The bestselling author of How to Escape from Prison, prisoner-turned-psychologist Paul Wood on developing the mental strength and fitness to take on all of life's challenges
Getting and staying mentally fit, just like getting and maintaining a high level of physical fitness, involves hard work, effort, and consistency. Our level of mental fitness determines how effectively we can flourish through adversity, realise our potential, and be happier with our lives - regardless of what the universe has in store.
We all know about mental stress (or we think we do). We've definitely all experienced it, and none of us like it. Yet this is not a threat to be avoided. Mental stress is perfectly analogous to physical it is the mind's way of telling us that what we are attempting to perform is challenging our resource. This is a catalyst for growth, and a sign we are pursuing our potential. When we experience stress, we have a we can heed that signal and give up - after all, we're meant to stay in our psychic comfort zone all the time, right? Or we can recognise the discomfort we are feeling is simply nature's way of enabling us to rise to the occasion.
In Mental Fitness you will learn how
Increase your mental fitness, just as you would increase your physical fitness Get closer to your potential by working proactively to maintain your mental fitness Experience the right level of stress (this is what makes us get fitter) Cope effectively for longer before you get fatigued or exhausted (it doesn't mean you don't feel the struggle) Pay attention to the indicators of fatigue to avoid burnout and unnecessary misery
Lots of good info in here (less so for neurodivergent folks, particularly when discussing habits and relationships) but nothing truly different or remarkable as compared to other books of this nature. I do like that the resource materials are included within the text rather than a separate item to find a link for or purchase. I'd recommend it as a succinct introduction to a variety of concepts which other authors discuss in better detail. I don't feel I was the target audience for this one, personally.
I really enjoyed this book. I read/listened to the audio version. It was very easy to understand, repetitive enough that the theories sunk in, and provided some new concepts I hadnt previously come across. I also really enjoyed his personal stories jotted throughout and the examples of application.
I enjoyed this book and it taught me some tools to putin my mental health toolbox but some of it felt repetitive so it took longer than usual to finish.
Mental Fitness by Paul Wood teaches how to get and stay mentally fit no matter what life may throw at us.
I thought Paul Wood’s story was stirring and the information he gave was engaging and instructive. I listened to the audio version and it was very easy to follow and understand. There was just enough repetition to let the concepts sink in without it getting annoying. I liked that he gave examples from his life to help get the point across.
There are some great tools to add to your mental health toolbox. I enjoyed it so much that as soon as I finished the audiobook and returned it to my library, I went out and bought it so I would be able to reference the action portions whenever I needed it.
Helpful, informative, and easy to digest. 5 stars.
This book was an absolute game changer for me. Paul Wood's approach to mental fitness resonated with me in a way no book has done before. It is well written, thought provoking and challenged some of my deep rooted beliefs. I had been looking at life from a different angle prior to reading this book, and it was getting me nowhere - I have followed tips and advice and am now embracing challenges rather than viewing them as threats, and can honestly say I am now flourishing. I loved when Paul Wood wrote that "better never stops". A fantastic read that I would definitely recommend to others.
Helpful. Informative. Inspirational. Simple to digest. Packed full of tips. Loved it till I was halfway into listening the ebook. It’s a good book but it’s a little too long-winded for my liking. That’s why it took me so long to finish.
Good information, presented in a fairly useful way. I believe you need to be in the right headspace through to really implement the tactics and gain the benefit.
I would like to go through this book again at some point.
Love an author with an inspirational story and Paul's 100% is. Great insights throughout the book; already looking forward to reading it again to pick up on more useful tidbits.
There are some enlightening words in here about examining your mental states, with strategies to change them if needed. I found some useful suggestions to practice. It's easy to read.
