finally comes to the realization that all women were not like his mother. He has to eat a lot of crow before he realizes that Agnes is a gem and he would be most foolish not to make a match with her. It’s clean, wholesome story with twists and turns before Captain Crawford wakes up and realizes Agnes is indeed the woman for him.
A spinster falling in love with a captain. She is strong willed, opinionated and brilliant. He is hurt, untrusting and doesn’t believe in love. Their road to happiness is not an easy one! Robert has to fight his own ghosts before allowing himself to love. David and Mrs Topping are pure gems! I have laughed several times along the way! I gave four stars because there are many typos remaining, otherwise it would have been a five star book.
I loved the facts mentioned at the end of the story and to know that the characters were based on real people. I loved David’s character also - so fun and charming. I didn’t like Agnes much, I sort of felt she did ditch her brother without even giving it some time. I mean it would be more believable if her she insisted on being dutiful and her brother found a different option rather then her just jumping ship as soon as she got a new offer.
Honestly like super cute. I really liked the historical part of it and fell in love with the characters and the time setting and it just felt so real like. And the fact that it’s based off a true store was so so nice. Just overall really liked and it was such a quick little read and I also have such a love for the sea and its lore so having a book in that setting g was super interesting to me. Overall really enjoyed it
This tells of how Agnes, who thinks she is a spinster, meets Robert, captain of the ship she boards to go to her brother’s home, to be his housekeeper in NewYork. Over the weeks of travel they are attracted to each other. Problem is he has issues about marriage he will need to address if he wants his happy ever after
Robert always blamed his mom for leaving him and his father. He intended never to marry because his wife would do the same. Until he met Agnes and his feelings were mixed up. He liked her but couldn’t marry. Finally his train of thoughts were not one sided. He decided he would ask Agnes to marry him.
A good read. Agnes is moving away from Scotland to stay with her brother in New York. She is travelling with her employer Mrs Topping aboard the Broom. Everything is going well until she falls for Robert the captain. They have no hope of a future as she has already promised her brother to help. Robert knows that he wants to be with Agnes but she turns him down. Can he win her over?
I enjoyed the dynamics between the spinster, who thought she was not destined for marriage, and the captain who, although possessed admirable qualities, had issues. Great characters, including the secondary ones who helped make the story. Great action scene. A great read.
Sweet romance. Based off of the author's ancestors. She seems to have done her research of this historical time period. Gave interesting insights into ship life.
I loved everything about this book : the characters, the story, that it continued without going back to another time. I enjoyed Mrs. Topping and all the characters. I finished it in a day as I couldn't put it down.
Enjoy reading a true romance from time and this was a perfect read on a lazy Autumn weekend. Can only imagine the courage it took for immigrants to come to America for better opportunities. Sweet romance with likable characters.
Audrey Harrison is one of my favourite authors so reading this book was no hardship. This is well up to her usual standard and I cannot wait to read the rest of this series
A different plot. I gave it a four star because the captain's reluctance seemed a bit far fetched considering he never even knew what had happened to his mother. That doesn't spoil the story. It was a refreshingly different plot.
I like books & movies based on a true story. Agnes & Captain Robert have interesting challenges on their voyage across the ocean to America. Robert doesn't know what to make of feisty Agnes & the other females on his ship. There's a little mystery during the voyage also. It's a nice read.
A wonderful story of life and love. Traveling across the ocean gives a young girl plenty of time to ponder what life has in store for her. The emotions of love can sure confuse her thinking. The man she lovbes seems very confused too! I love a story with a happy ending.
