Set before the epic events of the Earth 50,000 BC books, this thrilling and fast-moving short story conveys the start of the Abraxian conflict: a massive space war that marked the beginning of the end to civilization in the luminary and launched an epic conflict between those who survived it, and those that did not. ------ Deep in space, an ancient enemy has returned. Captain Magneus, the flamboyant and brutal ship captain of the MDF Reason, races against time to stop a fleet of Abraxian warships from escaping the small moon Aegir with valuable cargo.
Alone, against a superior combat force, and fighting a ruthless enemy no one has seen for a thousand years, only the cunning and determined crew of the MDF Reason stand between life, death, and something else they are discovering might be much worse.

MDF Reason is a well written and well edited Sci-Fi adventure that has a more military heavy vibe to it. It's akin to what you would imagine a starfleet vessel would look like if commanded by the Starship trooper's franchise military. Over-all it works well in the setting creating a realistic sci-fi tone that falls somewhere in the middle of grimdark and space opera setting.
Thalia is a strong and competent female lead that shares a professional bond with the captain from a history of successful combat missions. The author conveys this across story cleanly and clearly creating a fun dynamic between the two. The combat is well written and engaging with clean and smooth transitions from scene to scene.
Overall a wonderful opening to the series and more importantly, the story had piqued my interest enough to read more in this Earth 50,000 series.
This was a well-written and engaging short story meant to introduce readers to the Earth 50,000 BC series. I found the characters satisfying, the hints at the universe-building intriguing and the setup for more storytelling solid.
I appreciated the structure of the story and its role as an introduction, although that’s also why I’m giving it four rather than five stars. I would have done 4.5 if that were allowed. It’s good, and I enjoyed it, but it doesn’t quite manage to stand on its own in terms of a completely satisfying short story for my taste. It did its job of setting the tone and getting me interested in the more expansive reality I’m sure will be in the novels, but I would have liked it to feel a bit more like a complete thought rather than a first chapter.
The Machine Defense Force is introduced in this prequel to David Edward's series of books. A quick and fast paced read that will leave the reader breathless in the first adventure of Commander Magnus and his right hand warrior, Thalia. Grab this book now.
It is a clever story that introduces the characters. I liked the writing and the action, and I liked that these were not your standard issue goody two shoes star trek clones like 95% of scifi fleet books. Well done and recommended.
The story quickly reveals a brutish social structure that revolves around raw power with the weak paying tribute. An ancient civilization appears with the intention of taking over, soon realizing that they have underestimated the potential pushback.
‘MDF Reason’ is self-contained, action-packed short story in its own right. But more importantly, it offers an enticing, bite-sized introduction to the ‘Earth 50,000 BC’ universe. If the full-length novels in the series are anything like ‘MDF Reason’, count me in!
I very much enjoyed reading this short story. I love Sci-fi. This story gave me a taste of what is to come and I look forward to reading the rest of the series!
