Sabina is a young noblewoman who, based on her soothsayer aunt's prediction, believes her words are dangerous and will hurt those she loves. Following the death of her beloved husband, she takes a vow of silence to protect others from suffering the same fate. Ignored and scorned by those around her, who believe her to be cursed by the gods who took her voice, she is content to live in the shadow of her former life, avoiding society as best she can and staying away from the politics and drama of Rome's inner circles.
Lucius is an unwilling front-runner to inherit the title of Emperor from Rome's childless leader, Trajan. Although the soothsayer warns him to steer clear of a pretty face that hides a cursed soul, Lucius cannot help but be drawn to the silent and beautiful Sabina. After learning her secret, he is as determined to help her shed her cloak of silence as she is to keep him at a safe distance. But when Lucius becomes the target of a political plot, Sabina must decide whether breaking her silence will save his life or merely seal his fate.

Ah ‘simple’ romances are usually a hit or miss for me, but that of Admonition, a short but sweet historical romance, was most definitely a hit.

Admonition is the second book in the Soothsayer’s path series (the first being Soothsayer which I enjoyed last year!), but it can definitely be enjoyed as a standalone as well! It is set in Ancient Rome, following Sabina, a young noblewoman who is grief-stricken by the death of her husband, and condemned herself to silence to protect those she loves, as well as Lucius, the son of a powerful Senator, whose path towards inheriting the title of Emperor seems clear, until he takes to Sabina. However, there are quite a number of obstacles and hindrances along the way, ranging from personal pasts to political plots.

。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
The heart was made to feel, the body made to love.

I thought that Admonition was just a lovely historical romance, pairing the two so well together. Its historical side, being set in Ancient Rome, brought out the romance well, in terms of atmosphere. it was one with much familial and societal expectations and power in politics, dominating patriarchy, as well as that of women in courtship. For me, these all ingrained in the setting of Ancient Rome allowed the challenges faced in the romance to be believable, and flow well.

。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
Because, young man, some things are too important to leave to fate.

Ah usually I crave slow burn, while simultaneously having it drive me up the wall, but for Admonition it was not the case. The slow build up in the romance, with Sabina and Lucius treating each other gently, and giving each other time to open up, was just so heartfelt that definitely gave my heart the fuzzies. Both were so sensitive, empathetic and to an extent, sacrificial characters, and I adored every second of their interactions.

Another relationship that made me smile was that between Sabina and her stepsister Priscilla. Priscilla was many years her juniors, a young, innocent, but too easily led astray, woman, which I found a little irksome at first. However, the love between them was made evident, and their actions thinking of each other truly drove the story in such an interesting way!

。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
And in the end, we must trust that whatever our future holds, good or bad, it is our fate. We must arrive at our destiny honestly and with no regrets.

One of the features that drew me to both of Kathryn Amurra’s first novel: Soothsayer, that also was weaved into Admonition was that of soothsayers, those that tell of prophecies. Yes, thank you to my Percy Jackson obsessed self. I loved the way that once again the prophecies were left open to many interpretations, and both brought out the best qualities of our characters, as well as caused quite a bit of misunderstanding (yes friends, a version of the miscomm trope actually done well.). Truly in awe of how a few short, albeit ominous lines, can spin a story!

。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
Overall, Admonition was such a sweet, slow historical romance with such genuine characters and relationships. If all that plus prophecies appeals to you, then please go check out Kathryn Amurra’s second book in the Soothsayer series!

Admonition is a wonderful historical romance that takes place in ancient Rome and follows Sabina and Lucius. Sabine is a young noblewoman who hasn’t spoken since her husband Felix died. Considered cursed by the gods, Sabine is content with her solitary, grief-filled life, and most steer clear of her. She never intends to find love again and avoids situations where she might be subjected to male interest. However, when she meets Lucius, Sabine’s world is irrevocably changed.

Lucius, the son of one of the most influential senators of the Emperor, is drawn to the beguiling and silent Sabina. However, many obstacles stand in their way including secrets, career moves, another suitor, Sabina’s fears, nefarious plots, and foreboding prophecies. Lucius is determined to convince Sabina that their love is worth fighting for, but when his life hangs in the balance, Sabina must decide what is more important – clinging to her fears or fighting for her love.

The romance between Sabina and Lucius is slow-building and lovely. Sabina’s world was shattered when she lost her beloved husband, and she didn’t intend to ever find love again. However, Lucius, honorable, patient, and understanding, changes her. I like seeing how both characters grappled with their feelings, their responsibilities, and societal and familial demands. I also like that Lucius doesn’t push Sabina. He knows how much she loved her husband, and he lets her set the pace of their relationship. I think this says a lot about his affection for her, as well as his own selflessness. The way that this pair comes together and defies all odds is positively swoon-worthy.

Actions are often calculated. Words are measured. But the soul is pure. It cannot be contrived. I hope you do not find me presumptuous, my lady, but I believe I know your soul. And I believe I am a better man for it.

Sabina is a well-developed character, and her growth throughout the story is impressive. Between her fears of the prophecy and her guilt of loving someone other than Felix, Sabina suffers so much inner turmoil. I think that’s why she spends much of her time supervising her younger, impetuous sister and doesn’t prioritize her own happiness. Her guilt and fears often get in the way of what she really wants.

I also love how Lucius is one of the few people to really look past Sabina’s “curse” and see the good, kind, and selfless woman underneath. Most people, including family, treat Sabina as less than because of her muteness. She is also treated unkindly because of the curse. But Lucius never sees anything but a beautiful, intelligent, and strong woman. Lucius makes Sabina hope again, and it is lovely. Their connection is strong from their first meeting, and it only grows.

The setting and time period are a refreshing change from the historical romances that I usually read. Set in ancient Rome, the city and the outlying areas come to life. Amurra paints a clear picture of Rome and the countryside during this time-period and shows how the culture of the time influenced and motivated the characters. Political influences, patriarchal ideals, women’s pressure to suitably marry, and the desire for power all propel characters in the story and offer a glimpse of life for people during this time.

Finally, I want to talk about the relationship between Sabina and her sister Priscilla. At first, I didn’t love this sisterly relationship. It felt like Priscilla took Sabina for granted and barely respected her. She seemed very selfish and self-involved and very different from Sabina. I also felt like Sabina hid behind caring for her young and often impetuous sister. However, Priscilla shows as much growth throughout the book as Sabina. That she verbalizes her realizations, especially in regard to her sister, is very touching, and by the end of the book, I loved this complex yet simple sisterly bond.

Admonition is a great addition to the Soothsayer’s Path series, and though it is the second book in the series, it can totally be read as a standalone. If you’re a fan of historical romances with well-developed characters, a bit of intrigue, and a swoon-worthy romance, then you’ll love this story. Thanks so much to Kathryn Amurra for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

*I was kindly sent a copy of this in exchange for an honest review via the author*

I went into this knowing I was already going to love the writing. Kathryn's writing is so great and really immerses you into the setting and culture of Ancient Rome.
This was definitely not as gripping as the plot of Soothsayer was (I read that in a single sitting because I could not put it down!) but it was still really enjoyable.
It was an interesting combination of slow-paced in the sense that the main issue of the story manifested a little later into the story than expected, but it was also fast-paced in the sense that the romance (which was central and driving to the plot) felt a little insta-lovey. Especially from Lucius's POV because, despite never having spoken to her, he describes being inexplicably drawn to her and that he feels that despite her silence he knows her soul.
Usually, this is the kind of thing that has me DNF'ing or at least rating a book 1 star. But there are two things that I think save this from that status - the first being that fate and destiny are pivotal to the plot of this book. It's all about divinations and whether to believe them or follow your own path. So in this sense, this almost-mystical pull towards each other kind of fits with the world and situations they are in. The other saving grace is that they quickly form more of a bond more than this "connection" and so it becomes trivial in their overarching romance.
These are the main reasons it took me a while to get into this, but after the 30% mark, I read straight through because the other plot picked up and their romance became more. So this is definitely a book that grew into itself as it progressed, with the later chapters being some of my favourites - The humour increased, the plot was gripping and dramatic and the romance was so so sweet at that stage that I was awwing on almost every page.
Out-with the romance I liked the characters, I thought they all had their nice little quirks that made them feel just different enough but also still fitting with the constraints of the historical setting.
So overall this was a nice heartwarming historical romance with a fun criminal-justice twist that I wasn't expecting. I was definitely less invested in this than in Soothsayer, but it would have been nearly impossible to top Soothsayer because it was just incredible.
I can't wait to read whatever Kathyrn Amurra writes next because they are yet to disappoint me. Great romances, fun plots with a mystical feeling to them, and light humour - so up my street whilst being different to my usual read. Definitely recommend.

It is time again to throw on our palla and head for Ancient Rome courtesy of Amurra's latest release! Readers of Soothsayer will be pleased to hear we are back at the governor's engagement soiree partying it up. Here, Sabina and Lucius are mingling as guests tend to and just happen to meet and the rest is written in the stars. Or at least that's the hope.

Readers should keep in mind that some soothsayer meddling makes this romance feel fated so there is a bit of insta-love, which isn't truly my favorite trope. I am pleased that I enjoyed Lucius and Sabina enough both as a couple and as individuals so this fated-love pairing didn't bother me.

This romance is sweet, slow burn with just a tantalizing hint of spice buried in that delicious tension simmering between Lucius and Sabina. Lucius's adoration and respect for Sabina and her history made him absolutely swoon-worthy. I would love to break it down more but I don't want to give away potential spoilers.

Odd as it may seem, I really enjoyed Priscilla's part in this tale. At the start, her feather-brained boy-crazed antics irritated me but as the story progresses, we catch small glimpses that made me question how much of it is an act. She is delightfully complex it would seem and her bond with her sister was just as authentic and intricate as non-fiction sibling relationships tend to be.

Admonition boasts a rich, historical setting with a heartwarming romance. Sprinkle in a little bit of political intrigue and some a handful of smarmy, slimy side characters to add in some tension and you have the recipe for this delightful romance. If you are looking for a historical romance outside the usual regency reads, then give this series a whirl. Admonition reads as a standalone so don't feel like you have to start with Soothsayer.

I am very thrilled to read ADMONITION after I read SOOTHSAYER by Kathryn Amurra.
Again, found myself in a different world of passion and feelings. Reading about romance always open those doors of the times that life went by with me, and brings me back to my youth whereabouts in this world of human passion and interferences. Let me repeat myself, A book is not easy to read and enjoy unless it relates to your past dreams and feelings. Kathryn Amurra knows how to bring this back to me, Thank you Kathryn job well done and very entertainin and learned a lot about myself.
With that said, I found that ADMONITION took me back to where about SOOTHSAYER left me after I read it. Kathryn Amurra knows how to take me from this Corona world to a better place, one full of passion, dreams and romance. It took me back to Cairo, my first and always romance in Egypt. What a feeling to refresh and activate, could not let the book down for a minute, easy to read, very accurate in taking you thru that passion of love long time ago, the characters and the story are very real to me.
The author described those sentiments that I thought during my reading were all mine.
Hard to tell, I am enjoying my dreams again, now as never before.
I strongly recommend reading this book, and learn more about yourself and your passion and youth dreams from the story and characters that Kathryn Amurra articulated.

I didn’t think it was possible but I enjoyed this book so much more than the first one.

I loved how this story picks up during the events in the first book, and the way that it is done is perfect. You do not get a retelling of the events in the first book this story just branches off in a whole new direction. To the point we didn’t even meet these characters in the first book. I think that the way that it was handled was done so well.

Sabina who believes that her aunt’s (the Soothsayer) reading is the reason for all the horrible things that happen to the ones she loves. We also have Sabina’s sister who is very naïve but has a good heart. Anyone who has ever been around teenagers would understand the struggles Sabina has of having to keep her in line as her chaperone all the while not being able to speak.

Lucius, who has seen how politics can affect men and their families doesn’t care for it. I don’t know what it is about him but I liked him from the beginning. It may have to do with the way he always treated Sabina. Everyone thought she was cursed by the Gods so they avoided her, but Lucius looked beyond that from the start. He saw something in here that no-one outside of her family dared look for. When Lucius is pulled into a political plot where he could save himself at the cost of others his response to that situation just showed how wonderful of a person he really is.

This story teaches a lesson about reading into things. The four main characters in this book all have a reading by the Soothsayer. Each one is interpreted differently and none of them was right. I did like how at the end of the story you see them piecing the readings together after the fact. Though I do have to agree with Sabina what good are the predictions if you can’t figure them out until after the fact.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

"Clean"/"Proper" romances are not my usual thing. I don't think I have ever sought one out of my own volition, but even though this book is lacking the hot, spicy sex scenes I live for, one cannot argue that Amurra knows how to write a captivating story.

She gets major points, in my opinion, for writing a historical romance that doesn't take place in 1800s England. I love sinking into Ancient Rome and just immersing myself in a culture and location that I know absolutely nothing about. I would read this book if there were no romance, honestly, just because of how much I enjoyed learning about the time period.

This novel's story was a little less intense than that of her previous book, but I still found myself on the edge of my seat a few times as the "villains" each tried to make their mark on the hero and heroine's lives. It was just enough drama to keep my attention, but not enough to detract from the main plot of the relationship.

Sabina and Lucius are perfect together. Watching their relationship develop and strengthen was a beautiful thing and, as I mentioned before, it's a testament to Amurra's writing talent that I find myself so captivated by a book (and relationship) that doesn't have multiple sex scenes in it.

For those who like their romance novels in the low-heat but high-romance department, with an added bonus of amazing setting and writing, you'll really enjoy Amurra's work.

Heat Factor: It’s more tender and sweeping romance than it is ripped bodices and handsy stuff

Character Chemistry: So, I feel like it was obvious Sabina would like a wholehearted and upstanding person like Lucius after reading about her first marriage. Some people just have their heads on straight.

Plot: Sabina chooses a life of silence after she believes she’s responsible for her husband’s murder. But when she meets Lucius, her vow of solitude and silence is tested on all fronts.

Overall: I was actually riveted by the second Soothsayer book—the plot is really carefully unraveled and I loved the sweetness and maturity of Sabina and Lucius’ love for one another.

Set in Ancient Rome, Admonition introduces the reader to Sabina, a noblewoman grieving for her murdered husband, Felix. Believing herself to have unwittingly been the cause of Felix’s death due to her unguarded remarks, she has taken a vow of silence and is shunned by everyone outside her close family, who believe her to be cursed by the gods. That is until she meets Lucius, who is intrigued by the beautiful, silent Sabina and longs to hear her speak…

Admonition is the second in the Soothsayer series but ably functions as a standalone read and is absolutely first-class. I read and thoroughly enjoyed the first book, Soothsayer but with Admonition, Ms Amurra has really developed as a writer. Everything about the novel is pitched perfectly. The story has just the correct amount of intrigue, twist and romance, completely maintaining credibility and holding reader interest. Little details link back to one another from across the narrative strands, such as the Decebalus coin given to Sabina by Felix.

There has been a considered amount of careful thought given to the structure of the plot and its side-angles to ensure it reads seamlessly and maintains focus. It was a simple yet clever idea to begin the story at the Governor’s wedding feast where we leave the first book; it provided quick familiarity for those who’ve read Soothsayer but seemed a perfectly logical beginning for those who have not.

There is something incredibly comfortable about Ms Amurra’s writing, it has a light, gentle quality that flows effortlessly and is both engrossing and endearing to read. As with the plot construction, the prose is deceptively accomplished to achieve its easy readability. As a pedantic reviewer (!), it made my day to see the correct usage of the different words, discreet and discrete, which is rarely seen.

The characters are nicely layered and evolve believably. Sabina could have been one-dimensional due to the lack of speech but subtle weight is given to her movements and expressions to ensure she comes alive in the reader’s mind. You have a clear sense of the gravity of her situation and the effect it has on her from the very beginning. Lucius was nicely reassuring and the scene with the little girl, Mariana, although brief was a thoughtful touch that enhanced his personality. Priscilla was brilliantly utilised to drive the narrative on; she could have become a little tiresome but Ms Amurra deftly judges when to limit her immaturity. Thaddeus and Cyprian were both sinister and unpleasant in their own ways, without becoming caricatures, and I loved the nod to Thaddeus’s intentions with his surname.

Admonition is primarily a work of historical fiction and in the realisation of Ancient Rome Ms Amurra excels, providing an excellent reconstruction of the age that completely immerses the reader. There are so many understated, simple period details that build layer after layer of authenticity but again, it’s written with a level of clever restraint which enables the reader to inhabit Ancient Rome and move alongside the characters rather than be bombarded with superfluous fact.

Admonition is a beautifully crafted and absorbing novel by a gifted historical fiction writer. Highly recommended.

Admonition is the second book in the Soothsayer's Path series by Kathryn Amurra. As a Book Reviewer, I received a free ebook copy of this novel, and this is my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review or any review for this book.

Blurb from Amazon:
Sabina is a young noblewoman who, based on her soothsayer aunt's prediction, believes her words are dangerous and will hurt those she loves. Following the death of her beloved husband, she takes a vow of silence to protect those she loves from suffering the same fate.

My Review:
I was drawn into Sabina's life right from the first page. Kathryn Amurra has a way of creating characters and writing from the character's mind, heart, and emotions that makes the reader feel as though they were one of the characters experiencing the story--not just reading it. There are two other main characters in Admonition that aren't mentioned in the above blurb, but who play important roles in the story as well, and they are Priscilla, Sabina's stepsister and Cyprian, a friend of Lucius's.
Kathryn Amurra also does an excellent job of setting the scenes and painting pictures in the readers' minds, and it's clear that she knows her Ancient Roman history. As Sabina struggles with her feelings and her fear of what she believes her words can do, she also has to face a man who has designs on her, all while looking out for her stepsister's safety. As Lucius is targeted in a political plot, Sabina faces a difficult decision to break her silence in an attempt to save his life. However, her reputation could also be jeopardized.
As the story comes to its resolution, some shocking secrets are revealed in regard to the plot against Lucius, as well as Sabina's husband's death years ago.
If you enjoy historical romance stories that keep you turning pages with their suspense and surprises, you'll love Admonition. Also, if you like a romance story with both conflict and humor mixed throughout, you'll love Admonition. You'll also enjoy this novel if you like to read book that are well written and have been properly edited.
Admonition is the second book in Kathryn Amurra's Soothsayer's Path series, but both the first book, Soothsayer, and Admonition can be read as stand-alones. And if you haven't read Soothsayer, I recommend that you read that one as well.
I give Admonition by Kathryn Amurra 5 stars.

This author weaves stories in the ancient world that make me feel as if I'm "there" in that time and space of the world because they are so realistic. She manages to do all this while keeping the voice of the entire story fresh and interesting so I can't stop reading. I loved the first book in this series, and I can't decide if I loved the second one as much or maybe more.
The mark of a talented author is making one story to the next so good that their voice shines through consistently, but also the storyline and characters so different, that as a reader, I'm taken on an entirely different journey.
That's what happened with this book.
Once started I could not put this book down and finished it in three days.
Sobena believes she is cursed and is trying to survive the grief she suffers from the loss of her beloved first husband. She doesn't talk because she thinks her voice is what will hurt those she cares about.
She meets Lucius who is immediately drawn to her, and soon the connection they share is far beyond the need for words. You can "feel" these two's devotion to each other from the start. The chemistry starts right off and is sustained throughout the entire story. Even as Sobena's tries to resist it (for his own good!) Lucius never wavers in his devotion to her or trying to get her to see they had to be together.
I really adored Lucius's character. He was steady, and constant in how he felt about Sobena, while staying true to his sense of honor, integrity and kindness.

A delightful side character who grows from being kind of childlike and silly, towards a courageous heroin in the end is Sobena's younger stepsister, Priscilla who is a handful to keep up with for both Sobena and Lucius at different points in the story. She adds a bright spot to this story and I hope we get more of her!
The story brings in family, friends, and life choices that affect their growing romance. It delves into political intrigue, family loyalties, and even a lost treasure that has both tragedy and betrayal attached to it. There is even the perfect villain who manipulates and fools several characters and brings about the end of this book in the most surprising and satisfying way.
The love story weaves an amazing journey that surprises the reader from start to finish. I loved these characters and escaping into the ancient world to meet them! I highly recommend reading this!!

Sabina believes her words will hurt those she loves and takes a vow of silence following the death of her husband. Others around her don't understand, and think she's cursed; Sabina would rather avoid society and the drama of Rome's inner circles. Lucius, for all that a soothsayer warned him to avoid a pretty face that hides a cursed soul, is drawn to her. Lucius is heir to the empire and the target of a political plot, forcing Sabina to decide if speaking will save his life or seal his fate.

Admonition won the Georgia Romance Writers' 2020 Maggie Award for Excellence in the Unpublished Historical Romance category. This is also in the same universe as her prior novel Soothsayer, so that readers will know exactly what the canceled wedding refers to, and will recognize the soothsayer Tullia when she's mentioned. If you haven't read that one, don't worry! That doesn't really affect this novel's characters or trajectory at all. We focus on Sabina and Lucius, and the people in their orbit: Sabina's younger stepsister Priscilla, Cyprian, and Thaddeus, as well as other family members. Cyprian is ambitious and selfish, planning to wine and dine Priscilla for his own pleasures, and assumes that Lucius would do the same in order to be named heir to the throne. Thaddeus had lusted after Sabina even when her husband was alive, and is willing to connive and threaten in order to have power over Sabina and force her into his household.

Cyprian and Thaddeus aren't good men, and you're not meant to sympathize with them at all. I definitely can't, because I find them skeevy and predatory, for all that the public sees their charming side and doesn't recognize the menace that they carry. Because this is a romance novel, I know they'll get their comeuppance. They do, and it's fitting for the behavior that they had throughout the novel. Selfish ambition isn't rewarded here, only love and care for others. Sabina cares so much for others and finally gets a chance at happiness herself. I was cheering her on throughout the novel and was pleased with the conclusion.

Thanks goes the author for the complimentary digital copy of Admonition. An intriguing historical romance set in ancient times. I voluntarily agreed to read and review this book prior to publication. I apologize to the author for missing her publication date! My opinions are my own and nothing has influenced my rating.

Admonition is a well-written, emotionally charged romance with a plot that kept me reading, wanting to know what would happen next. There’s no doubt Ms. Amurra has done her research for this historical period and done it well.

Sabina is the heroine in this tale. She’s a young widow and her community believes she is cursed. She lives in a world of silence while she mourns her late husband. I enjoyed her character a great deal and my heart ached for her. She’s consumed by fear that if she loves again, a new husband could perish because of the curse.

Lucius is an incredible hero, and I quickly became vested in his character. He has the traits I most admire in a hero, and I loved his patience with Sabina. He never becomes frustrated with her, even when her fears could drive them apart. Near the end of the book, I could feel his heart ache over the betrayal he experiences. Since I don’t want to have any spoilers, you will need to read the book to understand my meaning!

The romance between Sabina and Lucius starts as simmering pot but slowly comes to a roaring boil by the end. The emotions between them is splendidly written. I truly wanted them to find their happy ending.

If you enjoy historical novels set in ancient times with remarkable characters and an emotionally charged plot, then you will love Admonition as much as I did. This is the second book I’ve read by Ms. Amurra and both are wonderful. Happy reading!

Admonition is the second instalment in the Soothsayer's path series and I have to say, Soothsayer was amazing but Admonition captured my heart from the first page!

Like Sabina, I was speechless as I sped my way through this book. I loved her fierce spirit despite her not uttering a single word for most of this book. I adored Lucius and how devoted to Sabina he became after a single meeting.

I really appreciated how complex the web Ms. Kathryn spun seemed to be unbreakable and I loved the easy, unexpected climax at the end. Most readers would want to see the characters suffer, and they did, but my heart was joyful at the way the story was wrapped up.

I think we see a bit more of Tullia the Soothsayer, given that she s the FMC's aunt and her prophecies really added that emotional depth as the characters tried to understand that, well...these prophecies shouldn't be taken literally or at face value. I'm glad to see that the explanation of Felix's death brought Sabina to a greater closure and allowed her to move on completely free of all her guilt.

Priscilla was a riot! I'm glad she had her own character arc within the story and that she changed for the better. Lucius and his parents were also a nice touch, though I wished to see a bit more interaction between his father and mother but I was still very happy that that arc also ended smoothly.

All in all, this was a lovely, heartrending, poignant read and I cannot wait for the final instalment of the Soothsayer's path series, Birthright!

Well done!

Kathryn Amurra has woven an intriguing tale that will stay with you long after you finish Admonition. In ancient Rome lives a soothsayer who has a prediction for her young niece: “Your words are like a sword, when wielded, will cut down whoever stands before you.” When Sabina’s husband, Felix, is deposited dead at her feet, she falls silent rather than speak any words that may harm any others. People around her whisper she’s fallen under the curse of the gods that she no longer is able to speak.

When the soldier who deposited her husband’s dead body at Sabina’s feet reenters her life in the guise of wooing her stepsister, Priscilla, Sabina meets Lucius, who causes her to reflect on her vow of silence. But Lucius is also given an admonition by Tullia the soothsayer. A fair face that hides a cursed heart will be his undoing.

Together these two fortunes are intertwined with a plot of political intrigue, devious minds, and a lost treasure amidst a sweet romance between two souls who care for each other as they come in conflict with the collision of the past and present.

A sweet and haunting tale, this book is highly recommended, particularly for those who want a historical romance with an ancient setting and twists and turns.

Admonition is an absolutely riveting book that truly takes the reader on a journey back in time to places and traditions of long ago and far away. I love that Kathryn Amurra incorporates so much detail. Each scene comes alive to every sense.

I also love that this book picks up where Soothsayer leaves off. The reader totally gets the sense that Admonition starts with a “behind the scenes” peek at what happens at the Governor’s mansion on the night he was to be married.

Sabina- what a fabulous leading lady!!! While carrying her own burden, she lovingly watches out for her young stepsister, forges a new relationship and takes a daring risk- all for love and for the sake of doing what is right.

All the characters in this book are very dimensional. The author excels at creating an “on the surface” persona for each one, and then helping the reader to really understand what their motivations are.

The aspect that makes this book such an entertaining escape is that there are several storylines that intertwine to really create a delightful and mystical 3-D world that welcomes the reader.

I will definitely be rereading this book, as I already miss the world of Sabina and Lucius!

Admonition is the second in Kathryn’s Soothsayer’s Path series, but functions as a stand-alone. Even if you haven’t read her first book, Soothsayer, you won’t be lost. (Although do yourself a favor and read Soothsayer. It’s good!)
Admonition tells the story of Sabina, a young widowed noblewoman, who takes a vow of silence after her soothsayer aunt’s prediction that words are dangerous and will harm those she loves. Undaunted by her silence, Lucius, a leading contender for the Imperial throne, is drawn to her. Set against the backdrop of Ancient Rome’s cut-throat politics, Sabina must decide if breaking her silence will save Lucius or seal his fate.

I enjoyed this book, as a follow on to Soothsayer, which was so entertaining! Love the way Amurra crafts every sentence, it is fresh, relaxing and entertaining all at once. I loved the ancient Roman setting and how it was used. The level of detail felt new, immersive, and also accessible. I felt like I was in a new place but also felt comfortable and at home. The romance, dialogue, human interaction and plot was well done. I was impressed with the dialogue between the characters, it was crisp, clever and felt so real.

As far as sequels go, this was a brilliant success. Amurra has surpassed her previous work in "Soothsayer" and given us a new tale full of cursed lovers and intrigue based on an years old "Admonition". Curses, like dreams, are given strength by those who believe in them, and as Sabina and Lucius find out, it's not always a curse that changes your life, but a disguised blessing that's meant to enrich it and bring it so much more. I loved reading this book and will continue to reccomend it, and its predecessor, for years to come.

The imagery and character development is rich and the romance will sweep you off your feet. A most welcome escape from reality. There is mystery, drama, romance and suspense in this historical novel. The characters are well-developed and fun. A great read!!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion. This is the second book in the series and I have to say I enjoyed it a bit more than the first. It is full of romance and I have to say I wish I had a Lucius of my own. For the full review click here: https://likelystory.blog/2021/05/12/r...

This is a charming romance novel for those who believe that true love conquers all. Many of the main characters follow the advise, "Listen to your heart"which is as true today as it was in ancient times.

Another great book by Kathryn Amurra. Loved the continuation of the soothsayer’s prophecies. While I enjoyed the first book, I liked this one even more as I felt more connected with the characters. Bravo!
